Bad Movie Lovers Rejoice: We have a new Tommy Wiseau

Or should I say we have a new Jorge Ameer, since this is a gay themed film.

The person in question is Sri Lankan triple threat actor/writer/producer Gehan Cooray, who has adapted George Bernard Shaw's The Millionairess into a same sex version film. He plays the title role (and I assume by everything I've seen pretty much was the person in charge, hiring the director only to yell action and cut).

The film has not yet been released, only having played in maybe two no-name festivals, but somehow made it onto the AMPAS streaming channel for Oscar consideration. I cannot fathom how or why. And I don't see this thing getting an actual release, which is a shame because it's so laughably wretched, it must be seen to be believed.

The only thing I could find that's public is the trailer, which is on Vimeo. Here's the link. And to think, if not for Gehan's massive ego (and his daddy's bank account) I might have missed this noxious piece of cinema.

yikes so amateurish.....no way.

by Anonymousreply 1March 14, 2021 5:00 AM

This trailer was good.

by Anonymousreply 2March 14, 2021 7:12 AM

Good in what way?

by Anonymousreply 3March 14, 2021 7:40 AM

I'm only sorry that I was not the first to discover this obstreperous atrocity. Truly awful!

by Anonymousreply 4March 14, 2021 8:21 AM

Years & years ago I watched Contadora is for Lovers (horrible title), the movie was so bad, laugh out loud funny in only the serious parts, I thought the director couldn’t possibly be serious or even semi-successful. Proved wrong on both counts?!?

by Anonymousreply 5March 14, 2021 8:34 AM

Wow... I thought you were exaggerating, OP. That looks amazingly awful

by Anonymousreply 6March 14, 2021 9:15 AM

I just saw that movie recently r5. The gay movie Beatific Vision sounds better than movie posted at the OP.

by Anonymousreply 7March 14, 2021 9:57 AM

Obviously a comedy, a really really bad one but "The Room" was supposed to be deadly serious.

by Anonymousreply 8March 14, 2021 10:08 AM

Oh wow. That trailer made me blush.

by Anonymousreply 9March 14, 2021 10:29 AM

This movie cannot premiere before movie theaters reopen -- if ever a film was made for enjoying communal mockery, this is it!

What's so brilliant (I looked at a couple of Gehan Cooray's other clips at OP's link) is that all his supporting players effortlessly out-act him in every scene because, you know, they can actually act. Or maybe they just haven't been let in on the joke? It's hard to tell.

The other fascinating thing revealed in those clips is that apparently he's actually had some classical singing training -- his voice might land him an Off-Broadway role, if he could act. I just assumed that he'd used someone else's voice for the Billionaire movie because the dubbing in those snippets is SO bad that you'd never believe he was actually singing at all.

Whenever the movie comes out, I'm going to celebrate it by getting drunk and viewing it with some friends.

by Anonymousreply 10March 14, 2021 11:15 AM

Well, thanks, OP -- I've now gone down a Gehan Cooray rabbit hole, and swiftly found this totally legit and not-at-all PR-created paean to his "multi-hyphenate" prowess in the internationally renowned Lanka Business News.

Now I really can't wait to see the film.

Yikes that was so bad - that acting reminded me of a high-school play.

by Anonymousreply 12March 14, 2021 11:35 AM

The original play is an odd mix of political point-making and rather flat broad humour.

At that link at r11 it lists Cooray's accomplishments, and then says, "prompting Marc Cherry, the creator of hit TV series Desperate Housewives, to refer to Gehan as a 'multi-hypenate.'"

But it doesn't say multi-hypenate what. In that nasty queen Cherry's mouth multi-hypenate sounds like a true insult.

by Anonymousreply 14March 14, 2021 12:09 PM

Thank you, OP! I couldn’t believe how incredibly terrible that was.

by Anonymousreply 15March 14, 2021 12:42 PM

That was utterly dreadful! 😆 I still kinda want to see it, though.

by Anonymousreply 16March 14, 2021 12:52 PM

It's true. And none of them are terribly wonderful actors, but they mop up the floor with him. I kept watching the movie so that more actors would come along, since the first scene is just him and the attorney and it goes on forever (and feels even longer), because I was curious if much of the cast was as incompetent as Cooray. They are not. Then I kept watching because I was marveling at the fact that all these actors could keep a straight face during his performance. I can just imagine what the holding area must have been like.

Again, I cannot believe that AMPAS put this on their streaming app without proof of a release date. They even listed it in their films eligible for Best Picture guide. I wish I could share it with all of you, but I'm not jeopardizing membership. God, I hope this gets some kind of release. I imagine it will. Anyone with this kind of ego and totally skewed sense of his own abilities would never deprive the world of his multi-hyphenateness.

by Anonymousreply 17March 14, 2021 9:15 PM

At first I thought he must be camping it up and playing things for laughs. Then it became clear that he was deadly serious and also one of the worst actors to ever appear on film. I so want to see this.

by Anonymousreply 18March 14, 2021 10:01 PM

It was so bad it was entertaining. Thanks for the link, OP!

by Anonymousreply 19March 14, 2021 10:04 PM

That trailer was kind of funny. I'd watch it. And the guy in the cap was cute.

by Anonymousreply 20March 14, 2021 10:16 PM

Holy shit! Did any other current (or in my case, reformed) soap fans notice Heather Tom (Vicki Newman, Katie Logan) toward the end? She has like 5 Emmys and this is the best she can do?

The trailer is dreadful, but how did reasonably talented actors end up involved?

by Anonymousreply 21March 14, 2021 10:17 PM

Oh my God. I need to see this AND have Brendad Ickson on the red carpet for the premiere.

by Anonymousreply 22March 14, 2021 10:33 PM

[quote]With a panache reminiscent of Old Hollywood and the grand acting styles of such stars as Bette Davis and John Barrymore, director Michael Philip visualizes the production with a deft feel for the complex characters, while he catapults it with breakneck speed, recalling the romantic movie comedies of the 1930s.

[quote]“I would be ecstatic if both the Hollywood film industry, and a broader global audience at large, could regard THE BILLIONAIRE as the 21st century equivalent of classic Hollywood films like My Fair Lady, All About Eve, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, while also appreciating my themes of diversity and inclusion,” Cooray says.

I couldn't possibly muster up an opinion about that horror show of a trailer until he leaks his nudes.

His dick will be the deciding factor.

by Anonymousreply 24March 14, 2021 11:04 PM

I feel like this could be the West 40s of 2021.

by Anonymousreply 25March 15, 2021 12:15 AM

OMG, has anyone checked Mark Sam Rosenthal's purchase history for shoe polish???

by Anonymousreply 26March 15, 2021 2:02 AM

South Asians will go through any lengths to get a whiff of white dick...even spend millions writing and producing their own projects.

by Anonymousreply 27March 15, 2021 2:25 AM

I can’t even come up with words to describe the feelings that trailer stirred up in me. Despair, perhaps.

by Anonymousreply 28March 15, 2021 2:35 AM

The lead reminds me of C. Thomas Howell's character from Soul Man

I can confirm r27 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 30March 15, 2021 2:51 AM

I don't understand. How can he be gay and asexual?

Where can I watch this in full?

by Anonymousreply 31March 15, 2021 3:04 AM

India has declared him an Untouchable.

by Anonymousreply 32March 15, 2021 3:39 AM

[quote] India has declared him an Untouchable.

So has WeHo.

by Anonymousreply 33March 15, 2021 5:41 AM

OP/ r17, do you know any way we could view this movie? I think it has the makings of the ultimate DL classic.

In fact, we should organize a virtual DL viewing party, with live commentary on its own thread. It will be a must-see, and part of the DL entry exam for newcomers.

by Anonymousreply 34March 15, 2021 8:45 AM

I agree with R34. A watch party with Prosecco and compulsory caftans should be a rite of passage.

by Anonymousreply 35March 15, 2021 9:14 AM

I thought Sam Mraovich was Tommy Wiseau of gay-themed movies.

by Anonymousreply 36March 15, 2021 9:35 AM

omg was there ever a more un woke movie than Soul Man? i wanna see it now !!! and often!!!

by Anonymousreply 37March 15, 2021 9:53 AM

[quote]I thought Sam Mraovich was Tommy Wiseau of gay-themed movies.

Yes. This looks bad, but not Ben & Arthur bad.

For starters, it looks competently filmed, no matter how bad the acting is.

by Anonymousreply 38March 15, 2021 10:15 AM

It looks like shit.

by Anonymousreply 39March 15, 2021 10:23 AM

[quote] For starters, it looks competently filmed, no matter how bad the acting is.

It's not.

by Anonymousreply 40March 15, 2021 7:33 PM

It looks like it was filmed with professional equipment and on actual locations.

Ben and Arthur was shot on videotape, and had some sets that were literally made of cardboard.

I can't wait for a blu-ray of this!

by Anonymousreply 42March 16, 2021 11:22 AM

Fuck, I feel like this is what it would look like if I tried to star in a film

by Anonymousreply 43March 17, 2021 12:41 PM

The acting reminds me of the trans performers on Pose. Very bad and camp

by Anonymousreply 44March 17, 2021 1:11 PM

Trannys are so busy pretending to be the opposite sex (badly), they have no more to play an actual character.

by Anonymousreply 45March 17, 2021 10:41 PM

Did anything happen with this movie? I still desperately want to see it.

by Anonymousreply 46April 19, 2022 1:17 PM

Who's the bearded hottie in the cap?

by Anonymousreply 47April 19, 2022 2:51 PM

Could it be intentional camp?
