Now this is a great movie. Linda Darnell, Ann Southern, Jeanne Crane. Best Director and Screenplay in 1949 for Joseph Mankiewicz, the year before he directed All About Eve.

Funny thing about this movie - I've seen the movie two or three times over the years, enjoy it each time, and I find two out of three of the wives vividly memorable... and have no clue what was up with the third!
I remember the soap writer whose snotty bitch of a husband trashed her work with every waking breath, and the beautiful gold-digger who snared an ugly older man, and brought her mother to live with them and kill any boners that might still be happening. But there was a third wife with a troubled marriage, played by Jean Crain if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember a damn thing about her issues.

Poor country girl who met her rich husband in the Navy.

A Letter to Three Wives on TCM at 11:30 am PDT today, followed by All About Eve, followed by Two for the Road. I was wondering what to do today, but TCM has decided for me.

I think I will. And it's going to be a Malbec.

Watching it right now, TCM. I've seen it, but I forget the ending.

Ann Sothern -- most talented
Linda Darnell -- most beautiful
Jeanne Crain -- who did she sleep with?
Uncredited Thelma Ritter steals every scene in only her third movie role.

I think it's better than All About Eve: an equally smart script, but more cinematically impressive.

All About Eve starting!
Squee!
Adorbz!

Two for the Road sucks, it could have been something, but it wasn't. And Audrey is super anorexic in this one.

If I was you, I'd show more o' what I got. Maybe wear somethin' with beads.

Letter to Three Wives is a great movie but suffers greatly from a uninspired and uncharismatic casting, Ritter being the exception.
And yes, each time i see it I never remember the ending as well (which is telling).

Mrs. Finney : Of all the times to quit a job, just before Christmas with all the bills due and five months due on the icebox!
Sadie : You got to make up your mind whether you want your kids happy or your icebox paid up.

Thelma was a stage actress long before she appeared in movies, so "only her third movie" makes no difference. It's not like she just started acting.

Why is it “catnip for the elder gays” OP? On what basis.

Blind you are, if catnip for the elder gays you can not see.

I assumed OP meant because these kids today have no appreciation for fine classic films.

I was unimpressed with this one. I didn’t care for the ending.

Omg!

Linda Darnell is my favorite. Amazing that Jeanne Crain was originally cast as Eve Harrington but dropped out. Davis would have wiped her off the screen.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 24, 2022 11:11 PM |
Gene Tierney wiped Jeanne Crain off the screen in LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. Jeanne was the more conventional beauty. But she couldn’t touch Gene. Maybe she wasn’t supposed to outshine her.

Jeanne Crain was gorgeous, but had very limited range and little charisma; her only Oscar nomination came for her "bravery" in playing the role, not for the quality of her performance: as light-skinned black woman passing as white in Pinky (1949).

Why were the ladies so nervous when Hollingsway was asking about the refrigerator? I had thought maybe Darnell's character had finagled it, but the quote at r16 indicates it was purchased.

I love the movie and always fantasize about how it could be remade. But with cell phones how could the women not know which husband had left them. They’d know once they got off the boat.

A Text to Three Wives
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 1, 2022 12:56 PM |
Ann Sothern always had that snappy, quick retort quality in her roles, yet she was a "good guy" and a mensch....much like Eve Arden. Linda Darnell had a sarcastic, jaded way....sort of a "bad girl" quality in her roles. It's a fun movie and always watch it when it's on.

Ann Sothern = less pretentious version of Celeste Holm.

[quote] …pretentious…
That word is needed for all of Mankiewicz' films.
But the worst must be this one with Archie Leach and Stick-Woman.
It's talky, too esoteric for its own good, weird, arcane, painfully philosophic, pompous, unrealistic and contrived.
