Writing for social change – DL fave, Roxane Gay has a new Masterclass for YOU!

Come on, I know you are all clamouring to join this class. If you want to “write better, think deeper and contribute your voice to the world in valuable ways” then this class is for you!

But wait, what is going on in this video here? What’s with the dramatic turn to camera? It’s so ominous!

That Roxane, so bawdy: “I’m never gonna run for office, my past is [italic]filthy[/italic]. So snarky: “Progressive ideas like ‘women are people’ and ‘black lives matter’ and ‘everyone should have healthcare’. So… un self-aware? “For one, I’m incredibly charming”.

(Someone could do an edit of that going straight to all the hundreds of times she said: “Fuck you” to her followers on Twitter.)

One thing going for her, though: her makeup looks GOOD. And actually the part about learning the business of publishing could be valuable. If this were my only exposure to her, I think I’d probably feel warmly towards her.

But knowing what I know, this woman never fails to make me laugh, and unfortunately for the wrong reasons.

Why are lesbians so self-important?

by Anonymousreply 1February 19, 2021 7:22 AM

I kinda feel that when people make a point of writing for social change, 9 times out of 10 it's too on the nose. I always think the story should come first, with the rest enhanced afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 2February 19, 2021 7:38 AM

The only people she was interviewing in that clip were women, so... is it open to everyone or not?

by Anonymousreply 3February 19, 2021 7:26 PM

Roxane didn't take Sting's advice in that video - there's red light all over it!

by Anonymousreply 4February 19, 2021 9:57 PM

I think it’s odd that a feminist is such a fan of the Real Housewives. She’s been a guest on Casey Wilson’s podcast to gush over them more than once.

by Anonymousreply 5February 19, 2021 10:02 PM

Aye, but she's a "bad" feminist. She even wrote a book about it, which got her a lot of acclaim despite being poorly argued (like all her arguments).

by Anonymousreply 6February 19, 2021 10:04 PM

"Don't think trauma is the only thing you have to offer", is probably the most sensible thing I've ever heard come out of her mouth.

But that extract of her own writing she read: "My body is a cage of my own making"? How is THAT sort of writing so acclaimed?

by Anonymousreply 7February 20, 2021 8:28 PM

According to those who've taken the class, it's full of nuggets of wisdom, like:

"I'll read the occasional man. That's where I REALLY get into diversity."

Is the whole thing just Roxane making snarky comments, or is there actual useful advice?

Apparently this course costs $180!! It's surely a bit difficult to write all about how traumatised you are when you have that sort of money to throw away on a writing course during a pandemic where so many have lost work.

by Anonymousreply 9February 24, 2021 10:49 AM

Well, as long as it's a "masterclass" offered via www.masterclass.com.

by Anonymousreply 10February 24, 2021 11:15 AM

I’m guessing publishers are already dreading all the My Pandemic Diary submissions they will be getting. Remember all those My Year Of (tango lessons, living Biblically, having sex every day with my DH)? It will only be worse.

by Anonymousreply 11February 24, 2021 12:54 PM

My uncle says the NYT is now a BLACK newspaper. Does anyone AGREE of disagree?

by Anonymousreply 12February 24, 2021 1:29 PM

College courses should have trailers too.

by Anonymousreply 13February 24, 2021 1:34 PM

She says at the beginning of her video that she's NEVER going to run for office. I bet she will still RUN to the bakery for a DOZEN DONUTS.

by Anonymousreply 14February 24, 2021 1:45 PM

I knew you bitches would be all over this

by Anonymousreply 15February 24, 2021 2:45 PM
"Don't think trauma is the only thing you have to offer", is probably the most sensible thing I've ever heard come out of her mouth.

Agreed, and also I liked that she called Chris Hayes out on his stupid comment about Gina Carano getting fired "for being conservative." These asshole news presenters won't talk to the unwashed masses without a blue checkmark, so Roxane at least can get their attention and sometimes ask the pertinent questions they would ignore otherwise.

Mostly though she's just kind of irritating, an all-purpose personality who isn't really GOOD at any one single thing she does.

by Anonymousreply 16February 24, 2021 3:03 PM

She should be writing to Weight Watchers asking for a refund.

by Anonymousreply 17February 24, 2021 3:04 PM

That thumbnail fills me with absolute terror, for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 18February 24, 2021 3:29 PM

Our little princess is just full of contradictions.

She's a lesbian, but also has or had a thing for Channing Tatum.

Roxane is wasting away to NOTHING!

by Anonymousreply 20February 24, 2021 3:42 PM

Agreed, R13. With dramatic turns to the screen and ominous music too! This trailer is still cracking me up.

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2021 6:44 PM
Our little princess is just full of contradictions.

This is probably the way she justifies how poorly constructed her arguments are. "I'm a mass of contradictions! Just like you!" (puts head in hands and rolls eyes upwards like adorable pixie).

by Anonymousreply 22March 2, 2021 7:17 PM

I am having SIGNIFICANT TRAUMA and need to speak my truth!

by Anonymousreply 23March 2, 2021 7:18 PM

Sorry chair, but all I can hear is a kind of muffled "mmph! mmmph! mmph!" Can you speak up a bit?

by Anonymousreply 24March 2, 2021 7:19 PM

R22- LOL

In her NYT photo Roxane Gay is most CERTAINLY an adorable pixie. NOT

by Anonymousreply 25March 2, 2021 7:21 PM

Were those TATTOOS I saw on her meaty forearms??

by Anonymousreply 26March 2, 2021 7:28 PM

If you're not interested in the masterclass, she'll make you cry for only $95 on Cameo.
You made her Christmas morning! Tears and so much happiness! Thank you!!
I am floored with how much Roxane Gay was able to get out of my message for my wife. Extraordinary. My wife cried, still crying.
Crying the tears of relief I’ve needed after a pressure cooker year. Thank you for an incredibly soulful pep talk, Roxane, I’m going to listen to it daily, making you the “YOU CAN DO IT” voice in my head that drowns out fear.
This was perfect and wonderful. Roxane seemed to effortlessly yet substantively dial into the vibe we were hoping for — encouraging, honest, funny, and celebratory. Some friends saw this and cried. The recipient was speechless and awestruck. Everyone truly appreciated this cameo.
Roxane! The light, warmth and sincerity of your Cameo brought my friend to tears. I am so grateful to you for making this video and holiday so special for us. You’re a treasure and although I didn’t think it possible, we’re even bigger fans of yours now. Thank you!
I’m guessing publishers are already dreading all the My Pandemic Diary submissions they will be getting.

LOL I know someone who is writing one of these and they said that at least two major publishers were interested in it. You'd be surprised at how much of a market there is going to be for this in about a year.

by Anonymousreply 28March 2, 2021 8:46 PM

R27 LOL! What is she DOING to people on Cameo?

by Anonymousreply 29March 3, 2021 6:01 AM

Is she a masterful writer?

by Anonymousreply 30March 3, 2021 7:59 AM

Ow! Ow! Get off me!

by Anonymousreply 31March 3, 2021 5:55 PM

I wonder if she views people's work and gives comments, and every one just has a big red "DO BETTER!" written on it?

by Anonymousreply 32March 3, 2021 6:35 PM

Her pronunciation and repetition of "feral" as she dispassionately phones it in will make Dataloungers cry.

That'll be $95, please. Cha-ching!

Sometimes I wish I had lots of spare cash around just for the purpose of checking out things like this for a laugh. I can't imagine what a Roxane Gay masterclass would look like. Does she read and comment on people's work? I could knock up a brief opening chapter about a woman called "Roseane" (one 'n') who suffers from always being "so tired!" and see if she could provide some pointers.

by Anonymousreply 34March 3, 2021 6:53 PM

"Firal" R33? If you hadn't said it was a weird pronunciation of "feral", I don't think I would've known what the hell she was talking about. That was hilarious - someone paid $95 for that! I love the bit where she goes off on a tangent talking about herself, because that's what the "fierce and firal" birthday girl will want to hear.

I can't stop laughing!

by Anonymousreply 35March 4, 2021 8:53 AM

Give her a break; she grew up with French-speaking Haitian parents. I have two Dutch parents and found out as an adult that I had always mispronounced certain words ("ephemeral," "flaccid," "sepulchre").

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 36March 4, 2021 1:08 PM

I realize that those are not words you use every day, but though officially "bilingual," I know I'm not a 100% native English speaker, and that's because I grew up speaking Dutch with my parents, who made certain grammatical and pronunciation errors typical of non-native English speakers.

by Anonymousreply 37March 4, 2021 1:12 PM

“Writing for Social Change?!” All you have to do is accuse someone of being racist or anti-trans in a single sentence on Twitter and the change happens - that person’s life is ruined.

by Anonymousreply 38March 4, 2021 1:19 PM

Enough of fatties!!

by Anonymousreply 39March 4, 2021 1:35 PM

R36, and yet she got aggressive with someone who disagreed with her once, saying she was "a capable reader and understander of words". So, if she's going to put herself up on a pedestal like that...

by Anonymousreply 40March 5, 2021 5:24 AM

This retarded bitch is just a grifter.

by Anonymousreply 41March 5, 2021 5:36 AM

Love her. A voice for the people. This used to be the norm before all the foreign bots and fake trolls tried to make people feel bad about it.

by Anonymousreply 42March 5, 2021 5:43 AM

You think the voice of the people is a morbidly obese woman who does nothing but blame others for state of being? Which happens to be way better off than the vast majority of the human population, yet demands that others are should lick her boots? yeah, I don't think so.

If she's so smart, why can't she figure out that her constant exhaustion might be related to her weight? Oh, it's because blaming and pointing her fingers at others makes money in the current US market. That's why. That's literally the only reason why.

by Anonymousreply 43March 5, 2021 5:55 AM

What gets me about Roxane is that she doesn't offer solutions or promote anything positive about life. It's just like we're all stuck in misery and everything will always suck and everyone's motives are suspect. Some people respond positively to that, I guess. I would prefer to listen to someone who gets me excited to listen to them and to engage my brain more.

by Anonymousreply 44March 5, 2021 5:57 AM

R43

The fact that some morbidly obese bitch like Roxanne is a superstar for the woke left is proof that the entire movement is intellectually bankrupt.

by Anonymousreply 45March 5, 2021 5:58 AM

Roxane is so hip to how one should write for social change that she can even read minds!
Just finished the Writing for Social Change @MasterClass by @rgay. It’s an amazing class for any writer, but particularly for writers from traditionally marginalized communities because she just gets it. I felt heard and understood just by watching her lectures. 100 recommend it!

THIS is the best piece of advice that girl got out of this masterclass? What a rort!

[quote[Writing for social change doesn’t mean that you need to know exactly what kind of change you want to create, but that you need to have "a sense of purpose." Even if political writing can't change the world, it can change opinions and institutions, which is as close as it gets.

Roxane Gay is a DOLL compared to Nikole Hannah Jones who says that not only are NYC schools SEGREGATED but she says it's APARTHEID.

by Anonymousreply 49March 30, 2021 2:13 PM

What did she say about all men again? I totally forget what it was. It was something that really exhausted her.

Can anyone remember?

by Anonymousreply 50March 30, 2021 2:20 PM

There's been a few things, R50. All men shouldn't wear shorts in October was one of them, another was all men should stop talking at the poker table. But I think honestly anything men do exhausts her, haha.

Never heard of Nikole Hannah Jones, R49. Is she a writer/academic too?
