A two-night documentary event scheduled for 2022!
Bound to be the most boring documentary ever.

Will they show nipple?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 4, 2021 12:34 PM |
Give me a Latoya documentary, not one on that whispy-voiced blob.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 4, 2021 12:36 PM |
You know LaToya is going to be interviewed, that alone is worth the price of admission.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 4, 2021 12:40 PM |
No interest in a Lifetime documentary on Janet? How her star has fallen!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 4, 2021 1:41 PM |
If it doesn't include the secret baby, slapping the relative, planning to flash boob at the Super Bowl, and hating her user family, count me out.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 4, 2021 2:11 PM |
This actually looks good and like she's going to get real about some of the more thorny parts of her life and career. They're teasing discussion about Michael with her mother and her, but I doubt they're going to make news there. They'll probably keep things vague on that topic.
Looks like she's also addressing her supposed secret 1980s pregnancy.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 2, 2022 2:56 AM |
"on A&E & Lifetime?"
Not even BET is interested in it? well...
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 2, 2022 2:59 AM |
Ugh, no.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 2, 2022 3:02 AM |
They are teasing it as revealing and raw, but you just know it will be as tight and structured as the Jacksons' endless facial surgeries.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 2, 2022 3:06 AM |
Looks like she had the nosejob right after puberty.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 2, 2022 3:08 AM |
R10 - you're probably right. I have low expectations that she'll be real about things like Timberlake or Michael, but perhaps she'll let others featured in the doc articulate things she won't utter herself?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 2, 2022 3:12 AM |
Looks good to me. I dont see why she would hold anything back at this point. Half her contemporaries are gone now, including Michael, and all his kids are adults now. And her mom is way up in years.
I wonder if she'll discuss the Bobby Brown era too lol, gurl messss
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 2, 2022 3:40 AM |
Janet Jackson will appear on the Kelly Clarkson Show Tuesday to promote the doc premiering this weekend
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 24, 2022 11:25 PM |
I remember the time she had Keanu stopping his acceptance speech to comment on her beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 24, 2022 11:45 PM |
She looks like an alien just like Madonna. I would like to watch it. But I know it’s going to be very sugarcoated.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 24, 2022 11:55 PM |
2 hours of her eating Quarter Pounder after Quarter Pounder is just not compelling television.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 25, 2022 12:15 AM |
^You tried, but it wasn’t even remotely funny.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 25, 2022 12:29 AM |
She's not fat anymore, so why the fat jokes?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 26, 2022 12:37 AM |
Fat jokes are always funny!

Michael Jackson was first accused of child sex abuse in 1993. His sister says she was upset at the personal cost to her.
"It was frustrating for me," she says. "We have our own separate lives and even though he's my brother, that has nothing to do with me.
"But I wanted to be there for him, to support him as much as I possibly could."
Janet has also claimed that after Michael paid a settlement pay-out to the family of 13-year-old Jordan Chandler, who alleged the singer molested him at his Neverland ranch in California, she lost out on a big deal with Coca-Cola.
"When that came out, Coca-Cola said, 'No, thank you.' Guilty by association. That's what they call it, right?" she says.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 26, 2022 12:45 AM |
Jody Watley is such an underdog. Better singer than Madonna, Janet and Paula yet faded away.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 26, 2022 12:47 AM |
To be honest. Janet's story in the 70s and 80s is interesting. Former child star and teen idol then fought against her controlling father, married and annulled a Debarge, got knocked up and gave the kid up for adoption, went off to Minneapolis to work with (fuck) Prince ended up rejected (P hated MJ and tried La Toya and thought she was weird) and later came across Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who just got fired from P's band and their Vanity album got shelved. And Control was born.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 26, 2022 12:53 AM |
I do think Janet's career was a mix of nepotism and luck. While Madonna was just pure luck and fucking for tracks. Whitney's was pure talent (yeah nepotism but she actually could sing).
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 26, 2022 12:56 AM |
And I doubt she was fucking Bobby Brown or 2pac. Madonna was fucking them though. Jacksons don't fuck anyone darker than a paper bag. Whitney got accused of being "white" yet she loved dark-skinned men.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 26, 2022 1:00 AM |
Jody Watley was also Voguing in her videos long before the other one jumped on the bandwagon.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 26, 2022 1:03 AM |
Two black men she's fucked (Q-tip and Jermaine Durpi) are in the doc. Dupri is no one's definition of "lightskin" or even "brownskin" Why would she fuck Tupac when she's a married man. Also, who hasn't Madonna fucked? You say it like it's a badge of honor.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 26, 2022 1:04 AM |
r26 she was definitely fucking Bobby Brown. The Jacksons just didn't date other black people in public in the 80s and 90s, but behind closed doors is a different story. Janet had just married Rene shortly before Poetic Justice came around so she was not fucking Tupac.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 26, 2022 1:08 AM |
Did Janet have any opinions on Whitney? Michael and Jermaine both seemed to adore her. Jermaine did duets with her. And Michael seemed fond of her (not that way as he doesn't like girls) because she probably was sweet to him unlike Vadge.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 26, 2022 1:09 AM |
It’ll air on WETV or Lifetime
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 26, 2022 1:09 AM |
They should just air it on COZI
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 26, 2022 1:10 AM |
Jermaine Dupri ruined Janet's career worse than the Super Bowl. The albums she made with her mediocre and generic trash. The singles were the best part, the rest filler. If Ciara or Cassie made that it would have worked with them. But Janet was seen as better than that. Dupri is ugly, so that dick must have good for her to let him destroy an otherwise excellent discography.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 26, 2022 1:13 AM |
Damita Jo was pretty good. Albeit a rehash of All For You but the production was great and filled with some gems. She made the error of changing her producers that made her a star. If she wanted a different sound, why not Pharrell or Timbaland? At least they are competent and creative. Dupri is generic R&B.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 26, 2022 1:17 AM |
r33 I agree making music with Jermaine was a bad move, but Janet had a completely uphill battle after Nipplegate. After watching that FX doc, Janet needed years to recover. In the meantime, people move onto the next thing. Beyonce and Ciara were ruling pop/R&B music by that time.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 26, 2022 1:21 AM |
Janet has always spoken highly of Whitney, and there are pics of them hanging out at events together.
Cissy was a bitch for trashing Janet like that. Notice Whitney didn't say anything, but went after Paula, which might have been a bit of jealousy, given that Paula's debut had more number ones than Whitney's.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 26, 2022 1:25 AM |
[quote]Dupri is generic R&B.
Interestingly though, Mariah Carey had a total career reboot during this same period, thanks to Jermaine Dupri.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 26, 2022 1:29 AM |
The Emancipation of Mimi was a lightning in the bottle. Right time, right sound. Overproduced. Product of the mid-2000s. It clicked better with Mariah's overwrought vocals and dramatic diva image. I think it just didn't work for Janet. Janet needed to do more neo-soul or just full on electropop. She lost her identity after the Super Bowl trying to keep up.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 26, 2022 1:34 AM |
Rock With U and Feedback were steps in the right direction Discipline is so forgettable outside of those two tracks. She could have did more of that hard electronic sound. Her own version of Blackout maybe. Beyonce, Ciara and Rihanna basically took the spot for R&B/pop, so Janet likely didn't have access to the best producers anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 26, 2022 1:37 AM |
Jabba, no one cares. Stop trying to make this hog happen.

[quote] The Jacksons just didn't date other black people in public in the 80s and 90s, but behind closed doors is a different story.
It's funny because many black celebs do the opposite because they're afraid of the backlash from other black people. Especially if they built a brand off of being pro-black and pushing monogamy and the family unit. The Jacksons mostly did or do have black spouses. But they also all got nose jobs. Michael seemed the most self-hating with his obsession with looking like a white woman and hanging out with white kids and even leaving his fortune to white children. It pissed off a lot of black people because Michael bragged about being proud to be black yet acted opposite.

They were friends. Various photos are online of them hanging out together in public, and Whitney even covered “Control” in concert in the late 80s.
Here is a clip of Janet speaking about Whitney on Anderson Cooper…

Rebbie’s late husband and the father of her three kids was black, and Jackie was married to a black woman and had a black son. I believe Marlon is married to a black woman too.

r39 this is the only song I liked and still listen to from that album. Janet should've put out an introspective album, basically Velvet Rope 2, at this time. It was a totally shitty period in my life as well!
Janet was drowning at Def Jam in 2008 when Discipline dropped. Def Jam also had Rihanna and a ton of other people on their roster, I knew it was a bad move. LA Reid publicly said years later regarding this period, that Janet was the most difficult person he ever worked with. They clearly did not see eye to eye which is why she abruptly got out of that deal.

Jackie’s son Deelz is the guy riding around with Aaliyah in her “One in a Million” video.

LUV and What’s Ur Name are two more good Discipline tracks.

I think it's funny Michael actually copied Janet by adapting new jack swing in Dangerous and later reaching out to her for a collaboration with her and Jam and Lewis for Scream. He also had her introduce him for a 1993 Grammy ceremony during the peak of her popularity. Michael really used his siblings. Total narcissistic user. He tried to sabotage Jermaine as he felt him real competition in the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 26, 2022 2:13 AM |
Yes, Michael was a huge diva and very competitive and controlling person just like their father. The public seems to think him being softspoken changed these things. Michael was also anorexic so Im not surprised he called Janet fat, Janet revealed he fat shamed her already so it's not news. They were totally estranged for many years before he died.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 26, 2022 2:23 AM |
Michael and Janet were very different. Michael's image was childlike, he tried to be "raceless" and despite his energy, he was a eunuch. Janet's image was independent, very Black and she was very sexual. Her first two albums were just bubblegum 80s R&B that her father made her do. When she got freedom to make music she wanted, she went sexual. Though she ironically threw shade at Madonna for being slutty.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 26, 2022 2:28 AM |
Michael even used Jam & Lewis to produce a lot of History.
I remember the Vibe Magazine where Janet said they basically turned down her vocals in Scream, which is kind of true. Michael is so loud while Janet does seem like her volume is lowered even though she gives a strong vocal.
I think MJ was threatened by her because she definitely became cooler than him especially between 1986 and 1997.

Never before seen footage from the opening night of the RN Tour in Miami.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 26, 2022 3:02 PM |
Rebbie, Marlon and La Toya should have had more success as their music was not bad, their voices are thin but so was so many R&B and new jack swing singers in the 80s. Only Michael, Janet and Jermaine had success as solo artists. Janet was the only one to really survive into the 90s and 2000s. Michael was struggling in the 90s to stay relevant and his personal life, abuse allegations and plastic surgery did not help. His death restored his legacy.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 26, 2022 6:08 PM |
Rebbie's album in the 90s had some good ass songs.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 26, 2022 7:49 PM |
Rebbie is like 48 in R54's video. She looked really really great and she was killin' that choreography with her nearly 50 year old self. Rebbie is still a very pretty woman at 72 years old. I always thought Janet was a younger version of her. They both look like Katherine. LaToya took more after Joe in the facial department.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 28, 2022 4:47 AM |
The poor sound man. Imagine trying to constantly adjust levels to try to capture that wannabe Marilyn whisper?
You know the bitch has to use her real voice at the KFC drive thru. Ain’t no one able to key in a large order on a whisper.

La Toya like Michael completely destroyed and rebuilt her face. They both looked a lot like Joe and I honestly can understand not wanting to look like your abuser.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 28, 2022 10:33 PM |
Probably because she knows the MJ stans will stalk and attack her r63. I think Janet while not as talented as Michael or Jermaine. Had the best discography of the Jacksons. Jermaine was the most talented hands down (sang, wrote, produced, danced) but lacked Michael's star power and energy on stage.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 28, 2022 10:56 PM |
R64, I prefer Janet’s discography to Michaels too. I like all of her albums except 20 YO.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 28, 2022 11:08 PM |
Michael only had two good albums: Off The Wall and Thriller. The Jackson 5 and Jacksons discography is great too. Bad and Dangerous are so dated sounded and the only good songs were the singles. Don't Be Cruel by Bobby Brown and Faith by George Michael were both better than Bad and Jodeci and Boyz II Men's albums of 1991 were way better than Dangerous.

Its cool that Janet and Randy are still as close as they were when they were kids. Paula Abdul's emotional reminiscing was also sweet.
They were kind to Rene and James for only showing interview footage of them from 2001 LOL. They both look old as hell now, especially James who has lived a very hard life. Rebbie looks great as always.

Six of her albums are charting within the ITunes top 200 and she’s the talk everywhere on social media and tv. MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross’s guest just threw a “What Have You Do e for Me Lately” reference and Tiffany will be talking about the doc in her next segment.

What happened with her and Rene?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 29, 2022 4:21 PM |
Does she address her obesity?
Does she talk about what she eats to gain so much weight? Is it Baja Fresh, or something else?
It's too bad this didn't air on TLC, they could have had Dr. Now come in a read her the riot act about her fatness. They could have shown Tammy from 1000-lb Sisters binge eating together. That would have been entertaining!
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 29, 2022 4:32 PM |
Janet still got emotional over her marriage to James, which ended over 35 years ago. Learning that she was out in the streets looking for him at 19 years old, that was clearly a very difficult time for her.
r75 IRC Rene was cheating on Janet in the late 90s...Tina Landon allegedly knew about it and didn't tell Janet which also ended their friendship. I was hoping that Tina would be included in the doc since she was practically Janet's best friend since the early 90s until they fell out. IMO Janet shouldnt have let Rene cause their friendship to end.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 29, 2022 4:35 PM |
R76, she did say that she gained weight from taking birth control when she was younger.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 29, 2022 4:38 PM |
All For You was her reset after the Rene and Tina fallout. It does seem Rene was her muse in the 90s as she pushing it artistically with janet and The Velvet Rope. Once she lost her marriage an her best friend, she made All For You as a declaration of being a sexually independent woman in her 30s. That's why the sound was so upbeat and aesthetic bright and poppy.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 29, 2022 4:41 PM |
I believe that Tina is going to be on tonight, along with Mariah Carey and some other famous folks.

It was cool hearing Janet sing a early version of Rhythm Nation before the sample with Sly & the Family Stone was added.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | January 29, 2022 5:52 PM |
It was jarring hearing that different melody. Someone on another site said she was just doing the background vocals.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 29, 2022 5:58 PM |
It did sound like she was doing a lower harmony.
What is Rene's deal? He looked hotter here than I remember, more masculine. I remember seeing photos of him back then ad he looked super thin and femme.
What did he actually DO besides tape her?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 29, 2022 6:28 PM |
Rene’s footage is pretty amazing. Camcorders were not something everyone had back then. I have to say, Janet comes off way more likable and intelligent than I’ve given her credit for. It’s obvious that she has self-esteem issues.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 29, 2022 6:33 PM |
Janet always seem sharp. Her interviews were always interesting to me. Michael on the other hand was always so fake and over-rehearsed, obviously as a former child star, always had his guard up.

I thought Rene looked femme back in the day. I thought he was hot in the 90s once he ditched the Jheri curl. James DeBarge looked pretty good later on. She certainly has a type. I will never understand the Jermaine Dupri thing though. Yuck!
You can totally tell that the Jackson’s did not grow up with street smarts. They are really products of the Jehovah Witness religion. Very sheltered.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 29, 2022 7:06 PM |
I think she mentioned Jermaine made her feel like a whole woman and worshipped her beauty and body. Jermaine is short and ugly but I can see him being charismatic and his music industry clout making him attractive. She suffered from low self-esteem and probably felt Jermaine would not stray from her because of his unfortunate looks. Obviously, didn't work as he still cheated. Ugly guys still cheat especially ones like Jermaine.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | January 29, 2022 7:09 PM |
The unseen behind the scenes footage was great. But it's not a tell-all in any meaningful way. For example, she glossed over both her father's and James' abuse. Which is fine, she doesn't owe anyone all the dirt, but don't advertise it as such then. And speaking of misleading, the intro with her and her brother revisiting their Indiana home was quite fake. Even if Janet herself doesn't actively remember living there, all that info about the boys sharing one room and Tito sneak playing their father's guitar, etc. has been public knowledge since the Jacksons first became famous. For Janet to be sitting there going "oh wow, really?" was silly.
She does come across well in her interview portions. And it was interesting to learn that she wanted to go to college and have that experience but was flat-out denied. And that she did not want to do Fame at all.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 29, 2022 7:10 PM |
Janet basically grew up famous. She would have too young to really remember anything about Gary, Indiana as the Jacksons got famous around 1969. She was significantly younger than her other siblings too. Randy the second-youngest is 5 years older. La Toya is 12 years older. Michael is 8 years older. That gave her an advantage to be more of an individual because there was not that much expectations put on her and she was exposed to the showbusiness at such a young age. While she lacked sense in some areas, she was more down-to-earth than Michael ever was.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | January 29, 2022 7:23 PM |
And compared to Michael and Madonna who had to work hard for their success and became insecure and obsessive about maintaining it. Janet grew up around Hollywood and fame and thus never let it get to her head. It was just normal to her. That's why it was easier for Janet to bow out when she saw her time was up. Her drive early on was standing out from her siblings and her relationships and marriages also served as inspirations for her music. Once that well began to dry, The Super Bowl incident and later Michael's death. I can see she lost her motivations.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 29, 2022 7:26 PM |
r83 I guess it was the 90s style that made Rene look that way? He never looked very femme or masculine to me either way, he was just a slim Latino guy.
This is Rene's divorce petition from 2001. Rene stated that he wrote songs and created the Rhythm Nation concept, but he and Janet agreed that Janet would take the credit and they would share the money and proceeds from their work. It seems like Janet was dead set on reinventing her image and being her own creative force outside of the rest of her family. Like she would do whatever it took.
After a power struggle to protect the money she made before meeting Rene, they finally got married in March 1991. Janet also signed her history making deal with Virgin Records around the same time.

Thank God for my DVR so I could fast forward through all the interminable commercial breaks. This seemed largely sugar-coated, especially the eye-rolly Gary, IN, tour. I was hoping for much more recording, video and performance clips and less family revisionist history. Although I did enjoy the clips from the Jackson's Las Vegas show, which I'd completely forgotten about. Won't be watching part II, though.

by Anonymous | reply 99 | January 29, 2022 7:41 PM |
R99 I think someone in the Jackson family owns it. The house is some kind of landmark, and the family is trying to get it declared a historical site. Which just makes Janet's oh wowing at the beginning of the first episode all the more ridiculous. The family's humble beginnings are well documented.

I really do enjoy Janet's music & have nothing against her personally. But a documentary with her involvement piques none of my interest. Just like a documentary about Mariah Carey, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, any of the Kardashians, or any of the Jacksons for that matter, I'd have a hard time believing a single word of it. I'd much rather watch a doc that was assembled by a reputable investigative filmmaker who speaks to everyone except the subject. No whitewashing, no image guarding, no polishing of the veneer, no attempts to "set the record straight" about chatter that already stinks of truth, none of that BS.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 29, 2022 9:15 PM |
r104 even if an investigative journalist did part 1, there honestly was not much whitewash when Janet was a child, up until her mid 20s. Aside from her short marriage to James DeBarge in the mid 80s, which she discuss at length in this, Janet not controversial at all. She faced mostly personal struggles that most young women deal with, except she was rich and famous.
The only omission I noted was her fling with Bobby Brown, she may even touch on that in part 2. And even that is not super salacious, she was a single young woman.
It wasn't until the 90s that shit started hitting the fan for the Jacksons collectively, and it will be interesting to see how it is handled in part 2.

I've been wondering ever since he presented in public with the drastic weight loss how and/or why he lost so much weight. Jimmy should never be smaller than Terry, and he certainly is these days.

Bobby was the least talented of New Edition but had the right attitude and look to launch a solo career. I think people were tired of androgynous light-skinned dudes with falsettos and jheri curls targeting the adult contemporary suburban audience.

They all spent years talking about how awful and abusive Joe was - violent and scary. NOW, he was merely strict and is the hero of the family who they all owe everything to. The whole thing is glossing over how deeply fucked up and dysfunctional they all are.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 30, 2022 2:06 AM |
Joe was an asshole. But as for his parenting, people really need to take in the time period and understand that Joe grew up in a time where Black people were getting beaten and lynched just for looking at a white person the wrong way. Joe beat his kids because he was beaten as a kid and Black parents were authoritarian because they lived in a country that was authoritarian towards them for just being Black.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | January 30, 2022 2:12 AM |
R125 you can acknowledge that and still also acknowledge the harm that Joseph's abuse caused his children. Janet just glossed it all over.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | January 30, 2022 2:23 AM |
R126 Of course. It's a cultural issue. It's not even just a Black thing. It's a poverty thing, poor whites and Latinos similarly physically disciplined their kids harshly. It's the mentality "either I punish you or the police will." Joe did go too far especially with his abuse of La Toya and Michael who he singled out. Janet glossed it over because she was the youngest and the family became famous and rich when she was still a baby.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | January 30, 2022 2:26 AM |
I was hoping more time in part 2 was spent on Nipplegate. Planned or not planned Janet's initial delay and her explanation of what happened (it was a last minute costume change) made it worse for herself and everyone else involved. I do think people overreacted though.
Regarding Joe, black people rarely cut off or disparage their parents...that is a deeply cultural thing. And also, we are talking about things that happened over 50 years ago. Plus Joe is dead. Most of Janet's siblings are grandparents now. At this point they are thinking about their own legacies, just acknowledge Joe for what he did do right and move on.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 30, 2022 2:42 AM |
[quote][R125] you can acknowledge that and still also acknowledge the harm that Joseph's abuse caused his children.
The DeBarge's father would make Joe look like super dad then. He was physically and sexually abusive to his wife and the DeBarge children, which is why James and the rest of them were so fucked up.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 30, 2022 2:51 AM |
I was also hoping she'd say more about the Superbowl. Whether she likes it or not (and I know she doesn't), the Superbowl is one of the main things that comes to peoples' minds when anyone mentions the name "Janet Jackson." It's a defining moment in her career and legacy and I would assume a big reason many people tuned in. To see what dirt she'd dish about it and about Justin Timberlake.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | January 30, 2022 2:54 AM |
The DeBarges were truly tragic especially with Bunny and Bobby. I think the Jacksons were more corrupted by greed and fame that made all the siblings Machiavellian towards one another. Michael acted like a victim but he was also diva and became a bully to his siblings as he became the breakout star.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 30, 2022 2:54 AM |

r133 Michael has been dead for almost 13 years, their mom will be gone any day now too. She has no reason to cut off her siblings at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | January 30, 2022 3:08 AM |
R136, I get why she would be friendly with her mom but why the brothers? Latoya implied her mom believed Wade Robsons claims yet the brothers used the media to trash child sexual abuse survivors.. it reflects badly on Janet IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | January 30, 2022 3:37 AM |
Janet made it very clear that she thinks her brother is innocent so she obviously thinks like the rest of her family does. The Jacksons are loyal. Remember they attended the trial with MJ so, despite their dysfunctionality, they are loyal.
The Jacksons still are messed up. It's obvious Janet has no time for Jermaine or LaToya. Joe was abusive but she was probably torn about how to represent him.
I thought the whole Super Bowl stuff was weirdly presented. Interesting they didn't actually show the shot of Justin ripping off the clothing item. And then Janet's tag-on iPhone video of "Let's move on. Justin and I are friends!" just seemed to be added last minute. Yes, they danced around the whole whether it was staged or not, and also let Justin off the hook considering there was footage of him basically throwing Janet under the bus. They also didn't show her SNL appearance was basically her Fuck You to CBS.

R138 Janet desperately wants the public to forget about the Superbowl but they're never going to. It's going to follow her forever. It's a defining moment and huge turning point in her career. We can't just move on from something that had such a huge impact on our culture and the racist/sexist implications behind it. People want to hear what she has to say about it nearly 20 years later. I would've liked to have seen more behind the scenes and rehearsal footage of it.

In her book True You (the one that made Les Moonves say that heads would roll when it hit NYT #1 Bestsellers List), Janet briefly talked about Joe whipping her once when she was young after she’d just come out of the shower. She also delved into the aspects of being a lonely child with few friends despite having a big family.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | January 30, 2022 12:05 PM |
R130 - one thing about Janet, like a lot of old-school professionals, they don’t throw other pros under the bus. I think to Janet, this was an ill-advised stunt that didn’t work, so you move on. I’m not sure why people are still so hung up on it, anyway. Half the country voted for Trump - Janet flashed a nipple for 1.5 seconds. Perspective.

R119: I remember when All For You came out reading somewhere that Rene cheated with that friend (Tish, one of Janet’s backing dancers from the Janet tour). They seem to hint at it in the footage though Janet/her other friend/choreographer Tina don’t actually say he cheated)

The anger at Justin Timberlake is so stupid and people are only going after him because his career dried up. Nobody dared criticize him back in the mid-2000s. Even if Miss Jussie defended Janet, it would have made little difference. And he did a few years later voice his regret and sympathy for Janet.
I think Timberlake is a manufactured pop star with a ton of help due to his boy band days but he was reasonably talented too. Janet would not have worked with him if he wasn't.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | January 30, 2022 12:30 PM |
The SB incident was the catalyst for the start of YouTube, so all YouTube influencers big and small have Janet to thank for their careers. If it had happened today, it would not have been as big a deal.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | January 30, 2022 12:35 PM |
R148 If it happened today I think social media really would've had her back. People wouldn't have allowed her to be "cancelled" and have her legacy erased like what happened back then. Unfortunately the general public didn't have much of a voice back then so there wasn't much they could do if the big corporations were against her.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | January 30, 2022 12:44 PM |
R147 I agree. It isn't his fault society is racist and sexist and would rather take down a black woman than a white man if they needed to take down anyone at all. Don't just blame him for everything. Blame America, too. Personally, I think it was all crazy and much ado about nothing. Your kids grew up during 9/11 and the War on Terror. If they can handle seeing innocent people being killed each day I don't think a woman's nipple for half a second should be too much of a problem.

Janet never wanted to be a pop star. It was her father, Rene, Jam and Lewis and Abdul and Landon who did the heavy lifting.
Unlike Madonna who had the ambition and goals. Janet had nepotism and connections.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 30, 2022 9:16 PM |
I still don't see the point of the Janet and Madonna comparison. The only thing they share is their limited vocals and dependence on the help of creative geniuses. Madonna probably had no competition by the time True Blue was released. And Janet's competition was Jody Watley, Vanessa Williams and Paula Abdul. Madonna definitely changed the game though and was among the biggest pop stars of all time but I don't think she's really musically talented, just a very smart businesswoman and visionary who knew who to employ. Madonna made connections to get to where she was, she was rubbing elbows with creative person of 80s New York. Janet had nepotism which helped greatly but she clearly was driven just like Madonna, I don't think Janet ever cared about competing with Madonna, she just wanted to make the music she wanted and stand out from her family.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | January 30, 2022 9:24 PM |
I hate to defend Vadge since I hate her as a person but every producer or collaborator she has worked with has said she DOES have musical talent and good instincts for what become huge hits - like her Ray of Light album. She doesn't follow the rules and does what she wants to do. So, no Vadge DOES actually have talent and her collaborators defer to her wishes.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 30, 2022 10:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 30, 2022 11:20 PM |
Pop music is about the visual spectacle and emotional connection rather than just pure musical talent. Many people can sing but few could be pop stars with long lasting careers. I think Vanessa Williams and Jody Watley deserved better pop careers but they smartly bowed out and focused on other things.
Madge stans keep trying to prove that Madge is a good singer. But she's just not. I do respect her for singing live even if it sounds shitty.
I think Janet is a better actress than Madonna. She's very natural in her roles. Madge is just too cold and guarded. So Janet had that one advantage.

I never get the Madonna comparisons either. They are so different as artists. Madonna was among the biggest pop stars of all time, but Janet had to crawl out of the shadow of THE biggest pop star of all time, her brother. That did take creative thinking and ambition, even if she did have resources at her disposal.
What I found most compelling was that Janet felt she had to get married to free herself from her father's control. It is amazing to me that even in the 1980s with all her riches Janet was trapped by old world patriarchy. She really was incredibly sheltered. It helped that all this happened in the stone age with no social media, today a young starlet looking for her druggie husband at a trap house would be blasted everywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 31, 2022 1:49 AM |
Another distinction between Janet and Madonna is that Madonna was a much more prolific artist who seemed to churn out a new album every other year. Back then, Janet's work came out every three or four years so her albums had longer eras. As a result, her album launches truly were an event because they were so infrequent. I would also argue that Janet's albums were more thematic but I know that's debatable.
Madonna has the vocal edge. Janet has the acting edge. Janet's a much more talented dancer and worked with much more innovative choreographers. They both are pretty dope and influential and obviously inspired almost every pop star who came after them so they both deserve their flowers.

The Madonna vs Janet comparison really needs to end. I think both are great pop stars. But their music and personas are very different and even the demographics are different.
By the time Janet released Control in 1986 which rebooted her music career. Madonna reached her legend status with True Blue and had absolutely no competition at this point. Madonna's early competition was the likes of Cyndi Lauper and Pat Benatar. But she ended up crushing them with Like A Virgin.
Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston and Prince were the only ones to compete with Madonna. Janet never was at that level but she was the queen of R&B and new jack swing for the late 80s and 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | January 31, 2022 6:34 PM |
Janet was never at that level, yet she set higher Billboard records with several of her albums and singles than four of the ones you named. Control was the first album by a woman to chart five singles within the top 5 of the Hot 100 (besting True Blue), Rhythm Nation 1814 remains the only album in history with seven top 5 Hot 100 hits (Thriller and Born in the USA tie the top 10 record, but RN bests them both because all of its singles landed top 5), and she has more Hot 100 #1s than Prince. Her 2015 #1 album Unbreakable made her the third artist overall and the only black artist with #1 albums in the 80s/90s/2000s and 2010s (Springstreen and Streisand are the other two). During the '90s, Janet was the highest paid recording artist in history - twice. She had a string of #1 albums from 1986 - 2001, and was the first woman to achieve the 5 consecutive #1 albums streak. She was also the first woman to nab a Producer of the Year Grammy nom, and her 1995 single "Runaway" made her the first woman in the history of music to debut a single in the Hot 100 top 10.
If you're only speaking in terms of cultural impact, well, you're incorrect there too. Janet's personal style, whether she was dressed in militant gear with a baseball cap, ponytail and key earring, or sporting crimson curls, or baring her midriff, or had her hair in long box braids, etc., has been copied by many female artists over the decades. The influence of her tomboy to sexpot transition that occurred between the RN and janet. eras was apparent in artists like TLC and Salt N Pepa, who had similar transitions between albums. Everyone from Britney to J-Lo, to Rihanna to Beyonce to Ciara, Aaliyah, P!nk, Gaga and even various male artists have taken bits of her artistry, from her music videos to her choreography to her concert tours, and she has influenced artists on both sides of the pond. Hell, as stated upthread, her 1993 Rolling Stone cover alone is THE most iconic photo of a female pop star ever, and that is not up for debate.
In other words, you TRIED it, R185.

New Kids' "The Right Stuff" was such a rip-off of "Will You Be Mine" from Janet's Control album. I'm surprised they didn't get sued.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | January 31, 2022 11:03 PM |
Indeed, R200. Bobby Brown’s My Prerogative album and video were basically the male versions of the Control album and video, complete with headset mic and New Jack swag. After Control exploded, you suddenly saw various female dance/pop acts of color like Vanessa Williams, Pebbles, Nia Peeples and Karyn White coming out with Control-esque albums and videos.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | January 31, 2022 11:07 PM |
Both New Kids on the Block and New Edition hopped on the new jack swing phenomenon that Janet's Control album started. New Edition even employed Jam & Lewis to produce their excellent Heart Break album. New Kids' manager and producer Maurice Starr who formerly managed New Edition was too much of a cheapskate to hire Jam & Lewis and just produced his own blatant rip-offs of their sound for New Kids On The Block's Hangin' Tough album.
This song is a copy of "You Can Be Mine."

All *'ve are a couple voiceover clips, and she is speaking in a tiny, trembly whispercoo voice. Like ham acting. It appears to me this doc is as murky and manipulative as the rest of her life has been.
Did people really expect Miss Control to let her hair down?

And if you want to talk about Janet's influence and style. She borrowed from Prince the most as he was the most exciting and innovative artist of the time and completely a Renaissance man. Michael's defining sound was the creation of Quincy Jones. Around the time of Bad, Mike's head got too big and he started micromanaging things hence the unevenness of Bad. And once he ditched Quincy in the early 90s and felt he could do things on his own. That's when his music career severely struggled and the songs he released were outdated by the time. He even copied Janet's new jack swing style with Dangerous employing producers like Teddy Riley and Babyface and later did the duet "Scream" with Janet using her producers, Jam & Lewis. People never question Michael's creative integrity when he was the biggest copycat of all.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | January 31, 2022 11:23 PM |
R205 It's called sampling and all those people are credited. By the 90s, it was commonplace in urban music. Janet didn't start until the 90s doing that. Michael Jackson sampled. George Michael sampled. TLC sampled. Madonna sampled. Britney sampled. Mary J Blige sampled. What's your point?
by Anonymous | reply 207 | January 31, 2022 11:24 PM |
Lots of artists sample other artists’ songs, numb nuts R205. Only two of Janet’s ten Hot 100 #1s contain samples.

by Anonymous | reply 212 | January 31, 2022 11:32 PM |
Most of Janet's songs at least sound original and use the samples creatively. Unlike Jennifer Lopez's songs which are so dependent on the sample to sound decent and at least Janet sings her own songs.

Isn't it funny how this poster can only build up Janet's mediocrity by denigrating other female artists?
by Anonymous | reply 214 | January 31, 2022 11:39 PM |
R214 Nah, you really can't get much mediocre than Jennifer Lopez or Hilary Duff. Neither are involved in their music and it was just a hobby for them in between acting. So not "artists". Madonna and Janet actually worked hard and connected with the right people to craft sonically interesting albums. They were hands-on and I give them credit for being passionate about he music despite their lack of raw musical talent.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | January 31, 2022 11:44 PM |
r205, those songs are some of the best examples of sampling music. Jam and Lewis are legends; you people calling out ANY sampling they did have absolutely no credibility whatsoever. And Im not even bringing Janet into it. Jam and Lewis have created some of the best original R&B songs of all time, so any sampling they did do gave new life into an old song.
That's The Way Love Goes, All For You and Rhythm Nation are the best usages of sampling in Janet's catalog, IMO. The 90s was the era of sampling in R&B, everyone from Puff Daddy, to Jam and Lewis, to Whitney Houston used samples, because it was on trend.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | January 31, 2022 11:46 PM |
First, Control had NO SAMPLES.
2nd, RN1814 used samples in a way that was innovative, a little lick here, a little lick there. They were NOT the entire song.
All for You is probably the first time the song was mostly based on a sample.

I'll even give you a head start: using the guitar riff in "If" from the Supremes is NOT an example. That is simply a small riff that is only used in a very specific part of the song. It's not the basis of If's chordal progression or overall song structure.
Ok, go ahead, drop your musical knowledge on us now.

So what you are essentially saying is Janet got lazier and lazier as her career progressed...interesting....
Is that why she kept doing the same concert over and over again? Inflatable storybook set, crying on a stool, same tired-ass choreography...

[quote] She really should do another doc just focusing on her music. That's what the fans want.
I agree. Let's get real. The Jacksons will never tell the full story at least as long as Katherine is alive and crazy MJ stans of course. They have the same rehearsed backstory of "it all started in Gary, Indiana..." fairy tale crap. And Janet herself is still too guarded about the Super Bowl thing. She does love talking about her music and choreography. She did at least open up about her failed relationships and strained relationship with Michael.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | February 1, 2022 1:28 AM |
Wish there was more focus on her music (the behind the scenes stuff in the studio, writing Scream with Michael were the highlights for me). It's insane that they glided right past The Velvet Rope album/era. Isn't Together Again her biggest hit? Don't understand why that was left on the cutting room floor.
Also to those trolls calling Janet a has-been, the premiere of the doc got 15.7 million viewers on Lifetime and A&E (simulcast). She's a permanent A-Lister and legend.

by Anonymous | reply 235 | February 2, 2022 12:45 AM |
I get the sense that Janet doesn't really care about her music career anymore. I guess one cannot blame her since she was basically rejected by the world after the Super Bowl. Sure she gets all this love now but from 2004 and the following years, she was treated like a pariah. That must have been traumatizing for her and killed a lot of her passion for music. Plus, as she said in the documentary, it was her father who basically pushed her into a music career. She does seem grateful that he did that for her but she does seem focused on other things than music nowadays.
I agree that skipping the Velvet Rope was really disappointing. It was obvious the Rene/Janet marriage was breaking down and maybe it's too painful for Janet to speak about.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | February 2, 2022 12:47 AM |
She was severely depressed during the making of TVR, so it may be a sore spot. I do love seeing her getting her flowers. The RNR HoF induction and the Library of Congress National Registry adding RN are just a couple of highlights over the past few years, and the ratings bonanza for her documentary and the fact that her videos and albums are charting on iTunes is the perfect topper.

Janet's influence is just too huge to deny. So many pop stars were jacking her sound, choreography and fashion style. The Madge stans think sales are the only thing that matters. Nobody denies Madonna was bigger in sales. But Janet was hugely influential to young people from all over in the 80s and 90s and her music videos were MTV events. The media basically erased Janet's legacy and pretended she never existed until a few years ago. Madonna's legacy also seems erased for the current moment. I've noticed how easy it for the mass media to have amnesia over pop stars that were huge. Like Usher was big from 1997 to 2008 yet no mention of his influence on R&B and hip-hop.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | February 2, 2022 1:26 AM |
Vadgestan always has meltdowns like this when Madonna's contemporaries (and even her disciples such as Lady Gaga) have any critical or commercial success. Vadgestan prefers to denigrate Janet, Mariah, Gaga rather than focus on the trainwreck that Madonna has become over the years on social media.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | February 2, 2022 1:32 AM |
Gaga is not just a Madonna clone, she has elements of David Bowie, Sir Elton and Grace Jones. Madge can't say shit because she copied those people too and she later copied the nu-disco sound of Kylie Minogue in the early 2000s and the urban pop sound of Britney and Justin Timberlake in the later 2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | February 2, 2022 1:36 AM |

[quote] I get the sense that Janet doesn't really care about her music career anymore.
She definitely seems to have different priorities right now but her album is reportedly coming this year. I felt pretty sad for her sitting alone talking about hoping for a healthy relationship someday. It’s just the way that she said it that was truly sad. The documentary did humanize her and featured her speaking frankly without all that baby talk nonsense she does. Her print interviews were always more articulate than her television ones. Whether it’s anxiety or whatever, who knows? She reminds me of a lot of people who get older and start seeing their horrible parents in a new light. It’s like they need that to move forward. It’s probably easier in the Joe Jackson case now that he’s dead and can’t beat them anymore.

This was a great project for Janet and a great way to restore her legacy and introduce her to a new generation of fans. I kind of wish Madonna would do something similar because, let's face it, judging from those script pics on M's Instagram, that movie is going to be a mess on the level of The Lonely Lady. It's going to be so bad.
Janet's documentary wasn't perfect but I did sense Janet trying to be a lot more open and introspective. I wish the music got more focus, but I guess as fans we already know the impact of her albums, but it would have been nice for a bit more focus on that impact for the younger people who didn't get to experience Janet's peak at the time.
