Now..... not so much

Patrick Mahomes will end up here. Such a beautiful babyface, but the type of looks that will not last.

I actually think Hugh Grant's looks held up very well, r4. Like Rob Lowe.
Now, Lowe's erstwhile co-star James Spader is a different story (although admittedly it took more than 10 years).

Agree British Royals - as the archetype of the horrible British /Irish aging process. So beautiful before 28 then swiftly downhill. Envy the white skin and entitlement - but karma is a bitch when it comes to aging.

I saw Anderson Cooper in 1999 at The Works on the UWS. He was unknown , for the most part then. He was on ABC News Overnight , which went on around 2am. I don't recall being attracted to him even then.

Prnce Harry and his gramps, although grandpa held onto his looks for almost a 100 years

I've always thought Anderson Cooper looked like a bottle of Elmer's glue, but to each his own. (He's much shorter and paler in person.)

R20, Anderson has referred to himself as “an amoeba-like creature”.

the one that always surprised me was Brooke Shields. She was such a stunning teenager but as she got older she lost a lot of that beauty.

R22- TRUE
She was STUNNING at 15 and merely pretty at 25.

Do DL Queens agree that Anderson Cooper looks a bit ALBINO.

Shelley Winters had a brief period as a red hot mama, but I don't know if that lasted even five years. I do think that's where her confidence and on-screen charisma came from.

R14/R15, wow! Seems to match the Joan Crawford trajectory, where they favored bolder eyebrows with age and that took something away. Pre-code Joan Crawford was breathtaking, and then her eyebrows took over.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 2, 2021 7:52 PM |
To be fair, a major part of Brendan's change in appearance is due to the accident he had doing a lot of damage to his body.

R26- I watched the 1977 movie Fun With Dick And Jane about 3 months ago and George Segal was still GOOD looking.

Cindy Crawford has had some weird work done--injectables? partial lift? She doesn't look terrible, just a bit strange and pulled.
Cindy and Brooke Shields both have "horseface" syndrome--faces and features lengthening over time, including pronounced jawlines. (I don't know if either of them is a classic WASP, but I associate this with really WASPy women.)
Still "handsome" women, but nowhere near the heartstopping loveliness of their youth.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 2, 2021 9:38 PM |
Ashley Judd has looked terrible for over a decade.

I can't remember whether this comment was about Brooke Shields or Julia Roberts. Somebody I know saw them in person and said that the head was tiny in comparison to the body.
The royals: eyes too close together on almost all of them. Plus, maybe the consanguinity (cousins marrying) has an effect on the aging process.

Princess Diana really morphed into an actual sculpted beauty after 30, when she lost the baby fat and her cheekbones and longer head matched her long nose. The last 5 years she became a truly beautiful woman.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 2, 2021 10:32 PM |
After George and pre-Luis, Kate Middleton was at her best. For some reason she looked younger and had a better glow than at her wedding where she was kind of sallow and of course, now she looks tired. Some women are like that. An ex gf of mine was cute enough in high school but when I saw her 10 years ago at 35 she was a stunner. Of course, now she has gone through a messy divorce and looks tired. Maybe hormones between pregnancies.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 2, 2021 10:34 PM |
A lot of people will disagree, but Elizabeth Taylor had a very small window when she was truly beautiful. She became dumpy and matronly looking very early in life.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 2, 2021 10:40 PM |
Brooke and Cindy (especially Cindy) need to lay off the HGH. It brings out a mannish look.
I have seen Brooke Shields in real life and she has a normal sized head. Not tiny, it is in proportion to her body.

So did Grace Kelly.

Although I don't look a day over 19, I was most visually stunning from 20 - 30. I think this is pretty typical for most people.

[quote] I was most visually stunning from 20 - 30.
Fortunately you’re only 35, Ms. Zeta-Jones, so I’m sure you are close to being as visually stunning as you were at 30.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 2, 2021 11:20 PM |
R47 Tall women like Brooke and many models tend to have generally more masculine features, that when younger may make them look stunning. Tall women are exposed to more testosterone proportionally compared to shorter/ petite women during puberty. Shorter women get the surges of estrogen earlier in puberty thus causing bone growth plates to mature quicker e.g. stop growing. It’s why there’s the controversial treatment of giving very tall girls estrogen in their teens to make them stop growing any taller.
Notice models like Brooke, Gisele, many of the famous supers of the 90s-2000s had the same thing happen to them as they age too because women start to have lower estrogen in their mid-30s onward. Brooke Shield in her late 30s and 40s had a very masculine face.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 2, 2021 11:35 PM |
Look at these supers and how aging masculinizes the face. Cindy before fillers and major work done was looking more like she was going down the Brooke Shield route. Now Cindy just looks overly surgeried. Shalom Harlow could pass for trans now. Nikki Taylor looks pretty good.

Leonardo DiCaprio. Akward as a teenager, breathtakingly beautiful from age 20 to 22, handsome but already somewhat hardened/bitter looking from 23 – 30. After that, things went downhill fast. By 35, he was pretty much unrecognizable from his heartthrob days.
Kate Moss: unique, ethereal, almost alien-esque beauty as a teenager, but while she was still a very attractive woman in her 20s and early 30s, she didn't have that je ne sais quoi anymore imo; the magic was gone. I think part of it was that she started losing volume in her lips very early, and those big, luscious, beautifully curved lips were crucial to her appeal. Her mouth even became somewhat weird/distorted-looking with age.
Gisele: Never a conventional beauty, but in her teens and VERY early 20s, she had a spark, an energy, an earthy sensuality that made her stand out. Whatever it was, it was pretty much gone by 21. While the loss of baby fat and her already strong features hardening with age couldn't have helped matters, it seemed more like psychological issue to me than a mere case of 'bad aging'.

Matthew Perry. He never looked better than when he was on drugs - he was thin and tan and blond and only had one chin. And then he got sober and bloated and was never the same. Of course he was never as handsome as his father.

[41] Belinda C was amazingly beautiful during her blonde, slim 80s era. She did look good as a redhead but like all dyed redheads she keeps dyeing it red even through her hair has thinned a bit and lost it's lustre with age. She looks incredibly terrible in the 2020 Go-Gos doco - all that surgery has really ruined her.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | March 5, 2021 8:05 AM |
The thing about Bacall was that she kept her looks much later in life than many other people have. Also, though I agree she was exquisite as a young woman, I never minded her "harsher" appearance because I've always associated it with her noir roles, and those are the ones I really enjoy. The Bacall of "The Big Sleep" is more interesting than the Bacall of "To Have and Have Not" in part because she looks like she's had experience.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 5, 2021 8:24 AM |
Agree with r97: this thread is for people who were only hot for a very brief period, under 10 years, ideally under 5.
So for example, Vivien Leigh's appearance change over the 12 years between GWTW and Streetcar does not qualify. And neither do the erstwhile supermodels mentioned above, who -- while perhaps they didn't retain their exceptional attractiveness for that long -- still qualify as generically attractive into their 50's.
Remember, not everyone can keep their looks unchanged from age 21 to 61 like us here on DL!
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 5, 2021 8:38 AM |
Helmut Berger is a great example. Ironic that he once played Dorian Gray -- I bet he wishes he had a portrait in his attic!
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 5, 2021 8:40 AM |

Leonard Whiting. Stunning in 1968 while filming Romeo and Juliet. By '69 his looks were already going.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | March 5, 2021 2:41 PM |
[R98] Mansfield is a great example. Hard-living and alcohol bloat really took the toll on her looks. She looked 10 years older than she actually was by time she died. She’d been stunning in her heyday. Oddly, her later years dissipation is a part of her strange legend. For me anyway.

by Anonymous | reply 117 | March 19, 2021 3:38 AM |
R51 That makes sense. I was born in the 1980s, so I first heard of Brooke Shields when she had her "comeback" in the 90s. People raved about what a "great beauty" she was, and while she was pleasant enough looking, I just didn't see it. Later, I saw Endless Love on cable and I got it.
The models that seem to fare the best with age are the ones with delicate features like Christy Turlington.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | March 19, 2021 3:52 AM |
Most of the models who look masculine now were masculine looking while young, it had nothing to do with their height. Look at the models from before the glamazon trend, they don't look trans to me. Twiggy, Paulina Porizkova, Jean Shrimpton etc. All tall women who did not look masculine later in life.
