Central Park West

Starring Mariel Hemingway as Stephanie Wells. Created by Darren Star and Aaron Spelling. Out of Spelling's three 90s non-hits -- Models Inc, Central Park West, and Pacific Palisades, C.P.W (as it was later abbreviated) was the best of the three. It was one of the most hyped shows of the mid-nineties but was not a success.

It had a great cast, fantastic music, and lots of spicy sex. Also, 90s NYC never looked so chic. But as early as episode 6 the tinkering started, and by the lackluster season 2 even the "Special Big Guest Star" could not save the show.

WHET to Kylie Travis? She was great on Models Inc and I loved her in CPW.

I loved that show! At one point it had an insanely stacked cast...Mariel Hemingway, Madchen Amick, Lauren Hutton, Raquel Welch, Gerald McRaney, Amanda Peet, John Barrowman (at his hottest)...

Did Spelling have his paws in 'CPW'? I thought it was Darren Star's venture on his own.

CPW was fantastic. It got better once Raquel Welch joined.

I absolutely loved it! Mädchen Amick was gorgeous and I had a huge crush on Justin Lazard. NYC really did look amazing and I was really young at the time, so I had little understanding of how privileged the various characters were and viewed how they lived their lives as aspirational(and ultimately attainable), but they really jumped the shark in the second series when Peter Fairchild (John Barrowman) murdered his bride and then fled to South America . Still of all the shows OP listed it was the only one to have a second series, so yeah, it was the best!

R3 You are right. It's Darren Starr on his own taking all the elements of BH 90210 and Melrose Place, and relocating to the upper west side.

The original opening trying to be a bit more "high concept" than a Spelling show. I think part of the problem was the cast, they literally threw just about everything in, hoping that something would stick.

Mädchen Amick is amazing and absolutely steals the show as Carrie Fairchild. I love her bratty petulant character. She's like the goth version of Fallon from Dynasty.

Anyone catch Justin Thereoux cameo as a Carrie's flamboyant gay friend at the staff meeting in episode 1?

That other (much more famous) Australian Kylie was offered a big role on CPW, which she turned down.

Thanks r10, I had no idea

Aaron Spelling had his own sudsy drama series SAVANNAH in 1996, which despite being classier and a ratings winner for CW, only lasted two seasons.

I seem to remember reading an interview around the time of mallrats where Shannen Doherty claimed she had been offered a role on this show but turned it down as it was pretty soon after she’d left 90210.

Was Diane Keaton involved with the creation of Pacific Palisades or was that Pasadena? I think it was supposed to premier right around September 11th but didn’t.

Speaking of Shannen Doherty, she also turned down a part in Savannah; the Miami Herald at the time said that Aaron Spelling was “so hot to get former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty for his new soap, “Savannah,” he even offered her a $100,000 per-episode salary. Her response: No soap.”
