his disdain for everything was different and funny at first. but for me, it wore old fast.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 14, 2021 7:33 AM |
It was unprofessional insofar as these shows serve a particular purpose in the industry and he should have stuck to that.
That being said, he was calling out a bullshit artist active junkie. She was not "a strong woman". She was an active addict doing the junkie shuffle in front of a live audience. Consult your nearest alcoholic, cokehead, or compulsive whatever for a free reenactment.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 14, 2021 7:43 AM |
Yes, horrifying because he actually asked her real questions. She did handle it well though - I’ve never seen LL with any kind of sense of humor about herself.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 14, 2021 7:44 AM |
She looks so much like Rose McGowan in this clip. They both have the same horrible lip augmentation.

This was years past the time I had written off Dave. For years I loved watching his show but his hatefulness finally overwhelmed his remaining entertainment value.

Wow. That was actually a pretty vile interview, made me extremely uncomfortable and felt sorry for her. Making jokes out of her misfortune and the audience somehow finding it funny isn’t clever or witty, it’s just sick.

Letterman is a sexual harasser who should have been metooed at the very beginning. He should not have a Netflix show. He’s mentally deranged and should be canceled into oblivion. This LL interview is barely the tip of the iceberg. He has a LOOOOOONNNGGGG history of verifiable misogyny and harassment.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 14, 2021 8:53 AM |
r16, right. This new age woke shit so utterly chaotic. Addiction is a very real thing, however there is a such thing as personal responsibility. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. The fact that that notion has been taken out of all addiction discussions is sickening. I blame the hard backlash against cult like groups, like AA. Yes addiction is a diseae. However one chooses to become an addict and all ther bad decisins after that are influenced by the addiction but not the end of grace.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 14, 2021 9:14 AM |
Well she was known as a fuck up and a grifter. I don't mind him making fun of that. I think the questions 'we didn't discuss in the pre-interview' were too close to the bone and made for uncomfortable viewing. Never been a fan of hers but I thought she handled herself pretty well.
I used to like his scathing/sarcastic interviews with full-of-shit celebrities, but I think he went too far here. That said, if it was a Kardashian - I'd be laughing my ass off.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 14, 2021 9:15 AM |
Letterman was always a sarcastic asshole. One whole interview was him making fun of Uma Thurman's name. So glad those days are behind us.
Also--and not to defend Lohan--but I'm glad she stood up for herself when she told him she was there to discuss a film. I believe it would've been 'The Canyons'.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 14, 2021 9:20 AM |
Sidenote: There is something I always liked about Lindsay Lohan. She has natural charisma. She really shined through this entire interview. Why is it the charming, the seemingly "real" celebs always have turned down the rabbit hole of drug addiction. Ughh. She so darn likeable. I hope she makes a terrific comeback.

I was on his side in his rivalry with Leno, but Letterman truly was a miserable piece of shit. Colbert should bring him on to discuss the women he sexually harassed over the years, as well as his enduring alcoholism. As much shit as Lindsay gets, she handled herself better than most people could.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 14, 2021 3:08 PM |
If people want to cancel someone for Lindsay Lohan, start with her fucked up parents, especially that mother. You may also want to knock on Wilmer Valderrama's door on that one too.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 14, 2021 3:12 PM |
Letterman is retired. Who fucking cares?!?! God, these people are pathetic. That was comedy then and everyone was learning to navigate the extreme Paparazzi Perez Hilton cult then. I’ve seen Dave be just as “rude” to male guests. This is just a bunch of sensitive millennial alcoholics who are still renting, trying to explain why their lives went wrong by blaming their adolescent idols downfall on Diane Sawyer and David Letterman. Put down the booze and get your shit together.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 14, 2021 4:16 PM |
His whole brand was "asshole," which worked back when he was the little guy taking on people above him, but once he became a big celebrity with a lot of power (enough to hire women who would fuck him as well-paid assistants on the show) it just didn't work anymore. Of course, his fanbase were people who loved assholes, so he was always given a pass.
The women on his show over 40 always seemed to have his number, they'd seen guys like him before.
I remember once he was doing an interview with Tom Snyder, who was being friendly and generous, and they were friends, but Dave was an enormous crabby old bitch, wouldn't look at Tom, kept answering with sarcastic and contentious replies, it was just ugly. Really got the impression that he treated people like dirt because he felt superior.

The article linked to at R14 is spot on. Even at the time it happened, before "#metoo," I was amazed that Letterman got through the sex scandal completely unscathed. I've always chalked it up to the fact that he was still very much at the top of the entertainment industry heap at the time, but of course, that's a terrible reason not to be held accountable. FWIW, I always hated his unrelievedly snarky on-air persona, and I hardly ever watched the show for that reason.

Letterman is an asshole though I find him very amusing at how he trolls his guests and seeing how they react. I loved the guests who would stand up for themselves and fire an insult back. I do believe he is a pervert too and once there is evidence then he will see his day in court.
Now onto Lindsay. Yeah she was messed up by her greedy stage mom and maybe Hollywood weirdos but she's also an entitled and spoiled brat who was a massive drug addict and committed various crimes. She is an adult and should be held accountable. I hate how people are revising history and making it seem like Lindsay, Paris and Britney were these fragile sweet princesses destroyed by evil white men. Fuck no, all these chicks were beneficiaries of white girl privilege and got away with abusing drugs, flashing their vaginas (anyone else would be registered as a sex offender btw), DUIs and hit-and-runs, violent behavior, Paris even said the N-word and F-word on camera and much more we don't know about.

@r46, this reminds me of the time Johnny Carson had Dolly Parton on his show, it was right after Carson negotiated a multi-million dollar annual salary, a big deal in those days. He was just sitting at his desk tapping his pencil and staring at Dolly's chest when he blurted out, "I'd give a year's salary to peek under your blouse".
Can you imagine how canceled he'd be today?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 15, 2021 3:40 PM |

That’s exactly what the term ‘canceled’ is. It isn’t a co-opting of it. The person upthread who said people have too much time on their hands because of COVID is correct.
I’m not defending Letterman here; I haven’t even watched the interview. But this tedious shit has been going on all during COVID. It started before COVID, of course, but it’s really picked up during the pandemic.

Or can they go on a national talk show and talk about their movie/music/etc. and have their personal lives left out of it?
Better yet, can people stick to the pre-interview?
This is similar to what Ellen got in trouble for while interviewing Mariah; ie. not sticking to the pre-interview and making people uncomfortable.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 15, 2021 6:50 PM |
Never like David Letterman. Don't like his brand of humor. Smarmy. Going after Lohan like wasn't right. But they should have done gone after him in 2013. Here you had a man twice her age trying to get laughs out of a younger woman's addictions.
NBC protected him from sexual harassment accusations.
It is different with Mariah Carey and Ellen. If you don't want to discuss certain subjects, just say "I'd rather not discuss that." Mariah's a big girl...she should followed the lead of Cher.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I have newfound respect for Cher.

Say what you will about Letterman, but I LOVED his interviews with the likes of Teri Garr and Sandra Bernhard. He probably couldn’t do interviews like this nowadays with the the current “cancel” culture. These women could go toe-to-toe with him which was why they were so good and such popular guests.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 15, 2021 11:11 PM |
Garr and Bernhard were in on the joke. Completely different scenario.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 15, 2021 11:36 PM |
It was still creepy to watch Letterman act out his obsession with Terri Garr by making her take that gratuitous shower during the interview, whether she was in on the joke or not.
Meanwhile, he owed at least half of his career success to his writer/girlfriend at the time, Merrill Markoe. The show went noticeably downhill after she left Late Night in the late 80s. He was an ungrateful bastard, on top of all his other faults.

Women could be accomplished. They can win an Academy award or a Nobel prize for science, but to men they are just there for the taking. For the humiliation. For the verbal rape. And to be discarded.
Letterman was a sexist, misogynistic asshole like many men.

Did it ever occur to anyone here that the reason cancel culture has exploded in the last five years was because an admitted rapist was elected president, practically destroyed our democracy, and is still calling the shots while in exile in Florida.
Every little weakling who says cancel culture caused Trump to win has it backwards.
Trump is the cause of cancel culture. And while people like him get away with rape, cancel culture will only get stronger.

R84, if you watched the clip you’d catch Lindsay saying his questions didn’t come up in the pre-interview. Additionally, that was her 5th appearance so she clearly had a degree of faith he would treat her with some respect.
For what it’s worth, she appeared on his show the following year, so she must not have been too horrified.

R81, I respect your sincerity but "canceling" really isn't the solution. Fighting and winning new victories is the only way forward. You can lick your wounds once, but you have to move on. Being mired in victimhood is failure. It's easy and comfortable, and you'll get sympathy, but it doesn't mean progress.
That's what this is- wallowing in past wrongs. It's a waste of time and energy.

His obsession with Joan Collins made me feel weird. He regularly insulted her because of her age and her marriages, and then he harassed her for not appearing on his show. There was one bizarre incident where she was appearing on a show, and Letterman's camera crew convinced a staff person to let them in to ambush Joan.
