Why?
Denis Leary
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 2, 2021 10:19 PM |
How?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 30, 2021 1:17 AM |
Why not?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 30, 2021 1:18 AM |
When?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 30, 2021 1:19 AM |
And with whom?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 30, 2021 1:20 AM |
How many?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 30, 2021 1:22 AM |
I saw an ad for a new Fox show. I'm curious about him because tried to be Bill Hicks after Bill died and then tried to do the 'angry smoking fuck you' shtick. I don't get him, thus my question...
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 30, 2021 1:24 AM |
Denis. Does it rhyme with penis?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 30, 2021 1:24 AM |
Wait, what?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 30, 2021 1:24 AM |
I went to college with him. Never got it. One dimension schtick.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 30, 2021 1:25 AM |
And how big was his shtick, R9?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 30, 2021 1:26 AM |
Because he's an asshole ee ole ee ole ee ole ee ole ee ole.
Because straight guys live through his dickless ass vicariously.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 30, 2021 1:27 AM |
I don't know. We never showered together.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 30, 2021 1:29 AM |
Denis Leary and Norm Mcdonald were two guys I never got. I suspect there wasn't a whole lot there to get.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 30, 2021 1:29 AM |
Correction: he's a Masshole r11, not just a run of the mill asshole. Born and bred.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 30, 2021 1:31 AM |
He seems really unpleasant and difficult to get along with.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 30, 2021 1:32 AM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 30, 2021 1:42 AM |
Did he really get it on with Liz Hurley back in the day? They were super close for co-stars. He's supposed to be one of her son's godfathers, along with her other ex Hugh Grant.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 30, 2021 1:44 AM |
Because Bill Hicks died.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 30, 2021 1:47 AM |
Denis Leary wears a glamorous wig <3
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 30, 2021 1:49 AM |
Absolutely ruined the Thomas Crown Affair. A braying donkey.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 30, 2021 1:50 AM |
I thought he and Rene Russo had more chemistry than Russo and Brosnan in The Thomas Crown Affair.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 30, 2021 1:51 AM |
! ?? !
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 30, 2021 1:52 AM |
Smells like camel lights and slim Jim’s
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 30, 2021 1:53 AM |
R19 Gross! He looks like Kellyanne Conway!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 30, 2021 1:55 AM |
WHET Rene Russo? I always liked her as an actress.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 30, 2021 1:57 AM |
[QUOTE] Denis Leary wears a glamorous wig <3
He claims that’s his real hair.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 30, 2021 1:57 AM |
OP, the answer is because genetics often gets things wrong, and an asshole grows a much larger one that never stops crapping out hate and ego.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 30, 2021 3:04 AM |
LOL at R19. No way that guy is going to show the real dick. It's either horse hung naturally or a prosthetic.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 30, 2021 3:27 AM |
Turn on, tune in, drop out
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 30, 2021 3:30 AM |
Never the least bit funny
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 30, 2021 3:33 AM |
Agreed with above - he just seems like a regular old Masshole. However, he does seem to have a stretch of humanity and caring in him.
He's not on my list of top annoying celebrities. There are soooo many much much worse than he.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 30, 2021 3:44 AM |
LOL R29. Who said anything about his dick?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 30, 2021 12:24 PM |
He did it BEFORE Bill Hicks died, R6. Hicks would openly say that Leary was stealing his act, which he was. Leary stole not just the jokes but the context and the persona.
Then after Hicks died of cancer, Leary called his album full of stolen Hicks jokes "No Cure For Cancer." Charming.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 30, 2021 12:29 PM |
Where?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 30, 2021 12:37 PM |
Holy shit, R34. I didn't know about the album thing. That's vile.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 30, 2021 5:58 PM |
And to think Gabe Kaplan had to find another line of work!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 30, 2021 6:07 PM |
What? I don't want to hijack the thread but why did Gabe Kaplan have to find other work?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 30, 2021 6:11 PM |
Here's a clip of Greg Giraldo taking down Denis Leary on the old Tough Crowd show. Denis starts melting down around 5:00. You can see how pissed he is to have gotten topped.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 30, 2021 7:38 PM |
.. so forced anal?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 30, 2021 9:16 PM |
[quote]Because he's an asshole ee ole ee ole ee ole ee ole ee ole.
Apparently me and R11 are the only ones who remember the Asshole song.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 30, 2021 9:42 PM |
Thanks, R39. Greg Giraldo was by far one of the most brilliantly funny and incredibly intelligent stand-up comedians we've ever had. Denis Leary is a putz in comparison--a butt-hurt little bitch. Giraldo bitch-slapped him.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 30, 2021 9:59 PM |
Word was that if comedians saw Leary in the building they would not do their best or new material.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 30, 2021 10:06 PM |
Leary took lame one liners from comics and developed them into long concept pieces.
More importantly Greg and Bill are dead and Denis is alive and well and rich.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 30, 2021 10:47 PM |
[quote] What? I don't want to hijack the thread but why did Gabe Kaplan have to find other work?
Because there was more demand for a polyester Bill Hicks than a polyester Groucho Marx.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 30, 2021 11:07 PM |
Funny in "The Ref", and nothing else, for the reasons OP mentioned in R6. He's no Bill Hicks. But seems to think he is.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 30, 2021 11:19 PM |
He aspired to be a big thing but eventually found his lane with third tier cable channel nighttime soaps for straight guys. Nothing much else to say.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 30, 2021 11:23 PM |
[quote]I went to college with him. Never got it. One dimension schtick.
Emerson?
I recently read an article about the old MTV show, Remote Control and it mentions Leary, Steven Wright and Doug Herzog went to Emerson together.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 31, 2021 12:52 AM |
R45 Cunty, Leary isn't rich and alive because he's got talent.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 31, 2021 12:52 AM |
R43, literally brilliant. Went to Columbia and then apparently scored a near perfect on the LSAT and he got a JD from HLS.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 31, 2021 2:53 AM |
Leary taught at Emerson after he graduated.
Mario Cantone was his roommate and best friend..
Hicks used to us the word faggot a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 31, 2021 3:00 AM |
"Leary taught at Emerson after he graduated."
And?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 31, 2021 3:20 AM |
Leary taught Comedy Act Stealing 101.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 31, 2021 3:38 AM |
"Rescue Me" was an entertaining show.
Watching it though, I felt that Denis Leary had to have a monstrous ego, because the way the character he played was written, he was like this unbelievable sex god. It went way beyond the usual ladies man/pussy hound thing, it was so unbelievably over the top. Like, any woman who laid eyes on him had to have him, and then fell madly and passionately in love with him after fucking him, and then went crazy with jealousy after he dumped her, or she found out that he was fucking ten other women, etc. etc.
If it were one of the hot guys on the show, it'd be more believable, but it was ugly-ass Denis Leary we were supposed to believe was irresistible to every woman on Earth, and that he was this stud that constantly fucked all these hot chicks.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 31, 2021 3:44 AM |
Any window of hotness Leary had was slammed shut pretty fast.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 31, 2021 3:46 AM |
"Leary taught at Emerson after he graduated." Wow, R52.
And Giraldo earned a bachelor's degree in English from Columbia University. Then he was admitted to Harvard Law School after achieving a near perfect score on his Law School Admission Test, scoring in the 99th percentile of students taking the test. He earned a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School.
Little doubt who had the superior mind of the two.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 31, 2021 4:38 AM |
And who was the real comic genius of the two. Sure wasn't Leary.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 31, 2021 4:39 AM |
Let’s never let another “Dennis Leary” happen again
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 31, 2021 4:48 AM |
[quote]It was ugly-ass Denis Leary we were supposed to believe was irresistible to every woman on Earth
Remember fat, wheezing Tony Soprano? His character was the same way.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 31, 2021 11:20 AM |
R49 yes, Emerson. I knew Doug well. I don't think I ever had a conversation with Denis but he was always around. And I don't remember Stephen Wright - maybe he was or had graduated before I got there.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 31, 2021 3:17 PM |
I liked him in movie..The Ref....with Judy Davis. Heartwarming...lol.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 31, 2021 3:32 PM |
He wasn't bad in Suicide Kings (with Christopher Walken) but he sucks at standup. It was on the basis of that movie that I watched his standup and gave up after ten minutes. He was awful, comes across as bitter not funny.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 1, 2021 10:00 PM |
Bitter was the cool of the day. He road a trend and did well.
Greg Giraldo at the time was trying desperately to secure a sitcom on a network a la Jerry Seinfeld. He tried three times to get the sitcom thing going. Should have gone for a cable show.
Leary read the room and took film offers and then developed a dramedy for cable. He may have used material that was used before but he either had a great head for the business or just a great agent.
Bill Hicks was too cool for school. He often railed against the "sellouts", but in the end I wonder which way he would have gone, stay with limited resources of an the road comic career and maintain his coolness cred or go with produced specials and TV.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 2, 2021 1:28 AM |
R65 Yes, I think the secret to Leary's success has to do with knowing what the public wants. His success has little to do with any comedic talent. I can't imagine G Giraldo in a sitcom; he doesn't fit into any trope. Maybe something like 'Louie' where he's basically play himself but you're right, it would have to be cable.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 2, 2021 1:17 PM |
[quote]Word was that if comedians saw Leary in the building they would not do their best or new material.
R44, years ago I read the same about Robin Williams and Carlos Mencia. Really shameless theft.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 2, 2021 1:36 PM |
Bill Hicks' standup would get him in huge amounts of trouble these days, from the death threats to audience members to the lengthy bits about fucking 12-year-old girls.
Yes, Leary saw that and took Hicks' material and made it consumer friendly, but there's not a lot of genius in that.
Further, if you watch his early roles in Demolition Man and Loaded Weapon 1, it's pretty clear he was hired because someone wanted to add Leary's standup to the movie. He's terrible and obviously only in the movies because he had friends who got him gigs. He never really improved either, by the time he was in Thomas Crown and Wag the Dog he should have been competent, but he was barely tolerable.
I get that he had a career because he played the game more than Hicks ever did, and that's a legitimate observation, but I don't know that you can attribute it to him being better at the business.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 2, 2021 1:44 PM |
R66 I forgot about Carlos Mencia! He had a HUGE career - TV series and constantly touring - until his thievery was exposed. He presented himself as Mexican but he wasn't. Yes, WHET?
Robin Williams was never funny. He was manic.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 2, 2021 1:54 PM |
Carlos Mencia reemerged a while back, doing a few podcast interviews.
Over a decade later, he's still living in total denial. It's pretty pathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 2, 2021 2:17 PM |
I just watched two episodes of his new show and his hair is ridiculous but otherwise he’s aging naturally.
