I have several friends who lived and worked in Vancouver for several years for work and they hated it. They said the racism was extreme. The whites hate everybody. The chinese hate everybody. It is a cesspool of racism. He said, yeah the mountains are pretty if you like nature, hike, or ski. But it gets old very fast and then there is nothing left to like or do.

Vancouver has mostly Chinese diaspora from Hong Kong and mainland China. These two Chinese groups are the most bigoted and in many cases uneducated. Compare the Chinese diaspora that make up SF bay area’s Silicon Valley, where it’s mostly Chinese diaspora from Taiwan, the difference is night and day. Taiwanese are more tolerant and liberal, and more educated lot compared to the Chinese in Vancouver. Even Taiwanese businesspeople without college degrees are more tolerant than mainland Chinese with degrees. Don’t forget Taiwan is the only Asian nation to legalize gay marriage.

It is also the rich Mainland and Hong Kong Chinese who buy real estate and not live there. Mainlanders will often buy real estate in their kids’ names as business investments. As first generation immigrants they keep to themselves and are very insular that way. They don’t attempt to engage other people in their new country. Part of this is cultural and part of it is uncertainty in how to engage themselves as new residents. Like I said, not a lot of dialogue between the groups.

It seems bullies need a 'target' (usually a minority or other disenfranchised individual) as an outlet for their rage. This week it's Asians, but it doesn't really matter who it is. Haters will hate.
