These women (and men) come from low-income conservative/religious backgrounds where it's impossible to be openly gay or lesbian. So you have to wonder if they 'check into' prison to live a gay life.

I'm not surprised. There are a few trolls on DL who regularly go on and on about how gay women have it much easier than gay men. Well, gay women are still marginalized by society. Especially the lesbians who don't look or act feminine have a rough time. Straight men are particularly nasty to women whom they don't want to fuck (and to women who don't want to fuck them). And a lot of straight women only want to be friends with women whom men want to fuck (which makes no sense, but that's the way it often is). Imagine being mocked and called slurs and laughed at from age 11 on up. (I'm sure that many DLers can.) It would be easy to give up on society and stop caring about yourself and anyone else on the planet, especially if you don't have a strong support system in your immediate family. And once you lose empathy for other people, you won't feel guilty about committing crimes.

I think that R4 makes a valid point (even though I think the poster may have been joking). Judges and jurors are more sympathetic to women. But, especially in conservative areas, their gaydar may trigger their implicit biases. They may have less sympathy for a woman with masculine traits, and they might even be homophobic.

So I'm not surprised at all that lesbians are disproportionately represented in prison. For me the question is, why are there few gay men in prison, since they are marginalized by society as well? Perhaps the fear of bullying from other inmates helps deter them from committing crimes.

Most crime is committed by men, lesbians have a male mindset, so its hardly surprising that they would also commit more crime. Not to mention that many lesbians just can't follow simple rules. For example, constantly infiltrating DL, a gay mens forum.
