The turning point of Melrose Place

When Melrose went from good to bad.

It started off boring and then it got fun and then it got horrible and I only watched for Kimberly's and Sydney's crazy antics and for Michael Mancini's boobies.

I remember when Jo killed her hot guy attacker on a boat with a harpoon and I laughed out loud. I just looked it up and that was only season two. Seemed like a major late-in-the-series jump-the-shark moment.

Billy and Allison always annoyed me. She looks like a cavewoman and he looks and speaks like he's slow.

Somewhere along the lines of Jo’s adopted child storyline.

by Anonymousreply 2March 5, 2021 9:44 PM

Or rather when Melrose went from BORING to AMAZING.

by Anonymousreply 3March 5, 2021 10:01 PM

I'd trade every NCIS, CSI, Law & Order, Black/Mixed/White/Dumb-ish for one more season of Melrose Place.

by Anonymousreply 4March 5, 2021 10:10 PM

Kimberly (Marcia Cross) ripping off her wig was iconic and THE defining moment of Melrose imo. Yes this is “MARY” but I did shriek.the first time I saw it. So unexpected and awesome

I was really invested in Matt (Doug Savant) which was very frustrating because he was given so little to do. Thirty years ago there was so little gay representation in prime time and here you had a young, kind, gorgeous guy.

Aaron Spelling once commented how he’d imagined this very rosy picture far off in the future when talking about the character. This is why it infuriated me when he was killed off. It wasn’t even an onscreen death, adding insult to injury. The show went really went downhill for me after that, especially because a number of series regulars left, too.

After the apartment blew up

by Anonymousreply 7March 5, 2021 11:14 PM

Which one of them said they knew the studio really believed in the show because they built a real swimming pool?

by Anonymousreply 8March 5, 2021 11:16 PM

The height of Melrose Place was when Kimberly ran out and said, “Wait, it’s not as bad as it looks...it’s worse!” before blowing everything up. The following season was downhill from the first episode, and the show only got worse.

by Anonymousreply 9March 5, 2021 11:19 PM

When the terrorist burst into the Moldavian wedding and shot up the place.

by Anonymousreply 10March 5, 2021 11:20 PM

You’ve embarrassed us all Allison.

by Anonymousreply 11March 5, 2021 11:26 PM

In my MFA program, we learned that sometimes when you can't figure out where to take the story...blow something up.

My favorite was when Sidney was kidnapped and forced to wear fabulous clothes!

by Anonymousreply 13March 5, 2021 11:43 PM

Jamie Luner was the best late addition to the cast, but too little too late.

My favorite moment was when Jane had "temporary" quadriplegia and Michael tried to fuck her in the beach house when she couldn't move!

by Anonymousreply 14March 5, 2021 11:51 PM

I'm not sure why, but I really got into this show during college (mid to late 2000s) and bought the entire series on DVD (on sale). I ripped all the episodes and would watch them on my iPod at the gym (MARY!). Never got around to finish watching the entire show, for some reason. I don't think I actually watched seasons 5 to 7.

I've been tempted to dust them off and watch them during the pandemic.

"You bet your butt it was [a hate crime]. I hate you!"

It's on Hulu.

On a random side note, I worked at the Gap in the late 90s (hi, Gap Playlist Guy!) and Marcia Cross came in one day. Even though I loved Melrose Place back in the day, I could not place her, even though I knew I had seen/met her before. I was standing there thinking she was one of my high school teachers or something when we locked eyes and then I remembered THE WIG. THE SCAR. Everything. For a pop culture addict such as myself, it was a low key thrilling moment.

by Anonymousreply 17March 5, 2021 11:55 PM

Trashy, low-class Heather Locklear was NEVER going to be the new Joan Collins. Sorry.

One of the greatest scenes ever

R19 Wow, people had issues with Amanda’s health even back then?

by Anonymousreply 20March 6, 2021 5:26 AM

R19 Is this when she had to marry the unattractive fat man and move to the suburbs and do comedy?

by Anonymousreply 21March 6, 2021 5:27 AM

R19 That had quite a bit of Jan and Marsha tension going on in the scene, it had everything but a “Sure Jan” and a hair flip about it.

“Allegations and Innuendo: The Courtney Thorne-Smith Story.”

by Anonymousreply 23March 6, 2021 5:31 AM

R8, I think it was Laura Leighton.

by Anonymousreply 24March 6, 2021 6:06 AM

I think Kimberly's apartment explosion was also when Alison was a blind alcoholic. Truly a next level performance.

Courtney Thorne Smith and Andrew Shue are two of the luckiest "actors" to ever get a job.

by Anonymousreply 25March 6, 2021 12:56 PM

Courtney Thorne Smith, despite being marginally talented, managed to go from Melrose Place, to Ally McBeal, to 8 seasons on a moderately successful sitcom--According to Jim, to Two and a Half Men.

"You conniving bleach-blonde piece of DIRT!"

by Anonymousreply 27March 6, 2021 6:45 PM

When the brought Cloris Leachman on, to replace Sammy Jo.

by Anonymousreply 28March 6, 2021 6:48 PM

R28 My condolences to Heather Lockleer, at least they didn’t change the name of the show.

by Anonymousreply 29March 6, 2021 6:53 PM

In case you're wondering... Amy Locane is *still* in prison.

Considering Courtney Thorne-Smith's career, it's surprising that Amy Locane couldn't have gone on to be a marginally successful actress. She had Melrose Place, Cry Baby, Blue Sky (ok probably didn't help that it was released 3 years after production), but she had some ok roles. What stalled it?

It jumped the shark when Kimberly blew up the complex in the season 3 finale.

by Anonymousreply 31March 6, 2021 7:24 PM

“Did Kimberly steal Joe’s baby?”

by Anonymousreply 32March 6, 2021 7:40 PM

As R26 pointed out, R30 , Courtney was luckier than most.

by Anonymousreply 33March 6, 2021 8:01 PM

Courtney should have at least received a Golden Globe nomination for her Shakespearean interpretation of sticking her tongue out every time her character has a drink and the soundtrack guitar riffs wildly.

All the greats started on MP.

Doug Savant was so amazing about playing a gay person back in the early 90s. He was so respectful and kind and just normal.

I tried rewatching the show from the beginning during lockdown last year. I made it to mid-season 3 and stopped because it was so stupid. I used to live for this show, but now all I see is how awful it is and how much I hate everyone. I'm content with my memories of the first go-round.

by Anonymousreply 37March 6, 2021 9:05 PM

I still find it better than TV today.

by Anonymousreply 38March 6, 2021 9:09 PM

My friend and I used to play the Melrose Place drinking game.

Courtney Thorne Smith must be really easy to work with and nice there’s no other explanation for her career

by Anonymousreply 40March 6, 2021 9:43 PM

I’ve never made it past the episodes with the insane asylum, where Kimberly was trying to give Peter a lobotomy. It was just a wee bit over the top.

by Anonymousreply 41March 6, 2021 9:56 PM

Jane always seems to be the forgotten Melroser.

by Anonymousreply 42March 6, 2021 10:00 PM

Courtney Thorne-Smith always looked like she had to take a shit.

by Anonymousreply 43March 6, 2021 10:00 PM

Officially it went down after Kim blew up the building.

I’d say the true downfall was writing Kim and Sydney off. Those two made the show pop while Amanda and Michael held it up.

I really did like Lexie as well but by that time most originals were gone and a bunch of basics were in lead roles.

by Anonymousreply 44March 6, 2021 10:09 PM

What is the story behind Doug Savant leaving the show? It seemed like a last minute decision. Didn’t it just happen out of the blue with Doug not even appearing in the episode?

by Anonymousreply 45March 7, 2021 12:22 AM

They show MP on the 90210 channel on Pluto. Luner really gave Smith a run for her money in the acting category.

And Savant...
