The Gays and Tennis: the Official Aussie Open Thread - Part II
by Anonymous | reply 332 | February 20, 2021 6:55 PM |
From Part 67:
Well the aussie open is paywalled so i suppose we'll comment here till someone opens another thread.
I hope that Zverev is able to eliminate Nole. The fact Berrettini retired when he supposely has the same injury than Novak doesn't make Djokovic look good.
If Dimitrov let Karatsev play comfortably he is toast. Grigor is not big enough to intimidate his rival so he better play at a very good level from the beginning.
Medvedev- Rublev match is interesting, the difference in the US Open was not that clear and Andrey had his chances. Daniil is the big favourite but if he plays like in the thir round he is toast.
And i expect Tsitsipas at leas to give a good fight. His backhand return is too weak and Nadal will use that in his favour. He need to play very well from the beginning to have any chance
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 15, 2021 6:38 PM |
Was glad to see Grigor playing well. He seems also to have beefed up a bit, so many he's trying to become a serious contender. Would love to see him go far.

R19 see link. There's a better article, with corroboration from one of Zverev's (ex-I'd think) friends and their mother. The idiot mother actually re-united the girlfriend with Zverev thinking it was just 'couples trouble' and then finding out differently.

Serena def. Help 6-3 6-3
it was a great performance by Serena. I was surprised she was able to win several of the key long rallies. Help to her credit was able to absorb many of Serena's powerful blows but then Serena either hit a winner or forced Help to make an error.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 16, 2021 8:39 AM |
Yep ā Serena was in excellent form against a pretty in form herself Help. Osaka I think will be a pretty big challenge but I think Serena won the last time they played - pretty sure Patrick McEnroe just said that. Should be a good one. Already looking forward to it.

Zverev won the first set by the smallest of margins in the tiebreak. Now novaxx is up 3-0. We shall see. The problem with Zverevās t-shirt is that it makes him look as if he is doing construction work instead of playing tennis. It also looks dirty. He needs an image consultant! (Among many other things)
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 16, 2021 10:22 AM |
The take out from R32 linked article is that Alexander Zverev has diabetes type I. I had no idea. It's also seemingly common knowledge and discussed on reddit. It could explain some of his inability to really compete in BO5.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 16, 2021 5:35 PM |
R77 wow. Wasn't it his right oblique that was badly strained and initially thought to be torn? Obviously it's not torn but if his abs were hurting him, you'd think he wouldn't have had the ability to smash his racket off the ground. Surely striking the ground with all your strength would make an ab injury worse.
Go Karatsev
by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 16, 2021 5:37 PM |
I was listening to a podcast that had coach Calvin Betton on it and he didn't mince his words re Djokovic's "injury". There's basically no way in hell anyone with that kind of injury could play like he has been and it's so obvious that was why he got so defensive when questioned about it.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 16, 2021 5:44 PM |

Maybe Jennifer Brady, but nobody talks about her lol...she reached the SF at the US Open
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 16, 2021 6:43 PM |
Karatsev doesn't have any chance against Nole. For sure he is able to hit winners but he only is in semis because Felix choked and Grigor was injured.
Generally this type of surprise run ends in a big lose.
And i like the storyline of the underdog but just like Sandgren i can't be excited for him. He has a story of fixing matches, and frankly he is not a young and exciting new player. He is strong and aggressive player and he belongs to top 50 but i doubt he'll have another run at a GS like this.
I'm not on the mood for another Nole-Rafa but frankly only Medvedev can stop that
by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 16, 2021 6:46 PM |
The Brady vs. Pegula match will be interesting. Firstly they're good friends. When it comes to style of play, Brady is a huge power hitter. Her first serve is decent and her forehand is huge. Her backhand is very hit or miss though. Pegula is not very tall or fast but she takes the ball very early with hard, compact strokes and redirects it away from her opponents. Pegula is kind of like a Bartoli-type player except with a 1 handed forehand.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 16, 2021 6:57 PM |
I really liked Brady at the US Open last year.
Anyway, anything that won't be Barty on the final in that part of the draw will be a huge surprise

by Anonymous | reply 90 | February 16, 2021 8:29 PM |
We'll see whether Tsitsipas' backhand can hold up against Nadal's relentless pounding or if he's able to get more forehands. Also key is how well or poorly Nadal serves and if Tsitsipas puts pressure on second serves

by Anonymous | reply 113 | February 17, 2021 8:15 AM |
men's tennis continues to be pathetic and boring. Nadal and Djokovic are now both into their mid-30s and both claimed to have been injured in this tournament. Unless the most shocking double SF upset in history happens, we're going to get yet another fucking dull final between those 2. When will it end? When the fuck will the younger, hyped up guys step up and beat them? It's not a problem having Nadal and Djokovic in the mix at every slam since they're 2 of the 3 best ever, but the fact that they're STILL dominating? that's pathetic for the tour. It makes no sense that guys in their 20s who should be in their physical peaks cannot outlast them and/or overpower them at this point.

by Anonymous | reply 124 | February 17, 2021 12:37 PM |
Couldn't watch the match, unfortunately, but for those who did, was it more a case of Nadal wilting in the 5th or Tsitsipas upping his (mental) game?
TIA.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | February 17, 2021 12:42 PM |
R125 I'd argue Tsitsipas upped his game, but it was a great match from both. We all know Nadal in full flight is unplayable, but Tsitsipas in full flight (on a hard court) is up there with him.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | February 17, 2021 12:47 PM |
R125 Combination of both really. Rafa got a bit tired and tight ā. started making un-Rafa like errors and Titsy relaxed and upped his physical and mental game. The first 2 sets Rafa was large and in charge and it seemed like we were headed for a blowout. Titsy started playing better in 3rd - won the tiebreaker and the tide was turned. Rafa looked kind of mortal by the end.
Ok itās almost 6am here in San Francisco. Iām gonna sleep and get ready for Serena.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | February 17, 2021 12:50 PM |
R127 2pm here in London so I'd better get on with some work. Goodnight maximdw!
by Anonymous | reply 128 | February 17, 2021 1:12 PM |
R125, after Tsitsipas won the tiebreak in the third, Rafa seemed to suddenly age. Tsitsipas looked young and confident and was bouncing around. Rafa looked fatigued; he repeatedly let balls go that he once would have hunted down. His concentration was off, too; he made quite a few unforced errors, including missing some easy overhead smashes. Maybe it was the effect of rust, or not having challenging opposition earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | February 17, 2021 1:25 PM |
Now can Tsitsipas or Medvedev beat Djokovic?
by Anonymous | reply 130 | February 17, 2021 2:30 PM |
So glad Tsitsipas won. I watched the highlights. Definitely Tsitsipas looked fresher after he won the tiebreak. It's unusual, but it seemed he wore Nadal down, not the other way around. I don't think Nadal likes to get in these five setters anymore. He seems to get nervous. Medvedev really should have won their 5 setter at the US Open in 2019. The reviews of the draw I read called it right. They all said Nadal had a pretty easy path to the quarters (some said to the Rd of 16), but then it would get tough if the draw held. Most said they thought it would be tough for Nadal to get through both Tsitsipas and Medvedev if the draw held. Guess they were right!
R130, yes, they can. Medvedev has won three of his last four matches against Djokovic. Tsitsipas has beaten Djokovic twice on hard courts and took him to five sets in the semis of the 2020 French Open. They both have a shot.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | February 17, 2021 2:33 PM |
Here's to Tsitsi for the Big W and to the end of R114's whine.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | February 17, 2021 2:36 PM |
I'd like to see Nadal win one more French. If (at least) between them Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem plus one or two others can be counted on to take at least a couple of Grand Slams each year over the next couple of seasons this just might mean Novaxxx never gets to rack up 22 slams before his body finally implodes. I will literally DIE if he ever becomes the statistical GOAT!
by Anonymous | reply 133 | February 17, 2021 2:46 PM |
I can't stand Djokovic as a person but have to admit his tennis is stellar and he deserves his place in the Big 3. No-one can return like him and he's an incredible athlete. If he gets the numbers I'd have to grudgingly respect him as the GOAT considering the competition he was up against.

I automatically assume all Russian players are doping. As all the others drop from injuries, the only 2 who seem fine are Medvedev and a qualifier who has some of the fastest hitting speeds on the tour?
Systematic doping in Russian sports has resulted in 47 Olympic and tens of world championships medals being stripped from Russian competitorsāthe most of any country, more than four times the number of the runner-up, and more than 30% of the global total. Russia also has the most competitors that have been caught doping at the Olympic Games, with more than 200.[1]

Tennis players have a lot of controls over the year. This is not a federation Russia have any power, and most of them live and train in other countries (Medvedev in France, Rublev in Spain).

The Zverev match was amazing. He was down 0-3 twice. It seemed like he played from behind in almost every game facing 12 break points and saved 9 of them. I see Zverev as the next Berdych.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 17, 2021 3:55 PM |
amazing job from Tsitsipas to fight back! This has to be Nadal's only loss up 2 sets, right?
Thank goodness for Stefanos and his strut around the court. I'm glad he got the walkover from Berrettini now so he was rested. I hope he can recover for the SF. I'd love to see him win but it seems too tough to take out Nadal, Medvedev and Djokovic
at least no more Djokovic-Nadal finals this time
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 17, 2021 4:28 PM |
R148 no surprise for that piece of shit
Zverev along with Djokovic was bitching after their match about the tough AO restrictions and blaming them on all the injuries. The AO has done it's damnedest to put on a tournament and help the players. It's like they were expecting everything to be 100% perfect.

That Miami match was Rafa's coming out party. He was thought of as a clay only. This was during Federer's nearly unbeatable stage and the Latino crowd was amazing. One of the ONLY matches that Fed wasn't the favorite. It's amazing with all his trophies that Miami is the one that got away. -

R139 There are sports where the government has a lot of power llike athletism or swimming. They have zero power over tennis. Russia never was a powerful country in tennis till mid 00 and that was more on the women's side.
They have no control to hide the positives like they had in athletism and the tennis players get rich and generally live outside the country so authorities have way less power over them than over other sportsmen
by Anonymous | reply 161 | February 17, 2021 6:36 PM |
R160 I'm not that sure of that.
With his current level both, Tsitsipas and Medvedev have chances to defeat him. His big advantage is that he will get more rest (and probably the second semifinal will be way tougher than the first one).
But if i have to bet i think Medvedev is the favourite
by Anonymous | reply 162 | February 17, 2021 6:45 PM |
r161-That's fair. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I believe Evidence suggests all the players have had some "miracle treatments". And, the blog post I posted has no Russian examples. Yes, I have a bias against Russians since childhood. Better dead than red is what we were told. In most cultures you would be shamed/ashamed for cheating but with Russians, it's like. R165 Karatsev was the king of challengers last year, i think he was the one with more titles (with Alcaraz) and he always hitted to ball very hard.
The problem is he has zero variety. When a big hitter is on the zone is difficult to stop him, the fact is Felix was winning very easily before Aslan lose his nerves and Felix started to choke. Dimitrov was winning easily till his injury became evident.
And this is nothing new. Verkerk reached RG final out of nowhere beating big players (way bigger than Karatsev) only to be trashed in the final by Juan Carlos Ferrero

Brady is a bit of a headcase but she has a shot at the title if Osaka isn't at her best. Obviously if Osaka plays well she's going to win as she just hits harder.
Brady has come a long way from when she got destroyed by Sharapova at the USO a few years ago
by Anonymous | reply 228 | February 18, 2021 5:57 AM |

What Serena gurl didn't say at that presser was more important than what she said: in her mind it was a farewell to the Australian Open (but she did say that she would not acknowledge it as it happens). Me, I hope the Williams sisters play forever because when they leave the court once and for all, I'm going to feel old.

How many dudes did Miss Chris bang in the bathroom? Did she ever have a dip in the lady pond when 98% of women players were lezzies and the remaining 2% included closet cases like Andrea Jaeger, Pam Shriver and Gabriela Sabatini? Why did Chris fall for the troll Connors?

Daniil team or Tsitsy team?

I'd prefer Medvedev to win but think Tsitsipas will take it.

COME ON DANIIL!
by Anonymous | reply 276 | February 19, 2021 7:49 AM |
If people think players like Nadal are clean and PED-free, they are naive fools.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | February 19, 2021 8:10 AM |
the level in this SF hasn't been great
Tsitsipas has been flat for most of it
Medvedev still giving too many FH errors that Djokovic will eat up
by Anonymous | reply 278 | February 19, 2021 9:33 AM |
I don't think I've ever heard an umpire ask the crowd to "be fair to both players". Asking them not to shout out during points/play, but never anything like that.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | February 19, 2021 9:42 AM |
the Aussie-Greeks finally have someone else to cheer for since Baghdatis retired. Tsitsipas is a much better player than he ever was
by Anonymous | reply 280 | February 19, 2021 9:48 AM |
I expect Djokovic to win in 3 or 4 sets but I hope there are some moments when Medvedev trolls and pisses him off. That would be entertaining
I also wonder who the fuck the crowd will cheer for as neither is a fan favorite
battle of the stick figures
by Anonymous | reply 281 | February 19, 2021 9:59 AM |
Medvedev is becoming a crowd favourite. He's very charming. The crowd will be cheering for him over Djokovic.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | February 19, 2021 10:04 AM |
Yea, skipping it. Zero desire to see demented scarecrow vs. smarmy kewpie.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | February 19, 2021 10:08 AM |
Titsy was still worn out by Rafa - you could tell his legs were heavy and he just plain didnāt have the game tonight.
On the bright side I do agree that Daniil should be able to give Novaxx a fight - more so than Titsy could right now I think. Medvedev is like a cartoon villain ala Boris and Natasha and Novaxx is just impossible to like so Iāll kind of hate watch the final I guess āsecretly rooting for Daniil ā anything to keep the Novaxx head from getting anymore swollen than it already is.

R282 is it a sarcasm?
by Anonymous | reply 286 | February 19, 2021 10:50 AM |
R286 Not at all. Any tennis fan will have seen how Medvedev handles himself off-court and his past naughty moments are well in the past. Combined with the fact Djokovic has hardly any fans left, everyone will be on Medvedev's side.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | February 19, 2021 10:53 AM |
R287 he was not crowd favourite here at all..have you seen the match?
by Anonymous | reply 288 | February 19, 2021 10:55 AM |
R288 Yes I watched the match. I didn't say he was the crowd favourite today. I said he's becoming a crowd favourite. The crowd today was very Greek-heavy as often happens in Melbourne, but they had a healthy respect for him - especially in his post-match interview.
He was booed by the US Open crowd and by the end of the tournament he had them cheering for him. People are slowly coming round to the idea that he's not actually a bad bloke and playing against Djokovic after all the shit he's pulled recently, the crowd will be on Medvedev's side.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | February 19, 2021 11:11 AM |
R291 He is full of shit. In a post match interview he kissed their asses, but minute later when he left the court in eurosport interview he was nagging about people , that they interrupted him when he was serving. He hates them

Neither of the men's finalists are ever going to win Mr. Congeniality, and it's painful to watch them try. Osaka vs. Brady looks like a much happier way to while away the weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | February 19, 2021 11:38 AM |
Serena fans will explode with fury if Osaka ends up losing to Brady in the final. I don't think Osaka will lose but it would be funny if, after all the US media hype over Serena and Gauff, Brady ended up being the unknown American who wins the damn thing.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | February 19, 2021 1:07 PM |
It was poignant listening to Chris Evert explain how difficult it is for Serena to play someone like Naomi, who's like a better version of herself because, at this point, Naomi serves a little better, hits a little harder, and moves a little faster. I couldn't help but think of how difficult it was for Chris Evert to play Tracy Austin, who at one point was like a carbon copy of Evert but just younger and a little bit better.

John McEnroe is doing too much this week by bringing up Patrick's 1 fluke run to the AO SF 30 years ago. He's mentioned it at least 3 times from what I've seen. I get that he's proud his brother went deep in a slam once but damn. Patrick seems in awe of John.

Don't be too sure, Medvedev has defeated every current top 10 player (except for a sidelined Federer) since last November
by Anonymous | reply 305 | February 19, 2021 7:28 PM |
I agree with R305. Medvedev could give Djokovic a lot of trouble if Novak isn't playing at his best.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | February 19, 2021 7:35 PM |
I want Ratface Medvedev and Mike Brady to win. The only good thing about Djokobitch winning would be him getting closer to PEDal and Gramps Fed's Slam total.
Tokyo or Hiroshima or whatever her name is has turned a bit overbearing and self-righteous with her virtue signaling nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 307 | February 19, 2021 7:58 PM |
R287 You obviously don't follow tennis that much. Djokovic doens't have Nadal or Federer's following (in Roger's case is more a cult than a following) but he has a lot of fans.
And people got over Medvedev's crappy behaviour because unlike others he really improved his behaviour on court.
I think it'll be an interesting final. If Medvedev is able to avoid giving Nole advantage from the very beginning he'll have a chance to win. Right now he is the player in better form
by Anonymous | reply 308 | February 19, 2021 9:21 PM |
Med was ridiculous against Titsy. He was everywhere on the court and retrieve everything. He's wall AND a shotmaker. It will be fun to see Djoko deal with that.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | February 19, 2021 10:12 PM |
I enjoy seeing Novaxx lose his shit sometimes. You know that his team must work overtime to calm him down after a loss....I am sure we are not going to see that in the documentary. Another reason for him to lose, the documentary he is shooting with the already announced in-depth loos at his abdominal injury. I am sure that the narrative for the documentary is and, in spite of all, he triumphed. Thus, a loss would make it more interesting. For the record, I think Novaxx is better than Fedal. He is a jerk and the boobs out thing is cringy but he does the impossible on the court.

Lovely to see the amazing Justine Henin on Eurosport. Most people when facetiming from home sit in front of carefully curated bookcases and Justine looked like she was sitting in a cupboard under the stairs. Doesn't give a fuck.

Naomi has tightened up a bit in the 1st set. Her second serves look like she's just spinning them in.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | February 20, 2021 8:25 AM |
Those last two points were terrible from Brady.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | February 20, 2021 8:28 AM |
That was a very scratchy first set, with Brady losing it more than Osaka winning it.

Naomi is lucky to pile up GS titles now before Coco hits her stride. Coco still is growing into her body, and is the only human with a realistic chance to pass Serena and Margaret. The pandemic is the only thing that really has set CoCo back.

R317 Coco needs to fix her serve problems as soon as possible or she'll be the next Karatancheva or Larcher de Brito instead of being the new Serena.
Saying that i have to say that i liked her attitude after losing against Svitolina, putting the focus on learn and improve (something youngsters in the male circuit like Sinner or Alcaraz do in every interview) instead of how great her career will be. The moment she makes her serve a weapon and not a weakness she will be a totally different player because she has the right attitude on court and she is eager to win.
And talking about Svitolina, she and Gael broke again

by Anonymous | reply 321 | February 20, 2021 10:05 AM |
Serena is not amused. I am still playing and you fairies are already talking about these copycat poseurs Naomi Campbell Okinawa and Coco Channel Gruff overtaking ME????
Don't piss off Serena, haters! I have a CHILD! I am a MOM! I'll get One Million Moms to teach you fairies a thing or two. Bow down to me and worship me. I am still the Queen, you fickle queens.
My ultimate revenge is going to be when I slam Naomi in front of her home fans to win the Japan Olympics Open this summer. She done messed with the Queen and the bitch is gonna pay. Venus, hold my earrings, sister.
