I've loved her ever since she played the nasty Ava on the brief TV series of "Bare Essence" where her character would make an entrance and say in a phony way, "Kiss, kiss!" Also great as the society wife in "The Flamingo Kid". Along with Holland Taylor, she was always commanding every time she would make an entrance and take over the scene.

If I ever manage to give a disdainful look half as well as she did, I will consider my life's work complete. Interesting that she and George Segal died within such a short time period. They played married/previously married multiple times
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 25, 2021 7:09 PM |
No way! Oh man, she was the best thing about Arrested Development. I discovered her in her later years, I guess (AD, Archer). I was shocked she had co-starred in a cult classic with Clint Eastwood back in the day (Play Misty for Me).

I have JUST been enjoying the HELL out of Lucille Bluth, again, watching Arrested Development for the umpteenth time. She always stood out as the best character with the funniest lines played by the best actor of the entire cast. She was excellent, and will not be forgotten.

This was my favorite Lucille scene, it's short and this clip cuts it off even shorter. It should be 6 seconds instead of three. It's the only one I can find. In the show, once she is off screen, fallen to the floor, no one looks, they just keep on partying and it's too funny.

[R88] 'Unlikeable' characters was kind of the whole point of the show. The clue is in the title.

Arrested Development is like The Office, a cultural phenomenon that has a few stellar moments but is overall subpar; its popularity is perpetuated by dissociative millennial losers who like the eye-rolling, sarcastic humor.

I had no idea she was married to Ron Liebman, who I adored as a young kid. He was so fantastic in Norma Rae, but in countless other performances, too. I'm sad for Jessica that she lost him at the end of 2019, but this happens so often when one partner dies. She was just not that interested in sticking around. Will truly miss her wit and presence.

[R107] They also later revived it, and it's currently #83 on IMDB Top Rated TV of all time, so yeah, it's well loved.. It was never a show that was going to appeal to the masses. Arrested Development is probably what Jessica Walter is best remembered for so it's normal to talk about it, particularly when one milquetoast 'my opinion is objective truth' poster slagged off the show. And no-one likes a Hall Monitor.

Hilarious... the people on here who think that Arrested Development isn’t Basic Bitch Entertainment. It’s for people who shit on Friends, but thought Seinfeld was edgy. The same attitude as a bunch of anarchistic misanthropes who believe they’re better people for listening to Indie Rock or drinking coffee from independent coffeehouses. I’m sure they’re all boring, unoriginal people in real life who believe they can attach themselves to some depth by listing this among their favorite TV shows. It’s a basic meme show, there is no cache left to it.

See R111, that clip sums up the reason I never got into that show. That wasn't even REMOTELY witty or funny. Just unbelievably lame.

Seasons 4 (and especially 5) of AD are bad. Really bad at times. But if you can't recognize the comedic brilliance in seasons 1-3, I feel sorry for you. It was probably one of the best written sitcoms of all time, and one of the funniest. Low brow humor, witty word play, smart dialog, biting social commentary - it had it all.
Jessica was a huge part of that. Lucille was a comedic creation for the ages.
This hit me hard. I can't remember the last time a celebrity death did that.

My “cool” aunt showed me Play Misty for Me when I was around 13–on Betamax! A few years later I saw The Group on late night TV. I still watch it every few years, and Jessica as Libby is my favorite. And of course, she was on Wonder Woman!

I feel sorry for the people who don't get a kick out of Arrested Development, and particularly Walter's Lucille Bluth. It's one of the best anti-depressants I know - watching a few episodes can snap me out of most any funk. The rare, perfect combination of genius writers and actors.

I never would have thought that Lucille II would outlive her.

People were going on and on about Archer & Arrested Development over on Facebook. I was the only one who mentioned "Play Misty For Me", R10. Those fucking uneducated dweebs!

I was the only one who mentioned "The Group".
It was adult and it was shocking.

I usually don’t get sad hearing about celebrities- but this one kind of hurt. Maybe because she was one of those great actresses who you knew could spend hours telling amazing stories and was someone who was real, not a fake or someone who expects you to fall down and worship them. They don’t make them like her anymore. I hope that they start showing all her old work, from Misty to Archer, just so we get to relive just how great she was. I hope wherever she is- she’s relaxing with a drink. She’s earned it.

[quote]R40 The nominees that year for the Academy Award for BA: Jane Fonda(Winner), Julie Christie, Glenda Jackson, Vanessa Redgrave, Janet Suzman
Walters should have taken Suzman’s slot. She barely does anything in that film, emotionally.

Lovely pic of her.

I seldom get teary eyed when celebrities die but this one....
Not only was she a great actress, and an especially talented comedic one, but she also seemed like she was just a great person.
Salud, Ms Walter!

Interesting statement, R165. I've attended a lot of funerals. As a kid, I always wanted to be one of the "special" people that got to be seated under the canopy at the graveside service...instead of standing within the crowd outside of it. Because that should be anyone's top concern in that situation. Yeah, I know. Anyway...
When my parents died (fourteen years apart), they were both cremated, and there was no graveside service for either. So, I wasn't able to indulge that. Maybe one day I WILL get to sit graveside, so I can feel like I'm the center of attention, and more important than everyone else.

My first introduction to Jessica Walter was on a show called Bare Essence when I was kid. She played a character named Ava. There was also a character on that show called "Muffin" and I loved the way Walter would enter a scene and say that name and give the character the cuntiest look. And that is how she became my forever fave.

Any details on her funeral?
Open or closed?

Libby is my favorite character in the book and movie. She’s just insufferable!

[quote]It's touching when people pass shortly after their spouses.
For some reason I didn't know Ron Leibman was married to her until he guested as a voice on "Archer," all those years I thought he was still married to Linda Lavin.
When he died at the end of 2019 I admit I did worry about how well Jessica would do afterwards.

I thought she was so beautiful and aged very well.
She was fantastic in Play Misty for Me, especially the scene where she’s in the taxi pleading with Clint.

Tony Gale tweets
[quote] She was a force, and her talent and timing were unmatched. Rest In Peace Mama Bluth.
Notice he doesn’t say she was warm, friendly, generous, fun, nice, beloved, gracious or anything like that.
“She was a force.”
Lol.
Reminds me of the “he was nothing like the characters he played” answer when people were asked to describe working with someone they didn’t like.
