David Letterman is being CANCELED for this interview with Lindsay Lohan

He needs to be CANCELED!!!

Oh, wait. Does he even have a show anymore? What are we canceling again...

his disdain for everything was different and funny at first. but for me, it wore old fast.

by Anonymousreply 1February 14, 2021 7:33 AM

It was unprofessional insofar as these shows serve a particular purpose in the industry and he should have stuck to that.

That being said, he was calling out a bullshit artist active junkie. She was not "a strong woman". She was an active addict doing the junkie shuffle in front of a live audience. Consult your nearest alcoholic, cokehead, or compulsive whatever for a free reenactment.

by Anonymousreply 2February 14, 2021 7:43 AM

Yes, horrifying because he actually asked her real questions. She did handle it well though - I’ve never seen LL with any kind of sense of humor about herself.

by Anonymousreply 3February 14, 2021 7:44 AM

She looks so much like Rose McGowan in this clip. They both have the same horrible lip augmentation.

by Anonymousreply 4February 14, 2021 7:48 AM

This was years past the time I had written off Dave. For years I loved watching his show but his hatefulness finally overwhelmed his remaining entertainment value.

Angry white Boomers co-opting "canceled" to mean "facing even mild Internet criticism for a day over some dumb shit you pulled" is such an interesting phenomenon.

The powerless, unemployable Twitterers are wreaking vengeance on the millionaires.

by Anonymousreply 8February 14, 2021 8:19 AM

Won't someone think of the millionaires?

by Anonymousreply 9February 14, 2021 8:23 AM

She didn't bullshit him but was trying to limit how much she would talk about addition. She was booked to plug some movie.

by Anonymousreply 10February 14, 2021 8:25 AM

Wow. That was actually a pretty vile interview, made me extremely uncomfortable and felt sorry for her. Making jokes out of her misfortune and the audience somehow finding it funny isn’t clever or witty, it’s just sick.

Letterman is a sexual harasser who should have been metooed at the very beginning. He should not have a Netflix show. He’s mentally deranged and should be canceled into oblivion. This LL interview is barely the tip of the iceberg. He has a LOOOOOONNNGGGG history of verifiable misogyny and harassment.

Women won't be happy until all men are faggots.

by Anonymousreply 15February 14, 2021 8:52 AM

Is this after she harassed a mother and daughter in a coke induced road rage incident and tried to blame the whole thing on black dudes? I’m not sure the kids did their research..

by Anonymousreply 16February 14, 2021 8:53 AM

r16, right. This new age woke shit so utterly chaotic. Addiction is a very real thing, however there is a such thing as personal responsibility. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. The fact that that notion has been taken out of all addiction discussions is sickening. I blame the hard backlash against cult like groups, like AA. Yes addiction is a diseae. However one chooses to become an addict and all ther bad decisins after that are influenced by the addiction but not the end of grace.

by Anonymousreply 17February 14, 2021 8:57 AM

@r15, "Women won't be happy until all men are faggots"

Works for me :)

by Anonymousreply 18February 14, 2021 9:11 AM

R18 - where then shall we find rough daddy tops?

by Anonymousreply 19February 14, 2021 9:14 AM

Well she was known as a fuck up and a grifter. I don't mind him making fun of that. I think the questions 'we didn't discuss in the pre-interview' were too close to the bone and made for uncomfortable viewing. Never been a fan of hers but I thought she handled herself pretty well.

I used to like his scathing/sarcastic interviews with full-of-shit celebrities, but I think he went too far here. That said, if it was a Kardashian - I'd be laughing my ass off.

by Anonymousreply 20February 14, 2021 9:15 AM

Letterman was always a sarcastic asshole. One whole interview was him making fun of Uma Thurman's name. So glad those days are behind us.

Also--and not to defend Lohan--but I'm glad she stood up for herself when she told him she was there to discuss a film. I believe it would've been 'The Canyons'.

by Anonymousreply 21February 14, 2021 9:20 AM

Sidenote: There is something I always liked about Lindsay Lohan. She has natural charisma. She really shined through this entire interview. Why is it the charming, the seemingly "real" celebs always have turned down the rabbit hole of drug addiction. Ughh. She so darn likeable. I hope she makes a terrific comeback.

by Anonymousreply 22February 14, 2021 9:22 AM

I was critical of Dave earlier in the thread but I have to cut him some slack on this one. What mortal could resist this modern Helen of Troy,.

Also, what ever happened to simply not watching someone or something you don't like or is obnoxious?

by Anonymousreply 28February 14, 2021 12:22 PM

Letterman just needs to announce he's a woman named Chrissy, dye (what's left of) his hair blue, and he'll be proclaimed a stunning and brave heroine!

by Anonymousreply 29February 14, 2021 12:37 PM

That's always been David's m.o. and Lindsay came across likeable. But that interview works. Maybe it's even scripted who knows.

by Anonymousreply 30February 14, 2021 3:00 PM

She's a slag.

by Anonymousreply 31February 14, 2021 3:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 32February 14, 2021 3:02 PM

Why did Lilo go on a comedy show if she didn't want a comedian to make fun of her?

by Anonymousreply 33February 14, 2021 3:06 PM

I was on his side in his rivalry with Leno, but Letterman truly was a miserable piece of shit. Colbert should bring him on to discuss the women he sexually harassed over the years, as well as his enduring alcoholism. As much shit as Lindsay gets, she handled herself better than most people could.

by Anonymousreply 34February 14, 2021 3:08 PM

If people want to cancel someone for Lindsay Lohan, start with her fucked up parents, especially that mother. You may also want to knock on Wilmer Valderrama's door on that one too.

by Anonymousreply 35February 14, 2021 3:10 PM

Letterman: could be an asshole. Letterman's blackmailer: bat-shit crazy asshole. I knew a member of Halderman's family----they are ALL bat shit crazy assholes. Had to get an order of protection. Never thought that I would feel sympathy for Letterman, but I did....

by Anonymousreply 36February 14, 2021 3:12 PM

Letterman is retired. Who fucking cares?!?! God, these people are pathetic. That was comedy then and everyone was learning to navigate the extreme Paparazzi Perez Hilton cult then. I’ve seen Dave be just as “rude” to male guests. This is just a bunch of sensitive millennial alcoholics who are still renting, trying to explain why their lives went wrong by blaming their adolescent idols downfall on Diane Sawyer and David Letterman. Put down the booze and get your shit together.

by Anonymousreply 37February 14, 2021 4:16 PM

His whole brand was "asshole," which worked back when he was the little guy taking on people above him, but once he became a big celebrity with a lot of power (enough to hire women who would fuck him as well-paid assistants on the show) it just didn't work anymore. Of course, his fanbase were people who loved assholes, so he was always given a pass.

The women on his show over 40 always seemed to have his number, they'd seen guys like him before.

I remember once he was doing an interview with Tom Snyder, who was being friendly and generous, and they were friends, but Dave was an enormous crabby old bitch, wouldn't look at Tom, kept answering with sarcastic and contentious replies, it was just ugly. Really got the impression that he treated people like dirt because he felt superior.

by Anonymousreply 40February 14, 2021 4:59 PM

Stars want to go on talk shows to publicize their latest projects. We’re supposed to cancel him for going off course and talking about her well-publicized life, including drug rehab???

How dare he bring that up, right?!!

Jesus I'm afraid these youngsters won't be able to cope when they discover old footage from the post war era.

by Anonymousreply 42February 14, 2021 5:10 PM

Lindsay was a trainwreck who burnt every bridge in Hollywood with her self destructive behavior. Let's not pretend the woman didn't get a million and one chances at a comeback and squandered each and every one.

Let's also not forget her attempt to blame some criminal act she did on a black kid.

That was mean she didn’t agree to that and whether or not she was a shitty person or a junky she was a fucked up young person. She wanted to talk about things that would help her career she has a right to try and make a living. It would be like having a show like intervention where you laugh at the addicts.

by Anonymousreply 48February 14, 2021 5:38 PM

Aww, poor Janet. Aww, poor Britney. Aww, poor Lindsay.

Do these women have no agency of their own? Can they not think or speak for themselves?

by Anonymousreply 49February 14, 2021 5:51 PM

The article linked to at R14 is spot on. Even at the time it happened, before "#metoo," I was amazed that Letterman got through the sex scandal completely unscathed. I've always chalked it up to the fact that he was still very much at the top of the entertainment industry heap at the time, but of course, that's a terrible reason not to be held accountable. FWIW, I always hated his unrelievedly snarky on-air persona, and I hardly ever watched the show for that reason.

by Anonymousreply 50February 14, 2021 5:58 PM

R49, It appears not. 4th Wave feminists are beyond bizarre to me.

by Anonymousreply 51February 14, 2021 6:40 PM

He’s an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 52February 14, 2021 7:01 PM

Letterman is an asshole though I find him very amusing at how he trolls his guests and seeing how they react. I loved the guests who would stand up for themselves and fire an insult back. I do believe he is a pervert too and once there is evidence then he will see his day in court.

Now onto Lindsay. Yeah she was messed up by her greedy stage mom and maybe Hollywood weirdos but she's also an entitled and spoiled brat who was a massive drug addict and committed various crimes. She is an adult and should be held accountable. I hate how people are revising history and making it seem like Lindsay, Paris and Britney were these fragile sweet princesses destroyed by evil white men. Fuck no, all these chicks were beneficiaries of white girl privilege and got away with abusing drugs, flashing their vaginas (anyone else would be registered as a sex offender btw), DUIs and hit-and-runs, violent behavior, Paris even said the N-word and F-word on camera and much more we don't know about.

by Anonymousreply 53February 14, 2021 10:32 PM

No one is canceling him, OP. They're criticizing him. Republicans think no one can be criticized anymore, I guess....except for Colin Kaepernick, The Dixie Chicks, and all the liberal stars they hate

by Anonymousreply 54February 14, 2021 10:37 PM

R49 must think straight men are too fragile to handle any criticism

by Anonymousreply 55February 14, 2021 10:38 PM

R28, what ever happened to being able to criticize other people without conservatives whining about cancel culture?

People can criticize Lohan if they want

People can criticize Letterman if they want

If you don't like it - leave!

by Anonymousreply 56February 14, 2021 10:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 60February 15, 2021 2:34 PM

It's sort of sad to watch, knowing that the rehab didn't take and she wound up a washup old whore in Dubai.

by Anonymousreply 61February 15, 2021 3:16 PM

@r46, this reminds me of the time Johnny Carson had Dolly Parton on his show, it was right after Carson negotiated a multi-million dollar annual salary, a big deal in those days. He was just sitting at his desk tapping his pencil and staring at Dolly's chest when he blurted out, "I'd give a year's salary to peek under your blouse".

Can you imagine how canceled he'd be today?

by Anonymousreply 62February 15, 2021 3:40 PM

^ He didn't just randomly blurt it out. They were talking about her figure and Dolly was remarking that contrary to what many people thought, her breasts are real. That's when Johnny unexpectedly said that and it was hilarious.

This is mild compared to how Jimmy Kimmel joked about her in his monologues and made light of her various legal and automobile mishaps.

by Anonymousreply 66February 15, 2021 4:54 PM

Letterman never suffered fools gladly and often openly showed disdain for those he didn't like. It wasn't just towards some women he did to male guests too.

by Anonymousreply 67February 15, 2021 4:58 PM

It’s time for the straight white male talk host genre to die. Their ratings are all terrible, and their dull takes on culture are trite and old and irrelevant. Enough.

by Anonymousreply 68February 15, 2021 6:16 PM

At what point does cancel culture cross the line into elder abuse?

by Anonymousreply 69February 15, 2021 6:26 PM

[quote] Angry white Boomers co-opting "canceled" to mean "facing even mild Internet criticism for a day over some dumb shit you pulled" is such an interesting phenomenon.

That’s exactly what the term ‘canceled’ is. It isn’t a co-opting of it. The person upthread who said people have too much time on their hands because of COVID is correct.

I’m not defending Letterman here; I haven’t even watched the interview. But this tedious shit has been going on all during COVID. It started before COVID, of course, but it’s really picked up during the pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 70February 15, 2021 6:49 PM

[quote]Do these women have no agency of their own? Can they not think or speak for themselves?

Or can they go on a national talk show and talk about their movie/music/etc. and have their personal lives left out of it?

Better yet, can people stick to the pre-interview?

This is similar to what Ellen got in trouble for while interviewing Mariah; ie. not sticking to the pre-interview and making people uncomfortable.

Never like David Letterman. Don't like his brand of humor. Smarmy. Going after Lohan like wasn't right. But they should have done gone after him in 2013. Here you had a man twice her age trying to get laughs out of a younger woman's addictions.

NBC protected him from sexual harassment accusations.

It is different with Mariah Carey and Ellen. If you don't want to discuss certain subjects, just say "I'd rather not discuss that." Mariah's a big girl...she should followed the lead of Cher.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I have newfound respect for Cher.

by Anonymousreply 72February 15, 2021 7:04 PM

When I was younger, my parents hated Letterman. The Apprentice too, when they saw Donald back then they would tell me “Change the channel! That guy’s an asshole.” We had a few things right in the 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 73February 15, 2021 7:24 PM

News to all the posters displaying their self-righteous indignation over Letterman:

David Letterman didn't give a flying fuck what you thought then, and now that he's retired and living off his hundreds of millions of dollars in retirement, sure as hell doesn't give a flying fuck what you think now.

by Anonymousreply 74February 15, 2021 7:33 PM

News to you R74, he isn't going to suck your dick.

by Anonymousreply 75February 15, 2021 10:47 PM

Say what you will about Letterman, but I LOVED his interviews with the likes of Teri Garr and Sandra Bernhard. He probably couldn’t do interviews like this nowadays with the the current “cancel” culture. These women could go toe-to-toe with him which was why they were so good and such popular guests.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 76February 15, 2021 11:11 PM

Garr and Bernhard were in on the joke. Completely different scenario.

by Anonymousreply 77February 15, 2021 11:36 PM

It was still creepy to watch Letterman act out his obsession with Terri Garr by making her take that gratuitous shower during the interview, whether she was in on the joke or not.

Meanwhile, he owed at least half of his career success to his writer/girlfriend at the time, Merrill Markoe. The show went noticeably downhill after she left Late Night in the late 80s. He was an ungrateful bastard, on top of all his other faults.

by Anonymousreply 78February 16, 2021 2:37 AM

Women could be accomplished. They can win an Academy award or a Nobel prize for science, but to men they are just there for the taking. For the humiliation. For the verbal rape. And to be discarded.

Letterman was a sexist, misogynistic asshole like many men.

by Anonymousreply 80February 16, 2021 3:16 AM

Did it ever occur to anyone here that the reason cancel culture has exploded in the last five years was because an admitted rapist was elected president, practically destroyed our democracy, and is still calling the shots while in exile in Florida.

Every little weakling who says cancel culture caused Trump to win has it backwards.

Trump is the cause of cancel culture. And while people like him get away with rape, cancel culture will only get stronger.

We aren't victims here. Victims keep quiet. We refuse to shut up.

R84, if you watched the clip you’d catch Lindsay saying his questions didn’t come up in the pre-interview. Additionally, that was her 5th appearance so she clearly had a degree of faith he would treat her with some respect.

For what it’s worth, she appeared on his show the following year, so she must not have been too horrified.

by Anonymousreply 85February 16, 2021 4:43 PM

[quote] Really got the impression that he treated people like dirt because he felt superior

Just the opposite. He does it because he feels inferior to that person in some way.

by Anonymousreply 86February 16, 2021 5:07 PM

R81, I respect your sincerity but "canceling" really isn't the solution. Fighting and winning new victories is the only way forward. You can lick your wounds once, but you have to move on. Being mired in victimhood is failure. It's easy and comfortable, and you'll get sympathy, but it doesn't mean progress.

That's what this is- wallowing in past wrongs. It's a waste of time and energy.

by Anonymousreply 87February 16, 2021 5:43 PM

His obsession with Joan Collins made me feel weird. He regularly insulted her because of her age and her marriages, and then he harassed her for not appearing on his show. There was one bizarre incident where she was appearing on a show, and Letterman's camera crew convinced a staff person to let them in to ambush Joan.

by Anonymousreply 88February 16, 2021 6:15 PM

R87, you are the one trying to make rich, famous guys like Letterman into victims by claiming their life will end if someone criticizes them

Rich, famous people aren't victims. And please learn the difference between criticism and cancelation

by Anonymousreply 89February 16, 2021 6:17 PM
