Took indigenous Canada with Dan Levy last summer. He moderated all the lectures. Was pretty interesting.

r22 - the takeaway was that canadians are horrible to the indigenous communities. i'm a dumbass american and didn't realize the extent of this. the indigenous professors and guests said canadians love to act morally superior to americans but they are no better. also you aren't supposed to use words like civilized and terms like spirit animals. and don't buy dream catchers or hudson bay blankets. and the canadian government stole all the indigenous artifacts that they use in their museums. and the indigenous have different understandings of wealth (not money) and community and relate differently to nature and animals.

those are the things i remember off the top of my head. the woman who led it is a professor from university of alberta. she is smart and had a cool vibe. and it was fun watching levy moderate because he would occasionally make really dumb comments and some of the guest lecturers (specifically the indigenous women) would give him intense side-eye and seem pained to have to respond to his nonsense. he would pipe up and compare being gay to being an outsider like the indigenous.

I don’t know what I can do. I’m just trying to not be racist, have an understanding of issues that native people in Canada deal with and if I buy native art or fashion inspired by First Nations people I go out of my way to purchase it from actual native people. There’s a lot that needs to be done on a large scale. I don’t know what the curriculum in public school is like these days but I never learned about First Nations cultures until I went to university and actually took a First Nations studies course. A true history of Canada needs to be taught to kids including the unpleasant things that happened like attempted genocide. It gives people an understanding of how we got to where we are.
