'The King's Speech' was directed by an extremely competent director.
One was swept away by the use of Beethoven and the director's good taste, so much so that one was able to ignore Helena Bonham Carter (who frequently gets on one's nerves).

But, yes, The King's Speech was lovely.

R14: be glad you never watched the second one. That was my childhood nightmare film. Just the thought of the scene where the old guy walks up to the house still gives me chills 30 years on. The fact it was in the daytime made it even scarier somehow too.

Star Wars and its sequels (and ‘prequels’).
Titanic.
The Boondock Saints (because some stupid bro once said to me, “You’ve *never* seen that? Dude, it’s a classic!” By all accounts, it’s a ✩✩ affair, not remotely ‘classic’).
Scarface (because it appeals to the same type of people who like The Boondock Saints and Fight Club, and stupid Puerto Ricans).
St. Elmo’s Fire. The Big Chill. Less Than Zero. Metropolitan. Barf.
The Gods Must Be Crazy, Caddyshack, Meatballs, Animal House. Shown on HBO in the mid/late 80s incessantly, fawned over by knuckleheads.
Face/Off + any other dumb Nicolas Cage action or sci-fi movies.
The Godfather or any of its sequels. Why movies that glorify the fucking mafia are so popular with American film audiences is beyond me. Who cares about those amoral assholes and their stupid drama?
Harold & Kumar.
All comic book hero movies. All Disney movies from the late 80s onward.

A lot of those 80's movies were crap. I guess you liked crap.

Wow, you guys. There's a lot of hate here for The Godfather. Considering that most critics considered Mario Puzo's best-seller a tough nut to crack as a film, I thought Coppola did an outstanding job turning a riveting story on the page into a stellar movie saga for the ages. If you dismiss it as nothing more than an unnecessary glorification of Mafia culture, then you missed the point. For one thing, most contemporary crime stories made for the big screen since then owe their existence to Coppola's vision.
And having read these lists, I gather many of you would rather while away your free time with videogames.
I happened to like the Harry Potter films, especially after reading the books. And while we're on the subject, I consider the sixth, or penultimate, film the best of the lot. The last book was dense with imagery and, I thought, spoiled by the swoony teenage angst of the main characters. But the thrust of the final book, apart from the showdown between Harry and Voldemort, was an epic quest.
And that's what made the sixth film IMHO unique. On the page, the search for horcruxes seemed repetitive and endless. But the movie incorporated animation and other visuals that were, to me, ground-breaking for the series.
Also, the acting in Notting Hill was outstanding, and better than in all of the other Curtis-penned films, with the exception of Emma Thompson's jilted wife in Love Actually. Her scene of heartbreak at discovering her husband's infidelity was a master class.
As far as movies I regretted seeing: anything with the Ernest character. I walked out of "Ernest Goes to Jail."
And I loathe anything involving the supremely untalented Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler.

R42 we watched Uncut Gems a few nights ago and didn't know what the hell we were watching. I thought it was going to be a comedy. I don't even get the point. Was it just against sports betting or did it symbolize something? Then we watched something tonight (can't remember name) with Adam Sandler and David Spade (who or whom I tend not to like). Some okay ideas but a really bad movie. I guess they are putting stuff on Netflix that they were never going to release but people like me will watch almost anything now. I used to like Adam Sandler somewhat.
As for Will Ferrell, how can you not like him? Everything he does is funny. Just looking at him is funny. We watched Eurovision this week too, and that was actually much funnier than I expected.
Sorry I'm not following thread directives here.

There were a whole bunch of popular middlebrow Hollywood films from the late 1980s and 1990s that won Academy Awards for Best Picture that I know I will never see--they reputedly almost all involve sharing, and also, caring:

Forrest Gump
Rain Man
Driving Miss Daisy
Braveheart

"Distant Voices, Still Lives." I just watched it on Mubi a few weeks ago. One of the most depressing films I've ever seen. It's not an awful film (actually, it's very well made with stellar acting). I guess I should've read up about it before seeing the film. Had I known it would be this gloomy film about a drunken Irish Catholic father who abuses his wife and kids and causing them great psychological damage as adults, I would've avoided it completely.
