Crash 1996

What are your thoughts on this film? It seemed cheesy at the time but now I kind of view it as a forgotten masterpiece. Such a weird movie and James Spader is so hot in it.

Talk about weird timing, I was just looking up JG Ballard to remember what a book of his short stories was called (Vermillion Sands) and I went down the crash rabbit hole. Can't remember the film at all, I am too young. I know I always get it confused with Sex Lies and Videotape.

I kept waiting for something to happen. Nothing ever did. Boring as hell.

Watched it recently, and it's much better than I remember back at the time (I saw it in France, months after it was out there, and people still got up and walked out of the theatre midway through the movie, despite presumably already knowing what it would be about).

We are much more cognizant of kink and trauma now than then, and the movie is ahead of the curve that way. Not all of the acting is as fearless as it ought to be (looking at you, Holly Hunter), but it's worth a reconsideration.

I would have been way happier if this is the Crash the won the best movie Oscar over the one that did.

by Anonymousreply 4March 20, 2021 4:52 AM

Is the novel worth checking out?

by Anonymousreply 5March 20, 2021 4:56 AM

I used to joke about that at the time R4 - at least this one was less cliche. Plus, Cronenberg has made some other great weird stuff like Naked Lunch, ExistenZ, and Dead Ringers.

Plus it inspired Norwegian pop auteur's American Cars.

In one scene inside a car, wasn't Spader supposedly jerking off Elias Koteas? Or they were watching each other masturbate? I forgot.

Like most people into odd fetishes, the movie was boring and creepy. It was the usual Cronenberg fare, a very cold and weird film, filled with characters few would care about.

For fans of Roseanne Arquette's huge tits, they are on display throughout.

It’s been years but isn’t there a sex scene where straight James Spader fucks straight Elias Koteas in the backseat of a car, right after witnessing a car crash? I looked on YouTube and didn’t find anything.

R7 - jinx, we both posted at the exact same time. I clearly remember it was fucking. But it was years ago, so my memories are a bit at a loss

by Anonymousreply 9March 20, 2021 5:31 AM

WHET to DL's Elias Koteas troll?

by Anonymousreply 10March 20, 2021 5:31 AM

This is the REAL Crash. Sex body horror gore car culturebodily fluids ands and discharges of all descriptions--it wasn't quite as creepy and boner-inducing as Dead Ringers but it said something very unique about the obsessive psychopathology of Western culture--oh bollocks. It was a film that made me want to shoot heroin and fuck someone in the back seatof a speeding car while the driver watched us in the rear-view. If that ain't transgressive and absolutely subversive I don't know how to load a Bolex in an airport lounge.

My wife even got kinda rapey with me and talked about the movie and the sex for weeks. extra bonus points. I love being sexy culture hero from underground!

I saw a double feature of this with Lost Highway in 1997, much preferred the latter. And I remember my car overheated on the way back to my apartment (but I didn’t crash).

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2021 7:12 AM

It's the one Cronenberg movie I really liked. I liked "Lost Highway" too -- good double bill.

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2021 7:23 AM

Whatever happened to Deborah Kara Unger? She was the go-to blonde for middle-budget art films needing an actress who would show muff.

by Anonymousreply 15March 20, 2021 7:42 AM

It was better than that piece of shit that beat 'Brokeback Mountain' for best picture.

by Anonymousreply 16March 20, 2021 7:59 AM

I’m watching this again tonight.

by Anonymousreply 17March 28, 2021 1:32 AM

HATED IT

by Anonymousreply 18March 28, 2021 1:33 AM

I remember thinking at the time: it’s worst sin is being boring.

Bitch what?

by Anonymousreply 20March 28, 2021 3:37 AM

*its. I’m so mortified

by Anonymousreply 21March 28, 2021 3:40 AM

The gay sex is a deleted scene

by Anonymousreply 22March 28, 2021 3:43 AM

I was disappointed that it beat out Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture but when I saw it, I realized it was the Best Picture.

by Anonymousreply 23March 28, 2021 3:44 AM

R23 is slow

by Anonymousreply 24March 28, 2021 3:46 AM

I can’t find it anywhere to watch. Any help?
