The Gays and Tennis: the Official Aussie Open Thread - Part II

Continue your bitching and moaning here.

by Anonymousreply 332February 20, 2021 6:55 PM

From Part 67:

Well the aussie open is paywalled so i suppose we'll comment here till someone opens another thread.

I hope that Zverev is able to eliminate Nole. The fact Berrettini retired when he supposely has the same injury than Novak doesn't make Djokovic look good.

If Dimitrov let Karatsev play comfortably he is toast. Grigor is not big enough to intimidate his rival so he better play at a very good level from the beginning.

Medvedev- Rublev match is interesting, the difference in the US Open was not that clear and Andrey had his chances. Daniil is the big favourite but if he plays like in the thir round he is toast.

And i expect Tsitsipas at leas to give a good fight. His backhand return is too weak and Nadal will use that in his favour. He need to play very well from the beginning to have any chance

by Anonymousreply 1February 15, 2021 6:38 PM

Was glad to see Grigor playing well. He seems also to have beefed up a bit, so many he's trying to become a serious contender. Would love to see him go far.

by Anonymousreply 2February 15, 2021 7:48 PM

thanks OP

by Anonymousreply 3February 15, 2021 7:54 PM

Dominic! Unreal!! šŸ¤©

by Anonymousreply 4February 15, 2021 7:58 PM

I don't think anyone believed Djokovic was seriously injured. You can't be adamant you have an abdominal tear without a scan.

by Anonymousreply 8February 15, 2021 9:47 PM

Can she still be considered a tennis pro?

by Anonymousreply 9February 15, 2021 10:00 PM

Are you Team Serena or Team Halep? Iā€™ll be watching at midnight tonight from the west coast. Iā€™m pulling for Serena - I like Halep too but the grunting is becoming unbearable.

by Anonymousreply 10February 15, 2021 11:48 PM

I prefer Serena also.

by Anonymousreply 11February 15, 2021 11:51 PM

I want Hsieh to win it all.

by Anonymousreply 12February 16, 2021 12:58 AM

What time is my boyfriend Grigor?

by Anonymousreply 13February 16, 2021 1:17 AM

Not until 11p at least. EST.

by Anonymousreply 14February 16, 2021 1:22 AM

Osaka barely needed an hour to destroy poor Hsieh.

by Anonymousreply 15February 16, 2021 1:43 AM

I like skinny boys in tank tops. That being said, is it really appropriate for Zverev to wear a 'wifebeater'?

by Anonymousreply 16February 16, 2021 1:47 AM

Holy cow. Is that really Jelena Dokic?

by Anonymousreply 17February 16, 2021 1:55 AM

Yes, R16, I don't understand why people would actually cheer for him. There are assholes and divas on tour, but he's the player with the most serious allegations against him.

by Anonymousreply 18February 16, 2021 1:56 AM

R18 meets please.

R17 yes she is having weight issues again

by Anonymousreply 23February 16, 2021 2:10 AM

I'm glad at least 1 of the women's finalists will be a previous slam winner. Barty will have to do it on the other half for there to be 2.

by Anonymousreply 27February 16, 2021 2:43 AM

This tournament and the time difference always wipes me out. I'm not going to be able to stay up for this match.

by Anonymousreply 28February 16, 2021 2:59 AM

Young Grigor is so damn cute

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2021 3:06 AM

Grigor is good looking but he's aging like shit. He's balding, all wrinkled now and too thin. He should add another 10 lbs of muscle.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2021 3:12 AM

R19 see link. There's a better article, with corroboration from one of Zverev's (ex-I'd think) friends and their mother. The idiot mother actually re-united the girlfriend with Zverev thinking it was just 'couples trouble' and then finding out differently.

R30 bitch you'd service him and be on your back in a minute if he pulled his big dick out.

by Anonymousreply 34February 16, 2021 3:16 AM

Grigor still has one of the best bods, faces and most charming personalities on the ATP. It's just that in his youth he was stunningly beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 35February 16, 2021 3:17 AM

Which white make players have yellow skin?

by Anonymousreply 36February 16, 2021 3:19 AM

R35 he does have a super sweet demeanor. He's adorable and extremely well mannered.

by Anonymousreply 37February 16, 2021 3:20 AM

I never understood how he could date that nasty stone cold bitch Sharapova. The guy is a total sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 38February 16, 2021 3:32 AM

Dimitrov is a partyboy, famewhore and whore in general. He loves attention. After Sharapova he got with Nicole Scherzinger. Now he's dating the daughter of a Russian oligarch.

He does seem nice though.

by Anonymousreply 39February 16, 2021 3:36 AM

is John McEnroe a DLer? lol he just mentioned Raonic's big calves. Karatsev has them too

by Anonymousreply 40February 16, 2021 3:37 AM

More on Grigor's slutty days please.

by Anonymousreply 41February 16, 2021 3:39 AM

McEnroe again: "He's got big legs."

by Anonymousreply 42February 16, 2021 3:42 AM

I see the girl with the provocative tiger print mask again.

by Anonymousreply 43February 16, 2021 3:43 AM

Aslan's calves are crazy big. He's a lot better looking than pig boy in general.

by Anonymousreply 44February 16, 2021 3:52 AM

Grigor also dated Serena for awhile early on ā€” apparently it didnā€™t end well. She later referred to him ā€œ as the guy with the black heartā€ IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 45February 16, 2021 4:19 AM

Following on Medvedev's comments, I think except Tsitsy and Rafa, all the remaining men are Slavs.

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2021 4:22 AM

R46 Tsitsipas is half Russian

by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2021 4:30 AM

Thanks, R47. I forgot about that. So 93.75 of the men's finalists are Slav.

by Anonymousreply 48February 16, 2021 4:34 AM

BTW Iā€™d like to thank OP for posting the bootilicious video of DL icon Domicakes. That ass deserves itā€™s own thread - has it had one yet?

by Anonymousreply 50February 16, 2021 4:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 51February 16, 2021 4:53 AM

Karatsev for the title?

by Anonymousreply 52February 16, 2021 5:02 AM

wow Dimitrov now injured!

by Anonymousreply 53February 16, 2021 5:05 AM

Dimitrov has to retire this match.

by Anonymousreply 54February 16, 2021 5:10 AM

oh FAA, this could have been you about to be in a slam SF...

by Anonymousreply 55February 16, 2021 5:11 AM

Yikes. What will happen with Young Grigor, I wonder. If itā€™s a back injury itā€™s gonna be trouble. Off-court medical timeout...

by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2021 5:15 AM

Good for Aslan.

by Anonymousreply 57February 16, 2021 5:48 AM

Yep - good for Aslan. Feel bad for YG šŸ„²

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2021 5:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2021 6:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2021 6:17 AM

I hope Karatsev makes the final

by Anonymousreply 61February 16, 2021 6:29 AM

Serena def. Help 6-3 6-3

it was a great performance by Serena. I was surprised she was able to win several of the key long rallies. Help to her credit was able to absorb many of Serena's powerful blows but then Serena either hit a winner or forced Help to make an error.

by Anonymousreply 62February 16, 2021 8:39 AM

Yep ā€” Serena was in excellent form against a pretty in form herself Help. Osaka I think will be a pretty big challenge but I think Serena won the last time they played - pretty sure Patrick McEnroe just said that. Should be a good one. Already looking forward to it.

by Anonymousreply 63February 16, 2021 9:25 AM

God Djokovic is so repulsive. Iā€™m sure heā€™ll find a way to win this match.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 64February 16, 2021 10:12 AM

Zverev won the first set by the smallest of margins in the tiebreak. Now novaxx is up 3-0. We shall see. The problem with Zverevā€™s t-shirt is that it makes him look as if he is doing construction work instead of playing tennis. It also looks dirty. He needs an image consultant! (Among many other things)

by Anonymousreply 65February 16, 2021 10:22 AM

The take out from R32 linked article is that Alexander Zverev has diabetes type I. I had no idea. It's also seemingly common knowledge and discussed on reddit. It could explain some of his inability to really compete in BO5.

by Anonymousreply 66February 16, 2021 10:40 AM

damn I was hoping Djokovic-Zverev would have gone 5 sets.

Really hoping Karatsev reaches the final somehow haha

by Anonymousreply 78February 16, 2021 5:35 PM

R77 wow. Wasn't it his right oblique that was badly strained and initially thought to be torn? Obviously it's not torn but if his abs were hurting him, you'd think he wouldn't have had the ability to smash his racket off the ground. Surely striking the ground with all your strength would make an ab injury worse.

Go Karatsev

by Anonymousreply 79February 16, 2021 5:37 PM

I was listening to a podcast that had coach Calvin Betton on it and he didn't mince his words re Djokovic's "injury". There's basically no way in hell anyone with that kind of injury could play like he has been and it's so obvious that was why he got so defensive when questioned about it.

by Anonymousreply 80February 16, 2021 5:44 PM

I want Nadal to rack up or slam or 2 more just to increase the possibility that NoVaxx never exceeds his total. It will drive him WILD.

by Anonymousreply 81February 16, 2021 5:45 PM

Is Karatsev journeyman?

by Anonymousreply 82February 16, 2021 5:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 84February 16, 2021 6:33 PM

[quote]Has anyone had an easier draw than Barty?

Maybe Jennifer Brady, but nobody talks about her lol...she reached the SF at the US Open

by Anonymousreply 85February 16, 2021 6:43 PM

Karatsev doesn't have any chance against Nole. For sure he is able to hit winners but he only is in semis because Felix choked and Grigor was injured.

Generally this type of surprise run ends in a big lose.

And i like the storyline of the underdog but just like Sandgren i can't be excited for him. He has a story of fixing matches, and frankly he is not a young and exciting new player. He is strong and aggressive player and he belongs to top 50 but i doubt he'll have another run at a GS like this.

I'm not on the mood for another Nole-Rafa but frankly only Medvedev can stop that

by Anonymousreply 86February 16, 2021 6:46 PM

The Brady vs. Pegula match will be interesting. Firstly they're good friends. When it comes to style of play, Brady is a huge power hitter. Her first serve is decent and her forehand is huge. Her backhand is very hit or miss though. Pegula is not very tall or fast but she takes the ball very early with hard, compact strokes and redirects it away from her opponents. Pegula is kind of like a Bartoli-type player except with a 1 handed forehand.

by Anonymousreply 87February 16, 2021 6:57 PM

I really liked Brady at the US Open last year.

Anyway, anything that won't be Barty on the final in that part of the draw will be a huge surprise

by Anonymousreply 88February 16, 2021 7:11 PM

Who's the top between Jenn and Jess?

by Anonymousreply 89February 16, 2021 7:44 PM

Osaka vs. Serena is a tough one because I like them both. Same with Medvedev and Rublev and Nadal and Tsitsipas. I think Serena, Medvedev and Nadal might advance.

by Anonymousreply 90February 16, 2021 8:29 PM

We'll see whether Tsitsipas' backhand can hold up against Nadal's relentless pounding or if he's able to get more forehands. Also key is how well or poorly Nadal serves and if Tsitsipas puts pressure on second serves

by Anonymousreply 91February 16, 2021 8:33 PM

Rublev, Titsy, Barty, Brady

Team

by Anonymousreply 92February 16, 2021 9:15 PM

Why do posters on DL tennis threads put ā€œteamā€ after player names?

by Anonymousreply 93February 16, 2021 9:19 PM

It's just to say who you're rooting for. First time I saw it here it was a "Twilight" reference.

by Anonymousreply 94February 16, 2021 9:31 PM

And it's fun to say Thiem team.

by Anonymousreply 95February 16, 2021 10:44 PM

[quote] And it's fun to say Thiem team.

by Anonymousreply 96February 16, 2021 10:48 PM

Muchova ahead 3-2 in the third set against Barty.

by Anonymousreply 97February 17, 2021 12:53 AM

And Muchova takes out Barty in three

by Anonymousreply 98February 17, 2021 1:14 AM

Canā€™t BELIEVE Muchova took out Barty! Wow ā€” Iā€™m stunned.

by Anonymousreply 99February 17, 2021 1:30 AM

Whereā€™s tennis? All I see is skiing.

by Anonymousreply 100February 17, 2021 3:11 AM

Daniil's white shorts are very transparent with the sun shining through them. He has such skinny legs! I think he's cute.

by Anonymousreply 101February 17, 2021 4:12 AM

Agree Danill is cute and Iā€™m also enjoying the see-through shorts. I think he might be a bit of a dick, though...?

by Anonymousreply 102February 17, 2021 4:22 AM

Oops. Daniil, not Danill. šŸ¤“

by Anonymousreply 103February 17, 2021 4:23 AM

Barty had a pathetic collapse today against Muchova. She seemed to lose her momentum after Muchova took an injury timeout after going down an early break.

Brady was a bit of a mess but overcame bff Pegula in 3

by Anonymousreply 104February 17, 2021 5:10 AM

Rublev seems mentally and physically exhausted. Even on these faster courts (compared to last year), Medvedev has just gotten so many balls back he frustrated him into hitting errors

by Anonymousreply 105February 17, 2021 5:11 AM

This Medvedev/Rublev match is pretty entertaining so far.

by Anonymousreply 106February 17, 2021 5:16 AM

Aww I feel kind of bad for Barty. She seems like a truly nice girl and I think the pressure of being seeded #1 and being ā€œsupposedā€ to win the home-country slam must be really really difficult to manage She must be so disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 107February 17, 2021 5:22 AM

R106 Agree. I like Medvedev. I know he's been a bit of a shit in the past but thought he handled himself (and the crowd) well at the US Open.

by Anonymousreply 108February 17, 2021 5:23 AM

A bit? I'd place him in the top 5 in the gallery of assholery among the current top 100. There certainly won't be any love lost in the semis between Medvedev and Tsitsipas if Stefanos somehow gets past Nadal.

by Anonymousreply 109February 17, 2021 5:34 AM

yeah Medvedev is an asshole. He seems to be the most mentally tough of the next generation though.

by Anonymousreply 110February 17, 2021 5:38 AM

Aww come on! How can you call Medvedev an arsehole after that lovely on-court interview? He's delightful.

by Anonymousreply 111February 17, 2021 5:45 AM

Yes, he can be charming but also goes quickly from Jekyll to Hyde.

by Anonymousreply 112February 17, 2021 5:54 AM

The TsitsipASS is looking mighty fine this evening.

by Anonymousreply 113February 17, 2021 8:15 AM

men's tennis continues to be pathetic and boring. Nadal and Djokovic are now both into their mid-30s and both claimed to have been injured in this tournament. Unless the most shocking double SF upset in history happens, we're going to get yet another fucking dull final between those 2. When will it end? When the fuck will the younger, hyped up guys step up and beat them? It's not a problem having Nadal and Djokovic in the mix at every slam since they're 2 of the 3 best ever, but the fact that they're STILL dominating? that's pathetic for the tour. It makes no sense that guys in their 20s who should be in their physical peaks cannot outlast them and/or overpower them at this point.

by Anonymousreply 114February 17, 2021 9:02 AM

Iā€™m not sure what rock Iā€™ve been living under, but I had no idea that Pegulaā€™s dad was a billionaire fracking magnate.

by Anonymousreply 115February 17, 2021 10:41 AM

R115 To be fair, her dad was probably the only person who knew who she was until this tournament.

by Anonymousreply 116February 17, 2021 10:58 AM

It just occurred to me that Joe Kovich will top Rogerer in two weeks for number of weeks spent at number 1. Poor Federer, watching all his mythical records vanish before his eyes despite still being an active player (officially, I wouldn't be surprised if he pulls a Sampras and announces he will never compete again).

by Anonymousreply 117February 17, 2021 11:04 AM

DAMN that ass on Titsy is a shelf!

by Anonymousreply 118February 17, 2021 11:12 AM

And Titsy takes Rafa to a 5th!

by Anonymousreply 119February 17, 2021 11:23 AM

Titsy breaks Nadal to love and serving for the match *gulp*

by Anonymousreply 120February 17, 2021 11:44 AM

Titsy and his fabulous ASS, bitches!

by Anonymousreply 121February 17, 2021 11:54 AM

Nadal really needs a hair cut.

by Anonymousreply 122February 17, 2021 12:01 PM

Titsy takes out Rafa in 5! Wow ā€” that was some fabulous tennis. After being down 2 sets he comes back and wins 3 and 4 and the 5th set was a nail biter. So happy for TsitsipASS. Great win and Rafa will have to wait for 21 which is an extra bonus for this Fed fan.

by Anonymousreply 123February 17, 2021 12:34 PM

I condole Rafa and volunteer to rim his sweaty ass to help him get over this tough loss.

by Anonymousreply 124February 17, 2021 12:37 PM

Couldn't watch the match, unfortunately, but for those who did, was it more a case of Nadal wilting in the 5th or Tsitsipas upping his (mental) game?

TIA.

by Anonymousreply 125February 17, 2021 12:42 PM

R125 I'd argue Tsitsipas upped his game, but it was a great match from both. We all know Nadal in full flight is unplayable, but Tsitsipas in full flight (on a hard court) is up there with him.

by Anonymousreply 126February 17, 2021 12:47 PM

R125 Combination of both really. Rafa got a bit tired and tight ā€”. started making un-Rafa like errors and Titsy relaxed and upped his physical and mental game. The first 2 sets Rafa was large and in charge and it seemed like we were headed for a blowout. Titsy started playing better in 3rd - won the tiebreaker and the tide was turned. Rafa looked kind of mortal by the end.

Ok itā€™s almost 6am here in San Francisco. Iā€™m gonna sleep and get ready for Serena.

by Anonymousreply 127February 17, 2021 12:50 PM

R127 2pm here in London so I'd better get on with some work. Goodnight maximdw!

by Anonymousreply 128February 17, 2021 1:12 PM

R125, after Tsitsipas won the tiebreak in the third, Rafa seemed to suddenly age. Tsitsipas looked young and confident and was bouncing around. Rafa looked fatigued; he repeatedly let balls go that he once would have hunted down. His concentration was off, too; he made quite a few unforced errors, including missing some easy overhead smashes. Maybe it was the effect of rust, or not having challenging opposition earlier.

by Anonymousreply 129February 17, 2021 1:25 PM

Now can Tsitsipas or Medvedev beat Djokovic?

by Anonymousreply 130February 17, 2021 2:30 PM

So glad Tsitsipas won. I watched the highlights. Definitely Tsitsipas looked fresher after he won the tiebreak. It's unusual, but it seemed he wore Nadal down, not the other way around. I don't think Nadal likes to get in these five setters anymore. He seems to get nervous. Medvedev really should have won their 5 setter at the US Open in 2019. The reviews of the draw I read called it right. They all said Nadal had a pretty easy path to the quarters (some said to the Rd of 16), but then it would get tough if the draw held. Most said they thought it would be tough for Nadal to get through both Tsitsipas and Medvedev if the draw held. Guess they were right!

R130, yes, they can. Medvedev has won three of his last four matches against Djokovic. Tsitsipas has beaten Djokovic twice on hard courts and took him to five sets in the semis of the 2020 French Open. They both have a shot.

by Anonymousreply 131February 17, 2021 2:33 PM

Here's to Tsitsi for the Big W and to the end of R114's whine.

by Anonymousreply 132February 17, 2021 2:36 PM

I'd like to see Nadal win one more French. If (at least) between them Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem plus one or two others can be counted on to take at least a couple of Grand Slams each year over the next couple of seasons this just might mean Novaxxx never gets to rack up 22 slams before his body finally implodes. I will literally DIE if he ever becomes the statistical GOAT!

by Anonymousreply 133February 17, 2021 2:46 PM

I can't stand Djokovic as a person but have to admit his tennis is stellar and he deserves his place in the Big 3. No-one can return like him and he's an incredible athlete. If he gets the numbers I'd have to grudgingly respect him as the GOAT considering the competition he was up against.

by Anonymousreply 134February 17, 2021 2:53 PM

I automatically assume all Russian players are doping. As all the others drop from injuries, the only 2 who seem fine are Medvedev and a qualifier who has some of the fastest hitting speeds on the tour?

Systematic doping in Russian sports has resulted in 47 Olympic and tens of world championships medals being stripped from Russian competitorsā€”the most of any country, more than four times the number of the runner-up, and more than 30% of the global total. Russia also has the most competitors that have been caught doping at the Olympic Games, with more than 200.[1]

r133- And I'll come to your funeral in a red dress!

R153 Medvedev who lives in France and has a French team around him? Do your xenophobic assumptions include them or is it just Russian people?

by Anonymousreply 136February 17, 2021 2:58 PM

Tennis players have a lot of controls over the year. This is not a federation Russia have any power, and most of them live and train in other countries (Medvedev in France, Rublev in Spain).

by Anonymousreply 137February 17, 2021 3:00 PM

The Zverev match was amazing. He was down 0-3 twice. It seemed like he played from behind in almost every game facing 12 break points and saved 9 of them. I see Zverev as the next Berdych.

amazing job from Tsitsipas to fight back! This has to be Nadal's only loss up 2 sets, right?

Thank goodness for Stefanos and his strut around the court. I'm glad he got the walkover from Berrettini now so he was rested. I hope he can recover for the SF. I'd love to see him win but it seems too tough to take out Nadal, Medvedev and Djokovic

at least no more Djokovic-Nadal finals this time

by Anonymousreply 150February 17, 2021 4:28 PM

R148 no surprise for that piece of shit

Zverev along with Djokovic was bitching after their match about the tough AO restrictions and blaming them on all the injuries. The AO has done it's damnedest to put on a tournament and help the players. It's like they were expecting everything to be 100% perfect.

by Anonymousreply 151February 17, 2021 4:34 PM

[quote]This has to be Nadal's only loss up 2 sets, right?

I read on Twitter it happened before in the Miami final in 2005 against Federer and in the 3rd round of the US Open in 2015 against Fognini. So only the third time

by Anonymousreply 152February 17, 2021 4:35 PM

(the Miami tournament still had a best-of-five set final back then)

by Anonymousreply 153February 17, 2021 4:39 PM

That Miami match was Rafa's coming out party. He was thought of as a clay only. This was during Federer's nearly unbeatable stage and the Latino crowd was amazing. One of the ONLY matches that Fed wasn't the favorite. It's amazing with all his trophies that Miami is the one that got away. -

by Anonymousreply 154February 17, 2021 4:39 PM

Nadal's never won Miami or the ATP Finals.

by Anonymousreply 155February 17, 2021 4:46 PM

R137 lol so Serena is clean?

by Anonymousreply 156February 17, 2021 5:02 PM

The match between Osaka and Serena tonight is basically the final, right? Is there any doubt that either one of them would roll right over Muchova or Brady?

by Anonymousreply 157February 17, 2021 5:17 PM

R157, Muchova will be much over.

by Anonymousreply 158February 17, 2021 5:19 PM

I am so happy the OCD freak lost. Hopefully the no.3 Russian will win the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 159February 17, 2021 6:17 PM

Djokovic is winning the entire thing now. How boring!

by Anonymousreply 160February 17, 2021 6:32 PM

R139 There are sports where the government has a lot of power llike athletism or swimming. They have zero power over tennis. Russia never was a powerful country in tennis till mid 00 and that was more on the women's side.

They have no control to hide the positives like they had in athletism and the tennis players get rich and generally live outside the country so authorities have way less power over them than over other sportsmen

by Anonymousreply 161February 17, 2021 6:36 PM

R160 I'm not that sure of that.

With his current level both, Tsitsipas and Medvedev have chances to defeat him. His big advantage is that he will get more rest (and probably the second semifinal will be way tougher than the first one).

But if i have to bet i think Medvedev is the favourite

by Anonymousreply 162February 17, 2021 6:45 PM

r161-That's fair. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I believe Evidence suggests all the players have had some "miracle treatments". And, the blog post I posted has no Russian examples. Yes, I have a bias against Russians since childhood. Better dead than red is what we were told. In most cultures you would be shamed/ashamed for cheating but with Russians, it's like. R165 Karatsev was the king of challengers last year, i think he was the one with more titles (with Alcaraz) and he always hitted to ball very hard.

The problem is he has zero variety. When a big hitter is on the zone is difficult to stop him, the fact is Felix was winning very easily before Aslan lose his nerves and Felix started to choke. Dimitrov was winning easily till his injury became evident.

And this is nothing new. Verkerk reached RG final out of nowhere beating big players (way bigger than Karatsev) only to be trashed in the final by Juan Carlos Ferrero

by Anonymousreply 168February 17, 2021 8:17 PM

Yea, well, doping is nothing new either.

by Anonymousreply 169February 17, 2021 8:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 179February 17, 2021 10:48 PM

it's really interesting. In the early 2000s, Argentina had a bunch of great players-Gaudio, Nalbandian, Coria and flash in the pan Puerta. Then a few years later Del Potro came on the tour. No one since him. Pella is a middling player

by Anonymousreply 180February 17, 2021 10:50 PM

But Pella is hot at least. Poor Nalbi wasn't hot and had more talent and never won a major, though he did get to the Wimby final IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 213February 18, 2021 3:36 AM

Halep created a blueprint for beating Serena on grass. I think the US Open is Serena's best chance, and she's going to need a few people to be injured.

by Anonymousreply 218February 18, 2021 3:42 AM

Osaka needs to win the title now.

by Anonymousreply 219February 18, 2021 3:43 AM

I'll be happy when Serena retires. She dominates the conversation -- the announcers talk of nothing but the GS record. This is not her fault. However, I'm tired of hearing about it.

by Anonymousreply 220February 18, 2021 3:44 AM

R217, I suspect Hingis and JenCap slogged through a few weekends that outdid Dawson.

by Anonymousreply 222February 18, 2021 4:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 224February 18, 2021 4:26 AM

Hewett is in the final.

by Anonymousreply 225February 18, 2021 5:08 AM

I donā€™t know really but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Serena retires ā€” her acknowledgment of the crowd as she left the court seemed to signal a farewell ā€” at least to Rod Laver Arena. Itā€™s funny ā€”I didnā€™t like her that much when she was younger ā€” I remember being happy when Shriekapova beat her at Wimbledon ā€” but now that sheā€™s the underdog and chasing history I have to say I really admire her. There must be easier ways to spend her fortune and time...but sheā€™s still out there trying to win one more.

by Anonymousreply 226February 18, 2021 5:31 AM

I really hate Brady's tennis dress.

by Anonymousreply 227February 18, 2021 5:34 AM

Brady is a bit of a headcase but she has a shot at the title if Osaka isn't at her best. Obviously if Osaka plays well she's going to win as she just hits harder.

Brady has come a long way from when she got destroyed by Sharapova at the USO a few years ago

by Anonymousreply 228February 18, 2021 5:57 AM

She started to get emotional when she was asked if her wave to the crowd was a farewell, then she couldn't answer the next question.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 229February 18, 2021 6:11 AM

What Serena gurl didn't say at that presser was more important than what she said: in her mind it was a farewell to the Australian Open (but she did say that she would not acknowledge it as it happens). Me, I hope the Williams sisters play forever because when they leave the court once and for all, I'm going to feel old.

by Anonymousreply 230February 18, 2021 7:05 AM

I feel bad for Serena, but as DL fave Christine Marie used to say (when she wasn't banging dudes in the bathroom), it gets increasingly hard to get up for seven matches in a row when you get older. Some days you're just flat. Naomi is younger and hungrier and fearless. Like Gramps, I think everything would have to go right for Serena to win another one and the prospect gets more dim with every passing major.

by Anonymousreply 247February 18, 2021 10:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 249February 18, 2021 10:55 AM

I'm amazed that Serena can still reach the semis and finals in slams these days: it's not only that she is in her late thirties but she's been looking more or less like a hippo since she had an alleged baby.

by Anonymousreply 250February 18, 2021 10:56 AM

I've always been amazed she can haul those jugs and that ass around court like she does.

by Anonymousreply 251February 18, 2021 10:59 AM

R250, that's because the level of top competition on the women's side has been shit since 2008. Venus fell ill and started to play like crap, Clijsters retired, came back and retired again, Henin retired and Capriati was done. The only consistent competition Serena has had was the drug cheat and Serena's bitch Shrieky. Osaka is the first player to maintain some consistent high level in over a decade but the American media won't admit that Serena has benefitted from shit competition for the last 12 years.

Oh, and it's hard to come by evidence, r258, when Spanish judges have blood samples destroyed.

by Anonymousreply 273February 19, 2021 5:49 AM

Here we go boys! šŸ˜Ž

by Anonymousreply 274February 19, 2021 7:33 AM

I want whoeverā€™s got the best chance of downing Djokovic to win.

by Anonymousreply 275February 19, 2021 7:47 AM

COME ON DANIIL!

by Anonymousreply 276February 19, 2021 7:49 AM

If people think players like Nadal are clean and PED-free, they are naive fools.

by Anonymousreply 277February 19, 2021 8:10 AM

the level in this SF hasn't been great

Tsitsipas has been flat for most of it

Medvedev still giving too many FH errors that Djokovic will eat up

by Anonymousreply 278February 19, 2021 9:33 AM

I don't think I've ever heard an umpire ask the crowd to "be fair to both players". Asking them not to shout out during points/play, but never anything like that.

by Anonymousreply 279February 19, 2021 9:42 AM

the Aussie-Greeks finally have someone else to cheer for since Baghdatis retired. Tsitsipas is a much better player than he ever was

by Anonymousreply 280February 19, 2021 9:48 AM

I expect Djokovic to win in 3 or 4 sets but I hope there are some moments when Medvedev trolls and pisses him off. That would be entertaining

I also wonder who the fuck the crowd will cheer for as neither is a fan favorite

battle of the stick figures

by Anonymousreply 281February 19, 2021 9:59 AM

Medvedev is becoming a crowd favourite. He's very charming. The crowd will be cheering for him over Djokovic.

by Anonymousreply 282February 19, 2021 10:04 AM

Yea, skipping it. Zero desire to see demented scarecrow vs. smarmy kewpie.

by Anonymousreply 283February 19, 2021 10:08 AM

Titsy was still worn out by Rafa - you could tell his legs were heavy and he just plain didnā€™t have the game tonight.

On the bright side I do agree that Daniil should be able to give Novaxx a fight - more so than Titsy could right now I think. Medvedev is like a cartoon villain ala Boris and Natasha and Novaxx is just impossible to like so Iā€™ll kind of hate watch the final I guess ā€”secretly rooting for Daniil ā€” anything to keep the Novaxx head from getting anymore swollen than it already is.

by Anonymousreply 284February 19, 2021 10:25 AM

Perhaps we'll get lucky and have a Scanners moment.

by Anonymousreply 285February 19, 2021 10:37 AM

R282 is it a sarcasm?

by Anonymousreply 286February 19, 2021 10:50 AM

R286 Not at all. Any tennis fan will have seen how Medvedev handles himself off-court and his past naughty moments are well in the past. Combined with the fact Djokovic has hardly any fans left, everyone will be on Medvedev's side.

by Anonymousreply 287February 19, 2021 10:53 AM

R287 he was not crowd favourite here at all..have you seen the match?

by Anonymousreply 288February 19, 2021 10:55 AM

Daniil playing with himself.

by Anonymousreply 289February 19, 2021 11:03 AM

Daniil adjusting.

by Anonymousreply 290February 19, 2021 11:03 AM

R288 Yes I watched the match. I didn't say he was the crowd favourite today. I said he's becoming a crowd favourite. The crowd today was very Greek-heavy as often happens in Melbourne, but they had a healthy respect for him - especially in his post-match interview.

He was booed by the US Open crowd and by the end of the tournament he had them cheering for him. People are slowly coming round to the idea that he's not actually a bad bloke and playing against Djokovic after all the shit he's pulled recently, the crowd will be on Medvedev's side.

by Anonymousreply 291February 19, 2021 11:11 AM

R291 He is full of shit. In a post match interview he kissed their asses, but minute later when he left the court in eurosport interview he was nagging about people , that they interrupted him when he was serving. He hates them

by Anonymousreply 292February 19, 2021 11:16 AM

Neither of the men's finalists are ever going to win Mr. Congeniality, and it's painful to watch them try. Osaka vs. Brady looks like a much happier way to while away the weekend.

by Anonymousreply 293February 19, 2021 11:38 AM

Serena fans will explode with fury if Osaka ends up losing to Brady in the final. I don't think Osaka will lose but it would be funny if, after all the US media hype over Serena and Gauff, Brady ended up being the unknown American who wins the damn thing.

by Anonymousreply 294February 19, 2021 1:07 PM

It was poignant listening to Chris Evert explain how difficult it is for Serena to play someone like Naomi, who's like a better version of herself because, at this point, Naomi serves a little better, hits a little harder, and moves a little faster. I couldn't help but think of how difficult it was for Chris Evert to play Tracy Austin, who at one point was like a carbon copy of Evert but just younger and a little bit better.

by Anonymousreply 295February 19, 2021 2:10 PM

I love Daniil! Daniil for the win please!

by Anonymousreply 296February 19, 2021 4:48 PM

Anybody but Djokovic, Mr. Pompous himself

by Anonymousreply 297February 19, 2021 4:50 PM

Rafa's new outfit for the Spring....Gurl!

Who is going to win the Kyoto vs Jan Brady match in the final tomorrow?

by Anonymousreply 299February 19, 2021 5:28 PM

Wow, looking forward to seeing Rafa in his new togs.

by Anonymousreply 300February 19, 2021 5:28 PM

Naomi for the win. And, hopefully, Medvedev. he makes for very funny GIFs

by Anonymousreply 301February 19, 2021 5:33 PM

John McEnroe is doing too much this week by bringing up Patrick's 1 fluke run to the AO SF 30 years ago. He's mentioned it at least 3 times from what I've seen. I get that he's proud his brother went deep in a slam once but damn. Patrick seems in awe of John.

by Anonymousreply 302February 19, 2021 5:40 PM

Patrick McEnroe has such a punchable face.

by Anonymousreply 303February 19, 2021 5:49 PM

Congrats Djokovic on your 9th Australian Open title!

by Anonymousreply 304February 19, 2021 6:25 PM

[quote]Congrats Djokovic on your 9th Australian Open title!

Don't be too sure, Medvedev has defeated every current top 10 player (except for a sidelined Federer) since last November

by Anonymousreply 305February 19, 2021 7:28 PM

I agree with R305. Medvedev could give Djokovic a lot of trouble if Novak isn't playing at his best.

by Anonymousreply 306February 19, 2021 7:35 PM

I want Ratface Medvedev and Mike Brady to win. The only good thing about Djokobitch winning would be him getting closer to PEDal and Gramps Fed's Slam total.

Tokyo or Hiroshima or whatever her name is has turned a bit overbearing and self-righteous with her virtue signaling nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 307February 19, 2021 7:58 PM

R287 You obviously don't follow tennis that much. Djokovic doens't have Nadal or Federer's following (in Roger's case is more a cult than a following) but he has a lot of fans.

And people got over Medvedev's crappy behaviour because unlike others he really improved his behaviour on court.

I think it'll be an interesting final. If Medvedev is able to avoid giving Nole advantage from the very beginning he'll have a chance to win. Right now he is the player in better form

by Anonymousreply 308February 19, 2021 9:21 PM

Med was ridiculous against Titsy. He was everywhere on the court and retrieve everything. He's wall AND a shotmaker. It will be fun to see Djoko deal with that.

by Anonymousreply 309February 19, 2021 10:12 PM

I enjoy seeing Novaxx lose his shit sometimes. You know that his team must work overtime to calm him down after a loss....I am sure we are not going to see that in the documentary. Another reason for him to lose, the documentary he is shooting with the already announced in-depth loos at his abdominal injury. I am sure that the narrative for the documentary is and, in spite of all, he triumphed. Thus, a loss would make it more interesting. For the record, I think Novaxx is better than Fedal. He is a jerk and the boobs out thing is cringy but he does the impossible on the court.

by Anonymousreply 310February 19, 2021 11:50 PM

Lovely to see the amazing Justine Henin on Eurosport. Most people when facetiming from home sit in front of carefully curated bookcases and Justine looked like she was sitting in a cupboard under the stairs. Doesn't give a fuck.

by Anonymousreply 311February 20, 2021 7:19 AM

Brady looks like a man with a man bun in an ugly polyester pal blue dress. Get those eyebrows threaded, girlfriend!

by Anonymousreply 312February 20, 2021 8:23 AM

Brady looks like a female Raonic.

by Anonymousreply 313February 20, 2021 8:25 AM

Naomi has tightened up a bit in the 1st set. Her second serves look like she's just spinning them in.

by Anonymousreply 314February 20, 2021 8:25 AM

Those last two points were terrible from Brady.

by Anonymousreply 315February 20, 2021 8:28 AM

That was a very scratchy first set, with Brady losing it more than Osaka winning it.

by Anonymousreply 316February 20, 2021 8:29 AM

Naomi is lucky to pile up GS titles now before Coco hits her stride. Coco still is growing into her body, and is the only human with a realistic chance to pass Serena and Margaret. The pandemic is the only thing that really has set CoCo back.

by Anonymousreply 317February 20, 2021 9:44 AM

R317 = ESPN shill who keeps hyping up Gauff and claiming she will break Court's record

by Anonymousreply 318February 20, 2021 9:59 AM

"Do you prefer Jenny or Jennifer?"

"Jenny"

"Congratulations Jennifer"

by Anonymousreply 319February 20, 2021 10:01 AM

R317 Coco needs to fix her serve problems as soon as possible or she'll be the next Karatancheva or Larcher de Brito instead of being the new Serena.

Saying that i have to say that i liked her attitude after losing against Svitolina, putting the focus on learn and improve (something youngsters in the male circuit like Sinner or Alcaraz do in every interview) instead of how great her career will be. The moment she makes her serve a weapon and not a weakness she will be a totally different player because she has the right attitude on court and she is eager to win.

And talking about Svitolina, she and Gael broke again

by Anonymousreply 320February 20, 2021 10:04 AM

And Muriel is pathetic, the regular tennis thread is paywalled again

by Anonymousreply 321February 20, 2021 10:05 AM

Serena is not amused. I am still playing and you fairies are already talking about these copycat poseurs Naomi Campbell Okinawa and Coco Channel Gruff overtaking ME????

Don't piss off Serena, haters! I have a CHILD! I am a MOM! I'll get One Million Moms to teach you fairies a thing or two. Bow down to me and worship me. I am still the Queen, you fickle queens.

My ultimate revenge is going to be when I slam Naomi in front of her home fans to win the Japan Olympics Open this summer. She done messed with the Queen and the bitch is gonna pay. Venus, hold my earrings, sister.

by Anonymousreply 322February 20, 2021 10:16 AM

Muriel provides a valuable service. You won't cough up 1.99 for it, AND THEN COMPLAIN. Who's pathetic?

by Anonymousreply 323February 20, 2021 11:18 AM

It's like you're telling Muriel, she's not worth seven cents a day.

by Anonymousreply 324February 20, 2021 11:22 AM

Because she is not

by Anonymousreply 325February 20, 2021 11:28 AM
