Is Tim Allen really a movie star, though? Yes I know he voiced Buzz Lightyear, but do people see him as a movie star? He did the same stuff he does in his tv shows about tinkering with tools, family life, etc. He actually was one of the funniest acts I’ve ever seen; I was with a bunch of friends and they agreed, he was incredibly funny. I knew he was going far. His tv shows, however, are not even close to being as funny as he was when I saw him. Or even funny at all. Big disappointment.

He starred in one of the most popular shows of the 90's that lasted for 8 years (HOME IMPROVEMENT) and went on to star in LAST MAN STANDING which last for 10 years. He's also been a high-profile guest star on many other hit shows and overall is one of the most recognizable faces on TV for the past 30 years. I can understand not liking Tim Allen (I have never watched his shows or seen his movies) for whatever reason but he's definitely a star.

The man has unpleasant politics and imo a tendency to humdrum and softfooting in terms of his comedic styling, but there’s no denying he did tap into something ubiquitous and resonant about straight-male culture. Part of being a popular and insightful comic is understanding how everyday people tick and lampooning that, which he did in spades.

From 94-07, Tim Allen starred in 9 studio films. Not including the Toy Story franchise. Several were hits, a few were failures, a few moderately performed. Galaxy Quest is a classic. The three Santa Clause movies were all huge hits. Wild Hogs (which is terrible) made over $100 million. And BIG TROUBLE, which is great, ended up a victim of post 9-11 skittishness. It cost $70 million and revolved around a b*mb on a plane and was initially supposed to come out soon after 9/11. Reviews were still good.

He's had two syndicated sitcoms. The money in syndication is crazy. He probably made $250 million off Home Improvement and same off Last Man Standing (much smaller pot of $ but his deal out of the gate was probably exponentially more generous than what he got before Home Improvement started).

Then Toy Story. He got $50k for the first one. He's easily earned $100 million off the next three. And he probably spends a month promoting each one and only a few days doing voice. Funny to think he made $100 million off less work than any one of his 9 movies and earned more than he did for all 9 movies combined.
