“I voted for Brexit but didn’t realise it would come to this”: Tears flow for Brits avoiding deportation as illegals in Sp

Tears flow for Brits as they head home to avoid being deported as illegals in Spain

The Spanish dream is over as Brits leave Spain to avoid being deported as illegal immigrants

What started out to be a dream life in the sun, has turned into a nightmare for thousands of Brits who didn’t wish to be legally registered as a resident in Spain.

By not being legally registered, Brits until now, have gone under the radar when it came to paying Spanish taxes and other contributions, but Brexit has changed that, now they have to be out of Spain by March 31 when they will be deemed as illegal immigrants and deported anyway as their 90-day legal stay ends.

It’s not just the tax dodgers though that are affected, some ex-pats have been declined residency despite applying whilst others amazingly missed deadlines to apply, believing nothing would actually happen until cops started preparing deportation plans in anticipation of the deadline date.

Spain’s police force and authorities are expecting to deport 500 UK citizens within the first week, with targets already earmarked to be picked up and deported home, knowingly to the authorities not having the correct paperwork to remain.

Although a small exodus of Brits has started this week as they head back to Britain to beat the deadline.

One of those, Anthony Cook, tells of a great 7 years in Spain, but now he’s on his way home, he told Global247news: “The Spanish dream is over for me, it’s time to go back to Cardiff, it’s been a blast but the new regulations have made it impossible to stay, I don’t have enough credentials to become a resident, it was so easy before, get your funds in from the UK, do a bit of cash in hand around the likes of Benidorm and bob was your uncle, but that’s all changed now – hey, don’t be fooled thousands of Brits in some guise or other have been doing the same thing, especially in the entertainment industry!

” Anyway, it’s time to head home, the freedom of movement has gone, and I don’t want to end up getting deported and fined,” he said.

Cook though says he knows of any who are going to try and ‘wing it’ and stay, he said ” I know of loads who are going to stay thinking they won’t get caught, I think they will but they have said to me how are they going to check everybody but quite truthfully I don’t want to be looking over my shoulder, if they get away with I will look at it again and come back in 6 months

” They cite the lookey lookey men who are all illegal in the main from Africa and never get rounded up but I think Spain and the EU will target Brits due to the politics

“I’m not taking the risk – I will study and watch, see if they get deported” Cook finished.

Another returning at Malaga airport today was Shaun Cromber who despite voting for Britain to leave the EU, didn’t believe it would end his Spanish lifestyle, he said: ” Yes I voted out, but I didn’t realise it would come to this, my application has been rejected and we are on our way home – the wife is in tears, she’s distraught if I’m honest and I’m not too happy at the prospect of returning back to the UK.

“I’ve loved living on the Costa del Sol and after 5 years can’t believe it has come to this, we applied but got rejected and so have no choice, although long term I think the Spanish will regret chucking us out of Spain”

The deadline now is only 4 days away and it’s certainly going to be interesting to see what happens when the British become illegal immigrants in Spain.

by Anonymousreply 2March 27, 2021 5:13 PM

The writer of that article must have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find British expats who voted for Brexit when the vast, overwhelming majority didn't.

by Anonymousreply 3March 27, 2021 5:16 PM

Where’s this from OP. The English speak terrible English.

by Anonymousreply 4March 27, 2021 5:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 5March 27, 2021 5:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 12March 27, 2021 5:47 PM

Wishful thinking. The Spanish want their money.

by Anonymousreply 13March 27, 2021 5:47 PM

It means they’ve been living in Spain without paying any taxes, R8. In a word, they’re freeloaders.

[quote] By not being legally registered, Brits until now, have gone under the radar when it came to paying Spanish taxes and other contributions

by Anonymousreply 14March 27, 2021 5:49 PM

They're still spending money sourced in the UK in the Spanish economy, R14, which Spain is in desperate need of.

by Anonymousreply 15March 27, 2021 5:56 PM

What? Can someone translate, please?

by Anonymousreply 16March 27, 2021 6:02 PM

R16 he means pre-Brexit he could live largely off his UK savings whilst living pretty much permanently Spain, and supplementing this with working for cash under-the-table in resorts like Benidorm.

by Anonymousreply 23March 27, 2021 6:24 PM

At last, revenge for the Armada.

by Anonymousreply 25March 27, 2021 6:27 PM

R15 Please, don't make me laugh.

Most british are not being expelled from Spain, and these people didn't want to pay taxes.

Spain needs more japanese tourist and less british and german who seem to lose all their senses once they leave their countries and feel the need to get drunk and puke on the streets.

Curiously, this is one of the strange cases where british need way more the spanish inmigrants (a big part of them very qualified and working in hospitals) than the other way around

by Anonymousreply 26March 27, 2021 6:35 PM

[quote] I don’t know what they expected. After all, they are immigrants.

Bollocks! How can a Briton be an immigrant? We just wanted to keep out the Pakis!

by Anonymousreply 27March 27, 2021 6:49 PM

"After all, they are immigrants."

As a EU member you don't actually feel like an immigrant or unwelcome anywhere in Europe. Immigrants are people from Africa, China or anyone from outside the EU. Europe (EU) is home now. We're one big family without borders or restrictions where you can work, live or travel. The Brits are stupid to actually leave this comfort zone and will soon realize they're unwelcome outsiders and no longer part of our "club".

by Anonymousreply 28March 27, 2021 6:54 PM

R28, I voted to remain. I think Brexit has been a terrible misjudgement and will only cause damage to the UK.

by Anonymousreply 29March 27, 2021 7:25 PM

How do the Brits in Spain get medical care?

by Anonymousreply 30March 27, 2021 7:32 PM

^You have access to the Spanish Health System as a resident. If you've been living there illegally, you probably have extra health insurance or you're hopefully still healthy enough to jump on a plane back to the UK.

The missing credentials the man mentioned in the article to apply for residency are actually health insurance and yearly income of 5164 Euro or monthly income of 368 Euro. Those folks are some poor bastards that they cannot meet these basic criteria of health insurance or don't even have 368 Euro per month to live.

by Anonymousreply 31March 27, 2021 8:05 PM

Darn. Does that mean "Benidorm" will now be retooled as "Blackpool"?

by Anonymousreply 32March 27, 2021 8:16 PM

These cunts probably didn't even bother to learn the most basic Spanish vocabulary. Look at that Brexit hellhole in the OP's link, all festooned in Union Jacks and tacky Brit paraphernalia.

by Anonymousreply 33March 27, 2021 8:18 PM

They’re not real Spaniards.

Leave-backing expats in Spain regret their decision as Brexit looms

Brexit-backing British nationals living in Spain told Channel 4 News they feel remorse for their decision as they face an uncertain future in the EU after Brexit.

By ALBERT EVANS Monday, 11th February 2019, 7:04 pm Updated Tuesday, 12th February 2019, 5:14 am

Dave told Channel 4 News he would like to keep his freedom of movement rights.

Spain is host to nearly 300,000 British nationals, the greatest number in any of the other 27 members states of the EU. Nearly 40 per cent of these are over 65, according to the Office for National Statistics, with many pensioners migrating to the southern coast of the country to enjoy their retirement. Channel 4 News reporter Ciaran Jenkins spoke to a number of British expats living on the Costa Blanca near to Alicante and found many are concerned for their future ahead of Brexit on the 29 March.

Dave bought his Spanish holiday home after voting to leave but told Mr Jenkins that he regretted his vote. He told the journalist the main factor in his change of heart was the loss of “freedom of movement in Europe, for the proper Europeans”.

When he was asked if he wanted to keep his own freedom of movement rights intact he replied. “Yes. I know it might be selfish but I think on reflection now we’d probably vote, if we had a referendum, the other way now.” The journalist asked him if he had “shot himself in the foot?” He replied:”We might have done, we may very well have done.”

Bill and his wife Joyce, who also backed leave, said they spent four months of the year in Spain as “an extended holiday every year” but would not be coming if there was a no deal Brexit as they would not be able to bring their dog Beano.

“The dog would be the first priority,” they told the reporter. Some of the other expats expressed doubt that Spain would close its doors to British nationals. One unnamed woman said: “I don’t think Spanish will turn English away because they’re quite a big thing for the economy.”

Some expats said they were concerned that their access to the Spanish health system, protected under EU rules, would be curtailed in a no deal Brexit.

Dave England lives in the Andalucian countryside and is severely ill. He said he depends on nearly 700 euros worth of medication every month and cannot afford to pay for private medical insurance as the British Government recommends.

He said: “I haven’t slept properly in two years. I wake up sweating. I wake up wondering what’s going on. I’m terrified.”

The whole Spanish coastline has been ruined by patronizing English gits. "Oh you must come over and share a rather fine local Rioja." Oh piss off, you sad twats!!!!

by Anonymousreply 43March 28, 2021 8:55 AM

I can’t believe an expat living in a European country would vote Leave. That’s like voting against access to the air that you breathe.

by Anonymousreply 44March 28, 2021 8:58 AM

You know i look at the Brexit situation and I'm reminded of Texas bogus secession attempt. Why do people get so involved in their national (or state) pride that they never consider the consequences.

Like TX leaving the U.S. cements Dem trifecta for generations ( No R President or Congress). Sure, certain states would gain the displaced citizens but the loss of Electoral votes and representatives plus -2 for the senate means Dem trifecta. That's a self-own. Other southern states who dare the same bullshit also further make the divide greater. Stupid !

For the Brits I get the U.K. and the Commonwealth Nations are powerful in their own right, but seriously Germany and France will move on just fine. I really don't get why the Brits thought this was a good idea. There is no guarantee other nations won't leave the Commonwealth. It's a risky gamble for England to do this. Safety in numbers. Put your egos aside. This places your future in jeopardy. Did you learn nothing from 1776 - present from America? In 20 years this will be the most interesting shot in the foot mark my words.

No keep calm and Brexit on. Cheers !

by Anonymousreply 45March 28, 2021 9:00 AM

^ "No keep calm and Brexit on." should read " Now keep calm and Brexit on! "

by Anonymousreply 46March 28, 2021 9:03 AM

The problem with British people living in Spain was raise several times before the referendum and during Brexit negotiations. Neither the Tories nor Labour (then run by pro Brexit Jeremy Corbyn) made the argument that freedom of movement was reciprocal - it wasn't *just* Eastern Europeans coming to Britain to work in our coffee shops and care homes, it was hundreds of thousands of pensioners living in Europe.

Residents were told throughout the referendum campaign that there would be no problems with their residency. They were lied to.

Throughout Brexit negotiations they were told there would be no problems with their residency. They were lied to again.

A lot of the British in Spain have limited incomes, often just their state pension. They can afford to live in a place that has cheap housing and where the sunshine benefits their health conditions.

The financial impact on them coming back to the UK means they have to go on a list for housing because they're unlikely to be able to afford to rent and won't be able to get a mortgage, and the impact on the NHS.

by Anonymousreply 55March 28, 2021 9:53 AM

Most of the British living abroad and voted to leave the EU obviously didn't want Eastern Europeans coming to their country, but thought Spaniards should be thrilled to welcome them in their country. After all the British support the Spanish economy, right? But the Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians are just a bunch of freeloaders who don't deserve to live in the UK. Bet they think they're the "good" immigrants and only they should enjoy freedom of movement. We have the RIGHT to live wherever we want but others should stay in their country!

by Anonymousreply 56March 28, 2021 9:55 AM

[quote]Cunts who think they should be allowed to live anywhere they want and want to take that away from others.

Absolutely. People like this believe deep down there is something inherently different about their background which makes them deserving of benefits that others shouldn't get. I'm sorry for the decent people out there screwed over by this, but these others who wanted their cake and to eat it too, well, they got what they deserve, and no sympathy from me.

by Anonymousreply 57March 28, 2021 9:56 AM

R56 they are used to Britannia waiving the rules. But that ship went down four decades ago. The politicos kept the illusion going to get elected. Keep, I mean.

by Anonymousreply 58March 28, 2021 10:08 AM

Which other EU countries do Brits have to leave in big numbers by the end of March? Maybe Portugal? I'm assuming they actually all have leave everywhere by this date.

by Anonymousreply 59March 28, 2021 10:10 AM

Can we join in the fun? We have some Spanish roots! We’ll even throw in Kale & Okra.

by Anonymousreply 60March 28, 2021 10:13 AM

by Anonymousreply 61March 28, 2021 10:14 AM

When is the next expansion of the EU? Which states will join? Montenegro? North Macedonia?

by Anonymousreply 62March 28, 2021 10:19 AM

R49, I've often wondered the same thing. It kinda interests me, how people manage to move around the world. I suppose with enough wealth you can probably get whatever you like, and certainly back then, only wealthy people would even be able to afford crossing the Channel.

I remember reading Christopher and His Kind, and in that there were all sorts of troubles with entering countries that ended up with Isherwood's boyfriend being sent back to Germany. But I also remember reading Agatha Christie's biography where she spoke about being able to travel to France as a child just by her mother booking a ticket, no need for passports or visas or anything. So I guess around the first world war, laws started to be introduced to curb unlimited travel and stays?

by Anonymousreply 63March 28, 2021 10:26 AM

I assume this is the hoards of Brits living on their pensions in Spain when I visited Andalusia they everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 64March 28, 2021 10:37 AM

Beach towns are great hide-outs, as they offer total anonymity and a “live and let live” type of vibe.

It’s mostly elderly Brits who figured out a way to collect their pension at home without ever actually registering in Spain/Portugal.

Nobody’s really going to bat an eye. Rent’s paid in cash. Just another old dibbie strolling along the boulevard. Not much of a problem while the UK was a member of the EU. Now that it’s over, they basically became tourist from outside the Schengenzone.

by Anonymousreply 65March 28, 2021 11:12 AM

R44 In fairness, something like 95% of "expats" voted to Remain. Someone earlier in the thread said a journalist must have had to look really hard to find the leave voters - I bet not. I bet most of the expats have been more than happy to point these idiots out to anyone who asks.

Wonder how all those ex-gangsters and other criminals voted.

I am genuinely curious what will happen with shows like A Place in the Sun and so on, despite the fact I've never actually watched them.

As for hypocrisy - some of the biggest complainers about benefits being paid out are benefit scroungers themselves.

by Anonymousreply 68March 28, 2021 12:55 PM

I don’t understand while it is considered some sort of human rights abuse for the UK to delete their illegals yet if UK citizens get deported, we should celebrate. Which is it? How come every country is able to have immigration law except the US and the UK.

by Anonymousreply 69March 28, 2021 12:56 PM

I think my own ties to England were hugely loosened over the last few years. And it’s a kind of liberation, if a sad kind.”

[quote]Fascinated as to what a Lookey Lookey Man is

They are the gentlemen from the continent to the south of Spain who circulate amongst beachfronts and beach towns with general merchandise for sale — bags, sunglasses, accessories of not quite verifiable provenance.

by Anonymousreply 101October 2, 2021 12:03 PM

I'm sorry, but I can't understand most of what was written in that article. The Brits the writer spoke to all sound retarded.

But I have absolutely no sympathy for any of them. They're all just a pack of crooked tax dodgers. They want what Spain had to offer but didn't want to pay their fair share to support the country they claimed to love so much. So fuck 'em. Kick 'em out Spain and be done with them.

by Anonymousreply 102October 2, 2021 12:05 PM

Obviously it's a good thing British is no longer in EU for the Europeans judging by some of these posts. How obnoxious. Our names me hate tourists even more.

by Anonymousreply 103October 2, 2021 8:15 PM

My sister lives in Barcelona (permanent resident for decades). She said everyone there is celebrating because 90% of the British tourists and immigrants there are arseholes. Maybe the non-arsehole Brits will start coming back for holidays now.

by Anonymousreply 104October 2, 2021 8:44 PM

I thought residence rights weren't affected by Brexit, but covered under a different agreement that includes non-EU Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland? EEC, EUA... something like that.

by Anonymousreply 105October 2, 2021 8:56 PM

r105, I guess Britain didn't bother to make such an agreement when it was covered by their EU membership. And I guess good ol' Boris Johnson or any of his other predecessors who had the job since the UK officially voted in favor of Brexit, failed to use their time to negotiate such an agreement.

It would be interesting to see what the UK government has done and accomplished that will replace all the EU deals and agreements and make life in the UK so much better. I mean, Brexit was decided in 2016. Now it's 2021.

by Anonymousreply 106October 2, 2021 9:21 PM

Thats what happens when you fall for a bunch of hucksters...think MAGA in the US....They placed the blame for their ills on Europe instead of on the Capitalists in Britain, just like Trump blamed immigrants and the Chinese for our woes. It was and is nothing but a distraction so the masses dont turn their focus on the rich AND MAKE THEM PAY.

by Anonymousreply 107October 2, 2021 9:27 PM

Exactly, R107. Ever since it happened, the higher-ups in Britain have been worried that the public could take a leaf out of the French's book when it comes to revolution.

by Anonymousreply 108October 2, 2021 9:36 PM

Do I understand this correctly?

British people who voted for Brexit thought the move wouldn’t apply to them outside of the U.K.?

by Anonymousreply 109October 2, 2021 10:03 PM

Got it in one, R109. As R48 said, they didn't think the leopards would eat THEIR face.

I can't bring myself to feel sorry for these people at all.

by Anonymousreply 110October 2, 2021 10:14 PM

Cheers to all the AbFab references.

by Anonymousreply 111October 2, 2021 10:18 PM

Were their homes seized? I haven’t this seen this on any of the shows where BRITs go to Spain to live a wonderful life. It’s time for us to see their ass getting kicked out of the country and a family who needed the housing to move into it. The new show could be called a day in the rain or fog.

by Anonymousreply 112October 2, 2021 10:18 PM

Wow. R110

I’m very behind on Brexit and don’t quite understand it all.

So jist of what I know - U.K. decided to break from the European Union. Which to me, seems like if a US state broke from the US in a sense, which I wish all the redneck welfare states would do.

I don’t get why they do this? I don’t understand? And I’ve seen a lot of news about food shortages and things, is it because of Brexit or Covid?

by Anonymousreply 113October 2, 2021 10:19 PM

r113...see r107

by Anonymousreply 114October 2, 2021 10:21 PM

I'm just excited to see idiots in other countries screw themselves over

by Anonymousreply 115October 2, 2021 10:56 PM

Can someone explain to me why people choosing to live in Spain would then choose to spend time at British pub instead of enjoying a Spanish establishment with superior food and good wine?

by Anonymousreply 116October 2, 2021 11:13 PM

R105 Why would any EU country agree to residence rights for Brits?

Being borderless is a huge draw for joining the EU. If the UK wants out and no longer contributes, why should they retain that perk?

These Brits are also not paying taxes to Spain.

by Anonymousreply 117October 2, 2021 11:39 PM

R116, I always assumed people like that move to Spain solely for the weather that they can't get back in the UK, not because there's anything they like about Spain in and of itself.

It always seemed very sad, like a real missed opportunity.

by Anonymousreply 118October 2, 2021 11:46 PM

I grew up in hot, sunny most of the year climate so beaches hold little allure for me. I'm more interested in the culture and history of a place visit. When I was in Spain I was soaking up local color and didn't go near American restaurants though I was told the TGIF was very popular with the after work younger crowd.

by Anonymousreply 119October 3, 2021 2:33 AM

This is for the best. Everyone should live in their own country

by Anonymousreply 120October 3, 2021 2:37 AM

Don’t be silly, they don’t want that foreign muck.

There were expat blogs devoted to the logistics of taking wheels of cheddar cheese from Britain into Spain before Brexit.

by Anonymousreply 123October 3, 2021 3:19 AM

Many of the Brits living in Spain don't even bother learning to speak the language.

by Anonymousreply 124October 3, 2021 3:50 AM

Ha ha. I can retire in Spain since I have French citizenship. Take that awful Brits.

by Anonymousreply 125October 3, 2021 3:58 AM

Beautifully put, r101. "Not quite verifiable provenance" -- I shall remember that phrase.

Now, r103 -- has the seizure passed? If so, you might want to proofread your post for... well, just check it.

by Anonymousreply 128October 3, 2021 10:19 AM

The Brit version of the Ugly American.

by Anonymousreply 129October 3, 2021 12:44 PM

Lol. Brits were told over and over and over by everyone that this is EXACTLY what would happen. The old racists and xenophobes refused to listen, so here you are. Zero sympathy. Cry about it.

by Anonymousreply 130October 3, 2021 12:46 PM

Victoria Wood did a great skit on a British woman in Spain showing off her linguistic prowess!

"Un poco de Red Leicester, por favor, Carmencita!" delivered in an appropriately heavy non-native accent.

by Anonymousreply 131October 3, 2021 1:28 PM

So true, R130. And they'll find any excuse to blame everyone else except themselves for everything to come.

Seriously what percentage of UK-residents-in-Spain voted for BREXIT? Actual numbers. You can always find some slob to say stupid stuff to a reporter. Most of them knew they were not registered and knew they would lose out if BREXIT passed.

by Anonymousreply 135October 12, 2021 6:00 PM

^ I listened to a radio show where an English expat living an France voted Leave because he hates all the usual stuff taut Brexiteers hate. He doesn’t plan on returning to the Uk, because he doesn’t like the traffic, the climate, the food and the foreigners.

by Anonymousreply 136February 10, 2022 8:49 AM

Oh, thank Jeebus. Now if we could only figure out a way to deport the fat Germans too...

by Anonymousreply 137February 10, 2022 9:15 AM

How has Brexit affected Brits living abroad who have resident visas in the country they moved to? Are their visas being cancelled and them kicked out?

by Anonymousreply 138February 10, 2022 10:23 AM

They seem rather dense, I know several people in Spain who have figured the new system out. There was plenty of warning and a process in place. Anyone who was already there had advantages not available going forward. Anyway Americans, more of these Brits will head to Florida now as it’s about the same stay limit. Look for electric kettle sales to go up in Florida.

I am an American traveling abroad and I was thoroughly confused by this BBC news coverage of the UK and France tussling over migrants crossing the channel on dinghys and why it was a problem. I completely blanked on the Brexit thing.

by Anonymousreply 143July 12, 2025 3:00 PM

Don't worry, dear. You'll be living in a caliphate very soon. I hope the UK and Europe enjoy their dhimmitude.

by Anonymousreply 144July 12, 2025 3:34 PM

Ah, here we go, the obligatory MAGA comment by that one poster who doesn't have the first clue about demography. Been hearing about the caliphate being just around the corner in Europe for about twenty years now. Aaany day now, I'm sure. "Keep voting for the fascists and the neo-Nazis, they're totes our friends!"
