I've loved her ever since she played the nasty Ava on the brief TV series of "Bare Essence" where her character would make an entrance and say in a phony way, "Kiss, kiss!" Also great as the society wife in "The Flamingo Kid". Along with Holland Taylor, she was always commanding every time she would make an entrance and take over the scene.

by Anonymousreply 14March 25, 2021 6:59 PM

That’s the way to go.

by Anonymousreply 15March 25, 2021 6:59 PM

This one stops me in my tracks, I haven't seen the most recent series of AD but she seemed relatively youthful and full of life.

by Anonymousreply 21March 25, 2021 7:08 PM

If I ever manage to give a disdainful look half as well as she did, I will consider my life's work complete. Interesting that she and George Segal died within such a short time period. They played married/previously married multiple times

No way! Oh man, she was the best thing about Arrested Development. I discovered her in her later years, I guess (AD, Archer). I was shocked she had co-starred in a cult classic with Clint Eastwood back in the day (Play Misty for Me).

She lost her husband Ron Leibman not very long ago. If there really is a God they're reunited in heaven sipping Manhattans together.

by Anonymousreply 28March 25, 2021 7:11 PM

Maybe I'll put it in her brownie.

by Anonymousreply 29March 25, 2021 7:11 PM

Can you believe she was only nominated for one Emmy for Arrested Development, and she lost to Doris Roberts?! That’s just wrong.

by Anonymousreply 30March 25, 2021 7:12 PM

At least she didn't die in 2020. Like we need more queens saying "Damn you 2020!"

by Anonymousreply 31March 25, 2021 7:12 PM

Huge fucking cunt. Everyone secretly loathed her. She was cordial in groups and horrendous in private. Burn in hell, Bitch!

by Anonymousreply 32March 25, 2021 7:14 PM

Jesus this really sucks.

Comedic genius.

by Anonymousreply 33March 25, 2021 7:14 PM

R32 I think you have her confused with Kaley Cuoco, whose various substance abuse problems and undiagnosed chlamydia brought out all her worst aspects.

by Anonymousreply 34March 25, 2021 7:16 PM

I still can't believe Doris Roberts won FOUR Emmys for that godawful show. Kim Cattrall and Walter created truly iconic TV characters but never won one because of that fat whore.

by Anonymousreply 35March 25, 2021 7:17 PM

Still mad at all the assholes in her cast (AD) for how they treated her.

I have JUST been enjoying the HELL out of Lucille Bluth, again, watching Arrested Development for the umpteenth time. She always stood out as the best character with the funniest lines played by the best actor of the entire cast. She was excellent, and will not be forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 80March 25, 2021 8:47 PM

She looked a little frail on the show with Mayonegg and Joan from Mad Men. It's a pretty good show, not a terrible final role.

by Anonymousreply 84March 25, 2021 9:10 PM

This was my favorite Lucille scene, it's short and this clip cuts it off even shorter. It should be 6 seconds instead of three. It's the only one I can find. In the show, once she is off screen, fallen to the floor, no one looks, they just keep on partying and it's too funny.

She was a professional for sure, but couldn't stand Arrested Development. SO overrated, overflowing with way too many quirks, and then there were those completely unlikeable characters. Including hers.

by Anonymousreply 88March 25, 2021 9:36 PM

[R88] 'Unlikeable' characters was kind of the whole point of the show. The clue is in the title.

80 is not "youngish." That's more or less the life expectancy.

by Anonymousreply 96March 25, 2021 10:00 PM

Clearly a lot of people did 'care about them' if you look at the comments in this thread. It was a very well beloved show that will be remembered long after your cookie-cutter likeable character comedies are forgotten.

I want to cry so bad, but I don't think I can spare the moisture.

by Anonymousreply 98March 25, 2021 10:09 PM

Arrested Development is like The Office, a cultural phenomenon that has a few stellar moments but is overall subpar; its popularity is perpetuated by dissociative millennial losers who like the eye-rolling, sarcastic humor.

by Anonymousreply 99March 25, 2021 10:14 PM

People like her die, and yet Trump continues to live.

Life is unfair.

by Anonymousreply 100March 25, 2021 10:21 PM

This one bothers me. Loved her and loved Arrested Development. And yes she was really good in “Play Misty For Me”. I think she did seem like a young 80. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 101March 25, 2021 10:25 PM

And I was just thinking about buying some bananas today. How much could one be? Ten dollars?

I had no idea she was married to Ron Liebman, who I adored as a young kid. He was so fantastic in Norma Rae, but in countless other performances, too. I'm sad for Jessica that she lost him at the end of 2019, but this happens so often when one partner dies. She was just not that interested in sticking around. Will truly miss her wit and presence.

by Anonymousreply 102March 25, 2021 10:32 PM

She was fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 103March 25, 2021 10:33 PM

r97: Of course it had a cult following, but "despite the positive response from critics, Arrested Development received low ratings and viewership on Fox, which canceled the series in 2006."

And this thread is about Jessica Walter, not one show she did about 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 107March 25, 2021 10:41 PM

Going in your sleep is the best way to go. Very peaceful. It's a shock to me. She seemed so young.

by Anonymousreply 108March 25, 2021 10:47 PM

[R107] They also later revived it, and it's currently #83 on IMDB Top Rated TV of all time, so yeah, it's well loved.. It was never a show that was going to appeal to the masses. Arrested Development is probably what Jessica Walter is best remembered for so it's normal to talk about it, particularly when one milquetoast 'my opinion is objective truth' poster slagged off the show. And no-one likes a Hall Monitor.

by Anonymousreply 122March 25, 2021 11:51 PM

Hilarious... the people on here who think that Arrested Development isn’t Basic Bitch Entertainment. It’s for people who shit on Friends, but thought Seinfeld was edgy. The same attitude as a bunch of anarchistic misanthropes who believe they’re better people for listening to Indie Rock or drinking coffee from independent coffeehouses. I’m sure they’re all boring, unoriginal people in real life who believe they can attach themselves to some depth by listing this among their favorite TV shows. It’s a basic meme show, there is no cache left to it.

by Anonymousreply 127March 26, 2021 12:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 128March 26, 2021 12:48 AM

"Sorry, I'm withholding. Look at me, getting off."

by Anonymousreply 129March 26, 2021 12:50 AM

r123 is the kind of pretentious twat who won't shut the fuck up about Sara Bareilles and how she's the greatest singer ever and so "musical." See R111, that clip sums up the reason I never got into that show. That wasn't even REMOTELY witty or funny. Just unbelievably lame.

Still, I'm sad she's gone. She was very talented and deserves praise for her long career, which most here are completely ignoring.

by Anonymousreply 134March 26, 2021 1:25 AM

Seasons 4 (and especially 5) of AD are bad. Really bad at times. But if you can't recognize the comedic brilliance in seasons 1-3, I feel sorry for you. It was probably one of the best written sitcoms of all time, and one of the funniest. Low brow humor, witty word play, smart dialog, biting social commentary - it had it all.

Jessica was a huge part of that. Lucille was a comedic creation for the ages.

This hit me hard. I can't remember the last time a celebrity death did that.

by Anonymousreply 135March 26, 2021 1:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 155March 26, 2021 3:59 AM

Me too R155. I'm oddly sad about her death. Someone on Twitter said, "I doubt that she knew just how much she was loved." Because she was always so good and had been around for so long.

by Anonymousreply 156March 26, 2021 4:11 AM

RIP

She died as we should all hope to: legendary, beloved, and in peace.

by Anonymousreply 157March 26, 2021 4:15 AM

r40 there might have been category confusion. She's kind of a Supporting Actress in the film but the Globes put her in lead. May have split the vote. She deserved it over though over everyone except Fonda.

(and Fatal Attraction "borrowed" a lot from that film.)

by Anonymousreply 158March 26, 2021 4:17 AM

Like the Supreme's Mary Wilson, Jessica was so vivacious that you forget they were old. That's what makes their deaths so shocking 'cause it seems like they'll be around for longer.

by Anonymousreply 159March 26, 2021 4:21 AM

My “cool” aunt showed me Play Misty for Me when I was around 13–on Betamax! A few years later I saw The Group on late night TV. I still watch it every few years, and Jessica as Libby is my favorite. And of course, she was on Wonder Woman!

by Anonymousreply 160March 26, 2021 4:23 AM

I feel sorry for the people who don't get a kick out of Arrested Development, and particularly Walter's Lucille Bluth. It's one of the best anti-depressants I know - watching a few episodes can snap me out of most any funk. The rare, perfect combination of genius writers and actors.

by Anonymousreply 161March 26, 2021 4:28 AM

I never would have thought that Lucille II would outlive her.

by Anonymousreply 162March 26, 2021 4:36 AM

People were going on and on about Archer & Arrested Development over on Facebook. I was the only one who mentioned "Play Misty For Me", R10. Those fucking uneducated dweebs!

by Anonymousreply 163March 26, 2021 4:42 AM

I was the only one who mentioned "The Group".

It was adult and it was shocking.

by Anonymousreply 167March 26, 2021 5:37 AM

I usually don’t get sad hearing about celebrities- but this one kind of hurt. Maybe because she was one of those great actresses who you knew could spend hours telling amazing stories and was someone who was real, not a fake or someone who expects you to fall down and worship them. They don’t make them like her anymore. I hope that they start showing all her old work, from Misty to Archer, just so we get to relive just how great she was. I hope wherever she is- she’s relaxing with a drink. She’s earned it.

by Anonymousreply 168March 26, 2021 5:44 AM

[quote]R40 The nominees that year for the Academy Award for BA: Jane Fonda(Winner), Julie Christie, Glenda Jackson, Vanessa Redgrave, Janet Suzman

Walters should have taken Suzman’s slot. She barely does anything in that film, emotionally.

I seldom get teary eyed when celebrities die but this one....

Not only was she a great actress, and an especially talented comedic one, but she also seemed like she was just a great person.

Salud, Ms Walter!

by Anonymousreply 173March 26, 2021 8:34 AM

She’ll always be Malory Archer to me!

by Anonymousreply 175March 26, 2021 9:02 AM

Interesting statement, R165. I've attended a lot of funerals. As a kid, I always wanted to be one of the "special" people that got to be seated under the canopy at the graveside service...instead of standing within the crowd outside of it. Because that should be anyone's top concern in that situation. Yeah, I know. Anyway...

When my parents died (fourteen years apart), they were both cremated, and there was no graveside service for either. So, I wasn't able to indulge that. Maybe one day I WILL get to sit graveside, so I can feel like I'm the center of attention, and more important than everyone else.

Just been having AD playing in the background off and on over the last day.

by Anonymousreply 177March 26, 2021 1:09 PM

My first introduction to Jessica Walter was on a show called Bare Essence when I was kid. She played a character named Ava. There was also a character on that show called "Muffin" and I loved the way Walter would enter a scene and say that name and give the character the cuntiest look. And that is how she became my forever fave.

Bye, Libby.

Open or closed?

Libby is my favorite character in the book and movie. She’s just insufferable!

[quote]It's touching when people pass shortly after their spouses.

For some reason I didn't know Ron Leibman was married to her until he guested as a voice on "Archer," all those years I thought he was still married to Linda Lavin.

When he died at the end of 2019 I admit I did worry about how well Jessica would do afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 182March 26, 2021 2:57 PM

I thought she was so beautiful and aged very well.

She was fantastic in Play Misty for Me, especially the scene where she’s in the taxi pleading with Clint.

Tony Gale tweets

[quote] She was a force, and her talent and timing were unmatched. Rest In Peace Mama Bluth.

Notice he doesn’t say she was warm, friendly, generous, fun, nice, beloved, gracious or anything like that.

“She was a force.”

Lol.

Reminds me of the “he was nothing like the characters he played” answer when people were asked to describe working with someone they didn’t like.
