Watching the whole thing for the first time in a few years. Nothing will convince me that Alex Pettyfer didn’t fuck someone to get his role. A complete charisma vacuum, an absolute black hole of onscreen presence. If they had gotten someone with natural charm it might be remembered as a decent buddy movie but alas... it’s now regarded as more or less a male exploitation film, despite some good observations of late-stage capitalism bleakness and Soderbergh perfectly capturing the ratty Florida atmosphere.
He’s so gorgeous though.
I can see him being a total bore, though. (I haven’t seen the movie.) Beautiful people don’t need to develop interesting personalities, so they tend not to.

GAP Playlist guy was casting and Alex had the goods!

Alex was the least attractive out of the bunch. And boring too.

Hes very cute in a boy next door way,but honey,in Miami hes a 4 . There are some stunning motherfuckers in Miami. From all over the world.

I don't remember him being that awful. None of the performances had charm. Which was quite an achievement because back then, Tatum, Manganiello, and McConaughey still had charm to spare.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 21, 2021 2:03 AM |
I thought Channing was charismatic as hell in this, his charisma keeps the movie afloat. And McConaughey IMO should have gotten the Supporting Actor nom for this and he may have even won (Christoph Waltz won his second Supporting that year in the worst case of category fraud in Oscar history). And that would have spared us the McConaughey Best Actor win the following year which should have gone to the more deserving Chiwetel Ejiofer.

Channing and Alex did not get along.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 21, 2021 2:14 AM |
Alex Pettyfer has a lot of nerve referencing Magic Mike. He made filming pure hell, despite working with one of the top director in the world, and one of the hottest actors at the time. He was given a tenth chance after bomb after bomb after bomb, and he blew it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 21, 2021 2:20 AM |
I agree about Pettyfer. The film works because of Tatum, McConaughey, and the music/cinematography. Pettyfer and equal black hole of suck Cody Horn really did their best to ruin the film.

I wonder why they didn’t get Zac Efron in the Kid role, he would have been perfect and loves to show off his body.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 21, 2021 2:37 AM |
Is Zac Efron over 5ft tall?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 21, 2021 2:38 AM |
I forgot he was even in that movie and even in the most important role. It's really McBongo and Tatum's movie. (Whatever happened to Channing Tatum?)
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 21, 2021 2:40 AM |
He was on deadline recently because he signed a first look deal with MGM... and I was like Who the fuck signs a first-look deal with MGM?
He’s also starring as nearly 60-year old Sandra Bullock’s live interest in a new comedy at Paramount, which is still trying to make midbudget films (isn’t that precious?)

Absolutely terrible movie that somehow made naked male strippers boring.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 21, 2021 2:50 AM |
It had surprisingly little nudity for a move about male strippers.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 21, 2021 3:02 AM |
I remember he was very hot and the sequel was very boring without him. That woman who played his sister and Channing Tatum love interest was the most awkward and boring character I ever seen.

prettier than much
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 21, 2021 3:28 AM |
He's a complete enigma to me. He's mildly attractive, but has no charisma or star quality and yet he's gotten so many chances to prove everyone wrong and he strikes out every time. Just let him go, Hollywood. I don't think he has a memorable performance in him.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 21, 2021 3:39 AM |
They should put him in a film with Armie Hammer just so we can make a direct comparison about who sucks more.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 21, 2021 3:41 AM |
Pettyfer sounds an angry young man, despite the fact that every advantage has been offered him. Magic Mike should of been a breakout film for him, making him a household name, but instead it launched him into oblivion.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 21, 2021 9:15 AM |
Pettyfer is so overrated looks and talent. Glad his career never went anywhere after the hype back then
Now Adam Rodriguez is sexy as hell and so charismatic.

Um...a good-looking white dude in a movie about male strippers was only cast because he fucked someone to get the role?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 21, 2021 10:18 AM |
I am so turned on by his whole “white trash, pickup truck driving, straight, but gay-for-pay vibe.” He was my favorite actor in that whole movie, partly because he is the kind of guy that is attainable in real life. Had a couple like him when visiting Florida. Super easy (and affordable) to take advantage of. (Or he may have been the one taking advantage! Lol)
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 21, 2021 10:29 AM |
I didn’t even buy Pettyfer as Florida trash. The character is supposed to be from Citrus Springs near Ocala which is Florida trash central.
I saw a photo of Joe Alwyn recently and I thought, “That’s Florida trash.”

There’s a reason you have never done a sequel before, pal.

Pettyfer had a terrible reputation before MM and I remember one daily (want to say Deadline) actually expressed shock that he was cast. So yes, I think he auditioned with his ankles in the air.

Once again I am amazed by DLers ability to recall a movie from a decade ago (let alone sitcoms from 45 years ago) with such alacrity.
I saw the movie twice, thought it was entertaining but largely forgettable and if you asked me what it was about all I could tell you is "Channing Tatum and the other male strippers don't really want to be strippers and Tatum somehow figures out there's more to life and grows up."
Or something like that.

R24 come back! You need to share more lies! Still thanks for the laugh
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 21, 2021 12:12 PM |
It's a movie about strippers written by and starring strippers. Why would it be surprising someone would be cast for whoring?
I couldn't sit through the whole movie. I thought it was unwatchably uninteresting, including the annoying direction.

Cut out the booze and the weed, R28. Your memory will improve.

It was absolutely terrible, but one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. Too bad it wasn’t intended as a comedy. I still maintain it is McConaghuey’s best work.

[quote] I really loved Cody Horn in Magic Mike. I know it’s tonally different. It’s not like a serious drama… but I don’t know, I loved her performance. It’s funny, I called my best friend in England, I was like, ‘Have you seen that?’ and she was blown away. She wasn’t acting,. She was real. She was totally real.

[quote]McConaghuey’s best work.
Wasn't he a bit long in the tooth to be a stripper?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 21, 2021 4:11 PM |
A lot of people hate Cody Horn in the role but I honestly believe Soderbergh gave her the role because she is very mannish. There is a parallel narrative in the film, and both Tatum’s love interests are played by women who look mannish (Horn) or act mannish (Olivia Munn who is fantastic as a kind of predatory bisexual/lesbian). On the other end of the spectrum are the traditionally feminine women who are depicted as the screaming morons at the club, the dumb sorority girls or the ditzy wife of Ken. It’s a peculiar polarity in which women are either like the gullible college girls which Pettyfer picks up at the beginning of the movie, or mannish survivors like Horn and Munns’ characters. On the other end of the spectrum, the men, while overtly straight, are modern corporate wimps like Horn’s s dinner date, or the simultaneously hypermasculine yet effemized and pseudo-gay strippers. I personally think Soderbergh is tying the breakdown of economic promise in the country to the evolution of gender roles and sexuality.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 21, 2021 4:48 PM |
There's a scene where Pettyfer and Riley Keough are having drug-fueled sex and Pettyfer's body is photographed very... um... lovingly by Soderbergh.
So, that might answer that question.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 22, 2021 9:56 AM |
They are both incredibly boring films with not anywhere near enough hot male nudity to make up for it.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 22, 2021 10:09 AM |
There’s a throwaway line about Pettyfer’s character having a football scholarship and Pettyfer actually got huge to play an ex-football jock but then he was told by Soderbergh to slim down.
So take that for what you will.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 22, 2021 10:17 AM |
I don’t think I made it through the 1st one, I just remember being bored and annoyed by how inert it was. I tried the 2nd one because Indiewire gave it such high marks but less than 15 mins. in it felt like a waste of time. And I’m no stranger to long running times, I’ve watched and enjoyed a number of Wiseman docs, all of which were 3 hours plus. But these MM films are not for me.
