One thing that struck me, the circling reindeer aren't taking turns at the outside of the circle, where the danger from predators is the greatest. I mean, when emperor penguins form great huddles during winter storms they're constantly shuffling from the warm inside of the crowd do the outside, so everyone taking a turn at the best and worst of conditions.
I wonder how the reindeer determine their place in the cyclone, is it random or does their position in the herd mandate a specific role in the stampede?
