Which City?

Thinking of moving. I'm mid twenties and professional. Looking for a nice city that is not crazy and little crime. I like smaller cities to start a potential family and live a nice quiet life. Indianapolis, Indiana Cincinnati, Ohio San Antonio, Texas New Orleans, Louisiana Jackson, Mississippi

by Anonymousreply 72June 2, 2021 9:34 PM

Sorry, it did not make list form

Indianapolis

Cincinnati

San Antonio

New Orleans

Jackson

by Anonymousreply 1February 14, 2021 10:10 PM

In San Antonio all seems to breathe freedom and peace and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 2February 14, 2021 10:11 PM

Tampa.

by Anonymousreply 3February 14, 2021 10:12 PM

Indianapolis is a shithole.

by Anonymousreply 4February 14, 2021 10:12 PM

Your definition of small cities is a little odd. Indianapolis and San Antonio are among the largest U.S. cities.

by Anonymousreply 5February 14, 2021 10:13 PM

Cincinnati is a very family-oriented place. I haven't met a gay man who was happy while living there. I think Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis are much more open-minded in general, especially Columbus. Add it to your list.

by Anonymousreply 6February 14, 2021 10:16 PM

R2 is right. San Antonio is unusual. It’s a very diverse city and a really curious mix of culture and lifestyles. The cost of living is very reasonable, and the food is delicious (produce, dairy, meat, all reasonable and good quality because of the proximity of farms and ranches). The River Walk is pretty charming, and the museums are excellent. The City is known to be a progressive stronghold in the Southwest. It’s really cool and honestly special and nice.

by Anonymousreply 7February 14, 2021 10:18 PM

Asheville is a nice small city.

by Anonymousreply 8February 14, 2021 10:18 PM
The River Walk is pretty charming, and the museums are excellent.

You visit museums in your own city?

seems like an odd thing to look for when you move.

by Anonymousreply 9February 14, 2021 10:22 PM

R9 is a Philistine.

by Anonymousreply 10February 14, 2021 10:24 PM

I grew up in part in San Antonio. I love it. Culturally it's very much part of North Mexico. Your other choices are shitholes.

by Anonymousreply 11February 14, 2021 10:24 PM

Austin

by Anonymousreply 12February 14, 2021 10:24 PM

R12 - been thinking about that.

by Anonymousreply 13February 14, 2021 10:26 PM

r10 thinks she's smart because she goes to MUSEUMS.

by Anonymousreply 14February 14, 2021 10:26 PM

I don't understand the draw of Austin. Maybe ten years ago. Now it's a bunch of Brooklynites and Seattleites and Silicon Valleyers.

by Anonymousreply 15February 14, 2021 10:28 PM

San Antonio would be my favorite to live. Culturally it is majority Hispanic so if you are attracted to Latin men they are plentiful. Have only visited New Orleans briefly but loved the food and architecture.

by Anonymousreply 16February 14, 2021 10:31 PM

Mississippi is the worst state in the country. Why would you even consider Jackson?

by Anonymousreply 17February 14, 2021 10:33 PM

As opposed to Indianapolis, Maine? Or Cincinnati, Florida?

You don’t sound American, OP.

by Anonymousreply 18February 14, 2021 10:33 PM

I love Latino men so San Antonio would be like a smorgasbord for me.

by Anonymousreply 19February 14, 2021 10:34 PM

These cities all all shitholes, with the exception of San Antonio. New Orleans is like a third world country. What about Denver?

by Anonymousreply 20February 14, 2021 10:34 PM

My first choice is Cincinnati, as I have a few friends up there. Indianapolis would be second, I think. Dan Quayle is from there. He was hot.

San Antonio and New Orleans are closer to where I grew up.

Jackson is an up and coming city, right?

by Anonymousreply 21February 14, 2021 10:43 PM

Dumbass alert at R21.

by Anonymousreply 22February 14, 2021 10:44 PM

Are you married already? A small city is nice to have a family, but if you're trying to meet a partner your options might be limited. (Might—dating is different for everybody).

by Anonymousreply 23February 14, 2021 10:47 PM

Shocking! Just shocking that R21 is also OP.

Not sure what his game is, but he’s not American and he’s not being sincere.

by Anonymousreply 24February 14, 2021 10:48 PM

In a previous thread, OP grew up in the early to mid 80s, but now the ass is in his mid twenties.

by Anonymousreply 25February 14, 2021 10:50 PM

Uh what r5.

San Antonio comes in at #24 and Indianapolis at #33.

I'd call it a reach to call either in the largest cities of America. Compared to major cities of America they are absolutely noticeably smaller cities.

by Anonymousreply 26February 14, 2021 10:52 PM

Just move to Detroit, OP. Cheap housing.

by Anonymousreply 27February 14, 2021 10:56 PM

R26, you’re looking at the list of MSAs. In terms of most populous U.S. cities, San Antonio is #7 and Indianapolis is #17.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28February 14, 2021 10:57 PM

Because that is the correct way to look at it r28. Using arbitrary city limits is nonsense. I guess you think Oklahoma City is a bigger city than Miami. Of course not, it's not a useful metric.

by Anonymousreply 29February 14, 2021 11:01 PM

Semantics R29. I agree with R28. I’ve lived in three major cities and never thought of myself as living in the metro area. If you live in the city, that’s what you go by.

by Anonymousreply 30February 14, 2021 11:10 PM

Jackson is a shithole. Your other choices are better.

by Anonymousreply 31February 14, 2021 11:14 PM

Stay far away from NO and Jackson, why even list those two?

by Anonymousreply 32February 14, 2021 11:25 PM

New Orleans is a lot of things, but it’s certainly not low crime. That being said, it’s the only city on your list I’d ever want to live in.

by Anonymousreply 33February 14, 2021 11:31 PM

I think we are being trolled. Jackson had one of the highest homicide rates in the country last year. I am gay and black. I would rather live pretty much anyplace else in the US. They are violent, racist, homophobes.

by Anonymousreply 34February 14, 2021 11:34 PM

Yes, OP is a troll.

by Anonymousreply 35February 14, 2021 11:37 PM

R28 and R30 have it right, plus can add that San Antonio is ranked 13th largest in square miles (just behind Los Angeles). R26's info is as useful as saying some podunk town in Riverside County, CA is 2nd largest because it's part of the Los Angeles MSA.

by Anonymousreply 36February 14, 2021 11:53 PM

Madison, WI

by Anonymousreply 37February 14, 2021 11:57 PM

I don't know about you but we've been talking about Jackson ever since the fire went out.

by Anonymousreply 38February 15, 2021 12:01 AM

Being an official DL sleuth, I believe OP is none other than the infamous Collinboy moron. Read his previous posts and judge for yourself.

by Anonymousreply 39February 15, 2021 12:05 AM

Jackson is it.

by Anonymousreply 40February 15, 2021 3:36 AM

San Antonio is an unremarkable sprawlburg. No one will ever think of it as the seventh largest city because it is so dull and that IS a bullshit metric. Cities are concentrations of people; San Antonio just annexed everything to make a one large city limit as opposed to a bunch of smaller different city limits within the same area. San Antonio has twice the population of Seattle but is in no way comparable because Seattle is way more populated metro area within the same if not smaller space. That equals more offerings and things to do.

For such a LARGE city you'd think there would be more to do than the Riverwalk which is the first and usually only thing locals boast of when trying to polish their little turd of a town. It is definitely better than living in some podunk town like El Paso or Tulsa, but is not on par with other major cities though the residents might aspire for it to be seen as one.

by Anonymousreply 41February 15, 2021 4:01 AM

Charleston, SC

by Anonymousreply 42February 15, 2021 4:12 AM

whore

It was like that when I got there, I swear!

I've heard that Savannah is nice.

Gurl, don't move to TexASS, you been watchin' the news lately? Lol

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2021 6:02 PM

Glad to see someone sane at r41.

Can't believe we have some people trying to argue that San Antonio 🙄 is in the top 10 major cities of America and that Oklahoma City is a bigger city than Miami. That's crap r28 and r30 and you know it.

City limits can be completely arbitrary.

by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2021 6:31 PM
I’ve lived in three major cities and never thought of myself as living in the metro area. If you live in the city, that’s what you go by.

Because you have probably only lived in sprawling cities r30. Try living in Boston, DC or Atlanta and you will quickly understand why trying to do some restriction to only within the lines of the city limits is meaningless.

by Anonymousreply 48February 16, 2021 6:40 PM

Sorry but San Antonio is a SHITHOLE. It is full of dull, provincial hicks whose only frame of reference is San Antonio and South Texas. The city itself is unremarkable, in cosmopolitan, and does not offer the breadth of culture that one would expect of a metro with almost 3 million inhabitants.

When I lived there in the mid-late Aughts, the guys were NOT hot. Lots of fatties, lots of drug use, really downtrodden looking guys. This isn’t to say that everyone is a beast, but attractive, slim or athletic people are truly a rarity in that city.

by Anonymousreply 49February 16, 2021 6:41 PM

Melbourne Florida..we go to the beat of a different drummer here in Fl

by Anonymousreply 50February 16, 2021 6:42 PM

Is Cincinnati the choice then? Is it a fun city?

by Anonymousreply 51February 16, 2021 6:46 PM

Wrong R48. Just accept that people don’t agree with you sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 52February 16, 2021 7:06 PM

I'm a Southern Californian living in exile in San Antonio.

A lot of people I talk to in other cities and towns seem to LOVE San Antonio.

Personally, I don't see what's so great about it.

I don't hate it here, but there's not a lot to love either.

The River Walk is often dirty, with smelly water filled with trash. When it's not dirty, it's pleasant, but basically just another artificial tourist trap, the same as you see in every other city.

They do have a nice array of really nice city parks and trails.

There is nowhere near the cultural diversity I've taken for granted my whole life.

It IS fairly affordable, though.

It's fine. If you want a fairly quiet life, where you can raise a family and still have a decent amount of things to do, you could do worse.

by Anonymousreply 53February 16, 2021 8:30 PM
Melbourne Florida..we go to the beat of a different drummer here in Fl

Indiana sounds awful, in general. It's where Mike Pence is from.

by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2021 10:57 PM

R56 but Dan Quayle is from there too and he is hot

by Anonymousreply 57February 17, 2021 1:55 PM

R57 gross

by Anonymousreply 58June 2, 2021 3:50 PM

OP is a 62 year old cube gay long past his child bearing years, with 19K in savings and he ain't moving, dolls. You love this kind of shit thread though, dontcha? Are you just like OP?

by Anonymousreply 59June 2, 2021 3:57 PM
I don't understand the draw of Austin. Maybe ten years ago. Now it's a bunch of Brooklynites and Seattleites and Silicon Valleyers.

That would be [italic]exactly[/italic] the draw for me.

You don't believe people from out of state ever want to hang out with actual Texans, do you?

by Anonymousreply 60June 2, 2021 4:01 PM

Oh, Indianapolis, [italic]Indiana.[/italic]

I'm glad you specified, OP. I thought you meant the Indianapolis in Paraguay at first.

by Anonymousreply 61June 2, 2021 4:09 PM

The next hot place to move is Greenville, SC. You heard it here first.

by Anonymousreply 62June 2, 2021 4:23 PM

One of the absolute best small cities in the U.S. is Madison, WI. Yet, no one on DL ever seems to mention it.

by Anonymousreply 63June 2, 2021 4:28 PM

All the cities you listed are top 20 in terms of population.

by Anonymousreply 64June 2, 2021 4:29 PM

San Antonio is my vote. Not perfect - but no place is - especially on DL. But from your list, it’s the clear winner IMO. Including for economic reasons - jobs, growth, affordability. The Hispanic majority (?) makes it different than the others - but it’s also what I like about it. Less Texan and more Tejano. Not high glamour - but the Riverwalk and surrounding area have some cool places and interesting historic architecture which is rare for TX. There is a gay scene - not as big as New Orleans - but it’s there. And as a growing city, it has potential to get bigger.

I much prefer it to Austin - which is only an hour or so away if you need an infusion of pseudo-cool hypergentrified overpriced “hip” places. But would choose San Antonio over Austin any day.

by Anonymousreply 65June 2, 2021 4:34 PM
Indiana sounds awful, in general. It's where Mike Pence is from.

Texas has given us Ted Cruz, Louie Gohmert, The Bush's, Gregg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Briscoe Cain and Open Carry Gun laws.

by Anonymousreply 66June 2, 2021 5:06 PM

R9 - news flash: museums often have special exhibits and events. There is certainly life in a museum and, moreover, there isn't much life in a city without them.

by Anonymousreply 67June 2, 2021 5:28 PM

Chapel Hill, NC has a low crime rate and a large metro area. Crime aside, Savannah and New Orleans should be given serious consideration. How about Memphis, TN? Thanks to state law it has no local LGBT ordinance, but it's left leaning and affordable.

by Anonymousreply 68June 2, 2021 8:54 PM

Don't forget Madison, WI and Bloomington, IN(Columbus, IN has beautiful architecture).

by Anonymousreply 69June 2, 2021 9:13 PM

Jackson MS is beyond a shithole. It used to be quite nice, but in the last 25+ years it's gone down rapidly. Crime is ridiculous for a city of its size.

As far as any Louisiana locations, as a native I would advise you wait until the next gubernatorial election before making a decision. Our current governor is incredible, and would be on the covers of magazines nationwide if he were governing NY, TX, MI, CA, or other large state. But the idiot rightwingers here won't be happy until they install another Bobby Jindal in the statehouse.

by Anonymousreply 70June 2, 2021 9:16 PM

I forgot Mobile, AL. Moderately conservative, but it looks like fun!

by Anonymousreply 71June 2, 2021 9:20 PM

Sorry I'm late. Beware of trolls ...

Don't leave Moscow, OP.
