Philadelphia Gay News publishes Op-Ed takedown of Brian Sims

[quote]Now, as he aspires to take on the incredibly vital job of Lieutenant Governor, it’s only fair to ask if he had our back during his tenure as State Rep. Unfortunately, it’s painfully clear that his time has been a spectacular failure on all accounts. Time and time again, when the job demanded that he take the high road and lead by example, he embarrassed not only the voters of his district, but every member of the LGBTQ community in this state and across the country.

[quote]This isn’t hyperbole. If you take some time to do a simple Google search, the results will tell you all you need to know. He has spent the better part of nine years on a national media tour campaigning as a warrior for equal rights, but his record and his actions chronicle just the opposite.

[quote]Almost a decade in the State House, and he has no legislative victories that he can claim as his own. He spent more time out of the district than inside it, flying from one speaking engagement to the next, while abusing his state issued travel budget and being shrouded in a lengthy ethics investigation. Countless members of both the House and Senate refuse to work with him because of his temper and tone (his profane, unhinged tirade while talking to Representative Tom Murt exposed his working demeanor for the world to see), and his penchant for social media stardom unfolded as he accosted a peaceful protestor in front of Planned Parenthood. His actions are a stain on this community.

This Op-Ed was written by Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal:

[quote]In a press release, Murt, R-Montgomery stated that Sims, D-Philadelphia, sent him an “angry” text message, which prompted Murt to call Sims. During the phone call, Murt says that Sims “directly launched a verbal, hostile and threatening attack on me personally, using foul language, screaming at me, and stating that (in this order): ‘I will ruin you.’ ‘You are finished.’ ‘I will get you for this.’ ‘I’m not done with you.’

[quote]Murt said that he wasn’t sure the exact reason for the initial text message, but he suspected that it might have been regarding Murt’s proposal for an LGBTQ Bill of Rights.

Oops. This has been talked about for years. 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 2February 26, 2021 12:04 PM

HOT! Brian is such an Alpha!

by Anonymousreply 3February 26, 2021 12:05 PM

I know, R2. Brian's constituents know too. But here on DL where he's a bear sex symbol you can speak no ill of Saint Brian of the Gayborhood, and if you do you are a freeper Boris troll.

by Anonymousreply 4February 26, 2021 12:12 PM

he sounds like Brian could easily be a poster on DL

by Anonymousreply 5February 26, 2021 12:15 PM

Oh my, such bittahness. Seems almost personal....lol

by Anonymousreply 6February 26, 2021 12:19 PM

Is the writer some Gay Log Cabin Republican and / or did Brian reject him?

by Anonymousreply 7February 26, 2021 12:29 PM

R7, you should really try to deepen your political analysis. Did you read the op-ed?

Brian is disliked because he's a social media grandstander with no work ethic and no track record after 8 years in office. Republicans are few and far between in Philly. No one takes them seriously.

by Anonymousreply 8February 26, 2021 12:32 PM

I've complained about this non-entity for years, but have been roundly criticized here by the "leave him alone, he's so cute and you're just jealous of his hotness" posters, the ones who act like they're 12year old middle school girls. R7 on this thread is a perfect example of that kind of stupidity.

In the summer of 2019, when Hahnemann Hospital and the South Philly refinery both closed and a couple of thousands of jobs were lost, politicians of all stripes and at all levels were trying to do something about this situation. Where was Simms? Parading up and down Commercial Street in Ptown with his long gone boy toy of the second.

And R7, just an FYI: Mark Segal is a gay rights pioneer in Philly and founder of The Philadelphia Gay News. He was working for gay rights before Simms was born. He doesn't even hold elective office, and he's got more power and political influence than Simms can ever dream of.

by Anonymousreply 9February 26, 2021 12:33 PM

When local politicians (including several of Brian's fellow state reps) were at the Pennsylvania Convention Center to observe the vote counting and protect our votes in the days following the November election, where was Brian? At a photo shoot with drag queens. He posted all about it on social media. His fellow politicians were at the center of the battle for our votes while he was off getting his picture taken for the 12 billionth time.

He's an embarrassment to our community, as are his fan club members.

by Anonymousreply 10February 26, 2021 12:39 PM

What could any local politician have done about job losses associated with the closures of Hahnemann and the refinery other than make a fuss to look good for elections? Philadelphia has been bleeding jobs, particularly union jobs for unskilled workers, since factories started closing in the 1950s--but the outlook for healthcare workers is still brighter than ever. The corporatization of health care is a national trend and nobody on city council could reverse the years of fiscal mismanagement at Hahnemann. Sunoco did not properly maintain the refinery, not unlike owners of other refineries in Washington state and CA that have also led to explosions. The refinery was a major source of pollution and should have never been located in the middle of a major city.

by Anonymousreply 11February 26, 2021 12:52 PM

Mark Segal is a hardcore liberal, and GayPhilly is a small town.

by Anonymousreply 12February 26, 2021 12:54 PM

R11, it wasn't about preventing the closures, it was about help thousands of people who had suddenly lost good paying jobs and benefits navigate the system by helping with job hunting, job re-training and assisting with unemployment benefits, as well as helping interns and residents find new internships and residencies when they were simply thrown out in the streets without a lot of advance notice by Hahnemann's owner.

I'm sure a lot of these people lived in Brian's district, but Brian was AWOL, while politicians across the city and at all levels at least pretended to care.

by Anonymousreply 13February 26, 2021 12:59 PM

Whatever happened between him and Mark McKillop? That thirsty Broadway actor he was dating.

by Anonymousreply 14February 26, 2021 1:58 PM

Most gay men are flakes and can’t hold leadership positions. I’m not surprised.

by Anonymousreply 15February 26, 2021 2:32 PM

They broke up over a year ago, R14.

by Anonymousreply 16February 26, 2021 2:39 PM

Phillywhore here...I have been posting that for years about Miss Sims. Brian only cares about himself(and selling himself to Wealthy Bears,Older Men in P-town, Wilton Manors, Palm Springs, Fire Island). How do you think Brian Fundraises for his re-election campaigns!!! There are "Private Parties" given by very wealthy men in the Harrisburg area(outside the city-Harrisburg is a ghetto dump). Some important families in the area whose closeted members like men like Brian Sims(easy politicians). So many stories about Brian Sims. Don't get me wrong, Mark Segal is an "olde fat, useless too"; his time has cum and gone too!!

by Anonymousreply 17February 26, 2021 3:54 PM

Philly whore, you need to tell us more!

by Anonymousreply 18February 26, 2021 4:59 PM

DL might like him more if he was a top.

There’s some gay rights advocate and his weatherman husband in Philly who are friends with him - I’ve seen him posting selfie’s with Sims.

by Anonymousreply 19February 26, 2021 5:11 PM

That's Jonathan Lovitz, R19, and he's very obviously about to run for Brian's seat in the PA house.

by Anonymousreply 20February 26, 2021 5:20 PM

I think the only unfair part of the editorial is that it would have been possible to accomplish something, anything, in the PA State House during the time Brian has been a representative. The Repugs have a stranglehold, nearly a supermajority,, and its leadership is extremely homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 21February 26, 2021 5:40 PM

I have to say that Pennsylvania really is leading the news cycle this month.

First and foremost, an elected representative's main role is to represent his constituents. Ted Cruz found out the hard way what failure to do that can do to your political cache. This gay Dem is no different.

Voters start asking questions when their elected representatives make poor decisions about their priorities. Sure, everyone needs a break from the rigours of office, but choosing a glamorous personal event of a very political once simply is not on.

by Anonymousreply 22February 26, 2021 5:49 PM

Sounds like a right-winger who's pissed that he called out anti-choice wingnuts. Gays won't get anywhere if we don't support out gay candidates who support gay rights.

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2021 6:04 PM

[quote] There’s some gay rights advocate and his weatherman husband in Philly who are friends with him - I’ve seen him posting selfie’s with Sims.

Yes, R20 is correct. It is Lovitz. 🙄 Talk about cringeworthy. Some of his social media posts were comedic gold — unintentionally so. He was worse a few years back, but he still thinks very highly of himself, and let’s you know it. He’s one of those people who, no matter what tragedy or who died, it becomes all about him. And he believes that he’ll be the first gay POTUS.

Unsurprising that he and Sims would be close.

by Anonymousreply 24February 26, 2021 6:06 PM

Lovitz is in big trouble when all his pro-cop tweets from <5 years ago start surfacing.

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2021 6:08 PM

OP is right.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2021 6:30 PM

OP is wrong and probably an anti-choice nut

by Anonymousreply 27February 26, 2021 6:50 PM

Don't forget about John Fetterman....The current Lt Governor running for Senate in 2022(Rethug Toomey's seat). There are at least 2 stories about John and a couple of his WHITE BUDDIES chasing Black man out of Braddock,Pa with a gun while he is still Mayor of that town. Also, the national story about his "Brazilian wife being verbally accosted by the crazy-looking old white trumper-looking woman" was planned to make them look "woke" to the Democratic voters in Pa.

by Anonymousreply 28February 26, 2021 7:08 PM

Hello Phillywhore again I forgot.. I was told about Fetterman& his buddies running the Black guy out of Braddock with a gun about 3 weeks ago by a multimillionaire Democratic contributor. The story with the wife I believe was Phony from the start.

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2021 7:19 PM

Is Bri-Bri term-limited out of his current seat?

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2021 7:28 PM

Other than Adam Joseph from Channel 6(Karl Kraft is his husband)...who is the other gay weatherman you mentioned?

Miss Sims is not term-limited(however, he might be Career-limited)

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2021 7:46 PM

What are the ethics violations? We need receipts.

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2021 8:06 PM

too many words.

Simply put, he’s a fuggo bottom. If we have gay politicians, they should be hot tops.

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2021 8:09 PM

Brian Sims is an attention-whore and a phony. Every word of that op-ed piece was true. Take a look at his social media. There's nothing of him with the people of the district he represents. He is an embarrassment.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2021 8:38 PM

And he wants to be the Lieutenant Governor?

by Anonymousreply 35May 16, 2022 12:36 AM

[quote] Brian is disliked because he's a social media grandstander with no work ethic and no track record after 8 years in office.

What's so terrible about that?

by Anonymousreply 36May 16, 2022 12:55 AM

Politics aside, Sims and Roller-Nazi have a lot in common - stunt candidates (gay football / cripple) who are also extremely handsome. That combo was enough to propel them both into elected offices they are vastly unqualified for.

Since politics is Hollywood for Ugly People all a genuinely sexy candidate has to do is be able to breathe.

by Anonymousreply 37May 16, 2022 1:36 AM

[quote] Other than Adam Joseph from Channel 6(Karl Kraft is his husband)...who is the other gay weatherman you mentioned?

Over a year late in replying, it’s Steve Sosa.

by Anonymousreply 38May 16, 2022 9:53 AM

I guess he's handsome if you like fat bears.

by Anonymousreply 39May 16, 2022 10:44 AM

Any new meltdowns or boyfriend drama.
