kid 90 (Hulu; 2021)

As a teenager in the 90s, Soleil Moon Frye carried a video camera everywhere she went documenting her group of friends as they grew up in Hollywood and New York City. Exclusively on Hulu 3/12.

I guess Soleil was a vlogger before that was even a thing. And why does Mark P-G look so much better here than he did on the SBTB reboot where he looked like a hunk of plastic...?

She had/has remarkable and deep friendships with so many guys that are very genuine.

by Anonymousreply 1March 12, 2021 2:17 PM

Where's Jason Bateman? He was the ultimate teen who dropped out and spent all his child star money on dope and booze.

by Anonymousreply 2March 12, 2021 4:03 PM

R1 They are straight guys. They all about her huge tits before and after her reduction.

by Anonymousreply 3March 12, 2021 7:21 PM

She hung around so many hot guys but the guys she dated were mid.

by Anonymousreply 4March 12, 2021 7:43 PM

Charlie Sheen was her first

by Anonymousreply 5March 12, 2021 7:50 PM

Do they address her tits exploding?

by Anonymousreply 6March 12, 2021 7:55 PM

This was great.

by Anonymousreply 7March 13, 2021 3:33 AM

I wonder what she thinks now about Charlie Sheen and Johnny Depp after crushing on the both of them.

by Anonymousreply 8March 13, 2021 4:08 AM
Where's Jason Bateman? He was the ultimate teen who dropped out and spent all his child star money on dope and booze.

He bounced back and still managed to age well. I wish I could say the same for his contemporaries.

by Anonymousreply 9March 13, 2021 4:25 AM

I see from the trailer she’ll be discussing Jonathan Brandis. His death broke my heart.

by Anonymousreply 10March 13, 2021 4:28 AM

Just finished watching this. Really well done. Highly suggested, especially if you grew up with Punky like I did. I remember all the supermarket tabloid headlines screaming about her giant breasts. She must have been 15-16 then. Such different times.

by Anonymousreply 11March 13, 2021 4:50 AM

Stephen Dorff was so hot back then.

by Anonymousreply 12March 13, 2021 5:01 AM

Stephen Dorff was so fucking cute.

I remember seeing him in a screening of The Power of One.

At some point I caught myself gasping when he appeared on screen.

by Anonymousreply 13March 13, 2021 5:03 AM

I wish they had a project like this done for the teen stars of the 80s. I am too old for these 90s shows/actors to really appreciate this documentary.

by Anonymousreply 14March 13, 2021 5:10 AM

So Soleil’s breasts before the reduction were totally natural? They were huge!

by Anonymousreply 15March 13, 2021 5:13 AM

In OP’s link, who is the kid in the middle?

by Anonymousreply 16March 13, 2021 5:14 AM

r16 Stephen Dorff

by Anonymousreply 17March 13, 2021 5:15 AM

She looked 10 years older before the surgery.

by Anonymousreply 18March 13, 2021 5:24 AM

My friends husband was in this. Soleil really was friends with everyone

by Anonymousreply 19March 13, 2021 5:39 AM

I didn’t understand all the crying or really the whole point she was trying to make, but Punky led an interesting life with a ton of skinny white boy D

by Anonymousreply 20March 13, 2021 5:39 AM

Punky Boobster

by Anonymousreply 21March 13, 2021 5:40 AM

She was such a one hit wonder how did she become so popular?

by Anonymousreply 22March 13, 2021 5:47 AM

R15, that's not real. I've posted the real one before:

by Anonymousreply 23March 13, 2021 5:50 AM

R23 she looks practically flat in the after picture.

by Anonymousreply 24March 13, 2021 6:40 AM

Balthazar Getty is still so gorgeous. He’s the kind of family money well done that Armie could have turned into, but won’t.

by Anonymousreply 25March 13, 2021 6:48 AM

I never cared much about Punky Brewster, but I'm the same age as Soleil & this hits all the nostalgia points. The 90's were magic. I wan't to watch this, but I don't care to sign up for Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 26March 13, 2021 7:54 AM
Stephen Dorff was so hot back then.

Ultimate 90's bad boy. He was so sexy in that Aerosmith video.

by Anonymousreply 27March 13, 2021 8:59 AM

The only thing I remember about Punky Brewster was the one where she gets stuck in a refrigerator while playing hide-n-seek. I must have been 5 when I saw that? Made me a life long claustrophobic.

Fuck you Punky!

by Anonymousreply 28March 13, 2021 9:15 AM

I loved the fact she was fairly unapologetic for any of the behavior in the videos (underage drinking, smoking, drugs, etc.) She realizes it was a time capsule and merely remarks on the friends and their issues that, as a young adult, she simply didn't know or have experience with. It wasn't preachy which it could have easily been. She knew SO many of the young actors from that time; I nearly recognized every one.

by Anonymousreply 29March 13, 2021 9:49 AM

Bateman is older than her crew.

by Anonymousreply 30March 13, 2021 9:58 AM

Did she submit this for Oscar consideration?

by Anonymousreply 31March 13, 2021 10:40 AM

How can I watch this without Hulu?

by Anonymousreply 32March 13, 2021 11:15 AM

R32, I just watched it on Putlocker. I'll try to link here, but just be aware you'll have to "X" out a ton of pop-ups while watching.

It was decent; in the end, it was Soleil's story and she's obviously entitled to tell that since she was the one who shot the video and produced the doc. I tend to agree with Perry Farrell when he said towards the end that she/he/all of us can be as self-indulgent as we want when telling our own story...we can be the hero of our own story if we so choose. So it's hard to fault her for that narrative. The one criticism I had was the inclusion of Charlie Sheen as the one who took her virginity. But again, that's her truth. It's interesting that she got a lot of guys to comment in the present day, but not many of her female friends like Sara Gilbert, Jenny Lewis, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. She was definitely a boys' girl and still is.

I watched her interview with Jimmy Kimmel last week and she said she had something like 200 video tapes to mull through to decide what would make the doc. A daunting task to cull all that down to 72 minutes. So kudos to her for taking the time to do it, and to process all of this. Again, it's her story, and it was her decision to share it with us.

In all the press materials the Jonathan Brandeis stuff was front and center and in the written materials there were details that were not in the film. If his death was mentioned it must have been blink and you missed it as I don’t recall it at all. I really thought it was going to be the emotional center of the documentary.

by Anonymousreply 34March 13, 2021 12:50 PM

What?

by Anonymousreply 35March 13, 2021 1:16 PM

In the OP's picture for the trailer, who's the little guy with the white baseball cap?

He looks familiar but I can't place him.

by Anonymousreply 36March 13, 2021 1:20 PM

R36 Isn’t that BAG? He has the most beautiful hair in some of those shots, I mean he could have put the Beck Girls to shame.

by Anonymousreply 37March 13, 2021 1:23 PM

R36, that's Brian Austin Green.

by Anonymousreply 38March 13, 2021 1:33 PM
If his death was mentioned it must have been blink and you missed it as I don’t recall it at all.

It was quick. It was after the part with her breast reduction as it showed him being one who visited her afterwards. She talks about their friendship and then about people being in pain and you not realizing it then it cut to an article reporting that Brandis killed himself.
The one criticism I had was the inclusion of Charlie Sheen as the one who took her virginity. But again, that's her truth.

What's sad for her is that it was really a special thing to her and the Charlie - or Charles - then is not the crazy Charlie Sheen of recent years and she really cared for him, but now people on Twitter are saying Charlie was a predator and groomed her and how horrible it is that Charlie took advantage of her when that is not Soleil's reality and not how she feels about it.
watched her interview with Jimmy Kimmel last week and she said she had something like 200 video tapes to mull through to decide what would make the doc.

It's funny to me that Leonardo DiCaprio's production company produced the documentary yet he's barely featured in it. As much footage as she has with Kevin Connelly I know there' s more with DiCaprio.

by Anonymousreply 39March 13, 2021 3:13 PM

R30. You are correct. Jason is one year older than her brother Meeno.

by Anonymousreply 40March 13, 2021 3:50 PM

R39 Well her experience with Charles was deeply in contrast with the jerk to ignored her withdrawal of consent and thrust inside her. In comparison Charles was a very sweet romantic figure on which she hangs the true loss of her virginity on. Kind of frightening that Charlie Sheen is the upstanding good guy in this story, who was this other monstrous guy instead? I though it was the lead singer guy O’Connor, but their hanging out at the end belied that. It also seems to imply that maybe they didn’t have sex at all in their relationship? The timeline jumped around a bit, but her being with him seemed to predate her loss of virginity.

by Anonymousreply 41March 13, 2021 4:21 PM

There are so many things I forgot about like Teen Win, Lose or Draw. There's an episode with Soleil vs. Leonardo DiCaprio.

Emmanuel Lewis was born in 1971 and I saw a brief clip of him.

R43 He was still included because he didn’t outgrow the height requirements.

by Anonymousreply 44March 13, 2021 5:22 PM

At least this partly explains why Ricky Schroder married so young. I cried more when he married that Mormon woman than he did at the end of [italic]The Champ[/italic]. That he married a woman was bad enough, but a Mormon? Even so, his post-[italic]Silver Spoons[/italic] movies and TV shows look like the Disney version of gay porn if you can imagine such a thing. No, it's not mice and ducks fucking: it's the intersection of homoerotica and centuries of sexual repression.

by Anonymousreply 45March 13, 2021 5:33 PM

I’m confused how her face is so long and angular - even after losing baby fat.

by Anonymousreply 46March 13, 2021 5:47 PM

There were certain angles where she really looked like Tiffany, the Mall Pop princess singer.

by Anonymousreply 47March 13, 2021 5:50 PM

David Arquette being part of this scene also just proves once again that the Arquette family, who grew up two blocks from Paramount Studios, must have so much Hollywood dirt.

by Anonymousreply 48March 13, 2021 7:48 PM

"...now people on Twitter are saying Charlie was a predator and groomed her and how horrible it is that Charlie took advantage of her when that is not Soleil's reality and not how she feels about it.."

Ask me how I feel about Charlie Sheen...

by Anonymousreply 49March 14, 2021 1:03 PM

I’m guessing she skipped her Lilo Brancato era for legal reasons.

by Anonymousreply 50March 14, 2021 2:42 PM

I didn't know that two of the lead actors in KIDS died

by Anonymousreply 51March 14, 2021 5:44 PM

It was cool seeing so many actors I had forgotten about, like Dana Ashbrook, he looked so good back then.

by Anonymousreply 52March 15, 2021 5:42 AM
like Dana Ashbrook, he looked so good back then.

He looked so very good! He does not look the same at all now. It goes beyond aging. He looks like a completely different person.

by Anonymousreply 53March 15, 2021 7:11 AM

Dana Ashbrook is in his 50s and still looks hot as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 54March 15, 2021 7:28 AM

r47 I loved Tiffany! I bought her cassette tape when I was 11 & would angstily sing along on my walkman.

by Anonymousreply 55March 16, 2021 2:39 AM

If I heard pain one more time, poor little rich kids. Who the hell has 8 friends commit suicide? Never saw a frame of Punky, but some of her older stuff but I might be the only one who liked her before this film, and don't now.

by Anonymousreply 56March 17, 2021 10:42 PM

My takeaway is that she misses being young, fancy free, and surrounded by cute guys who give her a lot of attention.

by Anonymousreply 57March 17, 2021 10:49 PM

I couldn't get through it. I somehow thought it was going to be less about her personally and more about the 90's from the trailer. It was all about her pain and sexual assaults.

by Anonymousreply 58March 17, 2021 11:05 PM

Sexual assault, that one virgin thrust was all I recall? It’s interesting that at least for her it undermined that whole Hollywood pedophile pass around ring, though Cory was briefly there. I thought maybe there might be more of a reveal about Brandeis, that he might have be subjected to that or that he might even have been gay, but there was very little about him for how much he was marketed around the documentary. They seems to have been extremely close and it seems likely he would of shared that with her.

by Anonymousreply 59March 17, 2021 11:15 PM

The lawyers probably had some say about what got included and what didn't.

by Anonymousreply 60March 17, 2021 11:18 PM
My takeaway is that she misses being young, fancy free, and surrounded by cute guys who give her a lot of attention.

Just like the eldergays of DL.

by Anonymousreply 61March 17, 2021 11:19 PM

Was it just the timing, or do you think the information revealed in the documentary lead to her divorce? I meaning finding out your wife lost her virginity to a Charles Sheen may irrecoverably change the way you see them?

by Anonymousreply 62March 17, 2021 11:38 PM

She seemed way too cozy when she reunited with that guy from the hip hop band that I can't remember. He was wearing a wedding ring.

by Anonymousreply 63March 18, 2021 12:09 AM

She was married for 22 years. I'm sure she told him about losing it to Charlie Sheen.
Who the hell has 8 friends commit suicide?

Not all committed suicide in the literal sense. Some were overdoses like Harold Hunter, Rodney Harvey. I don't think it's ever been revealed how Andrew Dorff died.
They seems to have been extremely close and it seems likely he would of shared that with her.

I think she told the only story she could tell. If taking her at her word, she said that there was so much she missed and didn't know how much her friends were suffering. If she does know more she doesn't seem the sort to tell other people's stories for them.

by Anonymousreply 64March 18, 2021 12:12 AM

God so empty and indulgent.

by Anonymousreply 65April 17, 2021 3:04 AM

Female celebrities are thinner now, she would be considered chubby when she was a teen today.

by Anonymousreply 68August 27, 2021 8:02 AM

I would have found her annoying

by Anonymousreply 69August 27, 2021 8:06 AM

Her show ran concurrently with [italic]the Facts of Life[/italic], R68, so even by those days' standards she wouldn't have been that fat. People on a whole are getting fatter but pop culture, save for perhaps [italic]This Is Us[/italic], does not acknowledge this.

by Anonymousreply 70August 27, 2021 8:07 AM

I can see her being the type of woman other women don't like because she is clingy/huggy with guys and wants attention.

by Anonymousreply 71August 27, 2021 8:10 AM

r70 you aren't kidding about Facts Of Life. I haven't seen it in years and was flipping channels and caught it recently and the 4 lead girls were huge. They all wore long blazers and sweaters to cover it up.

by Anonymousreply 72August 27, 2021 8:21 AM

What do you expect when Coca-Cola bought their production company?

by Anonymousreply 73August 27, 2021 8:22 AM

Tracey Gold was pressured about her weight meanwhile the Facts Of Life girls were living large.

by Anonymousreply 74August 27, 2021 8:27 AM

Helen Hunt on Mad About You had a round face and was heavier. Now she is a scarecrow.

by Anonymousreply 75August 27, 2021 8:29 AM

She basically starved herself to death when she wasn't even fat to begin with. That's why [italic]Growing Pains[/italic] wasn't funny.

by Anonymousreply 76August 27, 2021 8:29 AM

I thought Sherilyn Fenn was gorgeous in the Twin Peaks era but she would probably be considered chubby now too.

by Anonymousreply 77August 27, 2021 8:31 AM

I preferred Madonna before she got thin with ropey veined yoga arms.

by Anonymousreply 78August 27, 2021 8:34 AM

Every time I watch something on Hulu they have Castle Rock playing next.

by Anonymousreply 79August 27, 2021 8:35 AM

There wasn’t nearly enough footage of her hanging with Savannah, doing rails of coke and lezzing out.

by Anonymousreply 80August 27, 2021 8:56 AM

Loved that she included stuff with Rodney Harvey , his phone calls to her on her answering machine

I miss Rodney

by Anonymousreply 81August 27, 2021 9:14 AM

r78 I think it was during the Tracy Anderson era that Madonna's body was at its scariest.

by Anonymousreply 82August 27, 2021 10:30 AM
doing rails of coke

I miss the 90's so bad it hurts sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 83August 27, 2021 10:31 AM

I just finished it & thought it was a waste of time.

She comes across as a run of the mill Hollywood egoist (plugging her new reboot at the end was out of place).

I was never a fan of PB but it makes me wonder if she had any AIDS scares after hanging around with Sheen & his crew.

I agree with the poster above, you have 8 "friends" who commit suicide & you say you have "blinders on"? Really?

After the second friend suicided she didn't look into the warning signs at all? Not really good friend material is she?

She hung out with the two Coreys but didn't include Haim in the end tribute? Awkward.

I thought this was more about her Hollywood circle of friends instead of a long episode of "This Is Your Life".

She had the guy celebs in this just to tell them at the end that she was crushing on them back in the day. AWKWARD!!!

My opinion of her has gone from favorable to unfavorable. I haven't had a ton of her images popping up in front of me in the media but this will make up for it & will last a lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 84August 29, 2021 10:04 AM

F list. What channel is the new Punky Brewster on anyway?

by Anonymousreply 85August 29, 2021 10:15 AM

Haha revival cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 86August 29, 2021 10:17 AM

"I wish they had a project like this done for the teen stars of the 80s."

Because we haven't heard enough about the Coreys?
