I just bought my first place and all the walls are white. I like the idea of painted walls (especially gray), but I don’t want to do anything faddish. Do people still paint their walls, and if so, what color?
Are your walls white or painted? What color?

Gray is the epitome of faddish and if you don’t pick the right shade it will look dingey and dirty.
I like a neutral wall but not bright white.

What I wonder is whether people still use wallpaper.

Most of my walls are white, just to emphasize the art and the floor to ceiling windows. In one bedroom, the walls are painted a taupey color. In the office, two walls are covered in a bamboo (I think) weave wallpaper.

I used to loathe white walls.
I appreciate them more now. The problem is that most people use the wrong white paint. There are dozens of shades/tones of white, and people should be as thoughtful about choosing one as they would any other color, eg, what type of natural light does the room get? Is it cool? Or warm?

If the walls aren’t white from paint, I’d like to know what else is covering the walls to give them a white color.

Primer, R6. Although I can't imagine anyone would stop at the primer and not apply the paint afterward.
Having said that, all our hallways are painted white, there's wallpaper in our kitchen striped in an elegant gold/peach/ecru floral pattern. The living room is painted a very pale peach, and the dining room is painted the same color, only a tiny bit paler.
The master bedroom is pale yellow, with the wall behind the bed papered in a matching pale yellow, gold, beige striped design.
One spare room is pale pink, with a pink and white floral wallpaper on one wall. The other spare room is pale blue with a Victorian-looking paper in pale blue and white on one wall.
Both bathrooms are a pale off-white.

Funny, I'm looking at off-white Benjamin Moore colors for my living room at this very moment. I bought 12x12 samples of several because you cannot tell how it'll look from those tiny ones. So far all I've been doing is ruling things out - too much yellow/green/gray undertones. Does anyone have experience with Ballet White? There's supposed to be brown in it.

I’m looking for a classy but brassy boudoir pink, something that says “I’m a hellbilly who can shoot a gun and hold my beer, but but I smell like French lavender and also know a thing or two about opera”.
