Lil Nas X goes to hell and fucks Satan in his new video

Too far?

by Anonymousreply 552April 27, 2021 8:20 PM

Well, he’s not downplaying the homosex.

by Anonymousreply 1March 26, 2021 7:05 PM

I love archetypal imagery, so this video was a real treat. But it also ensured his career is over in middle America.

by Anonymousreply 2March 26, 2021 7:11 PM

R2 Agreed. I hope he saved some of his "Old Country Time Lemonade" (or whatever it was called) money because he just shortened and narrowed his career.

Protip: Pose is over this season, and just because you are gay doesn't mean you have to fly into Lady Gaga/drag mode.

by Anonymousreply 3March 26, 2021 7:54 PM

I like him a lot, I just wish his music was better.

by Anonymousreply 4March 26, 2021 7:56 PM

He does not "fuck the Devil " OP. He gives the Devil a lap dance , kills him, steals his "afro horn braids" and then become the Devil himself.

by Anonymousreply 5March 26, 2021 8:23 PM

I like the devil imagery. But it's just not a good song. Lil Town Road (was that it?) was super catchy.

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2021 8:28 PM

Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 7March 26, 2021 8:54 PM

He’s taking his Miley Cyrus moment.

by Anonymousreply 8March 26, 2021 9:00 PM

I fucked Satan 50 years ago!

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2021 9:04 PM

Slides down the pole into hell lol.

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2021 9:46 PM

One hit wonder.

by Anonymousreply 11March 26, 2021 9:50 PM

Though he does double his voice, I can't detect a single instant of vocorder- is that possible?

by Anonymousreply 12March 26, 2021 10:06 PM

Good Lord in Heaven!

by Anonymousreply 13March 26, 2021 10:17 PM

Yes a one hit wonder

by Anonymousreply 14March 26, 2021 10:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 18March 27, 2021 1:35 AM

That was a really fun video. Probably the best I've seen in ages.

by Anonymousreply 19March 27, 2021 1:36 AM

I bet you Missy Elliot had something to do with that fabulous video ! But I agree,he just killed his middle america career deader than a shit house rat . Unmemorable song, but the video is mind blowing.

by Anonymousreply 20March 27, 2021 2:01 AM

[quote]Pose is over this season, and just because you are gay doesn't mean you have to fly into Lady Gaga/drag mode.

There are all kinds of gay men. Some are into the "Lady Gaga/drag mode." Some are not. That's okay. We should all learn to accept each other.

[quote]But I agree,he just killed his middle america career deader than a shit house rat

He's a rapper. He was never going to retain that audience.

Nothing he does is my style but I'm appreciative of a young, unapologetic, out gay man with a successful music career not shying away from who he is.

Interesting vid. I heard auto tune all over it though, r12. But I'm a sound editor so I can hear it easily.

by Anonymousreply 23March 27, 2021 2:37 AM

I never really cared for the Old Town Road hype but I really like this. Between the video lap dance scene and lyrics like "shoot a child in your mouth while I'm riding," I've never seen a mainstream gay male artist actually be that bold and explicit before.

by Anonymousreply 24March 27, 2021 2:44 AM

[quote] Too far?

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 25March 27, 2021 4:41 AM

Wow, you guys really think the young generation of "Middle America" gives a shit about religion.

Elderbrain dementia.

by Anonymousreply 26March 27, 2021 4:59 AM

"I love archetypal imagery, so this video was a real treat. But it also ensured his career is over in middle America. "

True. But, I kind of think he was getting out ahead of it. He had a pop hit and then came very publicly out. He could have sanded off the edges and maybe had another mainstream pop hit. But, if he wanted to "live his truth", he probably saw that the writing was on the wall. So, he seems to accept that he's going to be more niche and his audience narrower with this.

by Anonymousreply 27March 27, 2021 5:09 AM

Another bottom. Why can’t we ever get any famous tops to come out of the closet?

by Anonymousreply 28March 27, 2021 5:26 AM

His career is not over. This middle America that you’re talking about canceling him doesn’t even know who he is.

He’ll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 29March 27, 2021 5:40 AM

Almost everyone knows who he is. His sing was the biggest hit in years.

by Anonymousreply 30March 27, 2021 5:44 AM

He may get fucked by the devil when he dies if he goes to hell when he dies. Not funny.

by Anonymousreply 31March 27, 2021 5:53 AM

I agree he's autotuned every single note he "sings" in this.

by Anonymousreply 32March 27, 2021 6:00 AM

[quote] He may get fucked by the devil when he dies if he goes to hell when he dies. Not funny.

Thanks for alerting us to your fears, Miss Chastity Pariah.

by Anonymousreply 33March 27, 2021 6:02 AM

The autotune is stylistically intentional - for the sound editor that hasn’t listened to new music in the last 15yrs

by Anonymousreply 34March 27, 2021 6:26 AM

It sounds awful, r34.

by Anonymousreply 35March 27, 2021 6:28 AM

[quote] He may get fucked by the devil when he dies if he goes to hell when he dies. Not funny.

Don't worry. He was already going to hell for performing the devil's music.

by Anonymousreply 36March 27, 2021 6:45 AM

R35 subjective and not so relevant - my point was that it’s clearly autotuned so those pointing it out as if they had a trained ear or had picked up on something the musician had missed is embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 37March 27, 2021 6:47 AM

Has Tipper Gore issued a statement or is she still overcome - “shooketh“ as the kids say - by “Wet Ass Pussy”?

by Anonymousreply 38March 27, 2021 6:52 AM

Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 39March 27, 2021 6:56 AM

Of course it's autotuned. Let's skip that shit. I love the song, the video is gorgeous and sexy and that hot lil bitch can get it anytime he wants it. I love a man unafraid. I've watched it ten times and you can bet Adele and Ariana and Miley have too. This isn't marketing. It's brave sexy cool. Never mind middle America. Half the fags on this thread are clutching their rusty rosaries.

not all us been sleeping on Lil Nas XXX.

by Anonymousreply 40March 27, 2021 6:56 AM

OK, I tried a few of his moves on the sign pole outside and fell - because it’s a square pole and I need thigh-highs for height and balance.

by Anonymousreply 45March 27, 2021 10:19 AM

I think the funniest thing about Lil Nas X is that his father is a gospel singer in a church choir.

Someone get his dad "the vapors" and a fainting couch!

He looks a bit like Gene Anthony Ray when he was the same age. I wish the actor playing the devil in the video were more attractive though, so the lap-dance scene were hotter.

It's pretty much a stupid video, though it does make a bold statement. And it's not a good song at all.

by Anonymousreply 50March 27, 2021 5:45 PM

[quote] Has Tipper Gore issued a statement or is she still overcome - “shooketh“ as the kids say - by “Wet Ass Pussy”?

You need to update your references. Tipper Gore has laid low about music for more than three decades, and she's not even a Senate wife anymore.

by Anonymousreply 51March 27, 2021 5:47 PM

No thanx

by Anonymousreply 52March 27, 2021 6:08 PM

He's cute but are there any young gay men who are content to just be MEN? It's the make-up, wigs, sequins and high-heel stripper boots that lessen his sex appeal.

by Anonymousreply 53March 27, 2021 6:39 PM

Here here R53

by Anonymousreply 54March 27, 2021 6:52 PM

Why, he's sexy on and off the pole though R53. He's creative and plays with images, archetypes and new masculinity. He's GAY. Definitely GAY. We should celebrate him for that proclamation alone!! You're showing your age and your obsession with being a lifetime bottom R53, R54. I would guess that is about 75 years?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 55March 27, 2021 6:58 PM

I think it’s nice that he’s getting a lot of support from big deal rappers. Big Sean wrote a really sweet comment under his Instagram post congratulating him on the song

by Anonymousreply 56March 27, 2021 7:10 PM

R55 I WISH I had bottomed more, but due to having to deal with whatever the fuck 'new masculinity' is --which I assume is the bottoming/femme obsession you are projecting on me --I have been a top by a huge percentage.

by Anonymousreply 57March 27, 2021 7:23 PM

Big Sean is pretty cute, R56.

I wonder if "Big Sean" wants to be in "Lil Nas" quite deeply?

by Anonymousreply 67March 27, 2021 8:23 PM

Those type of people have been complaining about pop, rap, and rock music especially being Satanic for ages. It hasn’t affected the success of such music.

by Anonymousreply 68March 27, 2021 8:23 PM

I don’t care if he uses satanic themes in music, I just can’t stand a man who can rock stiletto-heeled thigh-highs. A percentage of people really feel it when our saggy old asses scrape against the pleather.

by Anonymousreply 69March 27, 2021 8:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 70March 27, 2021 8:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 71March 27, 2021 9:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 72March 27, 2021 9:08 PM

His bio states he once played trumpet, so I’m pulling a big-band swing resurgence prediction out of my ass. With enough sampling, he could have tons of covid-weight teens bouncing about via the tik-toks, R71.

Lil Nas X will be fine. For one, Black Millennials and Zoomers are far less homophobic than Gen X and older. Plus LNX will attract the same white hipster/skate crowd as Tyler the Creator, Daniel Caesar, Brockhampton and Frank Ocean have. Odd Future which Tyler and Frank were members had Satanic imagery too.

by Anonymousreply 91March 28, 2021 1:10 AM

Its a great song. I kind of wish the longer version in the video is what’s on streaming though. Also it’s been fun watching straight men react to the video on YouTube. Most don’t know what to do with themselves lmao

by Anonymousreply 92March 28, 2021 1:12 AM

Black people certainly aren’t the audience of anyone producing context featuring Satan and hell

by Anonymousreply 93March 28, 2021 1:17 AM

I'm not even a straight man and still found it kind of uncomfortable to watch. He's clearly tried a bit too hard with this one, and the shitty CGI makes it all look so cheap and tacky

by Anonymousreply 94March 28, 2021 1:32 AM

Context=content

by Anonymousreply 95March 28, 2021 1:37 AM

Well...he "had" an opportunity to be a role model for other black gay kids and men. Instead he decided to fag it up, rip off content, and force "edgy" which isn't really all that edgy.

by Anonymousreply 96March 28, 2021 1:41 AM

The discussion-reaction of black gay men who felt torn grown up in churches is illuminating — dazzling. Naz wrote a description in Variety, which includes the explanation for the text on the tree.

“The story opens in a lush Garden of Eden where Nas first introduces the theme of duality, which is displayed throughout the video,”. “He plays the role of Adam as well as the snake that tempts him into giving in to the carnal desires he was forbidden to explore, and we see the two merge and become one. Following a nod to Plato’s Symposium displayed on the tree of life, a shackled up Nas finds himself at his execution day in the Colosseum, where he is surrounded by and receiving judgment from various versions of himself. Once he has been executed, he ascends to heaven only to be pulled down to hell where he harnesses his sexuality to seduce the devil and strip him of his power as an evil force — and dismantling the throne of judgment and punishment that has kept many of us from embracing our true selves out of fear.”

by Anonymousreply 114March 28, 2021 12:12 PM

He’s a young artist. He’s not responsible for the entirety of his identity labels - there are plenty of wholesome role models. He gets to be what he wants to be and he’s going to do just that, as he clearly shows. He’s run into the fire (and brimstone) as loudly as he could. Good for him. Fuck the fear most of us grew up with. That’s role modeling too.

Big Gay Al Reynolds feels this is a bad branding move!

by Anonymousreply 132March 28, 2021 3:40 PM

I'm 63 and white and I absolutely love the song and the declicious video. Gen Z and younger don't care about your outdated, lingering, outrage over gender-bending or the in-your-face manner in which they embrace shifting, gender fluid identities. This ridiculous clinging to binary ideas of gender identity is stodgy and incredibly dull. Younger generations defiantly exhibit a subversive "devil-may-care" attitude and I applaud them for it. They're unabashedly, creatively agressive. If you're offended or put off by it, turn your appalled eyes to something more milquetoast. Something a little safer for your delicate sensibilities. Better yet, get off the fucking stage already and make room for future generations. This goes for any stage, political, creative, or social.

by Anonymousreply 133March 28, 2021 4:06 PM

r133 I dont think most people are offended by his message and a lot of people love him. I mean its 2021 and artists are already out here rapping about wet pussies. Some black ladies in their 60s told me they loved OTR but they couldn't remember his name lol. Its the branding issue...people look for consistency and this is not very consistent with what he's been doing for the last couple of years.

Artists are very sensitive and always feel like they aren't totally accepted because of social norms, when sometimes its not that deep. When you are selling a product people do have some expectations of what they are going to get. When you give them something else, even if its the same thing someone else is giving, it can go left. But he appears to be winning in this so good for him.

by Anonymousreply 134March 28, 2021 4:24 PM

A brand based on a country rap that appealed to elementary school kids is way more limiting.

by Anonymousreply 135March 28, 2021 4:28 PM

r135 true but there are levels in between country rap for kids and twerking your ass on the devil in a lacefront wig and thigh-high boots. Some people would have really enjoyed those steps in between I'm sure and lot of money could've been made.

by Anonymousreply 136March 28, 2021 4:36 PM

That's it, R130. You got it!

by Anonymousreply 137March 28, 2021 5:21 PM

Omg

by Anonymousreply 138March 28, 2021 6:08 PM

The video is fun. The song is OK my biggest critique is I don't like the reference to cocaine.

I LOVE that dumbass christians are mad haha. They have this obnoxious arrogance that they control everything culturally. Those days are over. Us millennials and gen zers are far less religious than the boomers and gen xers which is a good thing.

The song is currently #1 on itunes and I hope it stays there so radio will be forced to play this song.

If the wokesters on social media can get rid of the influence of religion in society that will be amazing. This is the first of many steps.

Lil Nas X is a brave young man. I didn't realize he's only 21. Hopefully his success will launch more openly gay musical acts

by Anonymousreply 139March 28, 2021 6:50 PM

I love it! Best thing I’ve seen in a while! Finally a gay man owning his sexuality in the mainstream instead of butching it up or being asexual

Naz actually denounces cocaine in the song.... Pretty sure that goes for the "Lookin' at the table, all I see is weed and white / Baby, you livin' the life, but nigga, you ain't livin' right" reference, too... While, he may be going to hell for sex, me thinks Naz is promoting sobriety — especially in the African-American community.

R145, why do you have such a problem with bros?

by Anonymousreply 146March 28, 2021 7:49 PM

A lot of cheap and easy responses here.

I suspect most DL-ers aren't too taken aback by the imagery. More eye-rolling than pearl-clutching.

The knee-jerk race allegations are weak, and frankly risible. It is the last refuge of not having a good argument--and it really borne out of the femme/masculine/generational debate which is more legitimate. But, the racist thing is thrown in as a kind of emotional chum to up the feeding frenzy.

Now excuse me as I superciliously sweep my scarf over my shoulder and stride away....

by Anonymousreply 147March 28, 2021 7:50 PM

Middle America LOVED Marilyn Manson so the argument that Lil Nas X , a black artist, would lose that demographic but Marilyn Manson, a white artist, thrived is inherently racist.

by Anonymousreply 168March 28, 2021 11:50 PM

Even if his song sucks. Lil Nas X still deserves props for being openly gay, having a flaming aesthetic and plus he's hot. I love how he pisses off racist conservative country fans and now homophobic Christians.

Why does DL have millions of threads on boring ass Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber who are "straight" and also have shitty music? At least talk about hot gay guys with bad music too. Steve Grand is the only one with a ton of threads and it's because he's a social media slut.

by Anonymousreply 208March 29, 2021 5:44 PM

I don’t get why you all think everyone taking issue with the video is a homophobe. No. I even see many gays taking issue with it.

It’s not the gay visuals upsetting them, it’s the satanic message and visuals.

And the video is a bad look for gays.

by Anonymousreply 209March 29, 2021 5:51 PM

R205

Those gay and bi people should realize that Satanists are not the problem. Satanism is about loving and accepting yourself, pretty much. Gay men are prominent in the Satanic Temple, the majority of which are actually LGBTQ+ people who have been outcast and taught to hate themselves for who they are by Christians. Satanists even have a history of trolling the biggest homophobes in the church. Why is that bad for gays?

by Anonymousreply 214March 29, 2021 6:36 PM

Almost all people objecting to the video are doing so based on the satanic and demonic content, not sexuality. A lot of people like Nick Young who previously liked and supported Lil Nas X object to it on the basis it contains evil and satanic content. I’ve heard many a gay person express the same objections. It’s the demonic stuff that has upset people, and for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 223March 29, 2021 7:08 PM

R213

That is what Satanism is about - basically self-worship and loving, accepting, and being yourself without the influence of others - and this video perfectly displays that. It is meant to be empowering and most gay people do see that.

by Anonymousreply 224March 29, 2021 7:21 PM

Uh no. Gay and bisexual people don’t need the worst stigma and association of all. Satanism is considered the worst thing possible.

by Anonymousreply 225March 29, 2021 7:27 PM

Im sure there is some trolling on this thread. But as I mentioned before a lot of people's issue with the video is simply that it's such a huge departure from what he was doing before, it has nothing to do with homophobia, Satanism or anything like that. Entertainers go through this a lot, gay and straight and otherwise.

The audience generally puts people in a box. TS Madison is another black LGBT personality who had a hard time with career transition, but it was the other way around. She did black tranny porn and now has a show on WETV. It took years for people to accept her new career that didn't include porn.

Thank you! So sick of the ugly New Puritanism on Datalounge. We would all have loved someone like Nas ten years ago. I'm from the UK and we adore the video here. 50% of people in the UK are atheists and don't believe in Satan, so we just see it as a glorious piece of theatrical social commentary.

Nike suit filed today in New York federal court

[quote]Nike is suing MSCHF for trademark infringement and dilution and unfair competition. It's seeking compensatory, statutory and punitive damages, plus disgorgement of profits in an amount to be determined and is asking the court to order that the shoes and all marketing materials be turned over to Nike for destruction.

Artists don’t make money of music anymore, somwhat you do is this:

- create a mediocre song (nobody pays attention to the music anyway) with an outrageous video. - associate an equally outrageous luxury item with the song/video. - conservative pundits (via Fox, etc.) will protest and “woke” pundits (via Slate, Salon, etc.) will defend the video/item. - lots of debate about the video on social media and free promotion. - you’ve just earned nearly a million dollars in a couple of days

by Anonymousreply 262March 30, 2021 8:05 AM

The song for "Montero (Call Me By Your Name") is not a big deal, but the video is cool. In a world where hysterics see the devil in everything, it is refreshing for a singer to show up giving his ass to Satan himself. And it goes further: in the end, Lil Nas X plucks the bad thing's horns and crowns himself as the new King of Darkness.

by Anonymousreply 263March 30, 2021 8:23 AM

I love that currently there's over 10X the amount of likes to dislikes on his video.

Nike uses sweatshop labor and marks up the price of it's shoes because of the brand. I'm sure they've stolen designs of unknown designers too. They have the nerve to sue LNX for making a shoe similar to theirs and having it be Satan themed. They need to gtfo.

by Anonymousreply 266March 30, 2021 10:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 278March 30, 2021 4:15 PM

Lil Nas X didn't use them, it's the company issuing them that is being sued. And it's also a protected act to take existing products and enhance them and resell them, so Nike has a bit of an uphill climb on this one.

Nike also didn't protest when someone made Jesus Nikes awhile back, so that will work against them as well.

Good and evil? Sure, that exists. Satan and God (also hell and heaven, demons and angels) are just human creations to give us some, imaginative, visual aid.

It's the good ol' "half glass empty" vs. "half glass full". You either decide that you believe

- Everything is bad and everything sucks (and there is plenty of proof for that),

or

- You believe life is great (and there is plenty of proof for that as well).

I don’t think it is appropriate for kids though. They don’t need to be watching lap dances from anybody, gay or straight. This is adult stuff. I’m just confused by all of the haters on DataLounge of all places. This is the gay mainstream art we needed. And the pop star who created it is actually a gay man, which is a huge shift from the Lady Gaga and Macklemore types of gay mainstream empowerment anthems. What Lil Nas X has delivered is revolutionary for gay mainstream artists. Fuck the bullshit haters. The only other recent gay huge pop success was Sam Smith, and I don’t recall him making anything particularly empowering for gay people.

by Anonymousreply 332April 1, 2021 6:19 AM

I’ve only gotten up to response 187. But I can’t believe the dark cloud that still resides over the gay community, the fear that we still have to try so hard to get those who obviously hate us to like us - still. He can’t be flammimg because I got beat up as a kid for being flammimg. We can’t bend genders, that just makes us look like sissies and it’s gonna make them hate us more. We can’t fuck with Satan - well because he’s real and the church will be mad. JESUS CHRIST you people, the definition of Stockholm syndrome.

And all of you saying it’s a career ruining move. Maybe the kid doesn’t want mass selling Coca Cola at the super bowl appeal. Maybe he wants to put the biggest bullet in that idea of who he is while he has a major platform to do it. Maybe he’d rather just fucking be his daring self and have fans who love him for him and not for whom they think he is. I mean he already tasted huge fame and it probably felt extremely claustrophobic from what it was forcing him to become.

And I’ve always loved the fact that Mr. Fuck You Like an Animal NIN Trent Reznor is sampled in OTR and gave his blessing. Lil Nas was already giving a two finger fuck you to middle America but they were too dumb to realize it. And they still dragged him over the coals, not for being gay but black. Fuck ‘em.

Why on earth are will still trying to make them feel comfortable with our presence? Yet katty Perry can talk about bringing out her “big balloons?”

My only fear is the white hot heat of the energy he’s bringing down on himself will obliterate him. He just kicked a door wide open for a whole generation of young artist who’ve been hiding their entire lives but he might get sacraficed for it. BUT I applaud and thank him for doing so - for us.

And no matter how you feel, we need to support this move. Because if we don’t, the world definitely won’t and will use us as the excuse to silence this type of bravery.

by Anonymousreply 334April 1, 2021 6:29 AM

Not for nothing (and a bit of shameless promotion) this video really charged me. I’m a 45 year old black designer who grew up in the Baptist Church. I know exactly the anger this kid is speaking from. The fuck it all attitude. I consider getting over the church one of the greatest achievements of my life. I created my t-shirt line around it. Yet even still I find myself tip-toeing around the imagery, my ideas. I know what I feel in my heart but I’m still trying not to anger those who were only all too comfortable making me hate myself.

And here comes this 21 yo kid with everything to lose in such a major way blantantly forcing those exact same people to look at themselves. He’s not poking the bear, be shot the damn thing in the head and told them to come pick up the body.

This is my exact testimony:

“ Baptist Training Union was born from my roots growing up in the Southern Baptist Church. It’s a celebration of community, of a shared experience. This is not an affirmation of religious tenets. Baptist Training Union is a reclaiming of the words that once guided me - words that were then used against me - and turning them into inspiration for the clothes that I design.

This is a love letter to those traditions that I can now look back on and honor in my own way, in my own voice and sense of style. And It’s my hope to continue that sense of community, through my clothes, with like-minded individuals, who have discovered the power and freedom of self-expression on this side of the cross – people who remember their roots, but bear their own fruit.”

Lil Nas is my God - my next tee.

jesus fucking christ.... don't be such a loser. less than 50 percent of Americans belong to a religious organization anymore. At fucking last. Satan is an archetype of temptation and sometimes our deepest desires. Nas explores more than one mythology in this video. Some of it very personal to a young black gay AMERICAN man. And he's winning. The kids don't care. They love the song and it's imagery. And who can't identify with being weak for a man who's bad for you but so good to please? Datalounge has lots of cool posters of all ages. The so called "trolls" are not from Lipstick Alley. Just some old gay white men, like always. They are disguising their racism in concern about what this *says* about the gay community. Ha. The song says dick about the gay community. Lil Nas X tells you in great detail about the songs origin and personal meaning. Satan is metaphoric, duh. But the man who inspired the song is not. See the video @ R294. It ain't that deep. Lil Nas X a sexy young man of desires and self awareness.

So many ancient white gay bottoms are fingering their mothers' pearls this easter.........shocked by some sneakers and a hit song?

by Anonymousreply 370April 1, 2021 10:42 PM

I agree with most of your post, but some of the trolls definitely are from Lipstick Alley. The Bible thumper complaining about gay white men being demonic or w/e especially.

by Anonymousreply 371April 1, 2021 10:47 PM

I think the prosperity preachers who hoard all the money are the bad guys here. There is so much evil in this world but if you look closely enough, it’s not the black people who are causing the world’s problems. They are the victims of it.

About 6 or 7 people run the entire world. Start there if you want to find the source of all the misery.

Yes, it's them! Don't kill me!

We have a lot of ancients who love to complain about what people wear to church these days and how when they were children, "my brother and I were resplendent in matching bowties and starched white shirts and Mother always worse pristine white gloves!"

When you see a post like that and look at the posting history, occasionally it'll be a troll but more often than not you'll see a lot of hissing about people not drinking milk anymore and how 1967 ruined music forever.

by Anonymousreply 383April 2, 2021 3:20 AM

Theses are aftermarket designs. So to all the idiots who just can’t comprehend this, Nike had nothing to do with it. The company bought Nikes and then added the regalia.

I just don’t understand what is so hard to digest about that. It’s just not getting through to some real dim bulbs around here.

by Anonymousreply 387April 2, 2021 7:09 AM

R385 "Pushing boundaries" just means that someone doesn't have enough actual talent and/or isn't interesting in and of themselves without doing something like cross-dressing to try and stand out. It's like using autotune.

by Anonymousreply 403April 3, 2021 12:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 404April 3, 2021 12:48 PM

Justin Bieber who is mediocre in every way has a massive following especially when he "found" God and got married. So Evangelicals and suburbanites love him and forget about his shitty behavior.

Lil Nas X is black and gay and that will always be a penalty against him in the eyes of these Republicans. Also, he isn't playing it safe and his music is getting more sexual. Unlike Harry, Tyler and Frank Ocean who try to be sexually ambiguous. Nas is no longer hiding his love of cock and anal. So he isn't fulfilling the sexless gay friend stereotype in the media either.

Sure he isn't the first or only gay artist to do this but he has a massive mainstream platform and success which makes the "Montero" video more groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 405April 3, 2021 1:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 407April 3, 2021 1:11 PM

R394 Jesus was totally gay. He wore caftans on the daily, had a posse of celibate male hangers-on, his father was God but he more often professed his love for his mother, he had a prostitute for a hag. His final act on Earth was to throw a dinner party.

Not to mention how he so easily gave up working with his stepdad at the v.masc family business, to become a personal motivational speaker and showman, yet as far as we know he did not do this in order to fuck tons of young straight women who would no doubt have been obsessed with his flowing locks. He had a penchant for cleanliness and civil polite behaviour in an age not known for that.

Then there’s all that Xtian iconography—in Churches, dogmatic texts, on relics and murals—which depicts him half or mostly naked and muscular. And his reaction to that flogging by Pilate was kind of....uhhhh...hmmm. I’m just saying.

by Anonymousreply 408April 3, 2021 1:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 409April 3, 2021 1:32 PM

Who the hell believes in, well, hell anymore? And is actually concerned with devil imagery to the degree it might hinder their eternal "soul"?

No one I know. The video is just silly, sexy fun.

What’s funny to me is that the explicitly-gay rap of late actually seems less homoerotic and less gay in sensibility than earlier works. Guess the verboten makes art more intense, or something.

And not to be that guy, but...closeted rappers seem to have better flow? Maybe because of all that pent-up emotion and rage and vitriol (the foundation of rap as we know it)? I’m not condoning homophobia, but there does seem to be something to the theory. Don’t come for me, I’m just saying.

by Anonymousreply 436April 5, 2021 12:53 PM

How do you know closeted rappers are gay or bi?

by Anonymousreply 437April 5, 2021 12:58 PM

This concept is way too literal, and frankly juvenile.

Satan doesn’t come dressed in red with horns and he doesn’t sit on a throne demanding your grateful service;he comes dressed as an angel, who offers to serve you and give you everything you ever wanted...that’s the trick of the whole deal.

by Anonymousreply 438April 5, 2021 1:45 PM

R438 That's the point.

American Christians tend to take The Bible literally and they really do see Satan as a red skinned horned demon who rules over hell. Evangelicalism is anti-intellectual and relies on fear-mongering, shock value and prosperity preaching to keep its followings.

by Anonymousreply 439April 5, 2021 1:49 PM

I love how familiar r438 is with satan’s sartorial choices, like he has first hand experience. Let me guess, angels are dressed in white with wings, blond hair, blue eyes, soft curls?

First of all, neither exist. And Lil Nas X is portraying him just as every iconic cultural time period he shows in the video references him.

by Anonymousreply 440April 5, 2021 1:51 PM

R439 if you think a Satan exists YOU’RE taking the Bible just as literally as the Evangelicals you are bemoaning.

by Anonymousreply 441April 5, 2021 1:54 PM

Well, you said it R440. It’s nothing new. It’s Hallowe’en-costume levels of aesthetic and artistic intelligence. Like what someone else said ultbread about a new Dark Ages. All these youngsters aren’t actually educated enough to think about what they’re saying, or how to reinterpret and reinvent cultural tropes in a way that applies to our world and to something beyond it.

The truly courageous thing would have been to expose the ritual sex abuse in the rap game itself. Many hundreds of young men, boys, and vulnerable women have been brutalised and raped and left with nothing in the wake of the big name ballers who currently enjoy adulation and $$$$. That’s the real seductive evil.

But of course, speaking on that means no career for Lil dude...

This is on par with Madonna kissing a black Jesus’s feet. They are pop stars. Simplicity is key and you still have to entertain.

by Anonymousreply 444April 5, 2021 2:04 PM

R439, uh Christians who read the Bible certainly don’t see Christians that way. The red horn and pitchfork depiction is found in popular, extrabiblical culture, not Christianity.

'It’s teens who are losing their minds over this' - considering Nas is only 21, I'm sure he is absolutely fine with that. Teens are a huge, passionate audience who spend a lot of money on merch, love gigs and stream manically.

Mock hipsters and ‘olds’ all you want. At least we actually have a metric of quality, gained through experience.

P.S. Lil Nas X will be considered over-the-hill by a gay yardstick and a pop-culture yardstick in nine years and counting. That ain’t long. Synchronise watches...

by Anonymousreply 480April 6, 2021 11:06 PM

What a weird take R480. Every current music star's career is over in less than 9 years. Lil Nas X is having a moment. A big one.

Sam Smith's pop career is already over and Adam Lambert never even had one.

What wrong with celebrating a gay man who celebrates being gay? Nas is transformative actually. Timing is everything. And he's sexy. Being sexy always changes people's minds. The song is fun too.

by Anonymousreply 481April 6, 2021 11:18 PM

R481, I don’t celebrate demonic or Satanic imagery or content. I don’t care who is doing it

by Anonymousreply 482April 6, 2021 11:23 PM

R481 yeah, if you read what I wrote you know I didn’t say shit about hating pop music, denigrating gay men, or Lil Nas looks. I also don’t have any issue to Satanic content (whatever, doesn’t bother me, not about to clutch pearls over desert-cult adherents), and furthermore I didn’t make any comparisons to other pop stars either (past or present). So it turns out you were just pulling strawmen out of your ass for no reason. Sorry you wasted your energy on that...

To reiterate for the less literate, my point was merely that all these posters drooling over him and praising his genius will be singing a different tune the second he hits a wall or stops being popular. Brutal truth is, we gays eat our own, and very rarely admit anyone into our cultural pantheon. Could happen for LNX, but it’s highly unlikely. Just being realistic, not trying to hurt feelings (though it’s really not my fault that feelings are fragile...)

by Anonymousreply 483April 6, 2021 11:27 PM

^ that's miss warwicke, the racist shitstain of datalounge. It imagines itself to be superior in intellect. Really just a racist old white man, who is also happens to be the SCAT troll.

by Anonymousreply 484April 6, 2021 11:31 PM

R474 huh? Dude, you are crazy and so off too the mark lol🙈🙈FYI I’m a young (well, ish, idk if 28 counts as young, probably not to you perverted vampires) female, who is not a racist and thinks anything sexual to do with shit is totally gross and disgusting. And idek who ‘Miss Warwicke’ even is?? But far be it for me to spoil your cute little investigation...keep at it, Inspector Gadget...

by Anonymousreply 485April 6, 2021 11:41 PM

Your posts are tedious, thin skinned and rather pointless R480/R483/R485. Carry on young woman. With whatever it is you think you're doing. How the fuck do you speak for gay men though? Or black men or music culture? The gay "yardstick"? Huh. DUDE, you're a liar. You went from being a hipster, to an OLDS to a 28 year old chick, all in one messed up minute. Ish. Bish.

by Anonymousreply 486April 6, 2021 11:55 PM

'Lil Nas X will be considered over-the-hill by a gay yardstick and a pop-culture yardstick in nine years and counting. '

Long enough for him to earn about 50m, while you slave like a dog and only make 50k a year.

by Anonymousreply 487April 7, 2021 12:10 AM

Hypocrites. So many hypocrites.

Reflexivity costs nothing, and grows dignity. But one has to choose it.

by Anonymousreply 488April 7, 2021 12:21 AM

Willing to bet X couldn’t nick the ear of one of his parrain in a battle situation, let alone cut off any heads...

Listening to O.G. No Limit lately makes it clear to me—there has been a major drop-off in quality and ability of rappers, from the top of the tree to the bottom. Since the mid-2000s, talent has been lacking. You can hear an obscure joint from a midtier rapper, released say ‘97 or ‘02, and have your mind exploded by the technique and lyricism and attitude, in a way that rap now just can’t accomplish.

My personal favourite verse in the game gives us a little insight....

[quote] B.G.: Ain't that cold? I heard a nicca downed my nicca/My pardna’ just paged me, and say dey found my nicca/It's a bust back thang, cain’t be no hoe/I got a hundred rounds plus, for mah’ Calico/Fa’ sho’, we gets busy, and leave that ass fonky/Full of that monkay, boy it’s time to act a donkey/I'mma go git, in my all black fit/When I come, just sit/‘Cuz if ya flinch, ya hit/If ya split, ‘cha split: if you die, you die/I’m takin’ ten-for-one—bye-bye, bye-bye/You dun’ took mine, I’mma take yearn’/This is what'cha earn—chopper bullets burn/S.K. trigga clicker, the blunt-smoker lighter flicker/Paper-chase up the six figures, ‘fo my issue/I'mma get to split ‘cha, gitcha—if ye in my way? I'mma deal wit'cha/Muthafucka’ take a picture!/I'll wax that ass, then tax on my ‘yay, “good day”/if play, I lay with the A.K/To spray and lay down, the snaps I get down/Nicca cain’t touch what me & Bun puttin' down/Now crowned, I come round, I distribute keys/You sleep six feet; I tear down the whole street/Wear down the family; they grieve, because ya flat/Bust ya head up, leave ya deader, yo’blood redder/I dun’ fucked ya, sit down—nicca, ‘hut?/Nicca, what? Rap "music" is garbage. At least lil nas' songs are catchy and short. And don't feel so ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 490April 7, 2021 7:48 PM

R490 so to be viable and legitimate enough to make money, a rap has to say nothing meaningful or complex, not offend the listeners’ sense of security, keep silent about the reality of the artists making it, and not run over three minutes. Gotcha.

And they say compassion, depth and intelligent thinking in music is dead nowadays...

by Anonymousreply 491April 7, 2021 8:02 PM

The original hot-take on Hell and Christian morality came out exactly 20 years ago, courtesy of Pastor Troy, and it’s way better than...whatever it is X is trying to do.

by Anonymousreply 493April 7, 2021 8:32 PM

Call My By Your Name and Ol Town Road are both songs. Nas is a singer, not a rapper.

by Anonymousreply 497April 10, 2021 2:41 PM

R468 she seems a smart young woman, and makes an articulate soundly-critical judgement. What’s so awful about her? (forgive my ignorance, I’ve not got the first idea who she is).

by Anonymousreply 498April 10, 2021 5:28 PM

We're still complaining about this?

by Anonymousreply 499April 10, 2021 5:31 PM

CMBYN is set to be number one on the Hot 100 on Monday.

by Anonymousreply 500April 10, 2021 10:41 PM

The song is number one in the UK on the official Top 40.

by Anonymousreply 501April 10, 2021 10:42 PM

R501 well, the 14-16 year olds will be pleased.

Just went to look up what was #1 in the U.K. Top 40 in the April of my 14th year; it was ‘Beautiful Liar’, the collaboration track by Beyoncé & Shakira. Taking aside the faux-lesbian titillation video and the overblown melismatic duelling vocals, as pop/dance music goes “ it’s simply a better-produced and more accessible song with more melodic sound than ‘MONTERO’. This killed it in the clubs and on the radio, and it still has a catchy sexy Urban Latin feel that hasn’t dated badly at all.

2007 still has no room to talk r.e. trashy gritty attention-whoring chart-toppers, of course. I’m not implying that the industry or that celebrity artists are any worse today that they were then, just that composition and production of pop music used to be objectively and technically better.

We love him

by Anonymousreply 503April 11, 2021 6:45 PM

This whole fiasco is so juvenile and silly. "I'm Satan! sliding a stripper pole to Hell!"

by Anonymousreply 504April 11, 2021 7:05 PM

R504 true. There’s nothing objectively sexy, beautiful, cool or artistic about it. It’s just tacky “look at me!” horror-porno schlock. It’s on a level with Marilyn Manson.

by Anonymousreply 505April 11, 2021 7:06 PM

Nahh, it's pretty damn sexy

by Anonymousreply 506April 11, 2021 7:57 PM

Not really

by Anonymousreply 507April 11, 2021 8:07 PM

It is sexy. I pop a boner every time I watch it. I want Lil Nas X and his sexy ass.

by Anonymousreply 508April 11, 2021 8:42 PM

#MeToo R508. Lil Nas X is sexy as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 509April 11, 2021 9:15 PM

LOVE that this song debuted at #1 on the Hot 100

well done! First out gay rapper to achieve that feat!

by Anonymousreply 510April 11, 2021 10:45 PM

It's number one in all the major markets - Canada, Australia, UK, US.

by Anonymousreply 511April 11, 2021 11:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 512April 12, 2021 2:43 AM

R514 I'd say the "message" is to cash in on being trashy and offensive.

by Anonymousreply 515April 17, 2021 6:23 PM

I wanted a shirt with just his image in that last part of the video, with the horns on.

by Anonymousreply 516April 17, 2021 8:20 PM

R514, it needs to be “Satin” and nobody wants a white t-shirt. I’m not wearing it to watch cartoons. It needs to be blood red.

And fitted. I want it to be fitted.

by Anonymousreply 517April 17, 2021 8:27 PM

More about the shirt;

Don’t bother with James Perse cotton; those may be made in USA, but they are not what the used to be. Somebody else has manufacturing in the USA.

Also, I want some elastane, but not a crazy amount.

I also want a pony.

by Anonymousreply 518April 17, 2021 8:32 PM

Candace Owen? I hate people who talk by asking a thousand questions and then posting nothing. She mentions people up to nefarious things? Who are these people and their nefarious plan? Idiots always believe they are being controlled by some secret invisible force. Not that we aren't being led or controlled by something. But its not always some nefarious plan with our demise in mind.

by Anonymousreply 519April 17, 2021 10:49 PM

]' I'd say the "message" is to cash in on being trashy and offensive.'

by Anonymousreply 521April 17, 2021 11:39 PM

Is there any gay person in the public eye that woke vultures don’t try to cancel? I thought black folks were exempt for that for that but I guess not if you’re gay. I mean Azalea Banks has been islamophobic several times but because she’s a black woman it’s fineZ

by Anonymousreply 522April 18, 2021 12:43 AM

R520 Boring and stupid.

by Anonymousreply 523April 18, 2021 1:51 AM

It's more boring and stupid to keep criticizing a cute black man for having the #1 Billboard song. It's just a song. Cute and sexy. Gay like hell. FUCK. Like Lil Nas X himself!

by Anonymousreply 524April 18, 2021 1:58 AM

What's best to me about this is the naysayers who called him a one-hit wonder have now skulked away, eating Jim Crow.

by Anonymousreply 525April 18, 2021 3:17 PM

It has nothing to do with Jim Crow. It's just him being basic. I was raised Roman Catholic, though no longer a Christian for decades now. That's schtick is Madonna level silliness. Seriously? This site is getting spammed from LSA trolls as of late.

by Anonymousreply 526April 18, 2021 3:33 PM

The child was raised fundie baptist, R526. He gets to throw a fit just like anyone else. You’ve seen it before?

Just wait until you have gray, grizzled balls - everything repeats itself. At least they’re not pushing his daily musings using instagram. That bullshit won’t even load without an account.

by Anonymousreply 527April 18, 2021 3:39 PM

R524 More like criticizing him for being a cheap shock artist. It's not surprising that this sells media, but also not the point.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 528April 18, 2021 4:03 PM

R526, my point was that he's selling well beyond what those who called him a one-hit wonder predicted, and he's penetrated crossover markets to reach #1 once again. Silly, basic, or not, it sells. And that's exceptional for an unapologetically out black artist.

by Anonymousreply 529April 18, 2021 4:41 PM

Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 532April 18, 2021 9:47 PM

I don't like it. I know this is an unpopular opinion. I'm sorry, I just don't like the song. I tried to like it. I just don't think it's very catchy.

by Anonymousreply 533April 18, 2021 9:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 534April 18, 2021 10:02 PM

Like “WAP” this is all about the video and stirring controversy. The music is inconsequential. It could’ve been bagpipe music and no-one would’ve noticed or cared.

by Anonymousreply 535April 21, 2021 6:25 AM

Wap is pretty vulgar. Montero is a story of feeling week and going over for that dick and doing some drugs with a man you can't resist. It's no more controversial than any honest song. What's new is the mainstream gay aspects and acceptance. From all communities. The video is the SHOW. Who don't want to see a fine ass young chocolate man give a lap dance in some underwears and boots? Take the dick and leave with the crown. Lil Nas X took a risk with this song and video. The story is true and all too familiar to anyone with a dick or hot butthole. SEXY and dirty and sweet and playful with just a bit of remorse. Yet he prevails. It's quite a brilliant piece of eye and ear and gay soul candy. Nothing like WAP at all.

by Anonymousreply 536April 21, 2021 7:03 AM

*weak

by Anonymousreply 537April 21, 2021 7:04 AM

I don’t know how any gay person can still attack this. Just looking at social media, it has empowered so many gay men. What is the problem?

by Anonymousreply 538April 21, 2021 11:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 541April 23, 2021 2:53 AM

Fuck off. He identifies as a Black man. A 21 year old OUT gay Black man. A creative 21 year old GAY BLACK MAN. A hot sexy young black man with the number one song in the world. GAY BLACK FLEX.

emphasis is mine, fool @ 541.

Lil Nas X is sentient as fuck. He's beyond your comprehension.

by Anonymousreply 542April 23, 2021 3:09 AM

R542 Clearly missing the point that ALL humans are sentient. Apparently the meaning of the word is beyond your comprehension.

You may now piss off, jackass.

by Anonymousreply 543April 23, 2021 3:19 AM

I see your other posts R543. I didn't miss anything about you. Miss me with your racist baiting bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 546April 23, 2021 3:50 AM

Only pathetic Klan Granny trolls talk about blocking on here.

by Anonymousreply 547April 24, 2021 12:30 AM

R539, using the word "sentient" in that context does not make you look smart. And being some unnecessary apologist for dear Montero, who doesn't need you, makes you look like a strange kind of air-breathing race case.

by Anonymousreply 548April 24, 2021 12:52 AM
