There's something pathological about imagining an invented scenario about something that might have happened way back in high school, and imagining how someone you've never met -- and never will meet -- would have come to your rescue, or not. When I was in high school in the 1980s pretty much everyone was closeted but I know of two instances where guys who came out much later defended a gay kid getting picked on constantly, risking their own safety to do so.
