“How the gay party scene short-circuited and became a moneymaking bonanza”

[quote] No longer do individuals attend the circuit to make a political statement; instead, the culture of the circuit seems to be focused almost exclusively on celebrating and seeking hyper-masculine and heteronormative standards of beauty

[quote]hyper-masculine and heteronormative standards of beauty

He would have hated the 70s and 80s with gay men’s mustaches, hairy chests, and enormous hairy bushes. They won’t stop until every gay man is pumped full of estrogen and testosterone blockers, and are castrated.

by Anonymousreply 2February 14, 2021 3:36 PM

R1 who’s that Cuck Dyke?

by Anonymousreply 3February 14, 2021 3:37 PM

I bet he also refuses to eat poo straight from the butt!!

by Anonymousreply 4February 14, 2021 3:37 PM

[quote]For five years, my colleagues and I have been attending these circuit parties to interview attendees. We’ve sought to better understand the positive ways these parties influence gay culture, along with some of the problems they can present.

Awww, the only ones who didn't get laid.

by Anonymousreply 5February 14, 2021 3:39 PM

Hyper-masculine and heteronormative indeed.

Is the author a FTM tranny?

He has that sour faced SJW look about him.

[quote] No longer do individuals attend the circuit to make a political statement

Lol. When was that?

by Anonymousreply 8February 14, 2021 4:55 PM

Anyone who is a “Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Missouri-Columbia” isn’t to be taken seriously.

This article was born out of rage that Visiting Assistant Professor was ignored by all the hot guys at the circuit party.

by Anonymousreply 9February 14, 2021 5:07 PM

What's so hypermasculine about wiggling your butt to dance music?

Look, hanging out with friends and having the time of your life at (circuit) parties sure can be fun when you're drunk or high on drugs. No need to overcomplicate things.

by Anonymousreply 10February 14, 2021 5:49 PM

his issue with the party scene is that it's heteronormative? Speaking of weird priorities...

by Anonymousreply 11February 14, 2021 6:31 PM

Very weak tea.

by Anonymousreply 12February 14, 2021 6:40 PM

[quote] Lol. When was that?

Getting creampied is a statement on personal authority and gender norms!!

by Anonymousreply 13February 14, 2021 6:46 PM

Most everything is life is Tribal. Why is this remotely surprising ?

Interestingly, looking at that picture of all the gay circuit queens in Op’s link, not many are stunningly gorgeous.

They mainly have slim or somewhat muscled bodies and coifed hair but that’s it. Their faces cover the full range of attractiveness.

by Anonymousreply 16February 14, 2021 8:57 PM

[quote] No longer do individuals attend the circuit to make a political statement;

I love that he believes that this once really happened.

by Anonymousreply 17February 14, 2021 9:06 PM

What was the political statement?

by Anonymousreply 18February 14, 2021 9:08 PM

None of this makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 19February 14, 2021 9:09 PM

Political statement: We’re fabulous!

by Anonymousreply 20February 14, 2021 9:10 PM

So many political statements, so little time, I believe was the anthem of struggle

The most memorable political statement being when a methed up queen took a liquid shit on the dance floor at Roseland, the crowd parted for obvious olfactory reasons, but oblivious to it all, he decided it was due to his fabulous dancing and put on a little bonus show by stomping around in the liquid shit for all to endure.

That and the go-go dancers who shoved a live snake and most of a traffic cone up their asses, respectively. Very political.

Those were heady political times.

by Anonymousreply 21February 14, 2021 9:19 PM

Shitting on the dance floor is an acceptable political statement when the DJ fucks your night.

by Anonymousreply 22February 14, 2021 9:21 PM

Was the author born as Christina?

by Anonymousreply 23February 14, 2021 9:24 PM

Lol the only statements being made were “look at my results from the last six months at the gym”, “look at ME” and “I am looking to get laid”.

by Anonymousreply 24February 14, 2021 9:26 PM

I love Circuit Festival.

I'm an oldie, but I loved going with my boyf and Fuckbuddy. It's just hedonistic fun in the sun. Don't need no deep analysis. Just go, enjoy, meet people, fuck and come home.

All the flighty ant-masker Covid pos gays are bashing this thread, gee, what a surprise.

by Anonymousreply 26February 14, 2021 9:48 PM

I wonder if the author thought when he came out that the gay community was an all loving, all accepting community as this reads like a post from someone who just came out and was let down by reality not living up to ideals. I too would like to know when circuit parties were a venue for political statements?

by Anonymousreply 27February 14, 2021 10:25 PM

That pic at R25 is so white.

by Anonymousreply 28February 14, 2021 11:28 PM

R28 So?

by Anonymousreply 29February 14, 2021 11:41 PM

R28 Actually it's heavily Latino in Barcelona. There are a lot of POC from Brazil too. Not many Asian guys though.

[Quote]I wonder if the author thought when he came out that the gay community was an all loving, all accepting community as this reads like a post from someone who just came out and was let down by reality not living up to ideals

He probably sees nothing wrong in rejecting other men for being too fat, ugly, and fem but is completely outraged when other men reject him for being fat, ugly, and fem. Yawn.

by Anonymousreply 31February 15, 2021 12:23 AM

It's as white as a Phish show. Just with more butt fucking.

by Anonymousreply 32February 15, 2021 12:36 AM

What is your point r28?

If you want to see more racial diversity at circuit events, endow a BIPOC scholarship to underwrite plane tickets / hotel reservations / party drugs / Albolene / PreP for ripped men of color to go to circuit parties.

Otherwise, BIPOC circuit queens will have to pay their own way, just like the honky circuit queens.

by Anonymousreply 33February 15, 2021 1:28 AM

They're probably all on those happy drugs like Special K that make you smiley, outgoing and huggy. Turn your frown upside down- or shoo!

by Anonymousreply 34February 15, 2021 1:41 AM

Oh, you sweet summer child ^

by Anonymousreply 35February 15, 2021 1:47 AM

I'm bemused by OP's crowd photo as I try to guestimate the collective double-digit IQ of all those pictured, half-naked Mary himbos.

by Anonymousreply 36February 15, 2021 4:32 AM

Can someone drop this link into Sam Cushing and Travel Nurse Jake G’s IG and ask them their opinion on it please.

[quote] celebrating and seeking hyper-masculine and heteronormative standards of beauty

I’d love to know what’s ‘heteronormative’ about it. If he’s talking about lean, muscular bodies, that’s been the standard since the days of the ancient Greeks. If a preponderance of gay men like something, how can it be ‘heteronormative?’ I went to the circuit parties in Pensacola last weekend, and there was NOTHING heteronormative about it.

by Anonymousreply 38June 4, 2021 10:04 PM

Was this article intended as satire?

by Anonymousreply 39June 4, 2021 10:08 PM

I always thought it was all about party drugs and fucking

by Anonymousreply 40June 4, 2021 10:28 PM

I don’t want to destroy this guy, but please, go to the original article on comment, nicely, on how FAR off base his analysis is. I’m kind of annoyed this got published. His baseline understanding of this part of the gay community is completely off base and he needs to know it if he is going on as a researcher.

As people have mentioned, these parties were never about making a statement. They were about mostly young, fit gay men getting fucked up and then fucking each other.

One could make a case like this about Pride parades, but not circut parties.
