The Free Me album is a great pop album. It was a great era for pure British pop music - Girls Aloud, Kylie, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Rachel Stevens, Sugababes, Jamelia.

It was nothing Swing Out Sister weren't doing 2 decades earlier, but it was great pop music.

No Sign Of Life is a great Bond movie title, and No Sign Of Life is a great Bond theme.

Geri's Calling shows her vocal limitations but it's a lovely song.
And to think Geri's finest solo song was never released as a single.

‘What Took You So Long?’ was inescapable when I was eight years old. I mean for an entire year in Britain, it was EVERYWHERE—car radios, tannoys in shops and malls, cafés, fast food restaurants, offices, cinemas, bowling alleys (remember those..).
It’s a nice formative memory to have, though. Kudos to Bunton and the composers/producers, for a delicious bit of catchy alluring chanteuse pop that holds up.
Also, Emma was really sexy in the video. I didn’t know I was a lesbian back when it saw it, but I kept the memory with me...

Emma has the most interesting and attractive voice of the Spices, imo. She sounds soft, sweet and inviting for the most part, while still managing to emote and give a bit of welly when necessary.
Mel C has power, but her voice is unpleasant nasal blare; Geri’s voice comes off too creepy and cynical for mainstream pop; Mel B just yells; the less said about Queen Vic’s ‘singing’, the better.

Free Me is a great pop album. Interesting that it predates the 60s revival sparked by Amy Winehouse by a few years. The only song I'm not keen on is "Amazing", which I would replace with the B-side "So Long".
At first, I thought Life in Mono was a weak follow-up, but it's grown on me over time.
