Superman black now!

Ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 1February 26, 2021 6:03 PM

I see no issue. I really enjoyed Into The Spider-Verse and I grew up watching Justice League with the black Green Lantern.

by Anonymousreply 2February 26, 2021 6:04 PM

Oh shut up, you fucking troll. This doesn't mean Superman is going to be black in the reboot. Although it would be an incredibly bold and brave choice if they did make him black.

by Anonymousreply 3February 26, 2021 6:05 PM

Ooooops, nevermind!

I didn't write the article, you stupid cunt.

by Anonymousreply 6February 26, 2021 6:07 PM

Superman is an alien and a fictional character. Not to mention the fact that the creators were Jewish and put a lot of references to Judaism into his origin story. I always saw Superman as a representation of an immigrant trying to fit into a society that rejects him for being different.

by Anonymousreply 7February 26, 2021 6:08 PM

I hope he's better at writing movies than he is at writing comics. His Black Panther and Captain America runs have been underwhelming at best.

by Anonymousreply 11February 26, 2021 6:13 PM

I mean Superman is an alien from a make believe planet. I don't know why Kryptonians can't look like white or black humans.

But man, if true people will freak out.

by Anonymousreply 16February 26, 2021 6:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 17February 26, 2021 6:18 PM

Superman up in this hoe

by Anonymousreply 18February 26, 2021 6:22 PM

I never knew Superman was an "icon" outside of America. He seems so representative of stereotypical American values. Batman and Spider-Man seem more global and relatable to wider audience.

by Anonymousreply 19February 26, 2021 6:24 PM

Sounds good to me.

by Anonymousreply 20February 26, 2021 6:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2021 6:28 PM

It makes sense if DC is delving into the multiverse. It's canon that there is a Black Superman in the multiverse - Calvin Ellis.

R24

There's Japanese versions of Spider-Man and Batman. So they do change their race. Also, I know Koreans who loved Into The Spider-Verse.

[quote] I always saw Superman as a representation of an immigrant trying to fit into a society that rejects him for being different.

Could you clarify? Superman is not rejected overall in terms of the 80+ year history of the character. He is lionized and lauded in his world.

by Anonymousreply 27February 26, 2021 6:35 PM

And he goes on to live with his grandma, R23.

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2021 6:35 PM

Gabourey Sidibe as Miss Teschmacher

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2021 6:39 PM

Black farmers do exist and aren't uncommon in the South or Midwest. I hope they keep that aspect because the rural black population is underrepresented.

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2021 6:39 PM

R8 I think the problem with Coates is the hpye. Between the world an me was so successful and critically praised than everything he did after that it seemed lackluster. I remember critics and booktubers gushing for The water dance only to be very dissapointed when it was published

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2021 6:43 PM

R11 Black Panther did amazingly well in the USA, in the rest of the worl did very well (but not better than other successful marvel films).

The fact that it was a good film helped for sure.

Anyway, Black Panther is the way to go to add diversity on superhero films. Changing the race of a known character rarely works and i'm not even talking about the awful reactions some fans have when a beloved character is changed.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2021 6:48 PM

They must cast a man with real American roots.

by Anonymousreply 35February 26, 2021 6:52 PM

He's hot.

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2021 6:55 PM

R26, if there's an "American superhero movie", they don't want the characters localized/changed. An "American summer blockbuster" means something quite distinct in East Asia. They want the "authentic American" thing--no localization, not postmodern/experimental PC riffs. See also, e.g., Tokyo Disneyland: they dismissed Disney's localized elements and said "No, we want exactly what you have in America". It's an East Asian thing when it comes to American entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2021 6:55 PM

Who will DL hate more? The black super hero or comic book fans?

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2021 6:56 PM

They seem to prefer to cast British or Australian actors for everything. Even Daniel Kaluuya got a lot of flack for being cast in Get Out and being a black Brit not Afro-American.

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2021 6:56 PM

Disney's *proposed localized elements

by Anonymousreply 40February 26, 2021 6:56 PM

R39, it is curious that a lot of prominent Black actors are not American descendants of slaves. I wonder about that subtle bias.

by Anonymousreply 41February 26, 2021 7:04 PM

Samuel L. Jackson tried bringing up that issue a few years ago and was told to get back in his corner by John Boyega.

by Anonymousreply 53February 26, 2021 9:12 PM

They need to do something different because Superman keeps flipping. People aren’t interested. They’re being Keaton back as Batman for a reason and doing films like “Joker”. They’re bold ideas. Trying to do what Marvel has done (one connected universe) has not worked out for Warner Bros.

by Anonymousreply 54February 26, 2021 9:13 PM

Yes, r53, but Superman, aka Übermensch, was a Nazi concept. Certainly Jews knew about it. Hitler wouldn’t shut up about it.

by Anonymousreply 55February 26, 2021 9:15 PM

The comic-book hero Superman, when Jerome "Jerry" Siegel first created him, was originally a villain modeled on Nietzsche's idea (see "The Reign of the Superman").[citation needed] He was re-invented as a hero by his eventual designer, Joseph "Joe" Shuster, after which he bore little resemblance to the previous character. However, Superman does find an adversary in the mold of the Nietzschean Übermensch in the recurring arch-villain Lex Luthor,[citation needed] his greatest enemy on Earth. Luthor is preceded, even, by a supervillain resembling Siegel's original concept for Superman bearing the synonymous name "Ultra-Humanite". A direct reference to the term occurs in the episode "Double Trouble" of the TV series Adventures of Superman, in which a German-speaking character calls the title character "verfluchter Übermensch" ("cursed Superman").[23] In the tenth season of the show Smallville, an alternate Lionel Luthor refers to Clark as the "Übermensch". Overman is an alternate version of Superman from Earth-10, an Earth where the Axis Powers won World War II.[24]

by Anonymousreply 56February 26, 2021 9:16 PM

Why can’t he just be a big gay Mary? La Belle Cavill would be perfect. Glitter in his hair and a rainbow “S” on his huge tits. No cape, though. I need to see that butt. Lois Lane can be his lesbian bestie and Jimmy is his twink cumslut.

by Anonymousreply 67February 26, 2021 10:11 PM

Here’s my issue with Hollywood’s current obsession with race:

This town has never been notably racist. Money obsessed? Yes. That’s the real reason why so few movies were made about or by minority people - you’d run the risk of your film only being seen by a minority of consumers. Remember, America was largely white for... a long time. So you’d likely make more money pandering to them.

But generally speaking, Hollywood folk have never been notably racist.

Now that has changed.

The current refusal to hire white men for jobs is racism in its purest form. And it’s happening a lot in the business right now. The few white guys in power are desperately trying to seem woke and are actively hiring anyone but white guys.

Many of you will say “boo hoo” or “cry me a river.” Because you’ve decided that every white person is the same and has the same amount of access/privilege/etc. You know, the way racist people assume all black people are the same. If you think this way, you are a racist.

But this new racism is a pretty scary fucking thing when you’re just trying to pay your bills. And you’ve paid to get educated. And hustled to get work without connections.

True equality is opportunity for all. Based on merit and skill or talent. Not because of or in spite of the color of your skin.

The post-woke era needs to start now.

by Anonymousreply 68February 26, 2021 10:35 PM

So this will be Steel (Calvin Ellis), not Superman (Clark Kent). It’s a completely separate story so you can’t be calling it Superman. Just like a movie featuring one of the black Amazons on Paradise Island can’t be called Wonder Woman.

by Anonymousreply 75February 26, 2021 11:33 PM

Steel is John Henry Irons. Calvin Ellis is Superman of Earth-23.

by Anonymousreply 102February 28, 2021 5:39 AM

China doesn’t want woke stuff like this. They want a handsome white guy playing a white American superhero. Same in Japan. They want something they find pleasing to the eye. Dark skin and certain facial features just aren’t pleasing to them. It’s just reality.

by Anonymousreply 109February 28, 2021 9:52 AM

R103 I don't think China will be a problem in this case. Most cases of changing the race (well from white to black because it's always the same thing) ended doing pretty bad on the box office. When you change the race of a character for the sake of it rarely there's a good screenplay behind. There are a good bunch of black superheros, just use those storylines, it worked perfectly fine with Black panther.

R105 Racism or not it's reality. They prefer their foreign actors to be white. I don't understand why they don't use asian actors on blockbusters, but asian actors are largely ignored by Hollywood

by Anonymousreply 110February 28, 2021 10:47 AM

R110

If this is Calvin, it’s not changing the race of the character. It is a different character.

Marvel is coming out with Shang-Chi. Jimmy Woo is pretty important in the MCU. They possibly will even bring in Agents of Atlas, an Asian superhero team.

DC’s biggest Asian superhero is Katana, who was in Suicide Squad. Grace Choi was in Black Lightning.

Superman can be any race.

But instead of creating Black versions of already existing works, can't writers just come up with new original stories?

And I appreciate Ta-Nahisi Coates' works, but his constant race fatalism is tiring. Is white supremacy going to be the Black Superman's kryptonite in this latest version?

by Anonymousreply 125February 28, 2021 6:44 PM

This has actually been in talks for a while, before Ta-Nehisi Coates became involved. And Calvin is NOT Clark. It is a different story and he was actually based on President Obama.

by Anonymousreply 126February 28, 2021 6:51 PM

I wonder if to some extend The Boys stole their thunder in a way (an explicit, super-violent superhero concept) but it would be still worth doing I think. I love Midnighter, one of my favourite superheroes.

As for a black Superman, I have absolutely no issue with that whatsoever I couldn't understand anyone who would. Dude's literally an alien from another planet, his skin colour is irrelevant. As long as he's hot and built I'm 100% behind it.

Sorry, should have been R64 regarding the Midnighter comment, dumb site not allowing edits!

R128 I don't think so.

He is obviously right about Whedon and probably he is right about Hamada too, but he is a very small fish in a very big pond. An A lilst maybe can afford being so loud but not someone like him

I agree with R135. Fisher is a decent actor but he doesn't have enough clout in the business to go after execs. He's not going to be around much longer.

When will they make a midget Superman? Where is the midget representation?

[quote] If Ray Fisher is lying about Hamada and Joss Weadon, why doesn't WB sue him?

Lying about what? He’s never even said what they did wrong.
