Wonderful Janet vocals. And they are LIVE.

I love Madonna's vocals on her 80s songs like "Think of Me", "Papa Don't Preach", "Crazy For You", "Cherish" and "Live to Tell". She sounded good on Ray of Light too. She is far from the worst singer but takes herself way too seriously now and tries too hard. She sounds more off-key nowadays than she did when young. The collabs she did with Timberlake and Britney were among her worst efforts.

That said, Paula Abdul definitely had the worst vocals in mainstream pop. She was a dancer (a fantastic one at that) so it was forgivable. Britney was Paula 2.0.

Nobody needs to listen to that R22. We know what Madonna sounded like. She has a nice warm tone and a good exuberance. She certainly DID improve with vocal training and lessons. But she can't really sing.

Janet could sing well. Her intonation, phrasing, breath control and vocal agility are all there. Her tone is far more pleasing than Michaels tbh. But she had no power and her voice was So. Very. Small.

R23, that's not true. La Toya Jackson (like Janet), has a small voice and has never been a great singer. She also made HORRIBLE career & music choices once her sleazy husband/manager Jack Gordon took over in the late 80s. But early on (1981-1986) she recorded some excellent Pop/R&B material. Though thin, limited & somewhat robotic, her voice is crystal clear and capable of projecting sass, sweetness and sexiness.

It's a shame that none of her best material hit in a huge way. She might have found a STRONG production/songwriting team, continued to perfect her "sound" and become a much stronger singer/song stylist.

Madonna would not have had much of a music career had it not been for male producers and songwriters she worked with either. The difference is Madonna had more of a say because she wrote and co-wrote several songs that did well and was a big enough name so that even if she barely wrote a song she could get a songwriting credit.

Madonna relied on help just like every other pop star did. She is involved with the music and production and has a lot of input on the final product but again so does basically every pop musician. The bare minimum that Madonna has to do is change one word which can still get you a songwriting credit. I imagine that anyone who has worked in the music industry long enough should be able to figure out how to make a melody and a tune. But they would still need to hire someone to refine it and make it presentable to the public.

Madonna hanged out with artists for years in NYC before making her debut, so she surrounded herself with creative people who helped her out a lot.

Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Paula Abdul, Rihanna and Chris Brown all have songwriting credits too.
