Twitter and America's new outrage culture - Will this stupid website lead to civil war?

The Ted Cruz story made me think about how insane the country has become with the s flash-fire, super-sensitive anger hysteria America has sunken into. This cannot continue much longer without a meltdown. Can it?

When and why did Twitter come to dominate the national conversation and the headlines on a daily basis? If you take this Ted Cruz thing as an example, the media has suddenly blown-up with stories about "Calls for Cruz resignation for going to Cancun!" and "People are outraged". But let's face it, those "people" are essentially a few Lay-Z-Boy social activists posting to Twitter. The media has become so lazy, journalism is so absent, that whatever stories we hear on any given day seem to be scraped from Twitter.

It's as though they'll find someone outraged or upset over whatever fits a narrative they want to promote, they publish these as legitimate stories about the mood of the general public, copycat outrage begins to spread across the country and people who might otherwise never given two thoughts about a topic, are now convinced they're outraged. It's as though Twitter is a headline and movement factory.

Anything that some smattering of people may say on the platform can easily become the most gripping headline in the U.S. . Meanwhile, the Chinese are doing their thing, waiting for the day we'll all be too preoccupied to care whether or not they start coming over California's western horizon.

Twitter and America's obsession with it, and all the seriousness it's given, really terrifies me.

And yet NO ONE really does anything about it. THEY get away with it because we are lazy FAT fucking Americans.

F&F you OP...you're worse than Hitler!!!

by Anonymousreply 2February 18, 2021 5:29 PM

Slutlana OP is fisting herself furiously with a matryoshka doll. Sounds like Parler and the Daily Fail Royal tabloids are more her style

I don't know; you tell me.

by Anonymousreply 4February 18, 2021 5:32 PM

Let’s see....people attacking Ted Cruz on social media is what has instigated your wackadoo diabrite? And you’re sympathetic to Cruz?

You know OP, you’re not playing with a full deck. You’ve got splinters in the windmills of your mind. Someone blew out your pilot light.

by Anonymousreply 5February 18, 2021 5:33 PM

We've had some weird defenders of Ted Cruz on here this morning, one was a Websleuths lady over here for the Delphi murders thread, and now we've got THIS guy.

Twitter's one redeeming quality is that it helps propagate stories like this which are important and might otherwise fly under the radar, had no journalist known about the trip.

by Anonymousreply 6February 18, 2021 5:37 PM

I have to be on Twitter for my job but it’s the first thing to go when I retire next year. PUNCH and DELETE. The outrage against Cruz’s vacation is certainly warranted, but it’s also, by far, not the worst thing he’s done. It’s just Twitter-friendly, the easiest of targets provoking the laziest of responses.

by Anonymousreply 7February 18, 2021 5:40 PM

It's not Twitter friendly, it's an easy, uncomplicated way to show people how corrupt and irresponsible Cruz is.

That's what you need in politics. Too many people are unable to fully grasp his role in the insurrection because it's not easy, black-and-white and obvious, it's kind of convoluted.

To get rid of a shit like Ted Cruz, you need something big, something inexcusable, and something easy to understand. That's what this is.

by Anonymousreply 8February 18, 2021 5:42 PM

The Cruz outrage is kind of unfair. He’s a federal legislator and does not have any direct role in responding to the crisis. But his colossal stupidity is remarkable.

Hardly.

Who the fuck is defending Ted Cruz on Datalounge?

by Anonymousreply 10February 18, 2021 6:01 PM

R10 The ROTTEN CUNT OP is defending Rush Limbaugh on other threads which tells you all you need to know

by Anonymousreply 11February 18, 2021 6:03 PM

i agree with OP 100 per cent and glad he stated what's been on my mind lately. This feeding frenzy off of this Cancun trip is bizarre. Not a Cruz fan either.

by Anonymousreply 12February 18, 2021 6:05 PM

OP might be a right-wing troll, but you don't have to be either right-wing or a troll to think that Twitter is a fucking cesspool.

by Anonymousreply 13February 18, 2021 6:33 PM

Finger that wet pussy, Sveta. Keep on fingering it. Back in the real world, it has always been news when politicians fail to live by the values that they seek to impose on others. It’s also always been news when politicians who think they have the common touch reveal themselves to out of touch autocrats. This has nothing to do with Twitter. It s a GOP thing.

by Anonymousreply 14February 18, 2021 6:36 PM

R13, the people who complain about Twitter are the ones who are on Twitter 24/7. If you don't like it, don't use it.

And the conservatives who bitch about "outrage culture" are the ones who got outraged over Kaepernick and Nike
