I can only imagine how attractive some of these men would be without the ridiculous facial hair.
I always think the same thing when I see women my grandmother's age who have those unattractive Golden Girls style hairdos. It seems like they got those by 40 or 50 and kept them until their death. You look at someone like Jane Fonda who's managed to look stylish without making a complete foot of herself and you have to wonder what some of them could have looked like if they didn't decide to prematurely age themselves.

I agree. I just keep wondering if good-looking men were as self-aware of their looks back before media gave them something to compare themselves to. I mean if you lived in a small town before there was movies would you know you were good looking when you only had the few peers in your town for comparison?

R269 Ahem... I really enjoy vintage pics, and have seen a lot of them over the years. It's "rewarding" to see how many pics this guy posts, many or most never seen. Thanks for the research.

R263 Rafael's biography doesn't mean much to me.
[quote] Rafael Eloy Martínez de Jaramillo-Quemado y Pombal, XXIII Marqués de Lajara, title granted to his ancestors by Carlos II in the seventeenth century, was a living without rooms, without liquidity, owner of many wastelands that little rented, and that being linked with good sense, to a Pious Work that he now presided over, they could not be sold.
[quote] Refreshing the blood with the vigor that money gives was not a strategy discovered by Madale, it was something she had done herself. Love counts for nothing in the world of preeminence. Don Braulio also knew it and had experienced it, many times we lie with those we do not love and we love those who are forbidden to reciprocate.
[quote] Syllogisms of ancient lineages, of the logic that gives priority to power over pleasure.

R276, are we sure that this is really a biography and not some historical fanfiction?
I mean, the first part kind of makes sense: An impoverished minor nobleman whose assets bring in little money and cannot be sold because they are tied to a charitable ecclestial foundation.
And then something nonsensical about not marrying for love vs. marrying for money and power, or something.

@r278, I couldn't make any sense of his bio either, all I know is if the Spaniard Rafael lived in current times there would have been no need for Antonio Banderas

R276, I saw that weirdly translated bio as well, but, what I really want to know is what dates he lived. I couldn't find it. Lajara, Spain, looks like it is still a small town.

We may have been had about the Marques. This is my go-to site on noble/royal genealogy and there's no "Lajara" mentioned at all. Nor any "Rafael Eloy". Google searches don't find anything, either.
