I do wonder what her actual financial situation is. Most of those old time musical stars got screwed over by record companies. I'm assuming she is what I call "rich people poor" meaning that she does better than most working Americans and lives comfortably and can pay her bills, but doesn't have the kind of wealth you pass down to the next generation.

Aretha died with $80 million in the bank, Dionne should have at least half of that but for some reason it all disappeared.

Maybe a good chunk of the $$$ from all of her 60s hits went to Bacharach and David and she didn't make nearly as much off of those recordings.

So many of Aretha's contemporaries ended up flat broke because of crooked management and business practices. They sold millions of records and played thousands of sold-out concerts and had no money to show for it. Dionne and her friend Johnny Mathis had very similar careers, success-wise, yet Mathis lives the comfortable life of a multi-millionaire while Dionne is destitute. Dionne still had success in the 1980s and could still chart hits on the singles and albums charts, while Mathis's career was mostly over at that point. She even had Whitney's big coattails to ride during the 80-90s. Either Dionne spent money like a drunken sailor, or she had a horrible manager. Where did all that Solid Gold money go to?

Aretha always carried her purse onstage with her because that's where she kept her concert money.

I didn't know Dionne supports her two sons, and they both have kids of their own. Obviously, that's where a lot of the money went.

Johnny Mathis, of course, never had kids.

Patti LaBelle has done well for herself financially, too. While Dionne had a more successful music career than Patti, Patti was able to reinvent herself in the 80s and 90s with a number of hit singles and albums, numerous TV specials, a short-lived sitcom, and now she's making a ton of money with her frozen bakeries.

Dionne should be as wealthy (or wealthier) than a lot of her contemporaries. It's a shame that she's the brokest.

She said herself, The View saved her financially and she recently sold one of her California homes for nearly $9 million dollars two years ago. Whoopi is doing better than ever financially. She Also has several businesses making good money as well as several films and television shows in the works.

She's secure in her old age.

And they trust the wrong people and/or the family members come with their hands out to get in on the gravy train. If Dionne is still taking care of her grown ass adult children, then that's awful.

I often have this discussion with people about Hip Hop and sports stars who make it big. Often, these people come from backgrounds where they just don't understand money management, so they spend like crazy without making good financial choices that will sustain them for the rest of their lives.

If no one ever taught you about money, then when you get some, you are at a major disadvantage. This is why so many lottery winners end up filing for bankruptcy.

Many celebs think the fame and the work will last forever. They really think the $$$ they're raking in when they're hot at 25 will never end, which is so stupid. Most of them only have a decade or so to make the big bucks then their careers cool down.

Whitney was pretty much broke too when she died, or was well on her way to being broke like Dionne. I don't know why that family couldn't find good managers. If you compare Whitney's net worth to Mariah Carey's, the difference is dramatic, even though they were both hugely successful. It all comes down to hiring good managers.
