Jeffrey Tambor

Re-read the 2018 NYT article about Arrested Development's final season, which was after Transparent's controversy and discussed Tambor yelling at Jessica Walter.

I just wonder how this asshole ever got the career he had. He's not THAT fucking magnificent. Yes, he can do comedy, but in a way that, before Transparent, I always confused him with a few other similar types.

Someone that fell into shit and came up smelling like roses multiple times. I don't get it.

He has gross little leathery lips

by Anonymousreply 1March 26, 2021 10:06 PM

He was truly wonderful in Transparent. It’s such a shame what he did to himself and his career.

by Anonymousreply 2March 26, 2021 10:12 PM

He replaced Kelsey Grammar in La Cage on broadway but left after only a few performances. I’d love to hear the story behind his abrupt departure.

by Anonymousreply 3March 26, 2021 10:15 PM

R2 I agree. And I really liked Season One and most of S2. But something happened midway through where you could tell even on screen.

by Anonymousreply 4March 26, 2021 10:16 PM

He was terrific on three different shows. How many actors, other than Julia Louis-Dreyfus, can say that?

by Anonymousreply 5March 26, 2021 10:20 PM

Loved him in The Larry Sanders Show.

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2021 10:21 PM

What exactly did he do? It was all really vague. I mean, no doubt he's an asshole, but specifics?

I feel like a bunch of these old white guys finally got called on the carpet and even then, they didn't fully understand what they'd done wrong because they'd gotten away with it for so long.

by Anonymousreply 7March 26, 2021 10:23 PM

And as Judge Kluger in The Good Wife

by Anonymousreply 8March 26, 2021 10:23 PM

I remember watching outtakes of Arrested Development where he “jokingly” started addressing the camera, and I just thought, “This guy is an [italic]asshole.”

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2021 10:31 PM

He's so annoying I couldn't make it past the first 30 minutes of The Death of Stalin.

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2021 10:31 PM

He was the worst part of The Ropers and that's saying something.

by Anonymousreply 11March 26, 2021 10:34 PM

He's known for being very obnoxious and cantankerous.

by Anonymousreply 12March 26, 2021 10:37 PM

Lol, r11. He made a career playing obnoxious, unlikeable characters. Guess he wasn’t really much of an actor.

by Anonymousreply 13March 26, 2021 10:57 PM

R4 Could you give an example? I really enjoyed this show and didn't notice anything.

by Anonymousreply 14March 26, 2021 11:02 PM

You beat me to it.

His small role on the Golden Girls is a good example.

R5 But didn’t she just play variations of the same character? He was better at creating fully realized individual characters.

by Anonymousreply 17March 26, 2021 11:08 PM

R7 He screamed at the late great Jessica Walter and was accused of being improper with three different women. The Jessica Walter thing got a bit of press because bland hack Jason Bateman stuck up for him.

by Anonymousreply 18March 26, 2021 11:09 PM

I think I first knew him from Mr. Mom where he gets punched by Michael Keaton

by Anonymousreply 19March 26, 2021 11:09 PM

I vaguely remember watching him in a bad movie about vampires

[quote]What exactly did he do? It was all really vague. I mean, no doubt he's an asshole, but specifics?

He was accused of sexually harassing two women (an actress on the show and his assistant) on the set of Transparent. He was also, in general an asshole to his assistant and others on the set. It got to the point when the damn producer of the show was scared of him.

And he admitted a lot of what they said was true:

[quote]“I drove myself and my castmates crazy,” he says. “Lines got blurred. I was difficult. I was mean. I yelled at Jill — she told me recently she was afraid of me. I yelled at the wonderful [executive producer] Bridget Bedard in front of everybody. I made her cry. And I apologized and everything, but still, I yelled at her. The assistant directors. I was rude to my assistant. I was moody. Sometimes I didn’t talk at all. And this is where the reader says, ‘So what?’ You know? ‘You’re coming in from the Palisades, you drive in, you get a good paycheck, you get to play one of the best roles in the world. So. What.’”

Beyond that he was in general an asshole to Jessica Walter on the set of Arrested Development. They had one big blowup as well which he admitted to and said he apologized. She agreed that he did apologize eventually.

The cast discussed this during a group interview when they were asked about his behavior on Transparent vs his behavior on Arrested Development:

[quote]“I have to let go of being angry at him,” Walter said. “He never crossed the line on our show, with any, you know, sexual whatever. Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize.”

When Jason Bateman basically said these things happen all the time she added:

[quote]“In like almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set.”

Below is audio of the cast discussing this.

Talented asshole.

by Anonymousreply 23March 26, 2021 11:44 PM

Thank you for that r22. Reading it as opposed to actually hearing how emotional Jessica was made a difference

by Anonymousreply 24March 27, 2021 12:04 AM

He was also on the TV version of 9-5 and the audiences hated him so much that in order to salvage another season, they replaced him with Peter Bonerz, Jerry from the bob Newhart show.

by Anonymousreply 25March 27, 2021 12:08 AM

I liked him in Hangover 2 or 3, he was good as Gallifinakis' dad: I didn't see any of those movies, but I saw a scene with him in it, and he had good dialogue in it and he fit as Gallifinakis' dad. He was also good in the very important Larry Sanders Show, which seems to have influenced many stand-up and other comedians. Garry Shandling was pretty important for comedy and a home away from home and a role model for many comedians, and he had those infamous basketball pickup games.

I didn't like the show; when I first saw some episodes when they came out, I kinda liked it, but I didn't like it that much when watching a few episodes two years ago and am glad I don't really need it in my collection, but it was an important show (Shandling seems to have been a spiritual, maybe faux-deep guy, who had a near-death experience when he was already working as a comedian (?), and was seriously injured); it also distanced me even more from stand-up comedy and stand-up comedians and also comedy. Tambor seems to have been another angry, ugly, oversexed American Jew; good that they are so active and trying to live life, but they often get disappointed a lot and expect too much and are too entitled.

by Anonymousreply 26March 27, 2021 12:56 AM

His first year as Maura was a really magical thing.

by Anonymousreply 27March 27, 2021 1:05 AM

R26 I don't know why you had drag his faith into this but whatever.

by Anonymousreply 28March 27, 2021 2:53 AM

Larry Sanders is a very witty, kinda sad show and he was PERFECT as Hank. He played vain and stupid well. All the characters including Larry were intentionally written as assholes.

He was also great in Arrested Development and Transparent. Maura was the most sympathetic character I have ever seen him play.

I completely believe he’s a jerk in real life, though.
