I’m not talking about dildos, cucumbers, and fists you silly geese. Rather the things you do that help you cope. Examples would be things like alcohol, shopping, organization/OCD, Facebook, travel, etc. Mine are puzzles, card games, tending to my rather large container garden, and a glass of wine or three. It used to be running and the gym when I was a young buck, but those days are behind me.
What do you use to “fill the void?”

Reading, exercising, the DL, and copious amounts of pot, silly.

@R2-- I have started microdosing as well, this is day 3. I can not put my phone down, at all. I must read 24/7. I would be reading books 24/7 if I had no internet or phone. I am sure there are others doing the same, but I have not seen or read about them talking about this. If I am reading I am not thinking about my life and problems. I suppose it is an escape, like drugs or food is for others. It is truly a problem that I do not know how to deal with right now.

I DO use dildoes, thankyouverymuch.

R9- Low dose of mushrooms. Many have had success treating depression with them when all other medications/ therapy have failed.

Porn, internet chat, IRL streams online, online shopping. Nothing ever fills the void, the void never gets full.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 31, 2021 11:34 AM |
R9 a subperceptual dose of mushrooms (I take it in capsule form) doesn't give me any discernible high or trip. Instead, it lifts and subtracts all sorts of bullshit in my mind and attitude. I'm not ruminating nearly as much, I feel less hopeless, I feel happier, maybe the right description is, I've revived some of my delight in how I see things and react to things. For example, I love my job, and yet I have tons of anxiety about it. Lately I've remembered that they're paying me to be creative, so fucking focus on that, and stop worrying!
It's working well for me. For reference I don't take any prescribed meds. If you do, I would check with someone else who's mixing with Rx.
I love it, and I couldn't have gotten through this shit year without microdosing.
Also I'm smoking weed way less, more for listening to music, and I resolved the unprecedented snacking habit that I picked up this year.

1h of brisk walking in the woods daily.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 31, 2021 11:51 AM |
Walking. Zoom yoga classes with a favorite teacher. Taking care of long-neglected clutter and problem areas in the house (amazing how therapeutic THAT can be!). I've smoked pot consistently throughout the pandemic: it motivates me to take on projects and keep busy, instead of being glued to CNN or social media. Only problem with that is that it interferes with my love of reading: hard to retain anything or stay focused when you're stoned, ha ha. I just save reading, now, for later in the day when I'm not stoned. Obviously I favor Sativa as my flower of choice!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 31, 2021 12:00 PM |
Where are people getting these shr00m caps?

Gym, sex, walking, books, TV & film, gaming (video and board), travelling, eating out, spending time with friends and family. I don't really see it as filling a void, just things that I like doing in my non-work time. Of course, many of those things are on hold at the moment but I'm pretty lucky in that the majority of my main interests I can do just as well at home.
I haven't studied for anything for a while and that is something that from time to time I do feel like I'd like to get back to, and I'm making some plans to potentially do so later this year, but I'm definitely not one of those people who always has to be busy or surrounded by other people to feel fulfilled - in fact usually the opposite!

by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 31, 2021 3:48 PM |
The shroom thing just got legalized here in Oregon but I heard it’s a few years out before shroom clinics open. I wish we could just buy it and take it home, as we do with weed.
Meanwhile, I read DL, draw a lot, smoke weed and listen to music (evening activity which often leads to hot sex with husband) and putter around my house, cleaning and tackling small projects. I take walks around my neighborhood. Eat a lot of food.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 31, 2021 3:51 PM |
I have chronic pain from MS and have to be drug tested every month. I had to give up weed because of this and I miss it so badly that I am thinking of giving up my pain medication instead. It isn't fair. As far as microdosing, I just doubled my low dose cap and still feel nothing. I understand this isn't about getting high, but feeling different and I do not. Even double the dose I feel absolutely nothing. Do not know if I am doing this correctly.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 31, 2021 4:11 PM |
If I were to make a difference between 'filling the void' and 'passing the time' or 'engaging myself with a hobby', I'd have to say it is free to play mobile games. I do a bunch of other things, but this is the one that makes me superficially feel that I've done something for myself, when I mostly haven't.

I'm sort of like R11, making lists & spreadsheets. The spreadsheets actually helped me a lot with saving money, figuring out what I was spending money on.

Walk a lot, take a zillion pictures in part to learn more about my camera and its capabilities, spend time going through 'em all, trying different things w. editing. Focusing -- ha ha -- on trying to get a good image and/or the editing does well to take my mind away from ruminations, stress and such.
And the occasional low-dose edible calms my mind. Part of me wants to enjoy 'em more often, but I don't want to build up a tolerance, have it become less of a treat, more normal.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 31, 2021 6:52 PM |
There is no void. Not in my constitution. This seems to be a genetic trait paired w/upbringing
Neglected children raised by lazy/absentee parents who become narcissists suffer the 'void'. Empty vessels. However, once free from toxic parents/people/family their innate genetic traits (if favorable) override the trauma. They eventually bloom. Water seeks its own level
Selfish, lazy & unmotivated people can't be fixed or repaired. Even under the best circumstances they manage to bring everyone in their orbit down. Especially those altruistic, naive but better specimens cut from a FINER FABRIC

R43 - very much the same here! I do find myself watching old videos of Judy performing at Carnegie Hall when I have a little too much wine....and Barbra at The Concert 1994. And I never miss Jeopardy! When I was young I thought it was such an old person show.” Now Im their demographic.

People who don’t listen to music (ever, or anymore) just bewilder me. Like, what do you do? What do you think about? If I’m not mentally stimming a song on repeat then I’m probably unconscious or dead.
Been this way since I was a little kid, so for better or worse I think I must be a music junkie, as I struggle to be out of the vicinity of some headphones or a speaker or a radio for more than a day. I get anxious without secure access to some type of music playing, whether streaming or older physical media. I just feel weird, exposed and alone without tunes. Yet I’m not one of those people who has to have the tv and the lights on in the house all the time, or anything—just music, and I’m fine. Don’t know why I’m like this. Maybe it’s because my parents always had music on in (and out of) the house when I was growing up.

And quite honestly having “a void” is quite a luxury. I have friends that complain about unappreciative and neglectful children and grand children, struggling to pay off crushing debt, multiple doctor appointments, and parental caretaking commitments. I’ll often times wake up with an open schedule for the entire day and absolutely revel in the calmness of it all. Maybe I’ll take in a solo matinee, have lunch at 2pm at a favorite spot, take a walk in the park, enjoy a happy hour cocktail, tend to my herb garden and flowers, or talk with the neighbors.

In LA it was really the gym because I splurged on an expensive one and made a group of friends. I also enjoyed dining out with one or two friends or meeting for coffee or a drink and maybe sex with some of the older nelly bottoms (2 have died since I left the country which means less friends for me and I miss them). Went to museums or other parts of LA, sometimes with a pal, sometimes alone. Reading. Weekend nights a few Corona Lights. Hanging out with my parents and sister (my family isn't perfect, but they are super progressive and read a lot) one lunch per weekend and a long nap afterwards and some films or playing with my niece and nephew. Cooking.
Now that I am in Eastern Europe, I am more isolated. I go for long walks as my project is almost over and there is less work. I go out to restaurants and a few distanced events with my roommate. Mainly, I enjoy walking around about 6 hours a day aimlessly and watching life...strolling in bookstores and coming home to post on DL. Looking forward to the end of my project to get some medical tests and just relax 3 months before I go home.

R45 you just taught me the term for what I do all the time:
"If I’m not mentally stimming a song on repeat then I’m probably unconscious or dead."
It could be a snippet of a song that I play on repeat in my head. Stimming, you say. I guess I'm off to learn a bit more about myself.

I love this thread! I was just ruminating today how my company is probably never going to require us to come back to the office full time. My job is easy breezy to begin with. I have a mostly absent boss who checks in with me maybe once every two weeks. I am 40 years old but living the life of a retiree. Most days I don't get out of bed until 9a. I make breakfast, work out. By the time I'm showered and dressed it's already noon. Husband and I have been doing some home renovation projects, so that's kept me occupied. Some days I'll go shopping and just spend a few hours at stores. Evenings I'll cook dinner, smoke some weed and catch up on tv or do some writing or music production. I am so looking forward to this summer and moving about in the world again, socializing and being in crowds. No Trump. No constantly doomscrolling Twitter because of Trump. Life feels like it's about to get good again .

Puttering around, walking, tending houseplants (during covid they have multiplied, watering and repotting ). Now that I have gotten both vax doses and waited the 14 days after, I have enjoyed wearing a mask and browsing about Home Sense, other shops which are not necessary but have been missed. Bookstores. I live not far from the shore, so enjoy walking on the boardwalk and the small towns. so I am around people, but still able to keep some distance.
I am not ready to dine indoors yet, or be in large groups indoors. But I plan to attend some outside events as the weather warms up. Masked, of course. It will take a long time until I feel relaxed around large groups.
