Since several of the supporting cast were actually nomads "playing themselves," if one of them had been deemed Oscar-worthy for their supporting role, would they have been eligible? I'm thinking particularly of the lady named Linda May, who was literally playing a version of herself. How would that work?
Yes, "civilians" can be nominated, but campaigning for a nomination is a very expensive and lengthy process that requires representation, which is likely why it doesn't happen often. I'm coming up totally blank on an example.

Forgot to add, once you are nominated, campaigning for the actual win is insanely expensive and time consuming. I hate the whole process. It is so corrupt.

Thanks, R1. That makes perfect sense.

At least 50% of actors nominated for Oscars in the past have been "playing a version of themselves", OP, despite their pretences. Where would you draw the line?

R4 Where did you pull that number from?

Also, I wonder if this Linda May has a SAG card (or got one from appearing in the movie), and if that would affect her being nominated. One could take the question further and ask what would happen if Giuliani got nominated for appearing in the 'Borat' sequel. (It would've never happened, but what if it did?)

She's still reading a script OP or at least improvising off of one. It's not a documentary.

Why the hell should anyone "campaign" for an award? The performance is either the best or it's not.

I agree r8
SAG cards have eligibility requirements that aren't too hard if you are motivated enough. Then there is the 3k one time fee, and the...I can't remember right now I want to say 300 per year...dues.

With so many films and actors, how else would they get attention if not by campaigning? At the very least there has to be a push from their team or the studio but it's up to the actor how far they want to go. Monique managed to win without personally campaigning but the studio pushed for her.

because it's as corrupt as everything else

Jesus, my fucking mind is fried. Once again I forgot to mention...You don't need a SAG card to be nominated and not having one doesn't mess with your chances. It's the fucking money that it takes for all of the ridiculous campaigning you have to do these days that messes with your chances. We aren't talking a few thousand. It can easily hit the millions for bigger names/films
Like I said earlier, it is so corrupt now. I think all of the joy was sucked out of it long ago.

I think there was a military veteran, an amputee who played a version of himself in a war film, Harold Russell for a film called “The Best Years of Our Lives”. I may be misremembering that, though.

You're right R13.

Yes. They can be nominated. There were a few actress names looking for a nom on the back of the screener. Also for the michael dude (the almost romance guy)

Into the Wild was a million times better than this shit.

OP, we're in a time in history where the only people who are supposed to play any parts are people who have lived/are living the experience. Writers, too. It is deeply offensive to the Nomadic community to imply that an "actor" can simply embody who they are, can just put on that identity on a lark. Only a person who has lived it can express it. Anyone pretending to be homeless for the sake of an acting job is committing an act of violence against actual homeless people. It's Frances MacDormand who doesn't deserve her nomination, she's a person with money who knows nothing of the life she portrayed. She goes home to a fancy house with her money and awards while the real people living in RVs are trapped there. Disgusting and offensive, or so I'm told.
