FARGO, season 1
I was bored today...still sooo much snow here...and I’m rewatching season 1 of FARGO on Hulu.
I’ve like all seasons to a degree, but this was really the best. The cast! Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Bob Odenkirk, Kate Walsh, Oliver Platt, Keith Carradine, Joey King, Adam Goldberg, Colin Hanks, Glenn Howerton, and the best of all, Alison Tolman. She was phenomenal. I’d never seen her before this. I know she was nominated for an Emmy, but she didn’t win. Shame she didn’t become a bigger star. I watched her other series, but they weren’t great and were short-lived. I wish they would bring her back for another season of FARGO.
There really is something to love about each season. If you watched FARGO, what season was your favorite?

Bullshit, not even close. Season 2 is a goddamned masterpiece. I could barely make it through S1. Hell, I liked S4 better than Season 1. I've been on a Fargo rewatch, too, and just can't convince myself to watch this season again. I really disliked Martin Freeman in this.

Agreed! Alison Tolman was an absolute standout in an admirable ensemble. I'm sorry the show didn't carry her over, but I'm looking forward to watching the later seasons. Great writing, directing, everything.

I love this series. Season 2 was my favorite - the plot, the pacing and the performances were perfect.

Seasons 1 and 2 are excellent. Allison Tolman, Kiki Dunst, Jean Smart, Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Martin Freeman and Bokeem Woodbine were the standouts for me. I've tried a few times to get into season 3 but one Ewan Mcgregor is enough for me. Season 4 had bad reviews so I never bothered.

I agree Seasons 1 and 2 are the standouts. It's hard for me to pick which of those first two seasons is my favorite. Season 4 was decent and better than Season 3, which was the weakest, but I didn't care for Season 4's final episode.

I don't understand the hype around the movie.
Idk. I hate things like this. Seems depressing and sad. Someone murdered for entertainment and people applaud like wow, isn't that great?

watching season 1 now now, Freeman was great as the emasculated husband finally emancipated!
graphic scene warning!

She had it coming. She only had herself to blame.

Loved S1. I actually haven't seen 2 yet and now I'll be sure to watch.

I liked both season 1 and 2, but both dragged in places. 2 gets the edge, even with the Hanks kid sucking the air out of it. Gave up about 5 episodes into season 3. Maybe I'll skip ahead to 4.

Lester the insurance salesman was clearly modelled after Jerry the car salesman from 96 movie, but I think his name Lester was also a nodding to American Beauty, both Lesters were "losers" in the family, transformed from stuck in midlife crisis to freedom and both ended tragically.

Not really. Lester *was* a loser. He only began to score points when he became a murderer.

R12 actually Lester was more than a murderer, he was a psychopath, probably he was always one even beneath that "loser" mentality. When he met Linda, he definitely liked her even bought the tickets for both of them, but once he sensed he might be followed by Malvo, he came out of a plan and used Linda as a lure, deliberately put her into danger to find out whether Malvo was around or not, and Linda was killed just like he had feared, that showed us Lester had no conscience at all.

I'm with you, season 1 was best. Billy Bob was great.

What do you guys think of S3, I'm having a hard time getting into it. Should I keep going?

Season 2 was absolute perfection. Breathtaking perfection. The magnetic Jean Smart stole every scene.
As lambasted as season 4 was, I still enjoyed it.
Fargo is truly the best series out there. Better Call Saul maybe 2nd.

R15 Season 3 is great. Why are you having trouble enjoying it? Is it due to the vulture money-laundering bulimic character David Thewis played? I had trouble with that too.
But Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon were amazing.

watching Season 2 now, unfortunately I can't get into it, it's too theatric for me, season 1 was more "realistic" plot wise, even the music on season 2 is too much and overwhelming.

I really enjoyed Season 2 but Season 1 is the superior season.

Tangentially, Jean Smart is often the best thing in everything she is in. I keep wishing someone would write a screenplay with a juicy supporting part catered to her (a la Allison Janney in I, Tonya) and let her run off with the movie and win the damn Oscar.
