I love Aunt Esther!!!

Rofl

by Anonymousreply 1March 3, 2021 5:31 PM

She looka like a man.

by Anonymousreply 2March 3, 2021 5:31 PM

Four seconds in, and I was laughing. Thanks, OP. I needed the laughs.

Gonna go watch the rest, now.

by Anonymousreply 3March 3, 2021 5:34 PM

She was hilarious

by Anonymousreply 4March 3, 2021 5:55 PM

LaWanda Page was brilliant as Aunt Esther.

by Anonymousreply 5March 3, 2021 6:01 PM

I always loved when she threatened to hit Fred with her purse!

That fucking cracks me up.

by Anonymousreply 6March 3, 2021 6:03 PM

Those were the good old days when people could be totally un-PC and un-woke, and not be cancelled.

Same for Archie Bunker.

It made for hilarious and cutting television.

People nowdays pretend that nobody speaks this way, when in reality EVERYONE speaks this way.

My favorite was when Fred always called her UGLY.

That would be unheard of nowdays, but it is comedy GOLD.

by Anonymousreply 7March 3, 2021 6:06 PM

Gorilla cookies!

by Anonymousreply 8March 3, 2021 6:48 PM

Rofl R8.

Just reading your words made me laugh out loud.

Did they really say that to each other?? BWahahahaha.

by Anonymousreply 9March 3, 2021 6:51 PM

The last season, Nancy Kulp recurred, and Fred's insults were twice as cutting. She'd drop her jaw in shock yet just stand there and take it.

I loved straight laced Nancy Kulp’s character as the neighborhood beat cop’s mom who moved in next door to Fred and Lamont.

Aunt Esther is my role model.

by Anonymousreply 11March 3, 2021 7:06 PM

Aunt Esther was a showgirl in her youth.

There was a fun SAS episode where Fred was competing for the affections of Donna. His rival was played by the great Roscoe Lee Browne. At one point Browne jumped up and started doing karate movies to show off his physical prowess; Fred, seeing him jump around and make noises, says in an incredulous voice "This N-word's crazy!" It was hilarious. The line was so funny that Richard Pryor used it for the title of one of his comedy albums: "This N-word's Crazy."

by Anonymousreply 13March 3, 2021 8:25 PM

Before Aunt Esther, there was Aunt Ethel, played by the far more gentle Beah Richards, Oscar nominee for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". She played Minnie Belle Ward years later on "Designing Women" in the classic New Year's episode, being escorted to heaven by Dolly Parton.

by Anonymousreply 14March 3, 2021 9:06 PM

Hysterical.

I was surprised how often they used the N word for TV.

I mean, Foxx was as blue as could be in his routines.

by Anonymousreply 15March 3, 2021 9:14 PM

Those were the days.

by Anonymousreply 16March 3, 2021 10:05 PM

[quote] I was surprised how often they used the N word for TV.

If it wasn't a problem then, I don't understand why it's a problem now.

We're all fucking adults. We can handle it.

These dumbass networks act as though these words aren't said every day of the week, on every street corner in black neighborhoods.

It's like how a husband and wife had to sleep in separate beds on television in the 50's.

Just ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 17March 3, 2021 10:42 PM

I can't believe she said it on a hit primetime show in the '70s, but there she is at 2:40 on the OP video:

Aunt Esther: "What'd you say, nigger?!"

by Anonymousreply 18March 3, 2021 10:43 PM

A few years after Redd Foxx died Lawanda and a few of the other cast members were interviewed on some show (can't remember which one it was) and she had little good to say about Demond Wilson. He didn't show up at Foxx's funeral and Page was still incensed over it.

by Anonymousreply 19March 4, 2021 1:47 AM

Those old-time show-biz Negroes are a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 20March 4, 2021 2:08 AM

Beah Richards also played Dr. Peter Benton's mother on ER.

by Anonymousreply 21March 4, 2021 4:38 AM

I never knew that Aunt Esther was played by a drag queen.

I guess my young self wasn't aware of these things.

by Anonymousreply 22March 4, 2021 6:55 AM

Aunt Esther lives...

She got that peanut butter pussy, brown, smooth, and easy to spread.

by Anonymousreply 24March 4, 2021 7:50 AM

When TV was funny!

Thanks, OP. I loved Sanford & Son and you know I loved me some Aunt Esther!

by Anonymousreply 25March 4, 2021 8:19 AM

I mean....was that supposed to be funny R23? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 26March 4, 2021 10:03 AM

Fun Fact: LaWanda Page did the spoken intro on RuPaul's 1993 song "Supermodel (You Better Work)". And Page speaks again at around the 2:15 mark. Unfortunately, she did not appear in the music video.

R27, LaWanda Page did appear in RuPaul's video for "Back to my Roots"

Only to people who have a sense of humor, R26.

By the way, it's very kind of you to come to Reid's defense, I can promise you (if you're a gay man or a lesbian) she wouldn't do the same for you.

Kisses!

Lawanda almost lost that job in the beginning. She had problems learning her lines and working with the television format as she'd worked primarily in night clubs doing a very raunchy act, and they were prepared to fire her and recast, but Foxx stepped in (they were close friends since early childhood in St. Louis) and was able to teach her some tricks of the trade to help her with her lines. He went so far as to threaten to quit the show if they fired her.

Here's some of Lawanda's raunchy act.

Yeah R29 as soon as you post something that's funny...I'll get one. Deal?

Stealth Markle thread

by Anonymousreply 32March 5, 2021 10:38 AM

[quote] I was surprised how often they used the N word for TV.

I can't remember the exact episode of "The Jeffersons", but as usual, George did something to piss Louise off and in that particular segment she gave him a disgusted look and said, "N----r, please".

by Anonymousreply 33March 5, 2021 8:32 PM

I've been binge-watching this show due to this thread, and Redd Foxx was hysterical as Fred Sanford.

by Anonymousreply 34March 7, 2021 9:48 PM

Larry King had stated that Demond Wilson was his most unpleasant interview due to Wilson’s arrogance.

by Anonymousreply 35March 7, 2021 10:32 PM

When I was a kid, my brother and I would often use that “I’m going to stick your face in dough and make gorilla cookies” insult on each other.

by Anonymousreply 36March 7, 2021 10:52 PM

I loved when Aunt Esther called Fred an old fish-eyed fool.

by Anonymousreply 37March 7, 2021 10:59 PM

Bernie Mac used the N word on his show back in the early 2000s. He made the comment to the wife that they were not really rich, they were n----r rich.
