I saw they had this on Peacock, along with the entire Columbo series. Because I recently became a HUGE Columbo, I thought I'd give Murder, She Wrote a chance. I couldn't make it through the pilot episode. I skipped to an episode in the middle of season two and it was even worse. Yuck! There was one episode with a young Joaquin Phoenix (maybe 10-12 years old) but even that one sucked.

It was uninteresting, uninspired and unwatchable

Murder She Wrote was originally written for Jean Stapleton. CBS was eager to keep her around after she left All in the Family and commissioned several pilot scripts for her to consider. She was interested but eventually passed. The producers thought their show had potential and shopped the script around to other actresses. Angela got the part because she was the first to say yes. The character was obviously inspired by Agatha Christie's Miss Marple.

^ Angela had actually played Miss Marple a year or two earlier in the film "The Mirror Cracke'd" with Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak and Rock Hudson. It's not great but parts of it are a real campfest.

Although I will grant you that Midsomer often has three murders per episode.

R38 most of the MSW episodes were not set in Cabot Cove, Jessica was a globetrotter.

It’s cuz everyone in Cabot Cove was murdered. They had to branch out.

And everywhere Jessica went, more bodies turned up.

I think it works if you imagine each episode works in isolation and Jessica isn't actually constantly solving murders or almost getting killed. Otherwise, how can she not have PTSD?

The only other place that's as dangerous as Cabot Cove is Hudson University.
