Fucking Borat? That vulgar, lowbrow trash shouldn't even be considered for nomination much less actually chosen.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 15, 2021 1:06 PM |
Surprised Glenn was nominated, delighted for Amanda. Guess it wasn't Michelle Pfeiffer's year to make an Oscar comeback.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 15, 2021 1:07 PM |
The Andra Day nomination is a joke.
I saw Sound of Metal a few days ago and I didn't think it was that great.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 15, 2021 1:09 PM |
With her fourth nomination, Viola Davis has broken the record for the most number of overall acting nominations for a Black actress in Hollywood history — and became the only Black woman with two Best Actress nominations.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 15, 2021 1:10 PM |
Glenn Cole was nominated for a Razzie and a Oscar for the same performance.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 15, 2021 1:11 PM |
Should make for an exciting show, lol.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 15, 2021 1:13 PM |
The Golden Globe win for Andra Day really helped catapult her in the Oscar voting.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 15, 2021 1:13 PM |
I love Glenn but after all of the great performances she’s given and been nominated for I really hope she doesn’t get the award for this piece of crap. I really loved Olivia in The Father.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 15, 2021 1:14 PM |
Glenn Close and Diane Warren - forever bridesmaids
Thrilled the Eurovision song got nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 15, 2021 1:14 PM |
Steven Yeun becomes the first Asian to be nominated for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 15, 2021 1:14 PM |
R13 Well, why didn't that work for me? I'm going to be bitching out Netflix right now.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 15, 2021 1:16 PM |
Congratulations, O
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 15, 2021 1:17 PM |
This is Glenn's 8th nomination. If she loses she will tie with Peter O'Toole for having the most Oscar nominations without a win.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 15, 2021 1:17 PM |
I think the only other performance nominated for both an Oscar and Razzie is Amy Irving in Yentl.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 15, 2021 1:17 PM |
Out of all these movies, the only one I saw was Tenet.
I'd heard of 3 others, but I must be otherwise completely disconnected from popular culture.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 15, 2021 1:19 PM |
r18 Jesus, enough already
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 15, 2021 1:20 PM |
[quote]Steven Yeun becomes the first Asian to be nominated for Best Actor.
Technically Riz Ahmed becomes the first Asian to be nominated for Best Actor, seeing as his name was read out first.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 15, 2021 1:21 PM |
Ummmm... bitches?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 15, 2021 1:21 PM |
The Oscars aren't really about popular culture r21, it's supposed to be about the best films, not the most popular ones.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 15, 2021 1:21 PM |
[quote]Glenn Cole was nominated for a Razzie and a Oscar for the same performance.
The twilight of her career just goes from strength to strength, doesn't it?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 15, 2021 1:22 PM |
Steven Yuen is the first ASIAN AMERICAN actor nominated for Best Actor.
Ben Kingsley and Riz Ahmed are both Anglo-Asian.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 15, 2021 1:25 PM |
Ben Kingsley and Riz Ahmed are English, so Stephen Yeun is being touted as the first Asian-American nominated for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 15, 2021 1:26 PM |
[QUOTE] I think the only other performance nominated for both an Oscar and Razzie is Amy Irving in Yentl.
James Coco, Best (and Worst) Supporting Actor, Only When I Laugh
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 15, 2021 1:26 PM |
Arguably Yul Brynner would have been the first Asian actor, born in Vladitvostok
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 15, 2021 1:27 PM |
Per the LA Times, Riz is the first Muslim nominated for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 15, 2021 1:27 PM |
You can also make a distinction between South Asian (Ben and Riz), and East Asian in which Young stands alone.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 15, 2021 1:28 PM |
They're still nominating Yul Brynner? W the actual F?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 15, 2021 1:28 PM |
So if she's supporting, does Glenn wear silver lame this year?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 15, 2021 1:29 PM |
Ma Rainey flopped while Judas did better than expected. Rooting for Another Round; glad Vinterberg pushed out Sorkin. Wish Mads had gotten in over Oldman.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 15, 2021 1:30 PM |
LaKeith is the lead in Judas though, isn’t he?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 15, 2021 1:30 PM |
No Jodie? No surprise, she's an out lesbian now...
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 15, 2021 1:30 PM |
I guess that manufactured buzz for Pete as best actor was just a fizz.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 15, 2021 1:30 PM |
He didn't even get a Globe nomination r38.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 15, 2021 1:31 PM |
Yet the front runner is Hulu release Nomadland r40. Hulu beat Netflix to best drama at emmys with The Handmaid's Tale and will probably beat them to Best Picture at the Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 15, 2021 1:35 PM |
Yes was very surprised that both Lakeith and Daniel were both supporting in Judas, arguably both are leads. Jesse Plemmons was the supporting role in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 15, 2021 1:36 PM |
if there was any year to go back down to five best picture nominees, this would probably be it.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 15, 2021 1:37 PM |
Nomadland is a Searchlight release which got an early release on fellow Disney property Hulu.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 15, 2021 1:37 PM |
Have we heard from Jada yet?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 15, 2021 1:38 PM |
Also don't be surprised if Mank wins in the end; if there's one thing Hollywood loves, it's itself.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 15, 2021 1:38 PM |
Kaluuya I would call supporting, but Lakeith was the lead of the movie. Also Kaluuya is deserving but I was not impressed with Lakeith in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 15, 2021 1:38 PM |
Is thus the worst set of noms in Oscar history? No one is going to watch the ceremony
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 15, 2021 1:41 PM |
Thus was a very weird year in which the vast majority of people never went to a movie theater r48 and many fewer movies were released. What do you expect?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 15, 2021 1:42 PM |
People not thrilled with the Judas supporting category shenanigans
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 15, 2021 1:43 PM |
Mank did not get a screenplay nod, which in an ordinary year would be the death knell
However if there was ever a year the rules don't apply, this is it
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 15, 2021 1:47 PM |
I knew as soon as I read them that people on Twitter would be pissed about Regina king didn’t get nominated for best director. Didn’t the academy know that if a black woman in eligible for an award she MUST be nominated over a white woman, no questions asked.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 15, 2021 1:47 PM |
But extremely curious that a rare movie about the art of screenwriting was snubbed the screenwriters
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 15, 2021 1:48 PM |
R50 Well with all the Asians nominated, blacks can't complain about diversity so this is the next available thing
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 15, 2021 1:48 PM |
Brad pitt is one of the executive producer of Minari.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 15, 2021 1:49 PM |
Mank also did not get the important Editing Nomination..
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 15, 2021 1:49 PM |
Can we get #OscarsSoStraight trending now
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 15, 2021 1:51 PM |
What the hell is “The Father”
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 15, 2021 1:54 PM |
I need to start watching these
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 15, 2021 1:55 PM |
[quote]LaKeith is the lead in Judas though, isn’t he?
As is Kaluuya. Perharps the voters were thinking Jesse Plemons for lead?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 15, 2021 1:56 PM |
R52 Thankfully, the director's branch didn't cave into that. She did a serviceable job but shouldn't be awarded a nomination for it.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 15, 2021 1:58 PM |
I bet poor Glenn is gonna lose to Amanda Seyfried.
Interesting that Trent Reznor is nominated for scoring both Mank and Soul.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 15, 2021 1:59 PM |
Mank isn’t winning anything, much less best picture.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 15, 2021 2:01 PM |
The Academy really needs to start doing something about the category fraud. Two lead actors from the same film are nominated in supporting. That's not fair to actual supporting performances.
(But, hey, it kept out Jared Leto. Maybe not too much of a bad thing.)
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 15, 2021 2:03 PM |
I have heard Soul is actually pretty good, and suspect probably better than some of the best picture nominees.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 15, 2021 2:03 PM |
R45 I will be holding my press conference at noon to discuss the latest OsKKKar nominations.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 15, 2021 2:05 PM |
Soul was excellent.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 15, 2021 2:11 PM |
You can really tell that all the good movies were postponed because of COVID and that it was slim pickings this year. Borat 2 nominated for 2 awards? You've got to be kidding me.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 15, 2021 2:12 PM |
I worked on a nominated film . My 6th.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 15, 2021 2:12 PM |
[quote]As is Kaluuya. Perharps the voters were thinking Jesse Plemons for lead?
It's how the studio or their teams put them up. Kaluuya has always been in Supporting and I agree with that position. Much of the movie is about Bill O'Neal versus Chairman Fred. Lakeith is arguably the lead - especially since in the second act we barely see Chairman Fred as he's in jail. But putting LaKeith in Supporting for Oscars was the usual category fraud in order to help his chances.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 15, 2021 2:14 PM |
And Chloe Zhao becomes the first female Chinese director nominated.
I have not worked on any nominated films ever, but the ones that I do are blockbusters. I have 2 coming out on the HBO Max 2021 releases.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 15, 2021 2:17 PM |
What kind of pithy old Queen doesn’t like Borat’s fine ass or the magic of his daughter, hell yeah she deserves this nomination. How wonderful!!! It’s about time comedy gold wins another Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 15, 2021 2:17 PM |
R64 I wonder what their logic was. Putting a lead in Supporting is usually done to give both actors a chance like when Heath Ledger was put in Leading and Jake Gyllenhaal in Supporting for Brokeback. This makes no sense.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 15, 2021 2:17 PM |
Borat was pretty great—Maria Bakalova completely deserved her nomination. She would have been nominated any year, I think.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 15, 2021 2:26 PM |
Glenn will win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year for the same film.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 15, 2021 2:34 PM |
Chloe Zhao is the first non-white woman to be nominated in director period r71.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 15, 2021 2:41 PM |
Kinda want Andra Day to win. But if the Oscars keep true to form, they’ll give it to someone whom they feel put in their dues acting, not a newcomer like her.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 15, 2021 2:43 PM |
Here are my predictions, cause the Oscars are pretty easy to predict this year:
Best Picture: Nomadland; Best Director: Chloé Zhao; Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman (only the third posthumous acting winner in the Academy's history, and the 2nd Best Actor posthumous winner); Best Actress: Carey Mulligan (I think Frances McDormand was a shoe-in until the buzz started around Mulligan's performance) - McDormand will win an Oscar as a Producer for Nomadland; Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya; Best Supporting Actress: Amanda Seifreyd (I think... this is the one category where I'm not sure)
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 15, 2021 2:47 PM |
I’m a Viola fan but that performance was not worthy of a nomination. Chadwick will win but Riz deserves it.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 15, 2021 2:51 PM |
Make sure some poc win or Jada will have to have a special angry closeted lesbian red table session.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 15, 2021 2:51 PM |
Just give Glenn Close the damn award already. This time must be the one.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 15, 2021 2:52 PM |
[quote] I wonder what their logic was.
Lead Actor was stacked this year— Lindo, Mikkelsen, and Tahar Rahim could’ve got noms. Supporting Actor much less so save the locked/presumed winner Kaluuya. It was a gamble that paid off.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 15, 2021 2:55 PM |
The Oscars need a committee like the Tony's have to determine who falls into leading and who falls into supporting.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 15, 2021 2:59 PM |
R7 Cohen was nominated in the Supporting Actor category for The Trial of the Chicago and not for that interminable, pretentiously titled Borat rehash.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 15, 2021 2:59 PM |
I actually don’t think a Bozeman win is a shoe-in. The Academy did not love MRBB.
If he had been put in Supporting for 5 BLOODS he would have been likelier to win. The Academy may not want to give a Best Actor to a deceased actor, it creates no incentive for the industry.
I think it will be Ahmed versus Yuen.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | March 15, 2021 3:01 PM |
Anyone else miss movie stars ?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 15, 2021 3:03 PM |
R53 Interesting point. Maybe they thought Mank's depiction of the screenwriter was unflattering.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 15, 2021 3:05 PM |
Thank you for explaining why I found Mank so off putting, R46. I felt like I had to try watching it since I figured it would be nominated. It was repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 15, 2021 3:05 PM |
It's kind of hilarious seeing people here get upset about the nominations for Borat. Did r7 have to fall back on her fainting couch after having worked herself into such an apoplectic rage?
Agree with r74; Bakalova absolutely deserved it. Even if you don't like the movie, the nomination is for her performance, which was terrific, not the film itself (it's Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, not Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Completely Proper, Not at All Vulgar Motion Picture). She's not even in the most embarrassing film in that category.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 15, 2021 3:06 PM |
how manu blacks will get the oscars for their shit roles and movies? They made ANY good movie last year??
by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 15, 2021 3:07 PM |
R90 OMG Glenn, you don't have to worry. There's none in your category.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 15, 2021 3:09 PM |
Candace Bergen should have Glenn's Supporting slot for Let Them All Talk. Dianne Wiest and Meryl Streep are good but Bergen walks off with the movie.
Davis is definitely in the wrong category. I actually think that movie and much of what happens between the men in the band could still happen if Ma Rainey was an offscreen character.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 15, 2021 3:09 PM |
I actually think Maria Bakalova will win.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | March 15, 2021 3:10 PM |
Can you imagine if Olivia wins again over Glenn?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | March 15, 2021 3:11 PM |
R77 They gave it to Jennifer Hudson after her Globe win.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | March 15, 2021 3:11 PM |
Can someone explain the difference between Vanessa Kirby, Jodie Comer and Natalie Dormer?
They're all just the same woman, right?
by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 15, 2021 3:12 PM |
I bet the ratings will suck like they have for all these other bullshit award shows.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | March 15, 2021 3:12 PM |
R91 Leslie Odom Jr. for what he got nomiantion?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 15, 2021 3:13 PM |
Mank has the most nominations of any film – 10.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | March 15, 2021 3:13 PM |
R97 exactly, who cares how many niggers will got oscars..
by Anonymous | reply 100 | March 15, 2021 3:15 PM |
[quote]Also don't be surprised if Mank wins in the end; if there's one thing Hollywood loves, it's itself.
Mank is this year’s The Irishman. Big director passion project, produced by Netflix, that people respect more than they love.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 15, 2021 3:16 PM |
Well, that escalated quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 15, 2021 3:16 PM |
I think actress is between Mulligan and Day.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 15, 2021 3:17 PM |
Is Yuen the biggest surprise? It was a small, capable performance... but Oscar?
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 15, 2021 3:17 PM |
Did Sharey Milligan expose sagged teat in PYW? She’s anorexic in interviews but i think it looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | March 15, 2021 3:17 PM |
Me R86.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 15, 2021 3:18 PM |
R100 I'm sure you do. I'm sure you care an awful lot. I'm glad so many are nominated to make pieces of trash like you as angry as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | March 15, 2021 3:18 PM |
Riz Ahmed will win it and rightly so.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | March 15, 2021 3:18 PM |
R104 it is political.. now academy HAS to notice that there are asians, if not they are racist..so they have to nominate shit "actors" from asia to kiss their ass.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | March 15, 2021 3:19 PM |
R100, don’t you have a Klan meeting (or a Trump rally - sane thing) to attended somewhere that is not here?
by Anonymous | reply 111 | March 15, 2021 3:19 PM |
I think they should put the Oscars in youtube now. I feel it’s over. It doesn’t have the same weight or gravitas it used to. I don’t know any of those people with the exception of a few, who probably won’t even go.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | March 15, 2021 3:19 PM |
Maria Bakalova will win.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | March 15, 2021 3:20 PM |
I just watched Minari yesterday and had some expectation that Yuen would have a more substantial role. The film ended kind of abruptly in a way that made me wonder why I bothered. The cast was all uniformly excellent though. I’m surprised it didn’t get a nom for Cinematography. It was beautifully filmed.
Watched that Billie Holiday film too. I love Andra Day but... oh dear. That was a right mess that went on about 40 mins. too long.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | March 15, 2021 3:20 PM |
R107 no i dont.. i see with disgust how many oscars black forced to get for their shit movies , nobody want to see. You are trash and your boring VICTIM movies..
by Anonymous | reply 116 | March 15, 2021 3:21 PM |
[R64] Jared Leto was amazing in The Little Things. Fuck off.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | March 15, 2021 3:21 PM |
R111 I am from europe , idiot. fuck off with your trump, that is you problem.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | March 15, 2021 3:22 PM |
R110 You're nuts. Yuh-jung Youn in that movie was interesting, exactly what a "supporting" role should be. I simply though the father wasn't that astonishing.
I am so tired of the racists on DL.... boring and cowardly.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | March 15, 2021 3:23 PM |
R104 there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Minari. So I’m not surprised it did well this morning. Glad Lakeith got the Leto slot. Little Things was boring ass movie despite the actors in it. No Jodie but it might’ve suffered from not enough voters in the acting branch seeing her film. It’s really Glenn’s to lose this year. I don’t think it’ll take much to finally push her over the edge vote wise and Hillbilly Elegy will do the trick. I’m going with Mank for pic. Zhao director. Chadwick, Carey and Daniel in the other top categories.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 15, 2021 3:25 PM |
[quote]Maria Bakalova – Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm

The two comedy performances of the year, head to head!
by Anonymous | reply 121 | March 15, 2021 3:25 PM |
R119 no i am not....since parasite asians are visible now in oscar academy, lol when where you when kurosawa made movies?? now koreans make good movies lol hahahhahahahha you are so hypocrities..kurosawa did good movies , not some park or pork
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 15, 2021 3:25 PM |
I actually thought the actor who played Malcolm X gave a much better performance than Odom in “One Night in Miami.” But Odom also got to sing so I guess that did it.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 15, 2021 3:25 PM |
More people (black AND non-black) are pissed over (1) Delroy Lindo being snubbed again, (2) Lakeith Stanford being nominated for supporting and not lead. So try again, r52.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 15, 2021 3:27 PM |
R123 plus he’s a double nominee for song too. Bet Spike Lee is pissed off that Da 5 Bloods got next to nothing. But when is Lee NOT pissed off about something.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 15, 2021 3:27 PM |
I think Vinterberg as Director is a surprise, no?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | March 15, 2021 3:28 PM |
I watched Ben Hur this weekend and checked out some of the extras which included the 1959 academy awards.
The thing I noticed was how short the speeches were. Also the winners did not seem emotionally overwhelmed. They were grateful, not pretty stoic compared to how people seem to day at the podium.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 15, 2021 3:29 PM |
R125 Terence Blanchard's score for Da 5 Bloods was lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | March 15, 2021 3:29 PM |
How is Glenn supposed to win for that movie that’s been trashed and made fun of so hard?
by Anonymous | reply 129 | March 15, 2021 3:31 PM |
Yes R127. Speeches seemed 30 seconds long.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | March 15, 2021 3:31 PM |
Great, we have noms, but do we even have a venue or host yet? And the Tina&Amy schtick show is not welcome here!
by Anonymous | reply 131 | March 15, 2021 3:32 PM |
Hey, racist birdshit @ r116: non-whites make movies too. Get over it, already!
by Anonymous | reply 132 | March 15, 2021 3:33 PM |
Hmmm now that I think of it, I wonder if Zhao will win it, since they had a non-American Asian win best Director in 2019.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | March 15, 2021 3:33 PM |
Glenn is winning.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | March 15, 2021 3:34 PM |
R129 actors have won for ALL kinds of performances. Glenn is a pro and an industry vet with nearly 40 years of nominations. I think it’s going be hard to ignore that this year.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 15, 2021 3:35 PM |
I for one am very excited about Blue Ivy’s best song nomination!
by Anonymous | reply 136 | March 15, 2021 3:36 PM |
R126 yes. I had to look up the film on IMDb since I never heard of it. Lol
by Anonymous | reply 137 | March 15, 2021 3:36 PM |
“😂🤣😂🤣😂 @ “Meryl Street”
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 15, 2021 3:37 PM |
I think they've given up on having a host for the time being, R131. And the venue is probably going to be Union Station.
R133, the Academy gave five Oscars in six years to Mexican directors. I doubt they'll have any problem giving back-to-back awards to directors of Asian descent.

Mank will go 0/10 and get shut out of awards, just like it did at the Golden Globes.

I don't get Steven Yeun being up for Best Actor. He was the least impressive person in it. Glad the woman playing the Grandmother go onw. She was great. Not to mention the two kids.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 15, 2021 3:53 PM |
R147 Not to pick on Yeun, but I thought both the Grandmother and the wife were more interesting performances.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | March 15, 2021 3:57 PM |
I'm happy to see so many people of color nominated, but this is not going to be a good year for the awards ratings wise. No one has seen most of these films, and no one has heard of most of the acting nominees except for a very few of them: Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Viola Davis, Frances McDormand, and Glenn Close. Even Sacha Baron Cohen's name has very little recognition except as "that Borat guy."
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 15, 2021 3:58 PM |
R146, I think Mank is the clear front-runner for Best Production Design, so I think it can avoid a total shut-out like The Irishman last year.

R64 So agree! Viola Davis was a LEAD in Fences, and in fact won a Tony as a Lead actress. She should never have been nominated as supporting. This year, she's really supporting, but is nominated as lead. Judas has 2 LEADS...neither is supporting. Plus Judas is not a very good film.

Don't know if it's been talked about here yet, but Promising Young Woman is a TOTAL piece of shit. I am amazed by the attention it's getting. After the first 30 minutes, the story makes no sense, the lead character's actions are confusing, and they have this cheap horror movie soundtrack throughout the whole thing that doesn't fit at all. It's terrible, but as a cis white guy, I guess this translates to literal violence. Laverne Cox was the only thing good about it.

I am thrilled for the diversity among this year's nominees. All of the nominated films have their merits (and knowing families like the one in HE, Glenn actually NAILED her character). This is going to be the first year that many of us can see most of the films with streaming. I'm sure somebody somewhere has compiled a list of which films are available where. If they do I will post it here.

Thanks to the costumer/makeup artist who chimed in here (and congrats!) - great having you on the DL! Hope you stay here and continue to share stories. I worked closely with hair, makeup, costuming on a Cirque du Soleil production in LA. So talented. The production ended, and I moved, I miss being around creative people.

It's been such a shit year for movies. They snubbed Sophia Loren and Ellen Burstyn!! They will probably never receive a nomination again. This is ageism!

R162 with no clear front runner in supporting actress, I think Glenn will finally eek out the win. No it’s not her best work, but neither are a lot of winners and their roles. It’s clearly the overdue factor that’ll carry her to a win. It’s time this woman had an Oscar in any capacity.

Supporting Actress, pre-SAG and BAFTA are ranked as follows IMHO:
1. Bakalova
2. Youn Yuh-jung
3. Olivia Colman
4. Glenn Close
5. Amanda Seyfried
If the same person wins SAG and BAFTA, they are obviously winning the Oscar. Right now I think that's Bakalova but since these awards are political, they may reward Yuh-jung just for being Asian.

Glenn Close has given really engaging performances... and for someone without a lot of range she has a lot of range (if you know what I mean). But MawMaw in HE was a cartoon. not entirely her faulty, Howard should have helped her, scale some of it back. It would be sad to see her finally win for a bad performance.

Hillbilly Elegy is heavily flawed, but it's actually stayed with me longer than most films I've seen this year. It reminds me of The Family Stone--another family movie that isn't that good, but has a warmth to it that is irresistible. I think a lot of people actually enjoyed it but don't want to admit it. You could see Glenn Close getting a surprise win.

I'd love Riz Ahmed winning, but I think the sentiment will go for Chadwick Boseman. It may have been different had Chadwick not passed away.
Amanda Seyfried could win it for Mank, though I found the movie to be boring (took me over 4 days to watch it all the way through) and her performance was... well, it was okay, but not Oscar-worthy by any stretch.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | March 15, 2021 5:19 PM |
The 1993 BSA nominees:
Marisa Tomei – My Cousin Vinny as Mona Lisa Vitodouble-dagger
Judy Davis – Husbands and Wives as Sally Wainwright
Joan Plowright – Enchanted April as Mrs. Fisher
Vanessa Redgrave – Howards End as Ruth Wilcox
Miranda Richardson – Damage as Ingrid Fleming

Same here. It's not always the case that a posthumous nominee wins, but I think in certain tragic situations like Chadwick and Heath Ledger, the voters choose a win to honor them. While good in it, I didn't think Ledger deserved an Oscar for THE DARK KNIGHT. It was a sentimental win.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | March 15, 2021 5:22 PM |
If Seyfried were anything other than an also-ran, she would have won GG and/or Critics Choice. She has no narrative to win the Oscar IMO.

[QUOTE] Vanessa Redgrave – Howards End as Ruth Wilcox
I am a huge fan of the Tomei surprise win, but Redgrave’s performance in Howard’s End has haunted me for years. Especially the walk she takes during the opening credits, watching her family inside her ancestral home through the windows. It’s beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | March 15, 2021 5:25 PM |
Yeah no disrespect to Boseman but posthumous awards do make you wonder what they really won for.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | March 15, 2021 5:25 PM |
It drove me crazy that Seyfried spoke with a fake Noo Yawk accent, even though Marion never sounded like that. I thought Oldman was great, but the movie itself was nothing special, other than the cinematography and design aspects. Actually, I was underwhelmed with a lot of the front runners. My favorite of the ones I've seen is Trial of the Chicago 7.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | March 15, 2021 5:25 PM |
Rumor had it that Jack Palance read the wrong name when he announced Tomei's win. Some claim he read her name off the teleprompter (she was the last nominee when he read the list), but it's clear he read her name on the envelope, and had she not been the winner, the Academy would have made some announcement. Though, in retrospect, it took the LaLa Land producers to acknowledge that Moonlight was the BP winner and not LaLa Land that Warren Beatty had announced.
So who really knows what the Academy would have done, or not done, had Tomei not been the actual winner that year.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | March 15, 2021 5:27 PM |
I also love when good comedic performances win cause they dont get the same respect as dramatic. Though they can often be harder to do at a high caliber level.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | March 15, 2021 5:27 PM |
[quote] If he had been put in Supporting for 5 BLOODS he would have been likelier to win. The Academy may not want to give a Best Actor to a deceased actor, it creates no incentive for the industry.
On the other hand, there is an advantage in giving the OsKKKar to a Black actor that will never be nominated again.

r139, since I work in the periphery of film, I will say that studios have been uhh...courting the Mexican/South American audience for maybe the past 5 or so more years, as they're about 18% of the U.S. population and are avid repeat large family ticket purchasers, as opposed to the less than 6% of all Asian population here. U.S. films play well in Mexico/South America, whereas not so much in China, even with one token Asian in the cast. Crazy Rich Asians did horribly there- $1.5 million.
That said, it's interesting that Asians will get/win Director, but not acting. Not enough good roles or casting.

Winslet throwing both Woody and Polanski under the bus when she knew full well about the allegations/facts was dispicable and terribly self-serving.

Since when does a movie have to be good for a performer to win an Oscar? There have been tons of shit films with extraordinary performances. Jack Lemmon won for Save the Tiger. The film was ok. Jessica Lange won for Blue Sky. Again, a so-so film. Was Dreamgirls a good movie? Nope, but it didn't stop Jennifer Hudson winning an Oscar.
So yeah, I think Riz Ahmed could take it this year, but I still think the Academy is going to go the sentimental road and give it to Bozeman, regardless of the quality of the film, or whether his part was lead or supporting. Dead actor? Check! Dead actor is African-American?? Check check check! The Academy loves patting itself on the back for things they think are right. They'll do it for Bozeman next month.
My picks for who SHOULD win... Riz Ahmed, Frances McDormand, Paul Raci, Yuh-Jung Youn

R268 I was clumsy, I mean Winslet flew to Paris to film a movie with Polanski in 2011 when it was still permissable to work with him. Then after the metoo movement she condemned her own free choices, saying what a mistake it was (whilst absolving herself of blame for making that decision).

Unlike with the SAG Awards (where a studio's category preference is automatically accepted) or the Golden Globes (where a studio's category preference is either approved or overturned before nomination voting), members of the Academy's acting branch decide for themselves which category a performer belongs in.

R41, Nomadland isn’t the sole frontrunner. There are two frontrunners and the other one is The Trial of the Chicago 7.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again-a significant portion of the very large actors voting block of the Academy will not only not vote for Nomadland it will be ranked eighth out of eight because apart from McDormand/Strathairn all the other people in the film are not professional actors.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | March 15, 2021 8:44 PM |

R273 don't be so naive. Polanski was acceptable to work with for many years and Winslet jumped at the chance. She gushed about Woody all through the 2017 awards season (during Metoo) as she had Wonder Wheel to promote and was sniffing out an Oscar nod. Nothing changed about those two in the last decade apart from how unacceptable it became to work with them.
R280 I agree

The Billie Holiday movie was awful! But Andra Day was really incredible in it. I did kind of forget halfway that I was watching an actor play the role and it wasn’t just actually her.
This nomination - almost above all the others - made me the most happy. Paul Raci was so SO GOOD in Sound of Metal.
His character reminded me of my American Sign Language teacher in high school who was the first person to open my eyes to the fact that there was an entire group of Deaf people who were proud of their culture and community (those who were “culturally Deaf” with a capital “D”) and did not want to be hearing.

by Anonymous | reply 294 | March 15, 2021 10:41 PM |
Borat was one of the characters that Cohen did in Da Ali G Show. That’s why the first movie was nominated in Adapted Screenplay. It was considered an adaptation of that television show.

I thought Maria Bakalova was brilliant in Borat 2, especially in that Guiliani sequence. She had A LOT to pull off in that scene (which was essentially an improvisation) and she did it all.
She’s definitely worthy of Oscar consideration this year.

Very disappointing that Ellen Burstyn, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sophia Loren couldn't snag nominations. In a year in which we weren't forced with another Streep nomination, they could have went with more veteran actresses
Love Glenn, but that performance looks hammy as all get out. Very beneath her usual quality of work.
Delroy Lindo should have been nominated for Best Actor and Chadwick as Best Supporting Actor. And both should have won.
Stunned Regina King didn't get in as Best Director for One Night In Miami.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | March 15, 2021 11:17 PM |
Yeah, you can quibble with the Borat screenplay nomination (especially for a film that was largely improvised), but Bakalova's work was flawless. She was a recent acting school graduate, acting in a foreign language, including doing a lot of improv (in scenes that couldn't be reshot) and she was completely believable from start to finish. Her character had a full arc, changing a lot from the beginning to the end of that film, and she pulled off every facet with ease. It's the kind of performance that should be celebrated.

I wonder if the news that Peter Thiel (bleh) donated $10 million to a possible senate campaign for J.D. Vance (the author, and primary subject, of Hillbilly Elegy) will remind folks that the movie was just right-wing propaganda and make voters less likely to want to give Glenn an Oscar for it.

R302 I knew King wouldn’t make the cut. She did an adequate job for her film, but if you watch it it really doesn’t scream directing nomination. Plus I think Regina fatigue is setting in with her four Emmys and an Oscar in the last few years. Rewarded enough for now.
R303 the nomination is glory enough for her. The performance is silly and gross. The character is annoying as hell in the film. I guess you could argue then she did her job if you found her this way, but the actress isn’t in the other four nominees league. Especially Close and Colman.

by Anonymous | reply 311 | March 15, 2021 11:32 PM |
Why isn't there an outcry about Bakalova being nominated in Supporting when she was clearly a lead in that film? She had just as much screen time as Cohen and was just as important to the story. If they're going to get uppity about category fraud w/ Kaluuya and Stanfield, why not her?
by Anonymous | reply 312 | March 15, 2021 11:34 PM |
r312, Because the academy has a long history of female leads in films with male leads being dropped down to supporting. Just recently, Vikander in The Danish Girl and Davis in Fences. It's category fraud, but at least it can be argued that the male lead is the main character, and everyone else is supporting (even if it's not really true).
With Judas and the Black Messiah, they're both the title characters. It could kind of be justified that Hampton is more of a supporting role to O'Neal, but if they're both supporting...who's the main character? It's not like Chicago 7 or One Night in Miami, where there's no real lead and it's a true ensemble, so everyone is supporting. I mean, Thelma and Louise weren't nominated in supporting. That would have been category fraud too.

I'm ready to vote.
Best Picture- I'm gonna vote for The Father because I think it's the best film of 2020, even though it doesn't have a prayer, because I don't care if Nomadland wins.
Best Actor- Anthony Hopkins because he truly deserves it and I hope more people see it and understand what an amazing performance it is and it somehow overcomes the sentimentality of Boseman's nom.
Best Actress- Andra Day, not because I think she deserves it, but because she has the best chance of upsetting Carey Mulligan, who I loathe and whose movie I loathed. I'd vote for anyone who offered a serious challenge to Mulligan. (My choice would have been Diane Lane for Let Him Go.)
Best Supporting Actor- Honestly, I really don't give a shit, but I'll hold off to see if anyone poses a serious challenge for Kaluuya, because I can't fucking stand him, either. This is the one category this year that should be canceled because of the dearth of viable nominees. No one deserves it. I happen to be a big fan of Lakeith Stanfield, so I'll likely vote for him if no one else really surges into 2nd place.
Best Supporting Actress- I'm gonna vote for Glenn because no one here deserves it, so it might as well be a career award. (My choice would have been Charlene Swankie for Nomadland.)
Director- I'll vote for Chloe Zhao because I thought she deserved it for The Rider, and my choice (Florian Zeller) wasn't nominated.
Original Screenplay- I'll vote for Trial of the Chicago 7 because it has the best chance of beating Promising Young Woman, which I hated. I think Sound of Metal is best, but it doesn't have a hope in hell, so no point in wasting the vote. I despise Emerald Fennell, I think she's completely incompetent, and to give her an Oscar would be horrifying.
Adapted Screenplay- I'll vote for The Father. This category had nothing else worth nominating.
Animated Film- Soul. Will win. Should win. I wish it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay instead of One Night in Miami.
Documentary- Nothing I liked was included. (I thought Mr. Soul was the best doc this year.) I'll probably go for Crip Camp.
I'm not gonna list everything else (which I'm sure you're all grateful for.)

I disagree, R316. Wild, Into the Wild, and Nomadland are very different films - three of my favorites, I might add - though they all do touch upon living on the peripheries of society in a meditative and reflective fashion.
While I consider all three stories triumphant in their own ways, arguments could be made for Wild being literally triumphant; Into the Wild being tragic; and Nomadland toeing the line between the two.

I really do think Close is going to take this. I can't believe it's for that film, though.
And I do feel Hopkins is gaining traction. So many people I know have said that his performance is their favourite of the year.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | March 16, 2021 1:02 AM |
I do hope Hopkins gains traction. How many films have we seen about dementia? Hell, there were five of them this year alone! But Hopkins made me feel as if I'd never seen it done before. It was a truly brilliant performance.
Look, Boseman was a talented actor, and it totally is tragic that he died so young, but the Oscars are not a participation trophy. (As much as Jada would like them to be.) I believe Boseman should have been nominated a couple of times in the past, and I firmly believe that had he lived, he'd have some day earned a win. But his is not a career that needs to be recognized with an unearned award.

R340 I agree. Boseman was good not great yet. Nowhere near the level of Hopkins but very few actors are. I’d vote obviously for him, but the Boseman sentiment is strong and I don’t think much will happen to derail it. Even if we were pandemic free, Hopkins wouldn’t be campaigning, which he would need to do overtake Boseman. Hopkins has an Oscar and two Emmys. So can’t feel TOO sorry for him. But his performance in the Father is riveting.

R305 Foster may not have wanted another nomination, she already has two awards. I think in instances like this we often overlook a previous winner's desire to let someone else have their moment in the spotlight, a scepticism regarding the process or simply a general disinterest in taking home another award. The same goes for Sophia Loren; she already has a competitive Oscar (and, inexplicably, an honorary award given to her after her original win), perhaps she just couldn't have been bothered.

[quote]R339 I really do think Close is going to take this. I can't believe it's for that film, though.
The funny thing is all the future cinema books etc. listing her win will show her looking so run down and utterly hag-ish in that role.
Enjoy, Glenn!

Anthony Hopkins got one of the first Razzie nods for that movie with Shirley MacLaine.

Missed opportunity by not nominating Jodie Foster this year. They could've hyped up the possibility of repeat Best Actress/Actor wins for her and Hopkins 30 years after their wins for Silence of the Lambs.
by Anonymous | reply 363 | March 16, 2021 3:59 AM |
I doubt Hopkins will attend (assuming they have them live.)
He didn't go last year and didn't even bother turning on his computer for the Golden Globes. (and he likes to make videos. I've seen some he's made talking about various stuff.) He's over it.

not really r368 (see James Dean, lost twice after his death.)
Only Heath Ledger and Peter Finch have won after they died. (and Finch was already on the way to a win anyway. He had won the Globe and was doing Oscar press when he dropped dead.)

Re The Marisa Tomei win way back. Judy Davis was brilliant in Husbands and Wives and should have been a shoe-in but maybe she lost votes because of the Woody /Mia scandal attached to the film and also how she reportedly gave David Lean a hard time on a Passage to India.

[quote] Anthony Hopkins already has one and numerous nominations to boot. Give Chadwick his due. If Heath Ledger can win for chewing scenery for two and a half hours, then Chadwick can win one.
I don't think Heath Ledger deserved his Oscar, either, and only got it because he died. Peter Finch, OTOH, totally deserved his Oscar, except he was in the wrong category and should have been supporting. Holden was the lead in Network and should have won in that category. It should have been Holden, Dunaway and Finch as winners, with additional nominations for Ned Beatty and Marlene Warfield in supporting categories. (Fuck Beatrice Straight.)
by Anonymous | reply 375 | March 16, 2021 5:19 AM |
Who do you think should have beat Ledger r375? It wasn't a very competitive year.
Holden was supposedly mad that Finch insisted on being placed in lead. He thought he'd win otherwise. Love Warfield but Straight is excellent too. Goes thru a whole range of emotions in one scene. Ned Beatty did get a nomination btw.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | March 16, 2021 5:24 AM |
Robert Duvall was great too, in a tiny role. I thought Holden was very good, but his role and performance can't compare to De Niro in "Taxi Driver".
by Anonymous | reply 377 | March 16, 2021 5:28 AM |
De Niro had just won two years before though. I doubt they'd have given him another one so soon especially for a violent film like Taxi Driver..

Yes, I know Beatty got the nom (which is awesome), R376. I was just saying those were my picks for awards and noms.
Ummm, hmmm.... I forget who was nominated that year (2008) for Supporting Actor. My choice would have been David Kross for The Reader, but he wasn't nominated. Ok, I just looked them up. I wouldn't have nominated any of those five for Supporting Actor, so Ledger getting it didn't really matter one way or the other. I suppose of those five, you may as well have given it to him as a make up award for Brokeback Mountain. But for pure performance in that category, no. I would have chosen Kross and my runner up would have been Brendan Gleeson for In Bruges.
I was not yet a voter at that point, but I guess I would have voted for Ledger for just that reason. (I don't get to pick acting nominees.)

Tomei won because she deserved it. Her performance stood out in all the best ways. No one could tell those four English cunts apart, anyway, so even if Tomei had stunk, she probably still would have won, but the cherry on top is that her performance was delightful and she's proven herself in films over and over since.

Please STFU with the conspiracy theories about Marisa Tomei’s win already. Please, for the love of Audrey Rose, Ivy and all that is holy!
Tomei is hilarious in a star-making role that carried that film over the finish line. Of course she deserved her win. And for all of you idiots still reviving these stupid stories - she easily fits the Academy template for contemporary BSA wins: she was young, pretty and talented. Just like Angelina a few years later and many others after. Vikander. I’m sure there are others. It’s what they do in that category, primarily. Not at all unheard of.
Shouldn’t Glenn Close win in a year when they actually have a ceremony so she can at least get a standing ovation? I’m sure even M feels genuinely sorry for her now. She’s going to go from wearing that gold “gimme my Oscar” dress to winning on her laptop all alone for a film the critics trashed and for which she’s also going to collect a Razzie? Jodie Foster has a lot to answer for, taking Glenn’s Oscar in 1989 - she might as well have set Hinckley on her! Poor Glenn.
I liked Ammonite even if ultimately it was a bit undercooked. Kate was great in it, as always. It was very atmospheric.
The problem with the Oscars these days is that the narratives are all set so early. It’s boring. There really wasn’t one surprise yesterday. It’s like they’re awards given out by people who aren’t particularly excited about movies.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | March 16, 2021 9:15 AM |
Glenn should dress up in that gold dress again, get REALLY drunk and wear like Kabuki/clown makeup and just make a total spectacle of herself in honour of all the big, hairy bullshit! Then she should go to the Razzie’s like a knife-wielding Alex Forrest. Time to have some fun with this!

And because I know you bitches will be coming for me - esp. DL’s own Dylan Farrow - here are some young pretty things that have won Oscars since Marisa Tomei, including the shift to the lead category:
Mira Sorvino Angelina Jolie Jennifer Connelly Catherine Zeta-Jones (!) Rachel Weisz (out of nowhere) Anne Hathaway Lupita Nyong’o Alicia Vikander
In recent years in Best Actress: Emma Stone Jennifer Lawrence Brie Larson Natalie Portman
The Academy loves nothing more than to give a career boost to some young ingenue in the hopes of turning into a star. That Marisa Tomei won over four old crones in her category is hardly an anomaly. People act like that’s never happened before or since. Stop being so ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | March 16, 2021 10:38 AM |
The interesting thing about phasing out annual nominations for whatever Meryl Streep did is that it suggests that roles for women are getting better. Though it was fairly obvious at the time, esp. throughout the ‘90s, Meryl Streep was the beneficiary of the paucity of roles for women in the industry and since, as someone mentioned above, for a long time she got sent everything first, it follows that of course she had a leg up there as well, while her contemporaries had to scrounge for her scraps. She not only benefitted from this problem but she also served to eclipse it by suggesting other actresses just weren’t as good as she was. Now her mediocre, hammy performances are ignored and frankly perhaps they should’ve been sooner. Which isn’t to say she hasn’t been deserving of acclaim - Prada was definitely an Oscar-worthy performance - but she’s done less to break down barriers for women in the industry than breaking down barriers for Meryl in the industry. Y’know, she’s a careerist like everyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | March 16, 2021 10:47 AM |
Also, all these ideas about how great everyone was in Network - erm, hello? Idiots? That’s because NETWORK is one of the BEST screenplays ever written, just terming with great parts for actors. It wasn’t the actors that was so great - though they’re great, of course - it’s the WRITING! Great performances are powered by great writing, people. That’s why a great actress like Glenn Close is so terrible in Hillbilly Elegy. Her performance is not supported by the writing.

Streep never suggested she was better than other actresses. She also turned down parts that went to other actresses. She worked a lot but I think your assumption that she was the problem regarding enough parts for women over 40 is false. That is a perpetual industry issue, where women over 40 are not considered valuable.

You're talking about small British films, R426. And getting them made is entirely different than them opening. You cannot compare those to the larger budgeted Hollywood films that Streep is able to open and make hits. I could name several small budgeted indie films in the US that have TV names in them that are able to get them financed (at those small budgets) but those names don't help open those films or make them hits.
by Anonymous | reply 428 | March 16, 2021 8:11 PM |
Is Streep really still able to open films anymore? Her biggest recent hits featured her in bit parts (Little Women, Mary Poppins Returns), and even The Post seemed to underperform, considering the involvement of Hanks and Spielberg.

Honestly, if it wasn't for Weinstein's pull in getting her an oscar for Iron Lady, I wonder if she would still be a two time winner? That was the time when they were really name checking her off on the ballot every year.

I thought Olivia Cooke was very good, also. For me, Riz was absolutely transformative. It was a raw, real, lived in performance. I thought he was amazing.
The one person that did nothing for me was Paul Raci. For some reason, his performance (and his character) turned me off. I don't think he was bad, he just didn't move me.

Feinberg Forecast: Scott's First Post-Oscar Noms Read of the Race:
by Anonymous | reply 469 | March 20, 2021 12:32 AM |
Soderbergh will stage the Oscars as a reboot of his own "Contagion", with Gwyneth dying while presenting an award via Zoom.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | March 20, 2021 12:47 AM |
Feinberg’s forecasts seem solid in terms of most of the front-runners in major categories, although I think he’s dead wrong in Song. I’d put “Husavik” in first because it’s the only one that matters to the movie, while “Io Si” has a shot just because of Diane Warren.

[quote]He arrives at these standings by drawing upon consultations with voters and strategists, analysis of marketing and campaigns, results of awards that precede the Oscars and the history of the Oscars itself.
This is why I find it interesting that people actually think the Best Actress race is going to come down to two people, Andra Day and Carey Mulligan since, given the Academy's track record, it's fairly easy to predict that Carey will be the one taking home the award. Though the Academy has come a long way in its quest for diversity -- and deserves a great deal of credit this year for its wide-ranging slate of nominees -- the Best Actress category has always been where white women rule, deservedly or not, and it's hard to imagine that changing this year. The last time a woman of color won this award -- and to this day she remains the only one -- was nearly 20 years ago, so with that kind of record as your guide, I think it's safe to say that Carey has nothing to worry about. And this observation isn't to suggest that Andra Day should win simply to satisfy a racial quota but to say that, when you have what are arguably two equally-great and -lauded performances, it's not unreasonable to expect the Academy will do what it's always historically done -- default to the white girl -- which is why I do not find Feinberg's prediction in this category the least bit surprising.
Had Andra Day's PR team been smarter, they would've committed the greatest act of category fraud ever by campaigning for her to be nominated in the supporting category, where women of color have had much better luck.

Carey Mulligan at worst gave an interesting performance. At best a daring one. I personally liked her performance and found it jarring. I can see how some can love or hate it. I just thought it was unhesitant. Even when the story or the character shifted to an off beat I felt like she went with it unafraid. That too can make a fine performance for me at least sometimes. Theres thoughtful effort.
by Anonymous | reply 478 | March 20, 2021 5:15 AM |
I think the narrative lets Carey down and that will hurt her chances for the Oscar. I didn't want to see a triumphant feminist ending like The Invisible Man which I hated but i think PYW loses it in the climax.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | March 20, 2021 5:20 AM |
Andra Day was as good as she could be in a terrible movie with an awful script. It's really either Mulligan or Frances gets 3 which is not gonna happen. Carey just needs to shut the fuck up for 5 weeks.

Mulligan is more accomplished as an actor with numerous good performances to her credit that will push her over Day who I'm not even sure will place 2nd. Quite frankly I'd never even seen her before and she wasn't Marion Cotillard great she can trump resumes

I loved the old lady in Minari. Trying to win the grandson's love is so much more endearing than anything Glenn's character did who I just found gross. When the little boy runs after her at the end was very moving.

She was fine, but overrated. She was better than Yeun, though, who barely registered for me. And the less said about Will Patton, the better. Of course, the only person in the cast who really deserved all the accolades (Yeri Han) has all but been ignored.

by Anonymous | reply 494 | March 20, 2021 7:28 AM |
I found Yeun very moving. He would be my second choice after Anthony Hopkins who honestly should have no competition. He's brilliant in a sneaky good movie. I love the point of view the movie gives you and he really takes you into that world in his own mind. It's a perfectly modulated performance that would win in any year where they didn't have to reward a very nothing performance. Bosewick was fine but I don't even know if that performance is a leading performance. There just wasn't much to it.

by Anonymous | reply 500 | March 20, 2021 10:41 AM |
The thing that sealed it for me with Bakalova is the arc of her character, when she starts to empower herself as an individual by the end. Plus her grasp of the entire technique of SBC’s process - don’t kid yourselves, none of that is for shrinking violets. Aside from the father/daughter dance - which required a LOT of guile on her part, even if she was side by side with SBC - but when she addresses those ladies about her orgasm. Beyond all that, the position she was in with Guiliani is just...next level commitment. A lot of actors can’t even deliver a line convincingly and she had to do all of that AND not let her acting partner down who just happens to be SBC/Borat! It took a wealth of talent, technique and BIG BALLS for her to do that. She’s fearless.
I think it really hits home at the end of the film, when she struts by him having made a success of herself. It’s quite moving to see them together in matching suits - not since Ricki Lake partnered with Divine in John Waters’ original Hairspray has an established comic character spawned such a perfect and worthy partner.
And that’s before you take in how meaningful it would be to Eastern European actors - for whom she has already made history by not having to play a thug or a prostitute. Her win would be very meaningful and open doors for other Bulgarian and EEu performers of which there are MANY. (There are a lot of hot Bulgarian guys, many that I know of in London.)
She has a great narrative - she may have even swung the U.S. election - and a very Oscar-worthy performance. If she were American, nobody would think twice about giving her the Oscar. The support for her is there regardless and she deserves it.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | March 20, 2021 2:27 PM |
The Variety writer may have stated his point awkwardly but wasn’t he actually saying that Mulligan’s approach to the role added another dimension to it because she wasn’t playing some obviously hot sexy woman (as Robbie might’ve done) but someone who, like a superhero, donned a specific uniform or drag to assume the character that baits the men? I mean, if there are hair and makeup demonstrations online so you too can wear the signature hair and makeup that her character did, doesn’t that prove the whole point? I think he was suggesting that Mulligan’s casting allowed for the character to assume an alter-ego and added dimension whereas perhaps a more obvious casting would not.
She basically created a Streisand effect by using it to air her insecurities.

But the performance by the lead actress, Jasna Đuričić, was astonishing. She is on camera almost every second, and although the story gives itself to high drama - life and death stuff - she is subtle and moving. Superior to any of the actresses nominated.

R521 As a film, it was ok, if a bit predictable. But it's easy to take Hopkins for granted. A couple of his scenes were remarkable. The "I feel like I'm losing all my leaves" speech. Yes R523, I agree. But ultimately a film has to be about something. Florian Zeller is too concerned with his gimmicky setup and using the effects of dementia to support a tepid genre film as if it’s a psychological horror, stymying any other characters. It reminded me of The Sixth Sense (not just because the truly fine Olivia Williams is in it) the way characters around him don’t respond or don’t answer him, like Ron Howard’s terrible A Beautiful Mind when he treats the subject of mental health like a spy thriller for the first hour, y’know, for the audience’s enjoyment. Though I suppose R522’s stupid comment is proof enough that some people need the pull of genre tropes to engage them in a subject as serious and devastating as dementia. I didn’t understand to whose p.o.v. Olivia Coleman’s character belonged to when we were meant to empathise with her or when she was strangling her father - the film lacked dexterity. No wonder Florian Zeller didn’t get a Best Director nomination. The whole thing would’ve been a lot more interesting and, frankly terrifying, if it had been from her point of view; the audience would’ve empathised with her, there would’ve been a clear dramatic arc, and Hopkins could still have given his performance which would’ve existed in a dramatic context rather than a vacuum. But Zeller is too pre-occupied with his gimmick; I couldn’t really engage with anyone’s plight because there was so much misdirection in the film, the viewer is just conditioned to sit back, not take it too seriously and count down the minutes until it plays itself out, which even then was poorly revealed.
I will give Zeller one thing: I didn’t believe/think for one second that the flat belonged to Hopkins so was put off by the stylised nature of the film from the very start.
by Anonymous | reply 533 | March 28, 2021 8:15 AM |
There is no way Chadwick is losing the Oscar. He has the double whammy of being dead and BLM in his favor.
by Anonymous | reply 534 | March 28, 2021 8:19 AM |
The Father tried to be a bit like The Others and I kept waiting for Mark Gatiss to say, “But I AM your daughter!”
I very quickly became a film about “whose flat is it? Is it his flat? Or her flat? Or this other guy’s flat? Is Rufus Sewell going to lay claim to it too? Can I see the property deed of ownership, please?” In a film about dementia. That tells you how far off course this twaddle was.

by Anonymous | reply 536 | March 28, 2021 8:38 AM |
While dementia is certainly no picnic for the person suffering from it, it’s devastation is primarily experienced by loved ones who are powerless to do anything about it and become the forgotten faces of the sufferer. Putting the focus on the patient - allowing Hopkins to be King Lear or Don Quixote in a living room - is where this film goes wrong. It would’ve been far more interesting to see the full affect of this on Olivia Coleman and what she suffered for it, presumably the loss of a marriage and a lot of marital strife, deciding to build a new life for herself based on the principle that she is forgotten by her father anyway, etc. The Father should’ve been The Daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | March 28, 2021 8:46 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 538 | March 28, 2021 2:24 PM |
R537 While not entirely successful, I think it was the confusing, shifting markers of place, time, reality and identity - trying to dramatize the experience of dementia - was the unique attempt by the film, and gave a context for Hopkin's performance. But as was said, there were glitches in this - was the daughter strangling him an image from his mind, her mind, or what? Or was it just a cheap trick to move the viewers? The script, not the direction, needed work. Even though it was stage drama (or because it was stage drama?).
by Anonymous | reply 539 | March 28, 2021 4:04 PM |

Only 2 actors have won posthumously. Peter Finch was going to win anyway. He'd already won the Globe and was heavily favored before he died. (only a few weeks before the Oscars.)
Ledger would have won if he was alive too. There was only weak competition and he was coming off a close loss for Brokeback Mountain.
Boseman is new to Oscar caliber roles and his death is obviously helping him win stuff since there is another strong candidate.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | March 28, 2021 8:36 PM |

Ledger's fans practically demanded the academy give him the oscar before the film was even released. No one else even had a chance that year because his name was practically engraved on the trophy a year before the ceremony. And he was never favored to win for Brokeback Mountain. A piece of revisionist history his fans love to peddle. Phillip Seymour Hoffman won every award that year. He never stood a chance.
There's none of that ridiculous sense of entitlement coming from Chadwick Boseman's fans.

For example, I rolled my eyes hard when Heath Ledger swept the awards in 1999. He wouldn't have won if he had not died six months before the movie's release and a year before the ceremony. For one, the Academy has rarely awarded actors under 30 in Best Actor and Supporting Actor. To date, only Adrian Brody (age 29) has won in Best Actor for THE PIANIST; and four twentysomethings have won in Supporting Actor: George Chakiris (age 27) in WEST SIDE STORY, Timothy Hutton (age 20) in ORDINARY PEOPLE, Cuba Gooding, Jr. (age 29) in JERRY MAGUIRE, and Ledger (age 28) in THE DARK KNIGHT.
If Ledger had not died, I think of the nominees, Robert Downey, Jr. had the comeback narrative. After spending the late '90s and early 2000s in rehab/prison for drug abuse/possession, he bounced back in 2008, which was a banner year for him. He had IRON MAN and TROPIC THUNDER, which were hits and well-received by critics. He was practically welcomed back with open arms. I would have bet on him winning that year had Ledger not croaked.

R563 Again, you are being disingenuous. Many people (perhaps not you) are saying that "the only reason Bozeman would win is BECAUSE he is black", is racist. All the rest is just covering tracks. You are objecting because of a BLACK actors "hammy" performance, and particularly unhappy BECAUSE he is black. You are not objecting to a "hammy" performance, in general.

R563 Not for a broad comedy, bruh.

I think we are going to see a surprise in one of the acting categories and it won't be Best Actress. I think Hopkins is far and away the best in the BA category but would not have a problem with the Minari guy upsetting the guy acting in a play with no sense of a camera. He could not capture an intimate setting because he needed to shout it the balconies with his bugle so no one misses a word.

R566 In fairness, the direction sorta sucked. Everyone in the production was way too stagey. Director needed to help them all scale it back.

Are the Sag Awards on Zoom too?
by Anonymous | reply 568 | March 29, 2021 3:42 AM |
I thought the actor that played Toledo was wonderful and kept it real for the most part. He seemed to be acting in another movie in moments. It wasn't until the absurd ending that I thought it went to the absurd. That was one deadly, sultry and drama filled recording session. People cried, screamed, came, and died. Oscars all around

The SAG awards are on zoom. They aren't even live. They are taping them this week and will edit together a one hour brief version to air on Sunday.
And no way would Downey Jr. have beat Ledger. Ledger was being touted as the next James Dean or Paul Newman after Brokeback. They would have made up for him not winning there......and he did do an excellent job as the Joker. Made it unique and different from Nicholson and Cesar Romero.

Are we expecting Miss Viola Davis to make an appearance in this abbreviated Zoom broadcast they are blessing us with? I refuse to miss her face reaction when Carey Mulligan's name is announced.

Viola would never miss a chance to win another award. She'd crawl through a vat of covid if it meant a trophy.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | March 29, 2021 4:14 AM |
R572, St Viola would LOVE to be able to crawl through a vat of Covid. The drama, the tension, the brave dignity, the noble self-righteousness, the SUFFERING!!! She could live off that story for the next 30 years.

R564 of course, understand it that boseman was not so amazing and people have right to say it out loud .. we say that he is black because black people lately force acedemy to give the same amount of nominations and awards ,if not academy is racist..it is impossible to keep almost the same amount of awards to black and whites because there are less black actors in usa. Simple math and statistics.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | March 29, 2021 1:16 PM |
R559 You are racist, because you cannot acept the fact that white people prefer white actor then black one.. Grow up, fucking moron..Boseman was tiring in that movie which is another victim movie about blacks...

Another vote for Anthony Hopkins. His performance in The Father was mesmerizing, so much so that the other actors were lacklustre in comparison (I can't imagine why Olivia Colman was nominated for a Supporting Actress Oscar, as her performance was not noteworthy). Hopkins took the viewer on an hour and 37 minute journey through the mind of an elderly man sinking into fog and oblivion. Memorable and most deserving of the Oscar.

Mulligan is very diplomatically silent since the nominations. Focus gave the bitch a publicist and said you don't have anything to say til April 25

R584, she still gave a very lengthy interview before SAG voting ended today.

Could someone please explain to me why Frank Langella wasn't nominated for The Trial of the Chicago 7? He was by far the standout performance in that film, and possibly the best supporting performance of the year, and yet he failed to get a nomination. Is he that hated in the industry?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | March 30, 2021 7:15 PM |
It’s hard to believe Langella is still alive.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | March 30, 2021 7:30 PM |
R587, I think the Trial of the Chicago 7 team made the decision to prioritize Cohen pretty early. He was always the easiest sell: his character is a quasi-lead and the film is in part about how he evolves. Add in the Academy's fondness for comedic actors doing more serious roles and the fact that Cohen so thoroughly humiliated Giuliani, and it makes total sense that they'd push him over Langella.

Voting just concluded for the SAG Awards. My votes went to:
Anthony Hopkins, Carey Mulligan, Sacha Baron Cohen, Olivia Colman, cast of The Trial of the Chicago 7, Hugh Grant, Michaela Coel, Josh O’Connor, Emma Corrin, Jason Sudeikis, Catherine O’Hara, cast of Bridgerton, cast of Ted Lasso. Didn’t vote for stunt ensemble.
