Isn't Janet bisexual?
Janet has done some very gay things. Like she had vogue dancer Willi Ninja in her music video "Alright", that music video "Your Love Will Never Do" looked like softcore gay porn, "You Want This" featuring MC Lyte seemed like a lesbian anthem, most of The Velvet Rope was just gay, bi and lesbian anthems like her cover of "Tonight's The Night", the AIDs tribute song "Together Again" and anti-homophobia song "Free Xone". The songs "Feedback" and "Rock With U" on Discipline were clearly made for her gay fanbase and Janet was pulling off some drag queen looks in that era.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 18, 2021 2:01 PM |
She once said that she had crushes on women when she was a teen, and rumors abounded that she had flings with Tina Landon and her former dancer Shawnette Heard.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 19, 2021 12:38 AM |
I’m really starting to come around to the idea that if Michael had been more prolific Janet never would’ve had a career.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 19, 2021 7:34 AM |
R27 Neither would La Toya, Rebbie or 3T. Maybe Jermaine since he can actually sing.
Janet is more of dancer and not much of a singer. I think most of us agree that her relationship with Michael is what opened up the door for her career. Starting with that Jackson Variety Show in 1976. She was mostly an actress after that and tried to do the teen pop albums to capitalize on her success on Fame. But those albums flopped and fired Joe Jackson as her manager.
Prince should be given credit as well because Janet sought to work with him but instead got his two ex-bandmates Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to produce her next album Control which was a concept album about a young woman taking control of her life. It had the Minneapolis sound and the music videos showcased her excellent dance skills and the rest was history.
I think Janet should be given credit for taking control of her career and coming up with concepts for each project. She reinvented herself each era up until All For You. Nepotism got her career started but I don't think it kept it going especially after Michael became such a weirdo. Janet was seen as the normal one in the family and was a sex symbol for years.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 19, 2021 8:00 AM |
Even if Michael was more prolific I don't think he had the emotional maturity to grow as an artist. His lyrics were often simple and he used a lot of his trademarks and cliches. His music really peaked with Thriller and I think the spacing of his albums helped hide his weaknesses because the public was so starved for him. I prefer Janet's music because she sings about real adult topics and she did experiment with a lot of different sounds.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 19, 2021 8:08 AM |
I agree. But Janet started to regress with All For You. With that her music started to sound like Mya's cast-offs.
What happened?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 19, 2021 8:39 AM |
Rene left her, she started fucking Timberlake and then hooked up Jermaine Dupri. Fired Jam & Lewis and had Dupri produce her stuff. Janet was dickmatized

Jam & Lewis were producers on All For You, Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. as well, though. So maybe Janet was just naturally coming to the end of her moment du jour?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 19, 2021 9:46 AM |
^Actually, I'll clarify that, cause I'm just reading that All For You was the last album where she was in an exclusive contract with Jam & Lewis producing the majority if not all of the album. Still, it isn't a patch on the earlier albums, so I still feel that things couldn't have been maintained even if she had stayed with them for the most part.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 19, 2021 10:41 AM |
2O Y.O. and Discipline were Jermaine Dupri hence why they sounded like generic 2000s R&B albums..
All For You and Damita Jo were in my opinion, above average. The dip in quality after Damita Jo was jarring.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 19, 2021 11:12 AM |
Lewis and Jam are still producers listed on 20 Y.O. but Dupri is the main producer. Discipline is all Dupri and Darkchild. I think Janet's biggest muse was Rene because she was at her creative peak in the 90s. When they split she wanted to express her sexuality more openly. It's comparable to Mariah and Tony. Mariah went all sexual to indicate her freedom but like Janet she was aging and the audience got tired of it.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 19, 2021 11:23 AM |
[quote] [R27] Neither would La Toya, Rebbie or 3T. Maybe Jermaine since he can actually sing.
Well, Rebbie was a one hit wonder and LaToya never really had any success. But Jermaine was scoring solo hits before the Jacksons disbanded and was continuing to do so before Thriller hit. I think Michael's success may have given him a small boost, but it was more likely that the Victory album and tour helped more. Jermaine sang lead on a lot of those songs and had something of a comeback in 84, lasting for another couple years.

I had never heard anything from Damita Jo until last night (I kinda lost interest in her after The Velvet Rope for no reason except tastes changing), just checked out a few songs - there is some really catchy stuff there! I was quite surprised. I haven't listened to the album yet, but the bit I heard makes it sound in some ways more interesting than All For You. The only thing is the sex stuff is so boring by now and every song seems to be about it. It worked on janet, but is definitely overdone by now. Still, I was pleasantly surprised at how catchy I thought Damita Jo was so far.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 19, 2021 7:25 PM |
Damita Jo had a lot of good songs like All Nite, SloLove (should have been a single!), Strawberry Bounce and I Want You. The issue is it's just too long and Janet does overdo the sex part. A lot of the aging divas in the 2000s went overboard with the sultry sexiness like Toni, Mariah and Kylie. Madonna on the other hand was still trying to act like a teenybopper.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 19, 2021 8:13 PM |
Mariah also did the same mistakes as Janet trying too hard to be the sexy older woman which alienated a lot of her older fanbase

They didn’t “start playing it again.” It’s an iconic album. People are always sampling and remaking its songs. Janet's CD 'Unbreakable' has produced a conversation about the ethics of marketing in the music industry. [Photo by Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images]"Janet Jackson's chart-topper this week was aided by the 30k units that were part of a ticket bundle for her tour, which explains why the album sold so well with virtually no airplay. The veteran artist and her wealthy husband, fashion mogul Wissam Al Mana, who financed the recording and underwrote her Rhythm Nation label, had shopped the album to the majors but got nary a nibble, enabling BMG to pick it up," the article claimed. It only got worse from there. Once the album started tumbling off the charts, a copy of Unbreakable was being given away with the sale of every single t-shirt and other concert souvenirs. Sales were reported as part of a bundle, which allowed the album to climb back up the charts, but several allegedly claimed there was no increase in the original price of the t-shirts. Some fans weren't intending to buy Unbreakable and were surprised about receiving a "free" CD.
"@JanetJackson Bought a tshirt at the #unbreakablesantabarbara show tonight got a free CD," tweeted Chef TK Kyle.
However, others who received the free Unbreakable CD were angry Janet Jackson unfairly used them to help her CD chart.
"I attended a show of hers at the Chicago Theater and bought a t-shirt. I didn't want a copy of her CD. But it was given to me anyway. That's all fine, but then the guy managing the souvenir stand admitted that the entire purpose of giving fans free CDs was so Janet's album could climb back up the charts. I left in disbelief, but did research and found out this is all true," wrote an alleged fan on Change.org, petitioning for Billboard to stop allowing chart manipulation tactics.
Then, when that didn't work, music industry site Showbiz411 reported that Janet Jackson now started giving away free CDs with the purchase of Uber rides. So, one wonders how an album charts if it is given away for free? It appears, according to Janet Jackson's website, Uber charges a $3.49 "service fee." The $3.49 service charge is just enough money for Billboard to count the exchange as an album sale. It's a desperate and dirty tactic that should be condemned not only from Billboard, but the record industry as a whole.

Don't you, Jabba, ever get tired of me making a complete ass out of you? Scratch that--you make an ass out of yourself every time you decide to put finger to keyboard for one of your stupid posts in every Janet thread. And I do mean EVERY Janet thread. But stay pressed. It's what you do best.

The truth is JanBot hates Janet Jackson. It absolutely loves posting wildly exaggerated nonsense about Janet's accomplishments and influence to bait people into posting the truth. A real fan would be happy with Janet's successes and not constantly try to invite unfavorable comparisons of her to other artists.

What a freak occurrence. Hope the bitch enjoyed the fleeting few minutes it happened. It’s nearly completely unlikely to ever happen again.

Sorry R115, but if you think anything from Inquistitr.com or whatever it's called is the gospel, then I've got a shitload of wooden nickels to sell you. Unbreakable was a #1 album. Point blank, period, the end. That this fact bothers you so much is pathetic. Maybe you should seek treatment.

Here's some really random and boring gossip. Back in the early 90s, when I was just out of high school, I was working at TGI Friday's in a south Minneapolis suburb. Janet was recording with JJ and TL at that time and they (Janet, JJ and TL) used to come into TGI Friday's on the regular with an entourage and insist upon sitting in the corner table in the window (no passersby were there, just a parking lot). They would always just order a bunch of stuff for the table and always always a few orders of the loaded baked potato skins.
We got all sorts of randos in there for some reason. I waited on Willie Aames there once too, in head to toe acid wash denim.
Man those were the days.. I used to go to after parties at Paisley Park sometimes too. Prince was a trip, man.

R143 is a classic example of Jabba logic. Because some crazed fan titled a YouTube Video "Queen of Pop, Janet Jackson" then it must be true.

[quote] Nobody in mainstream culture has given two fucks about Janet Jackson in two decades
In the last 20 years, Janet released five albums, 3 of which debuted at #1, had a #1 NY Times Bestselling book, toured the world, won many awards and was inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame, was declared an MTV Icon, starred in several movies, and has continued to inspire the children. But you already knew that. And, you tried it (and failed).
by Anonymous | reply 148 | February 26, 2021 2:17 AM |
The charts don't mean as much as they did once the digital era started.
Right now Morgan Wallen has the #1 album.
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 26, 2021 2:24 AM |
After the physical media era ended and downloading/streaming became the norm, a wet fart could have a #1 song.

She was complicit in her brother's molestation of boys. She had to have known what was going on, yet did nothing. That's unforgivable.

Jabba's facts: Janet's albums were successful because they went to #1
The rest of the world's facts: Janet's albums were flops because even though they hit #1, they fell off the chart within a month and sold nothing.

by Anonymous | reply 158 | February 26, 2021 9:47 AM |
All of Janet’s 90s albums were huge smashes. All For You was a massive hit.
I’m tired of people pretending she wasn’t successful.
PS her .Janet album is the second best selling album from a female artist the year it was released. Stop trying to knock her.
Also, to the posters who keep on mentioning she was “old” trying to express her sexuality (and Mariah too), she (and Mariah) were in their 30s. You’re acting like they were what Madonna is now. No.
It’s totally normal for a woman to be sexual in her 30s. That’s usually when their peak sexuality kicks in, unlike men, where we peak in our teens and 20s. Women get more of a sexual drive as they age, men get less of one.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | February 26, 2021 11:00 AM |
Agreed, R159. They’re just a bunch of OLD, envious, nelly, white queens.

Janet asking some guy if he can swim after he asks her if she'd be worried that he might drown. I think she would tell most of you to jump over the railing.

Janbot is an eldergay himself, which is funny because he's always harping on OLD queens.
No youngsters are rhapsodizing over Janet Jackson.
And nobody is arguing that she wasn't successful. She certainly was, but she's been irrelevant on the mainstream pop culture scene since the turn of the Millennium. She's been an urban niche artist ever since.
