Eldergays, tell me about 1988's "Waiting For A Star To Fall" by Boy Meets Girl

I remember hearing this as a little kid for years on soft rock radio but clearly it was a big hit as it reached #5 on the hot 100

I know the couple wrote Whitney Houston's huge hits "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "How Will I know"

Were you a fan of this song? Does it bring back memories?

extended version

I like the note at the end. I wish they had included that in the single version

Brain-damaging.

by Anonymousreply 2February 19, 2021 5:38 PM

It was meant for Belinda Carlisle, who did a demo but turned it down. I think it was then offered to Deniece Williams, but I don't know what happened there.

They recorded it themselves because no one else would. It's not a bad song.

by Anonymousreply 3February 19, 2021 5:38 PM

No. Breeder Meets Fish.

by Anonymousreply 4February 19, 2021 5:40 PM

I nominate all “Eldergays, tell me about...” trolls for the 2021 Death Pool.

by Anonymousreply 5February 19, 2021 5:41 PM

omg was Belinda high here? Or just hated the song? I know she's not a good singer but this is TERRIBLE

I hated it. Vacuous pop sugar. It was everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 7February 19, 2021 5:42 PM

I (still) love this song. Big hit in Fall 1988. I first heard it on the radio a bunch of times, not knowing the name of the artist/group. I (still) like to watch the music video on YouTube. The group had a good follow-up single called Bring Down the Moon.

by Anonymousreply 8February 19, 2021 5:47 PM

[quote]omg was Belinda high here? Or just hated the song? I know she's not a good singer but this is TERRIBLE

She was totally sober, and that was the problem. I love her records but she's one of the laziest pop stars in the world.

As for the original, it really is a pop classic, up there with Starship's Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now.

by Anonymousreply 9February 19, 2021 5:47 PM

I always liked the song. It was the cool-down track for many an aerobics class back then.

But do I detect that OP may be a publicist? New single out now!

I think this couple (Boy Meets Girl) broke up, right? Maybe I am thinking about the (formerly) married duo, Nu Shooz, with the 1986 smash I Can't Wait...or the (formerly) married duo, Timbuk 3, with the 1986 smash The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.

by Anonymousreply 11February 19, 2021 6:04 PM

It was meant for Whitney Houston (they wrote How Will I Know and I Wanna Dance With Somebody for her as well). But she rejected it. Too bad, maybe then we would've been spared Didn't We Almost Have It All as a single.

by Anonymousreply 12February 19, 2021 6:07 PM

I remember watching that video in 1988 for the first time, and wanting to slap each of them viciously.

I watched it again just now, and that impulse remains the same.

by Anonymousreply 13February 19, 2021 6:16 PM

I remember this shit

by Anonymousreply 14February 19, 2021 6:18 PM

I was a lovesick college junior when this song came out. It was schmaltzy as heck but I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 15February 19, 2021 6:25 PM

the keyboard before each chorus is perfect

by Anonymousreply 16February 19, 2021 6:42 PM

It was so syrupy, but I couldn't help but love it. The melody manages to sound wistful and hopeful at the same time. And I love the singer's voice in the verses. I know he's not the greatest singer, but I can feel the emotion there.

by Anonymousreply 17February 19, 2021 6:58 PM

Belinda wisely passed on it, based on that demo. She can’t hit the notes,

by Anonymousreply 18February 19, 2021 7:13 PM

The ultimate one-hit wonders.

[quote]I think this couple (Boy Meets Girl) broke up, right?

Did they change their name to Boy Ditches Girl?

by Anonymousreply 19February 19, 2021 7:22 PM

It reminds me of winter. I have vague memories of being at a house party where it snowed and everyone had to sleep over. The song was playing on a stereo the next morning as I awakened in a bed to two handsome young men pulling off my pants and molesting me. I didn’t stop them.

by Anonymousreply 20February 19, 2021 7:23 PM

I never liked this treacle.

by Anonymousreply 21February 19, 2021 7:24 PM

The official song of Waiting on line at the CVS Pharmacy!

by Anonymousreply 22February 19, 2021 7:26 PM

Lead singer looks like Woody Harrelson!

by Anonymousreply 23February 19, 2021 7:32 PM

I always get this confused with Life in a Northern Town. I hated that song and it was fucking EVERYWHERE.

by Anonymousreply 24February 19, 2021 7:36 PM

I remember I Want to Dance With Somebody was meant to be a slow love ballad but they turned it into a dance track for Whitney instead.

by Anonymousreply 25February 19, 2021 7:41 PM

Ugh, couldn't change the radio station fast enough!

by Anonymousreply 26February 19, 2021 7:46 PM

It reminds of those simple, stupid days when I thought I’d be young forever and things could only get better.

by Anonymousreply 27February 19, 2021 7:51 PM

I liked this song and still like it. Looking at the video, I shared the same 80's fashion sense as the female half of the duo. They had both been dating a long time, had kids together, and finally got married in the late 80's. They said their parents were thrilled they finally decided to make it legal.

by Anonymousreply 28February 19, 2021 7:56 PM

I love this song but haven't heard this on the radio in years now (in NYC metro). I guess Whitney's team turned it down because it's not really a danceable song nor a ballad. Her 'I wanna dance', meanwhile , seems turning into her most popular song, as far a streaming.

by Anonymousreply 29February 19, 2021 7:59 PM

Loved it. Brought to mind a mad infatuation I had at the time.

by Anonymousreply 30February 19, 2021 8:11 PM

Thanks for the reminder, OP, and the track.

by Anonymousreply 31February 19, 2021 8:14 PM

Pure shit

by Anonymousreply 32February 19, 2021 8:15 PM

Feces

by Anonymousreply 33February 19, 2021 8:15 PM

R31 Sorry, I thought the OP posted the extended track, so thank you R2, and still thanks to the OP for the thread and the reminder of a song I loved.

[quote] Belinda Carlisle

Another one of my favorites; Heaven is a place on Earth".

by Anonymousreply 35February 19, 2021 8:22 PM

I listen to it at least twice a month. Its in one of my 80s playlists . Thats where you belong in my arms baby yeah !

by Anonymousreply 36February 19, 2021 8:23 PM

I kind of love this song..it is so positive and joyous.

by Anonymousreply 37February 19, 2021 8:25 PM

It sounds like it was written for one of those nauseating US Coca-Cola ads.

by Anonymousreply 38February 19, 2021 9:31 PM

The singers voice is painful to hear. He even sounds like he’s in pain. He’s all head notes!

by Anonymousreply 39February 19, 2021 9:38 PM

The cover/remix by Australian duo Cabin Crew was a modest hit in Europe in 2005

by Anonymousreply 41February 19, 2021 10:19 PM

I thought young George Merrill was handsome in a blondy surfer kind of way.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2021 10:24 PM

It was one of those songs that was on the radio all the time but it didn't irritate me at all like, say, "Dont Worry, Be Happy" or fucking "Kokomo". But I never knew who sang it until now. I still like it but, just like then, it's not something I'd seek out. But I wouldn't turn the channel if it came on.

by Anonymousreply 43February 19, 2021 10:34 PM

1988 was a terrible year.

by Anonymousreply 44February 19, 2021 10:40 PM

Dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 45February 19, 2021 11:11 PM

Agreed, R43, compared to “Kokomo” or “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, “Waiting for a Star to Fall” is terrific!

by Anonymousreply 46February 20, 2021 12:17 AM

It pairs well with "Walking on Sunshine"

by Anonymousreply 47February 20, 2021 12:49 AM

really sucks there's no live performances online from 1988. There are only several lip synced tv appearances.

by Anonymousreply 48February 20, 2021 12:52 AM

Oh Girl is a better song, but barely cracked the top 40 in 1985. Can’t get more 80s than this video.

by Anonymousreply 55February 20, 2021 7:07 PM

I think the guy is kinda hot and like his voice.

by Anonymousreply 56February 20, 2021 7:08 PM

It's one of my happy songs. I'm gonna play this as soon as, "Lips Like Sugar" is over.
