In all fairness, Austin is normally a great place to live. The music scene is very exciting and the city itself is usually rather manageable. The food has improved dramatically in recent years and the huge influx of a young workforce has made the city rather cosmopolitan by Texas standards.

When you have the money to pull up stakes and go wherever you want, whenever you want, and you're easily bored (as most show biz types are), your willingness to be happy with and find a way to make a go of what you have is greatly decreased.

If that's true for JVDB then that would be incredibly selfish. His kids need stability and security because they're still young.
