I loved them.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 8, 2021 8:52 PM |
Glad Day bookstore in Boston in the 80's. It was Mecca for the gays!,
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 8, 2021 8:53 PM |
I used to get mine in adult bookstores. I was cheap so I would buy maybe one new one and get the three packs they would bundle up of what was left over.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 8, 2021 8:55 PM |
As a size queen, I admit it, I liked Inches.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 8, 2021 8:57 PM |
I would get so nervous, even in my 20s, going to a magazine store.
I do remember being 16 and parking blocks from an adult bookstore and buying two magazines, which I must have jerked off to 1000 times. Funny, my husband looks like one of the guys in that first magazine.
And honestly, these mags saved my life.

R7 Papi!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 8, 2021 9:03 PM |
I loved getting three for $10!
I’d hid them in my closet and take them out to jerk off
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 8, 2021 9:06 PM |
I cut a hole in my box spring to hide my porn stash.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 8, 2021 9:14 PM |
My first one was a Blueboy with Tony Bravo on the cover. I must have spent hundreds and hundreds on them over the years. I loved Latin Inches and Rump. I also still have all my Colt Studios magazines, which were kind of expensive, but worth it. I sold some of them years ago on Ebay and made quite a pretty penny!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 8, 2021 9:15 PM |
Stroke was the best.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 8, 2021 9:16 PM |
I’m Canadian. I always preferred magazines to videos. I was what can politely be referred to as gay spank-rag “aficionado”. In Touch, Blueboy, Mandate, Torso, Advocate Men, Inches- you name it, I got my grubby, little paws on it back in the day. I hid them mostly in boxes under my bed and the back of the closet .To call me a masturbation addict is an understatement and Casey Donovan, Johnny Harden, Kurt Marshall, Bill Henson and Joey Stefano were my gods. However, these magazines were also a lifeline to a culture that was largely denied me in the ways that would have been healthier. Such was the life of a gayling of the 70s and 80s.
If you’re going to talk about gay porn magazines of the time, you need to do a shout-out to that gateway drug Playgirl Magazine. Just saying.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 8, 2021 9:27 PM |
I had a ton of them when I was in high school. When I went away to college, I threw them away so my parents would never find them
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 8, 2021 9:33 PM |
SkinFlicks was the best. The first issue I ever bought had Neil Thomas and Doug Niles on the cover, from "All Night Long". I fantasized about both of them (especially Doug) for years.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 8, 2021 9:36 PM |
Is Playgirl gay ?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 8, 2021 9:36 PM |
R16 Probably the most extreme example in magazine publishing history of a product that was marketed to women being primarily purchased by men.
In many of the smaller, less cosmopolitan areas of North America, in the smaller towns and cities, you couldn’t get the gay magazines. But you could get Playgirl if you were lucky. It was your only chance to purchase something with nekkid men in it. It’s impact on gay culture shouldn’t be underestimated IMHO.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 8, 2021 9:48 PM |
After Dark
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 8, 2021 9:48 PM |
I picked up Blueboy, Torso and Mandate when I had a chance. But, I enjoyed the men in Playgirl so much more. They were the everyday Joes who had their "fifteen minutes of fame" when the monthly issues were released.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 8, 2021 9:58 PM |
R20 See I liked them both for different reasons. I craved the gay magazines because Playgirl, especially in the early days, wasn’t showing erect cock and never spread butthole. I needed that too.
But I also liked Playgirl for the same reasons you stated, when I was in a mood for something more genteel and mainstream. I remained loyal to Playgirl even after I later had access to the gay rags. I especially loved the celebrity layouts like Fabian, George Maharis, Jim Brown, Steve Bond, Sam J Jones and Christopher Atkins. You didn’t see celeb meat in Blueboy that’s for sure!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 8, 2021 10:10 PM |
I subscribed to Black Inches and Advocate Men.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 9, 2021 2:08 AM |
It would be great if an online magazine featured nude pics of a celebrity every month, as Playgirl did in its first year. I imagine there is a full stable full of reality stars (from Survivor, Big Brother, Amazing Race, Siesta Key, Floribama, etc...), retired athletes and well-known musicians willing to show it all, like "Love and Hip Hop"s Milan Christopher did in Paper online magazine several years ago.
There was a Brazilian magazine called "G" which was in print almost two decades, showing full-frontal spreads of well-known Brazilian athletes, Big Brother contestants, actors, dancers, singers. They each had a full erection on at least one of the pictures. Just google "g magazine nude" in your browser, you'll see.
A little off target for the thread, but this is what I would want to see in a male skin magazine.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 9, 2021 2:47 AM |
Stroke was the best. I also liked Jock, Honcho, Mandate, and Drummer
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 9, 2021 3:20 AM |
I loved Inches, Honcho and Mandate. Men and Playgirl were OK but sometimes the men were too pretty. Same with Torso - OK if you were a muscle fan but often the dick was not centerfold worthy, in my eyes.
The name of the magazine that focused on younger guys escapes me, but I didn't like that one as much, either.
I liked Handjobs until some of the content/illustrations got *real* weird.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 9, 2021 10:27 PM |
Honcho Mandate. I liked th stories.
I also liked Uncut and FQ (Foreskin Quarterly)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 9, 2021 10:34 PM |
Was it "Freshmen", R25?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 9, 2021 10:54 PM |
R27 Yes, that's the one!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 9, 2021 10:55 PM |
I also have to say I didn't always like Black Inches.
I'm attracted to men of color, no doubt about it - the entire package. But Black Inches of course focused on the hugest of the huge....and a lot of those guys may have had THE dick, but damn if they didn't look like a dog's ass otherwise. A face only a mother could love, or some seriously ashy ass skin, too.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 9, 2021 10:58 PM |
If I recall, following "After Dark, "Mandate" was one of the earliest, then "Honcho." But I liked them all. I would endlessly browse through through as many as I could at Paperback Booksmith in Kenmore Square in Boston. The bodega bookstore in Harvard Square carried Foreskin Quarterly which being intact gave me a boner while I browsed.
Then eventually at Glad Day Books in Copley Square/Boston, which was a big, fabulous place with all sorts of gay literature, porn and legit books. Once Glad Day moved to the South End, it was harder to browse since the place was much smaller and the staff could see everything you were reading. Sadly Glad Day is gone.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 9, 2021 11:17 PM |
Blackdogue. net has dozens of pictorials from Playgirl.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 9, 2021 11:29 PM |
Unabridged in Chicago is the last in a long line of places that were respectable bookstores that carried porn mags.
RIP to many others....I remember St. Elmo's in Pittsburgh and a nice store in the short north of Columbus (name escapes me)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 10, 2021 12:38 AM |
I loved Rex Morgan, who is the porn star in OP's photo.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 10, 2021 12:57 AM |
I was always wary going into an Adult Bookstore, mainly because I was wondering if I would see any co-workers. At two bookstores the clerks got to know me, the one store was a regular used/ current novels store but had a bin with all the gay magazines behind one of the counters which they gave me access. Those were the days, and next to the bookstore was the record store selling the latest 45's, albums.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 10, 2021 1:06 AM |
Anybody know who the man on OP's magazine cover is?
He was gorgeous.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 10, 2021 1:26 AM |
Manshots was the gay porn magazine I bought the most frequent because it covered porn stars and porn movies. Any other gay magazines I bought had to do whether I really liked the cover model.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 10, 2021 1:29 AM |
R36 He's Buck Hayes. More of this hunk in the link.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 10, 2021 1:35 AM |
Surely if done right and using smart tactics there is still a market for these type of magazines?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 10, 2021 1:37 AM |
Thanks R38. He's really handsome/sexy. Lord knows how old he would be now but he was very hot then.
Apparently he is also known as Rex Morgan. I found a torrent pack to download.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 10, 2021 2:04 AM |
For a long time you got great pics in the separate Classified mag that came in a bundle with the Advocate. I enjoyed the picture mags, but I liked reading stories more, so I subscribed to FirstHand and its various offshoots.
I'm afraid I can't agree with the poster above who suggested there is still a market for this stuff. There are so, so many hot pics you can find for free online -along with pron videos and even stories. Older guys like me might still enjoy getting skin/stroke mags through the mail, but the younger guys prefer to get it on their phones/devices.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 10, 2021 2:59 AM |
I think there'll always be a niche market for the retro nostalgia entertainment these magazines provide.
Until a massive solar flare deletes our digital world for good. Then these magazines will be more worth than gold in the post apocalypse gay world.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 10, 2021 3:09 AM |
Bought my first Blueboy at 16 years old, nervous as fuck. Hard as a rock all the way home, and jerked off six times within a day. The coverboy was named Ty, a smooth blond jock with a pink hole that I must have blown at least a 55-gallon drum of cum over. I wish I'd kept that magazine, but like R14, threw it and a couple others I bought later away when I moved to college and didn't want my mother to find.
Found out a friend had been a clerk in a newstand-style magazine shop, and when I told him this story he laughed and said the guy who sold it to me probably knew I was underage but didn't care because the young ones are the only ones who pay the cover price and don't just grab the plastic-wrapped remainders.

Circus of Books on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. The first time I went in was 1988 when I was a struggling college student, and I had to circle the block and walk by nervously a dozen times before I walked in. I still have the first mag I bought. I forget the title. I have it along with a collection of Colt mags and calendars in a box in my storage unit in the parking garage.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 10, 2021 5:49 AM |
I used to buy them in adult bookstores. They came in packs of 3, for like 3 or 4 dollars. A well known one like Mandate would be on top and the rest was your luck of the draw. Some of these were quite interesting too.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 10, 2021 6:01 AM |
R41 - Rex/Buck was gorgeous, but Jim French said he was the only model he had who actually took drugs during the photo shoot.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 10, 2021 4:07 PM |
I liked Studflix, which later turned into Skinflicks. Stroke was really hardcore, loved it and also Honcho, Mandate and anything Colt. In DC, the tamer ones could be found at Lambda Rising Bookstore, but the hardcore stuff at Plain Brown Wrapper, LeSalon and the 14th Street porno district stores.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 10, 2021 9:14 PM |
R48!theres an interesting documentary on Circus of Books on Netflix. Straight Jewish owners. Made by their daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 10, 2021 10:14 PM |
In one of his retrospectives, Rip Colt also said Buck Hayes dropped off the face of the earth and he couldn't get in touch with him anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 2, 2022 10:51 PM |
Stroke was the best.
Honcho, Mandate, Torso, Jock, Advocate Men, Freshmen... They were all great back in the day.
I first bought at A Different Drummer bookstore on Capitol Hill in Seattle, later at The Crypt on First Hill

And Margaret Cho's parents had a bookstore/shop that sold gay porno mags, too. (Among other things)

Several times I bought a gay porno magazine in a regular newspaper/magazine shop only to have the clerk behind the counter give me a dirty look. Did they think women were going to buy them?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 3, 2022 2:35 AM |
My favorite was Inches, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 3, 2022 2:43 AM |
Blueboy was erotic rather than porny. The color-coordinated typography and layouts were very tasteful.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 3, 2022 2:52 AM |
Torso and Inches were both great.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 3, 2022 3:26 AM |
As a gayling I shoplifted this copy of Blueboy because I was so in love with this cover photo.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 3, 2022 3:49 AM |
The three I usually bought on their own were Inches, Honcho and Mandate.
I was a cheap whore in my salad days so I also would buy those multipacks in adult bookstores - usually 3 magazines wrapped together. Men or Freshmen would always be in those, but I wasn't always as into those ones.....too many pretty boys for my taste!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 3, 2022 3:59 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 3, 2022 4:35 AM |
My favorites were Blueboy, Numbers, Latino Fan Club, & the Adam Gay Video Directory that came out once a year. I bought them at the Booksellers, a fairly major chain here. They closed one of their branches & the nice elderly lady clerk told me the other location would still be open & also had the magazines (I bought regular books there as well).
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 3, 2022 4:42 AM |
I remember as a teenager in the 90s sneaking Playgirl into the middle of a larger magazine, like Rolling stone, at the Borders bookstore in the mall. Somehow never got caught! That was the only naked man magazine they had in my nowhere area
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 3, 2022 4:48 AM |
I remember going to my first adult bookstore in the Old Town neighborhood of Pasadena, CA. (Right before it gentrified and looked like Westwood). Sonny Calvert of Advocate Men, was my favorite.

You could buy them at "the dirty bookstore".

by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 3, 2022 9:35 AM |
I agree, R75, and the models' photographs featured out and proud erections, legs spread and look to the sky. Some must have been close to shooting their loads. Even the Brazilian celebrities did this.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 3, 2022 8:49 PM |
G Magazine was very erotic. Their movies had lousy music and editing but their men were very erotic.

I was very drawn to the Bound & Gagged magazines, but they were exorbitantly expensive. Later though I had a boyfriend who had a collection I perused throughly. One thing I noticed, circa 2000, was there was no penetration, oral or anal, while the person was in bondage. Were there laws about showing people in those positions being violated and thus it being questionable if they were doing it of there own volition and thus restricted? Maybe not federally, but maybe certain states, countries or regions that they were reluctant to do that and being prosecuted there?
by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 5, 2022 3:02 PM |
Remember the English porn magazines like Him, and was it HQ? And then there were the semi-porn teen mags like XY, which was huge for a while, and Gayme. They weren't my thing, so I only have vague memories of them, but I'm not sure whether they showed cock.
