I've never been a smoker, but I used to be friends with smokers back in the 90s and my Mom was a smoker. All of my friends smoked Marlboro Lights. How did you choose your brand?
To DL Smokers/Former Smokers: What Brand Do/Did You Smoke?

LeRoy's Low-Tar Crack

Marlborough Lights. I miss them but prefer living. Funnily I don't go insane when I see someone smoking (although, to be honest, smokers these days don't seem to be the kind of people you'd want to associate with) and I still enjoy the smell of a fresh cigarette being smoked. Wouldn't want it my house though or to smell it the day after.

I started on Marlboro Lights, then Parliaments then finally Marlboro Reds. My tolerance for cigarettes increased so Lights and Parliaments didn't do much for me anymore. I figured that I had to quit because after Reds it would've been unfiltered cigs and that's just too much.

Do different cigarettes taste differently or is it the level of nicotine?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 26, 2021 7:15 PM |
Yes they taste differently. I could've been blindfolded and known what brand I was smoking. Most smokers have very strict brand preferences and can't smoke just any random brand.

I was a Marlboro smoker and couldn't stand Camel, Winston or American Spirits.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 26, 2021 7:21 PM |
R4 Agree with R5 Smoked Marlboros because I preferred the taste and I tried but, didn't like Marlboro lights. Camels were very strong and Salems seem too light. I believe the taste had to do with the tobacco used and Camels were Turkish tobacco. And I avoided cigarettes with plastic filters YUCK! Haven't smoked for over 20 years.

I smoked Marlboro Red because it was readily available.
When I went to a tobacco shop, I bought Nat Shermans or Dunhills.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 26, 2021 7:23 PM |
Sometimes, if I concentrate, I swear I can conjure up the taste of Marlboro Reds in my mouth. If smoking weren't deadly I would be smoking like a chimney for the rest of my life. God, I loved smoking.

Started out with Lucky Strikes (and keep in mind I was born in the late 70's), so yes, I was that pretentious as a teenager.
Switched to Marlboro Reds as smoking unfiltered cigarettes were hard to smoke and actually difficult to find.
Then Pall Mall Reds when cigarettes when to north of $8 a pack (Pall Malls are cheaper).

Former Smoker:
Marlboro Lights

I smoked a pipe and always bought Black Knight tobacco. I stopped smoking years ago, but after dinner still miss that pipe.

Former smoker: Senior Service, then Lucky Strikes, then Marlboro Reds until I finally gave up 15 years ago. I really don’t miss the smoking, but strangely enough miss the packaging of Senior Services and Lucky Strikes.

Curious, was there a cigarette brand that was considered classy and one that was considered trashy?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 26, 2021 7:36 PM |
Newports were considered trashy where I'm from, R14.
I hopped around a lot but mostly smoked Marlboros. I liked the Special Blend Reds more than the regular Reds.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 26, 2021 7:37 PM |
Newports have a very trashy and "ghetto" stereotype. Many whites who like menthol will smoke Marlboro Menthol or Camel Menthol because they don't want to be associated with the Newport brand stereotype.
Pall Mall has been a cheap budget brand since the early 2000s and it's only smoked by white trash. The other budget brands like Maverick have the same reputation.

Marlboro Reds! Now the occasional (as in once or twice a year) pipe or cigar
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 26, 2021 7:53 PM |
I tried every brand at one time or another and Marlboro Reds were definitely the best.

Former smoker. Marlboro Lights Box. Do you know how hard it was to turn over a wish cigarette in a soft pack?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 26, 2021 9:31 PM |
Here is another question, what is the difference between the box and the soft pack other than the obvious?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 26, 2021 11:44 PM |
The cigs in the box were a little shorter.

I was overseas in Asia for most of my smoking career and usually bought what ever was the cheapest. It was hard to be motivated to quit when cigarettes cost 50 cents a pack.

Salem Lights. Quit when I was 30.

Former smoker. I quit smoking 24 years ago.
Salem 100s

Lady Laramie Hi-Tar 100s
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 27, 2021 5:39 PM |
Marlboro Lights. God, I miss them. If they weren’t deadly and stinky, I’d smoke my head off.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 27, 2021 5:50 PM |
Former smoker. I started smoking right when Camel came out with all those delicious limited edition flavors around 2000/01. Izmir Stinger, chocolate mint, mandarin mint... they were tasty & came in those cool tins.
After that, I mainly smoked Camel Turkish Gold & Turkish Jade(menthol). During the lean times, I downgraded to Dorals. At one point when my bf and I had no money, we scrounged up some change and bought Double Diamond brand, which was the cheapest they had at 7-Eleven. They were nasty & a bit headachey, but they did the job.
I quit fifteen years ago through hypnosis, but this year I've been getting strong cravings. I live two blocks from a 24 hour gas station, which doesn't help. Did I mention I'm also a recovering alcoholic? That's been a serious temptation as well.

r28 don't do it! I relapsed into smoking again after being clean for four months and I hated myself. I smoked for another year and a half and had to quit all over again. It's not worth it.
