Anyone Remembers Sharon Redd?

Came across her bio on the AIDS Memorial page and discovered a few of her tunes, which I surprisingly liked (In the Name of Love is my favorite). Great voice and singer, in my opinion.

She was a former backup for Bette Midler and found minor success on the dance charts in the early 80s. Was on her way to a comeback before she died in the early 90s of AIDS. Anyone interacted with her? Wondering how she contracted the virus: as she into drugs or did she get involved with a bi guy? Can't find much about her online.

Why surprisingly? I only know her first album, "Sharon Redd," but it doesn't have a weak track.

Her sister is Pennye Ford.

R1 I meant surprisingly in that she is virtually an unknown today (no major success, don't hear her on the radio) but a good handful of her tunes were catchy and had commercial appeal in my opinion.

In North America, there was a bit of hetero AIDS transmission, too, dumb dumb.

I have most of her 12" singles and still enjoy them. My only criticism: Her singing is occasionally off. "Beat the Street" is a good example.

Haven't really listened to that one yet r5

Another example of "off" singing in parts is "Never Give You Up".

Sheryl Lee Ralph made a panel on the AIDS Memorial Quilt for her friend Sharon.

[Quote] I never knew a time when I did not know of somebody who had become infected — when people said that women don't get infected, I always knew that Sharon Redd was infected. I knew that.

If only you knew how to construct a sentence, Deena.

Ralph did Dreamgirls in the early part of the 1980s, right? I wonder if she's misremembering. Redd didn't die until 1992. Then again, I think Edmund White was diagnosed in 1985 and he's still here.

Nice to see that Holly Johnson, of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, is a fan:

[Quote] My favourite Disco Diva , except she was a total sweetheart that gave so much in her live performances ✨🖤✨

Edmund White didn't get AIDS because he was one of the rare "non-progressors" due to a gene. He was part of studies for years. Many of these non-progressors did not begin taking antivirals until they were vastly improved 1 pill affairs.

Just STFU, R9

"Try My Love on for Size" should have been a single.

"In the Name of Love" is my favorite disco song from the era.

I came out later in my life and the first time friends took me to The Saint, "In the Name of Love" was playing. My favorite song was blasting, I looked up in wonder at the stars, then was swallowed up by all the men dancing joyously, and thought it was a dream.

Thank you Dennis and Ron. I will remember you both and that night forever.

Did they ask the DJ to play it for you?

by Anonymousreply 16March 20, 2021 8:54 PM

I adore "In the Name of Love," especially the Disconet remix.

R16

You know, I have no idea! It's something they might have done. They took me under their wings and opened up an entire gay world to me.

I still have the dildo they made me buy because they insisted I had to start somewhere. That was 40 years ago.

Sadly, I can't ask them about "In the Name of Love" that night.

YES! DNA & Sharon Redd's "Can You Handle It?" is my second-favorite song on the September 1993 Gap In-Store Playlist!

I love the House sound much more than her original version.

You can tell in the video that she is sick.

Love Sharon Redd! "Can You Handle It?" was (and when I get my lard-ass back to cardio will once again be) my jam!
