Didn’t Oprah do a show on lesbian nuns?

This is no lie- I was 10 in 1963, fourth grade, Catholic school. Our teacher was a young nun, still in the habit. She would be visited by another young nun and they would go to the back of the room; she would state very sternly that we were to face front and not to turn our heads. I wonder.

I read the title as "Lebanese Nuns".

In my high school, my Junior English teacher and one of the guidance counselors were nuns together in an order. They left at the same time and lived together for the rest of their lives.

Reading all the real life stories about lesbian nins, it seems like the percentage of lesbians among nuns is as high as the percentage of pedophiles among priests.

Danny Thomas was a nun?!?

I went to Catholic school, so of course we knew some of the nuns were lesbians. My sixth grade teacher, Sister Patricia (she insisted we call her Sister Pat) was a butch nun. She was very nice and good to most of us. She used to play kicker and other sports with the boys. My father went to school with her when they were young and remembered her as a tomboy. Ha! That's old school code for lesbian.

There were a couple others who were known to be a couple. Everyone seemed to know but no one did or said anything. I guess it's just like the silence around the pedophile priests. We had gay priests, too. We'd sometimes have visiting priests. One of them formed a "strong friendship" with one of the priests at our school who was clearly gay. They used to go on "retreats" together. Uh huh. At least they were into other adults unlike some of the pedo priests we had.

I'm pretty sure that my partner's aunt, a nun, is a lesbian. She joined her order in her mid 20s and never had a boyfriend, in spite of the fact that she's always been outgoing and well-liked. She's only 5 feet tall, lean and wiry, and tough as nails. When she was in her early 20s, a bunch of her friends had gotten together at somebody's home, and one of them had brought along two pairs of boxing gloves. Of course Aunt wanted to try them out, and immediately knocked out the guy she was sparring with. In spite of her tiny stature, she's as strong as a horse.

The stories about her are legendary. She's outgoing, scared of absolutely nothing, and there is nothing feminine about her. Personally, I think she has untreated ADHD. She can't sit still and has trouble concentrating. All these things, of course, are not indicative of her being a lesbian, but it's a feeling I've always had since I met her. She works in the field of social justice, which is a big cause of hers.

I went to a convent school in south London in the mid-1970s. It was a tough, cruel place for a young mixed-race girl and most of the nuns were harsh, narrow-minded and prejudiced. Only Sister Carmel was kind to me and took an interest. I only found out a few years ago that she had left the convent in the late-1980s to live life openly as a gay woman. Looking back I think she knew I was a lesbian although I wasn't aware of it myself at the time. I still remember her fondly.

I had one in 7th grade. She was so good to me and ended up almost beating up my bully. She was reprimanded for jacking him up against the lockers. 3 years later she left the nun-hood. I will always be grateful to her.
