I realize they were “company cars” but couldn’t Charles Townsend afford to update/upgrade the Angel’s fleet by this time? I would have been embarrassed to be seen in a 1976 orange Ford Pinto in 1980. Hey, look at the wall graffiti in the pic. It says “marital aids”!
Why did Tiffany have to drive the orange Pinto?

A couple of years later Sammy Jo Carrington owned that orange Pinto.

This drives me nuts about Charlie’s Angels. It’s not that these cars are older by season 4; they’re also raggedy looking.
There’s an episode where you can see the driver’s seat in Kelly’s car is held together by electrical tape. The Cobra looks grimy and has a broken front spoiler. And in the last episode of the series, Julie pulls up in the Pinto and it’s missing moldings and trim on the side of the car.
It’s bad enough they’re driving Pintos and Mustang IIs, which were not the cars stylish women in Los Angeles drove in the late 70s, but they’re junk by season 4.
The show just looks cheaper in seasons 4 and 5.
Bosley got a new car (the station wagon) late in season 4; these three should have received new cars as well.

I'm sure Ford would have willing to have more up to date models in the last 2 seasons as it was advertising, but I suspect Spelling was too cheap to re-film the establishment shots of the Townsend agency office with the new models parked in front. Bosley's car was never shown in those shots, hence he got new models.

I knew lot of girls like that. Every dime went into hair, make-up and clothing. They always drove junkers. I agree with R8 though, they didn't"t feel like re-filming the establishing shots (Or putting money into the stunt women's wigs apparently). Of course now at antique car parades, the Pintos and the Pacers get the applause.

I think part of the reason they kept the orange Pinto was because the Kate Jackson replacement was originally intended to be Sada Thompson who had just finished up her tenure on Family. Apparently TPTB thought that having a woman who was not in the 'traditional' age bracket would appeal to a broader audience and also they were potentially considering a romance between new Angel, Lorraine (Thompson's character) and David Doyle's Bosley. An orange Pinto is completely appropriate for Angel Lorraine, but not so much for Tiffany. I do know that they shot quite a bit of footage of Thompson before she backed out/TPTB changed their minds about taking this particular direction with the show.. I know Thompson mentioned she was not comfortable in her costume (blue jeans, a twin set and heels) or running around as much as she did.

The real question should be, why did Sabrina have to drive a Pinto? She was supposed to be the smart one? Wouild't a Ford Granada been more suitable for her? Was she given the Pinto because the car had good fuel economy for a Ford and being conscious of the energy crisis and taking steps to conserve was seen as a sign of being a "smart one"?

by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 26, 2021 10:32 PM |
The white Cobra was tacky, the beige Mustang was boring. But the orange Pinto was iconic and cool. Of all these cars the Pinto was featured the most and in the best scenes on the show (during season 1 to 3 of course). It was also in the most famous episode of Charlie's Angels "Angels in Chains". Of course it had to be iconic Sabrina Duncan's car! Tiffany was too waspy for that car AND the job.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 27, 2021 11:54 AM |
Sabrina used to take a morning dump in the Pinto.

The Mustang thing is weirder, since they introduced a new version for 1979. It must boil down to Aaron and Doug being too cheap to re-do establishing shots.
The Pinto, aside from the fire issue, was reasonably cute design for its time. The Escort might have been a snappy replacement for the Pinto for Julie, but was introduced too late for Our Tiff.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 27, 2021 1:18 PM |
As I recall in her first episode Julie drove a Lincoln. Of course this was before she was hired by the Townsend agency so she was living large from all the jobs she got after graduating from a top school for models. Then when hired, and after getting back from Hawaii (where thankfully the Mustangs and Pinto weren't shipped to) she no longer had her Lincoln but the Pinto.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 27, 2021 1:27 PM |
I thought they should have changed the cars out at the end of “Love Boat Angels,” or “Angels Go Truckin’,” which are Tiffany’s first episodes. At the end of one of those episodes they could have had Bosley hand each Angel a set of car keys and have Charlie say this was for a job well done.
Give Bosley the station wagon, Kelly a 1980 Ford Thunderbird, Kris a new Mustang, and Tiffany a Fairmont Futura.
In the Farrah returns episodes in season 4 the crappiness of their cars is really evident, since Jill gets to drive better cars; the scene where Cheryl Ladd tries to keep up with Porsche driving Timothy Dalton and Farrah Fawcett in the Cobra is ridiculous.
They blow up Kelly’s Mustang a second time in season 4, and she’s still driving the same car in future episodes. They send the Pinto careening down a side of a Jill with Kelly and Tiffany inside, and she’s seen driving the same car in future episodes.
In Tiffany’s final episodes (where Kris and Kelly fight over Patrick Duffy), the plot is set in San Diego. For some reason, Tiffany rented a car in San Diego -it’s the Pinto, repainted a nasty peach color with cheap, weird, blue material (I wouldn’t call it seat covers ) draped over the seats. It’s very evident it’s the Orange Pinto underneath that peach paint.
This is obsessive , I know, but I love Charlie’s Angels and I love cars and I’ve never seen this happen in a TV show-characters driving junky cars, and that isn’t a plot point or a character quirk. It just so weird since they’re supposed to be glamorous, and they have very expensive mobile phones in these cars still.
Someone pointed out that Sammy Jo seems to drive the Pinto in an early season of Dynasty. When Steven is briefly racing cars in the early seasons of Dynasty, his race car is... The Cobra. Aaron Spelling must have been cheap and weird about cars. I wonder if they made Tori drive the Pinto too.

R32 Yeah, a fun fact. I wonder what Aaron Spelling had to say about it. Louisiana also looks a whole lot like Southern California so... In any case the episode was freaking awesome and so was the iconic Pinto!

by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 27, 2021 8:47 PM |
The reason they had the girls drive the same cars year after year is so they wouldn’t have to reshoot exterior or wide shots. For instance the exterior shots outside the office where the girls cars were parked would have to be reshot with new cars and any stunt shots would also need to redone. It was cheaper to keep them in the same cars year after year.

Tiffany finally got a chance to drive a different car and her expense account from Charlie was so stingy she had no other choice than to rent another Pinto. Unless Tiffany was the frugal type. Maybe as she was quite WASPY and classy.
Nevertheless based on her experiences in her year working for the Townsend agency it's no wonder she headed back East. Besides having to deal with two colleagues fighting over a no good man they were both fucking and having to solve that case on her own, and the crappy Pinto, she also had to bust all on her own a white slavery ring and rescue herself from said ring, having her colleague's older sister pretty much snub and ignore her when visiting town, be left to float down a river with no attempt of rescue after losing a hand to hand combat fight with someone hunting her and her colleagues, and in general being treated with at best with half hearted attempts of friendship by Kelly and Kris. I hope Tiffany Welles found a happier life for herself back east with a better set of wheels to get around.

The worst Tiffany episode for me is the one where she goes undercover with Kelly as hookers to find out why their mousy client is getting the crap beaten out of her (spoiler alert, she’s a whore too with DID, although anyone who watched Niki Smith on One Life to Live could see that plot twist coming).
Shelley’s street walker gait and mannerisms are ridiculous, she looks like she’s acting in a Junior League theater production of Hookers At The Point, while Jaclyn looks like Jackie Kennedy in heat seeking stretch pants. These two make no effort to blend in, spending most of their time hanging out with Bosley and Kris and trying to make the evil pimp think they’re real dirty high class whores.
Runner up-Kris goes to jail and is menaced by Divine’s stunt double, Big Aggie, and Vivian Alamain. Tiffany and Kelly go undercover as nuns. “HI! I’m Sister Tiffany,” says Shelly in a nuns habit and aviator sunglasses.

Big Aggie episode... SO MUCH TO LOVE AND GUSH ON. Big Aggie calls Kris "Chicken". She visits her cell at night and steals her make-up and it is implied her lesbian virginity. Chicken starts to shake and tremble under the pressure of Big Aggie. Lonnie (Sally Kirkland) is a tough assed lesbian with a streak of loyalty deep deep deep down inside of her. Big Aggie accuses Kris of trying to steal crazy Lonnie's make-up (god I can't imagine how shitty her pressed powder compact must have been in prison). Lonnie tries to go after Kris to beat the shit out of her but Kris out-wits her and manages to get her into the "prison swimming pool". Who knew women's prisons had pools??? Then Kris saves her life and now Lonnie is loyal to Kris's pussy for life!!!!

With all due respect R73, me dressing up in a nun's habit and aviator glasses to show how smart, chic and stylish I am was the highlight of the episode, not Kris, or Big Aggie, or Lonnie. I was the highlight. Me, Tiffany Welles.

I've been thinking about it (way too much) and think things would have been better if they'd gone with Chevrolet instead of Ford. Jill/Kris in a Corvette, Kelly in a Camaro, Bosley in a Caprice, and Sabrina/Tiffany/Julie in a Monza (hey, better that than a Chevette).
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 3, 2021 12:37 AM |
It’s odd that Ford wouldn’t have wanted to approach the producers in seasons 3 or 4 and offer to update the cars for free.
The show was still highly rated and Ford had redesigned the Mustang , Thunderbird and several other cars in their product line in 1979/80; you’d think they’d want to get those old cars off the show and showcase their new product.
Especially since the Angels were so identified with their cars in the early seasons.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 3, 2021 1:10 AM |
It’s one thing to write someone off a show. It’s another thing entirely to put them in a Ford Pinto with their tendency to explode during even minor rear end collisions!
