NFL player Julian Edelman sends open letter to Meyers Leonard who called a fellow player a "K***": 'Hate is like a virus'

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman reached out to Miami Heat center Meyers Leonard after Leonard used an anti-Semitic slur Tuesday.

In an open letter, Edelman explained why Meyers' language is dangerous and hurtful. Edelman also invited Meyers to a Shabbat dinner the next time Edelman is in Miami.

Edelman's letter read:

[quote] "An open letter to Meyers Leonard

[quote] "So we've never met, I hope we can one day soon. I'm sure you've been getting lots of criticism for what you said. Not trying to add to that, I just want to offer some perspective.

[quote] "I get the sense that you didn't use that word out of hate, more out of ignorance. Most likely, you weren't trying to hurt anyone or even profile Jews in your comment. That's what makes it so destructive. When someone intends to be hateful, it's usually met with great resistance. Casual ignorance is harder to combat and has greater reach, especially when you command great influence. Hate is like a virus. Even accidentally, it can rapidly spread.

[quote] "I'm down in Miami fairly often. Let's do a Shabbat dinner with some friends I'll show you a fun time.

[quote] "JE"

Edelman did a similar thing when Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson posted an anti-Semitic message on social media. Edelman denounced anti-Semitism, and invited Jackson to visit the Holocaust Museum. Meyers Leonard will stay away from Heat indefinitely

The Heat released a statement Tuesday, saying Leonard would be away from the team while the NBA investigates the incident. Leonard used an anti-Semitic slur directed at Jewish people while appearing on a live stream on his Twitch channel.

Leonard later released a statement saying he did not know what the word meant.

The NBA is in the process of gathering information. While it does so, Leonard will be away from the Heat. In the team's statement, the Heat said it "vehemently condemns the use of any form of hate speech." The team called Leonard's speech "disappointing and hurtful."

That apology directly apologized to Jewish people. I like that. When people use gay slurs, they jus say “I apologize to those I offended”.

by Anonymousreply 6March 10, 2021 7:54 PM

Not sure what to think.

The "K-word" is an old-timey slur, sort of like the "D-word" for Italians and the "S-word" for Latinos.

People under 40 have their own special slur words for various ethnic groups.

He seems smart enough to have figured out what it meant but also smart enough to realize he should not be saying it out loud on camera.

Despite having a name more likely to put him on the Newton South tennis team than the New England Patriots, Edelman is actually a convert of sorts to Judaism

From Wikipedia:

[quote] Edelman's paternal great-grandfather, Harry Edelman, was Jewish; after emigrating from Poland to England, he married Mabel Hennessey, a woman of Irish Catholic background, Julian's great-grandmother.[153][154][155] As an adult, Edelman has experienced what he described as a "Jewish awakening."[156] During an NFL Network interview in December 2013, Edelman stated that he identifies as Jewish and celebrates Hanukkah; he has become "more attuned to the religion and history."[7] In 2014 he wore an Israeli-American flag pin on his hat during a game against the Denver Broncos at Gillette Stadium.[157][158] He also voiced support for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting: he wore an Israeli flag hat following the Patriots' win against the Green Bay Packers on November 4, 2018,[159] and wore a pair of customized cleats bearing the hashtag #strongerthanhate in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 16, 2018.[160] Edelman shared a photo of the cleats on Instagram and listed the names of all the victims in the photo's caption.[161]

What the fuck is there to investigate?

The pause before he came out with the K word was telling. It was like he was flipping through his options of slurs. And the pause afterwards showed he knew he fucked up - so let's have none of this "he didn't know what it meant" stuff.

Some small town people are so stupid and isolated that they don’t know what the word means. My partner is from a town of 500 people in the Midwest. We are both now in our late 40’s, but we moved in together 18 years ago. We went to buy furniture, and he asked for a discount because we were buying so much. He said something like “I’m not trying to kike you” to the salesperson. The salesperson’s face turned red with anger. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. I left screaming and swearing at him. I called him redneck trash...I was really mean in retrospect. He had tears in his eyes. He honestly didn’t know that it was a racial slur.

by Anonymousreply 36March 11, 2021 3:26 AM

r16 exactly. The one thing I hate the most about think pieces and responses to these kinds of incidents is the idea that the person who screwed up is 'ignorant' and they need to be 'educated'. No. They knew exactly what they were doing and that it was wrong.

R29.... YES, Edelman allegedly has a drinking issue and he's also a big ole himbo/male whore...sleeping with anything that moves, infamously caught passed out after sex with a girl (a average looking girl i might add!) for a 1 night stand and who posted photos of him in her bed with the capture "just fucked edelman,no lie!".... got another woman he barely knew pregnant and now is a father to that child, don't think he's with that woman, just co-parenting with her....

and also busted for using steroids and was banned for a short time before allowed to play..so basically, GREAT football player, NOT so great moral human being....

Nov 1, 2011

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was arraigned on one count of indecent assault and battery Tuesday after being charged with groping a woman at a Halloween party at a Boston bar.

Edelman appeared in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday, and a plea of not guilty was entered upon his behalf. He was released without bail and ordered to stay away from the Back Bay bar Storyville and to have no contact with the alleged victim or witnesses. Edelman is scheduled to return to court Jan. 10.

A Boston police report indicates that Edelman was arrested just after 1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. Assistant District Attorney Susan Terrey told the court that he "indecently groped" a woman at the bar.

A witness who was with the woman said he observed Edelman bump into her and then saw her face "change into an expression of shock," the complaint said. The woman and the witness told police they approached nightclub staff and asked to have Edelman thrown out.

The staff "ejected the witness followed by the victim," the complaint said.

The nightclub manager told police the witness was threatening to beat up Edelman on the dance floor.

Edelman was arrested outside the club, where he denied to police that he groped the woman.

Edelman did not say anything during the court appearance, which lasted just a couple of minutes. He and his attorney, Amy McNamee, walked through a crowd of reporters outside the courtroom without addressing them.

JANUARY 12, 2020

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was arrested Saturday night and charged with misdemeanor vandalism after allegedly jumping on the hood of a car in Beverly Hills, California.

TMZ Sports reported the news Sunday and noted law enforcement sources said it was "apparent to them Julian had been drinking".

Jew hatred: Acceptable, funny, and sometimes even hilarious (see SNL for example), rationalized (well, he's not really a Jew JEW), justified (with yet more anti-Jewish scree). What it isn't is rejected and condemned. And it must be. Just like slurs against Blacks, Muslims and gays are rejected and condemned. But as long as Jew hatred remains entrenched, acceptable and rewarded in society, it never will be. And you all remain Jew-hating turds.

I remember visiting the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam when I first went to the Netherlands, not knowing that the Dutch work for "look" is "kijk" (pronounced exactly the same way). Having a young child next to you yelling "kijk mama kijk....kijk...kijk!" at everything they see in there can be a bit offputting at first.

by Anonymousreply 54March 11, 2021 8:41 AM

Will the Patriots be changing their name to distance themselves from the insurrectionists?

by Anonymousreply 55March 11, 2021 1:24 PM

Fire him, blacklist him, and lynch him. If he were black, you would’ve already called for his lynching along with a bunch of other racial slurs.

by Anonymousreply 56March 11, 2021 1:49 PM

[quote] Just like slurs against Blacks, Muslims and gays

I’m tired of seeing gays tied to blacks and Muslims. Those two groups loathe gays.

by Anonymousreply 57March 11, 2021 1:56 PM

If it wasn't for Jews there would still be sodomy laws.

by Anonymousreply 58March 11, 2021 2:00 PM

R57 They are "tied together" because of the concerted social/cultural inculcation and political efforts to eradicate bigotry and racism towards Blacks, Muslims and gays. The same social/cultural inculcation, that effort to eradicate Jew hatred, doesn't exist. While media and political leaders band together in outrage to defend Blacks, Muslims or gays, that same groundswell of defense and protection towards Jews is muted to non-existent. Quite the opposite. Slurs and scree that would be called out, condemned and rejected if Blacks, Muslims or gays were targeted suddenly become fodder for discussion, justification, rationalization, shoulder-shrugging disinterest and even head-shaking agreement when Jews are targeted. Reiterated by Edelman's need to address an "Open Letter" to Leonard.

Now imagine how very different the scene and reaction would be if a White player had called a Black player Nigger. No "Open Letters" required.

by Anonymousreply 59March 11, 2021 2:29 PM

I’m surprised someone his age even knows that slur. As someone pointed out, it’s pretty old. It’s like dago and a few others. It’s sad that people still bash Jews.

[quote] While media and political leaders band together in outrage to defend Blacks, Muslims or gays, that same groundswell of defense and protection towards Jews is muted to non-existent.

There’s this belief that Jews are white and privileged. I came across a great article about this recently. It made a lot of sense, at least in context of today’s modern woke world where there’s a hierarchy when it comes to oppression.

by Anonymousreply 61March 11, 2021 3:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 64March 11, 2021 4:36 PM

I had the same reaction R63. It seems like such an old-timey slur.

by Anonymousreply 65March 11, 2021 4:44 PM

It is a bizarrely old-fashioned choice of slur, and one originally used by American Jews against the masses of Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century. You don’t even hear it movies/TV/music anymore, perhaps he heard it from older relatives when he was a kid? Or maybe he really likes the movie School Ties? In any case he blurted it out while playing a video game, it’s not like he pulled a Mark Wahlberg and went up a jew on the street and started mercilessly beating him. It’s grotesque and should be condemned, but when will collectively stop acting like these dumb, outmoded slurs cause so much pain?

by Anonymousreply 66March 11, 2021 4:44 PM

Jews in America are white and privileged. But we know that can change if antisemitism isn’t challenged.

"NBA issues Meyers Leonard $50K fine, one-week suspension for anti-Semitic slur"

Meyers Leonard was fined $50,000 and suspended from all Miami Heat team facilities and activities for one week after using an anti-Semitic remark, the NBA announced Wednesday. A video surfaced on Tuesday of Leonard playing "Call of Duty" and using the slur while talking to another player.

[quote] "Meyers Leonard's comment was inexcusable and hurtful and such an offensive term has no place in the NBA or in our society," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "Yesterday, he spoke to representatives of the Anti-Defamation League to better understand the impact of his words and we accept that he is genuinely remorseful. We have further communicated to Meyers that derogatory comments like this will not be tolerated and that he will be expected to uphold the core values of our league — equality, tolerance, inclusion and respect — at all times moving forward."

The Heat banned the Leonard "indefinitely" after the video surfaced on Tuesday, saying it "vehemently condemns the use of any form of hate speech." The nine-year veteran was already out for the season with a shoulder injury. Twitch, the streaming platform he was on, also banned the back-up center.

Leonard issued an apology Tuesday afternoon and claimed he didn't know what the slur meant when he used it.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and veterans Udonis Haslem and Andre Iguodala all denounced Leonard's use of the slur on Wednesday.

Spoelstra said Leonard "has been a really good teammate, he's a human being" but emphasized that the use of the slur was "extremely distasteful and hurtful." He said the team is "left with the aftermath of that" and does not condone its use.

Haslem cited his Jewish friends in his apology and said he's reached out to them.

[quote] From the bottom of my heart and this organization, we apologize. That won't be tolerated here. We're going to be on the right side of these things moving forward. I felt it. I have a lot of Jewish friends. They call me Udonis Haslem-berg sometimes, so I felt it. I reached out to a couple of them after that happened, just to see how they were feeling and to make sure they were OK and just let them know that we don't condone that and that won't be tolerated here and they can continue to just be confident that those type of things don't happen around here in this locker room.

And Iguodala noted that "people have to be held accountable for their actions" and it's up to Leonard to "right the wrong" and educate himself on the history of it.

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman issued an open letter to Leonard on Wednesday and explained why the language was so dangerous and hurtful. He invited Leonard to a Shabbat dinner when they're both in Miami.
