Trump Acquitted

Shocker!

Small clap to GOP Senators Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Sasse, Toomey

by Anonymousreply 1February 13, 2021 7:57 PM

Not shocking, yet I'm glad the effort was made.

by Anonymousreply 2February 13, 2021 7:58 PM

Didn’t they just vote this morning to allow witnesses, or was that a 60 vote threshold, and did it fail?

by Anonymousreply 3February 13, 2021 8:06 PM

r3, the prosecution decided to withdraw witnesses after the motion to have them passed.

by Anonymousreply 4February 13, 2021 8:07 PM

Trump has proven time and time again that he is above the law

Trump 2024 is already trending

America is over

by Anonymousreply 5February 13, 2021 8:08 PM

Now it’s up to God to kill that motherfucker, otherwise we’re screwed.

by Anonymousreply 6February 13, 2021 8:14 PM

Well, if we follow the HRC/Benghazi playbook the rethugs used, we can re-litigate this issue over and over and over and over and over, as well as waste millions on investigations and hearings for many years to come.

by Anonymousreply 7February 13, 2021 8:15 PM

Can it, R5. We had quite enough "This isn't over!" fear porn on DL between the election and the inauguration. Trump is fucking over. Odds are he'll be dead by 2024, and even if he isn't, he's dead politically. America will have moved on by the time of the next election. He had his time, and, thank god, it's over.

by Anonymousreply 8February 13, 2021 8:15 PM

The whole charade was farce for your benefit. Pelosi and Schumer had their shot at him the last time and failed. If they wanted to try again it should have been done before he left office.

by Anonymousreply 9February 13, 2021 8:18 PM

R3 it passed and then Dems apparently caved.

by Anonymousreply 10February 13, 2021 8:19 PM

Stick it to libs! He gets away with everything ! Tee hee hee! This president and the terrorist act of January 06, 2021 diminished this country's first world status.

It's over for reals.

by Anonymousreply 11February 13, 2021 8:21 PM

Whether Dems caved or not, it wouldn't have mattered. The majority of Republicans, many of whom qualify as co-conspirators, would never have voted to convict him.

by Anonymousreply 12February 13, 2021 8:22 PM

Even though he was acquitted as expected, the optics suck. Historically, he was impeached twice. The second time the vote was 57 to 43. That's a lot of votes to convict and it was bi-partisan. Impeachment and his desire to be king will hang on him and his presidency forever. He will be criminally indicted within a year.

by Anonymousreply 13February 13, 2021 8:26 PM

The Republican party is the Covid-19 of the politics.

by Anonymousreply 14February 13, 2021 8:27 PM

I hope SDNY is on him like a plague.

by Anonymousreply 15February 13, 2021 8:27 PM

r14 sorry I meant "of politics".

by Anonymousreply 16February 13, 2021 8:31 PM

I have to let it go for my health. Never have I hated anyone the way I hate him and the GOP. There have been other stressful events in my life to account for my anxiety and depression, and if trump had happened 10 years ago I could have handled it better, but at this time in life it truly pushed me into a deep depression and caused severe enough anxiety to warrent medication. So, if they pay in my lifetime great, but I suspect that will not happen. As long as the motherfucker never holds office again I will be alright. The alternative is unthinkable.

by Anonymousreply 17February 13, 2021 8:36 PM

Those bastards, but we all saw it coming. I give credit to Romney once again.

by Anonymousreply 18February 13, 2021 8:39 PM

The Repug Senators apparently are not concerned that Trump didn't care one iota if they were attacked or worse the the mob that was clearly following his orders. Those senators did not full fill their oath of office, but rather put their reelection concerns ahead of the country. Of course dumb voters will reelect them for standing up for democracy.

by Anonymousreply 19February 13, 2021 8:44 PM

Could be worse. He could have been re-elected. Can you imagine what 4 more years of his lunacy would have done to the country. Now it’s time to clean up his mess and move on. I really do believe things will get better over the next few months.

by Anonymousreply 20February 13, 2021 8:45 PM

I am thankful every day he didn't get re-elected. We dodged a big bullet there.

by Anonymousreply 21February 13, 2021 8:47 PM

Cowardice!

If only the rioters had succeeded in their mission

by Anonymousreply 22February 13, 2021 8:48 PM

If the GOP had won the House two elections ago, all of Trump’s evil would have been swept completely under the rug. Trump would have won another term and continued his destruction of democracy

by Anonymousreply 23February 13, 2021 8:49 PM

They just let the fascist go.

by Anonymousreply 24February 13, 2021 8:49 PM

They must immediately invoke the 14th amendment and ban Trump from ever holding office again. All they need is 51 votes. They have 57. Let’s get it done.

by Anonymousreply 25February 13, 2021 8:51 PM

Everyone is full of shit.

what do you think the optics would be if a pack of mooselambs conveyed on the nation's capitol? Missles would be deployed. Nonstop media coverage demanding WW3. "Insurgents"? "Protesters"? "Trump supporters"?

terrorists.

by Anonymousreply 26February 13, 2021 8:52 PM

Reinstalled.

Not.

Reelected.

by Anonymousreply 27February 13, 2021 8:55 PM

I finally figured out what r26 meant by mooselambs, took me a minute.

by Anonymousreply 28February 13, 2021 8:57 PM

What is sick is that the pandemic is probably the thing that prevented him from being re-installed.

by Anonymousreply 29February 13, 2021 9:00 PM

Twice impeached, twice acquitted! 🤡

by Anonymousreply 30February 13, 2021 9:06 PM

Don't fret. Bad decisions, especially self serving bad decisions, have a way of coming back and slapping people in the face when they least expect it.

by Anonymousreply 31February 13, 2021 9:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 32February 13, 2021 9:14 PM
They must immediately invoke the 14th amendment and ban Trump from ever holding office again. All they need is 51 votes. They have 57. Let’s get it done.

Um, you don’t get how this works, do you?

by Anonymousreply 34February 13, 2021 9:20 PM

Of course, no one is surprised by the outcome. BUT...

We are truly surprised by the excellent case presented by the Democrat Impeachment Management Team. They were superb - succinct, passionate, and on message. Truly a great team effort.

IMHO

by Anonymousreply 35February 13, 2021 10:10 PM

I’ll be honest I didn’t even pay attention to any of it because it was so predictable what would happen. I’m glad I’m off Twitter now so I’m not sucked into the 24/7 misery circle jerk that will probably last for a week over there. It’s been 4 years of pretty much nonstop stress and anxiety over this stupid fucking man and I’m just done. I’ll leave it to the criminal courts, SDNY or maybe God will finally have his fat ass stroke out on the golf course. I’ll continue to never vote republican and vote/donate to/volunteer for the Dems. That’s all I can do.

by Anonymousreply 36February 13, 2021 10:15 PM
except when it comes to Dotard... a lifetime of no consequences!

Oh that's not true at all. Trump has paid the consequences time and time again in his lifetime. He's failed so many times in business there's not room to list all his failures. He lost his bid for reelection (probably his biggest failure), his business empire is in ruins and his debts will start coming due sooner than later.

Oh yes, he's paid the consequences and will continue to do so.

And R34, I just heard on one news show that there is a way that Congress can still invoke the 14th amendment against Trump.

by Anonymousreply 37February 13, 2021 10:17 PM

Tomorrow, every major newspaper in the nation should start putting the faces of every Republican who voted to acquit on the front page with the labels "COMPLICIT" & "COWARD" underneath each photo. Every one of those people need to be named and shamed for a long time to come. Never let them rest.

by Anonymousreply 38February 13, 2021 10:19 PM

charge him at the state level and convict or ge will win in 2024. The writing is on the wall and his loyal base of white trash and others isn't going anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 39February 13, 2021 10:22 PM
The writing is on the wall and his loyal base of white trash and others isn't going anywhere.

His loyal base of white trash isn't large enough to get him reelected. He's lost suburban white women and college educated white males, and he's driven up turnout among African Americans.

by Anonymousreply 40February 13, 2021 10:32 PM

R40

hopefully you're right

I would love to be wrong, trust me.

by Anonymousreply 41February 13, 2021 10:34 PM

His punishment has only started. Death by a thousand cuts. Just wait.

by Anonymousreply 42February 13, 2021 10:36 PM

I’m glad he was acquitted and will hang round as a albatross around the Republican party’s neck

by Anonymousreply 43February 13, 2021 10:38 PM

Wouldn’t it be great if the media ignored Trump and we wouldn’t have to see his name anywhere? If anyone deserves to be canceled it’s him and his tribe.

by Anonymousreply 44February 13, 2021 10:46 PM

R39, he didn’t win this time even with his base. He’s since lost many many moderates and non-sycophants.

That’s why I don’t understand La Senatrix’s fear of him. I think he’s more afraid of being accosted in public again.

by Anonymousreply 45February 13, 2021 10:58 PM

Out of 50 republican Senators, I don't think anyone expect us to find 17 of them with any ethics. The fact that they found 7 of them with ethics is rather shocking in and of itself.

Why did they decide not to call the witnesses?

by Anonymousreply 48February 13, 2021 11:17 PM

Trump’s bitches came through

by Anonymousreply 49February 13, 2021 11:20 PM

From what I understand, R48, it was because they Rs basically threatened to call hundreds of witnesses which would then delay bills from passing like Covid relief.

by Anonymousreply 50February 13, 2021 11:20 PM
Why did they decide not to call the witnesses?

They wanted to get home before Valentine's Day.

by Anonymousreply 51February 13, 2021 11:20 PM

The votes would have been more or less the same with witnesses. Only djt as a witness would have made a difference and there’s no way the coward would show.

by Anonymousreply 52February 13, 2021 11:28 PM

This has to be used as a stick to beat Republican senators with. Vote them out.

by Anonymousreply 53February 13, 2021 11:37 PM

Trump's goal was to have his psycho hillbilly commandos rape, torture and murder Pelosi- and she knows it. Same fate he had in mind for Gov. Whitmer.

I guess he'll have to be satisfied with PTSD: ever time those politicians hear a loud noise or someone hollering, they'll think the mob is back.

by Anonymousreply 54February 13, 2021 11:49 PM

Trump acquitted and now it will be Cuomo and Newsom's nuts on the chopping block. The media is thirsty and Trump is done now.

by Anonymousreply 55February 13, 2021 11:51 PM

This is interesting.

7 Republicans voted to convict his orange fat ass. That is HUGE. The Republican Party has a serious split going on, it'll be interesting to see who prevails, the normals or the GQPers.

As for Trump, NOW the walls will really start closing in with lawsuits and hopefully criminal charges from SDNY or Georgia. The wheels of justice move slow people--it takes time to investigate and prosecute, so unwet your chiffon, have a drink, and relax. This was a good day.

by Anonymousreply 57February 14, 2021 12:07 AM

SO are we going to have a repeat the 1st week of march? i forget if it's march 4 or march 6...

would be shocking and amazing if yet again we have another insurrection and nothing is done about it this time..

by Anonymousreply 58February 14, 2021 12:10 AM

R58 I think the National Guard has been deployed to DC through mid-late March, so good luck you MAGA dipshits going up against them. I just hope the National Guard mows them all down.

by Anonymousreply 59February 14, 2021 12:12 AM
If they wanted to try again it should have been done before he left office.

Just for the record - Trump WAS impeached before he left office. The only reason his trial didn't happen while he was still in office was because Mitch McConnell whined about "Oh, we don't enough time" and he stalled and stalled until it was too late. And then he came up with the ridiculous "Well now it's too late to try him because he's left office" argument.

by Anonymousreply 60February 14, 2021 12:15 AM

People are addicted to Trump. I'll be happy when this is over. Biden is bland and boring, but that's fine. Let Trump go. The threads could stop and we could move on.

by Anonymousreply 61February 14, 2021 12:23 AM

Faaaaaaannnnnniiiiiii!!!!!

Your turn, Girl. Please, we need you and Tish make Trump hate and fear Black women even more than he already does. Take his ass down.

Counting the days until the Fulton Co grand jury convenes in April.....

by Anonymousreply 62February 14, 2021 12:38 AM

On the other hand, it makes the legal troubles of the rioters that much sweeter. They didn’t get their precious pardon, and to top it off, their dear leader has been acquitted. Hee hee.

by Anonymousreply 63February 14, 2021 12:46 AM

I feel so stupid. I really thought that justice would be served. That more than just 7 Rs would put party aside and do the right thing. I feel so dumb and disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 64February 14, 2021 1:05 AM

I just keep in the back of my mind the old saying that has proven true in my life far more than times than I can count, that everything happens for a good reason. Trump won this little skirmish but he has many more battles to fight. Battles that will have far worse consequences than if he had been found guilty in the Senate trial. Trump's fate is coming, and it's not the fate he's hoping for.

by Anonymousreply 65February 14, 2021 1:07 AM

Things will be different for Trump now that he's no longer President and doesn't have the power of the Republicans behind him pulling the strings and covering up for him. He may still have a few of them in his corner, but with Lindsey being investigated now, those Republicans aren't going to stick around in case they may be next. Trump is going to be on his own, and we've seen the caliber of lawyers that he got for the impeachment trial. He's going down.

by Anonymousreply 66February 14, 2021 1:16 AM
Things will be different for Trump now that he's no longer President and doesn't have the power of the Republicans behind him pulling the strings and covering up for him.

by Anonymousreply 67February 14, 2021 1:18 AM

If the Senate stops Trump from running for office again, will the Supreme Court uphold it?

by Anonymousreply 68February 14, 2021 1:24 AM

R68 California has become the epicenter of the pandemic in the US and if it continues to go in that direction it may become the epicenter of the world. More daily cases nationwide than 3 months ago and and the economy is headed for worse failure and the vaccine distribution is fraught is currently trial and error and there's the possibility that the vaccine may not be strong enough or effective against newer deadlier strains. With so many immediate concerns why are you still worried about tRUMP? Get over it!

by Anonymousreply 69February 14, 2021 1:53 AM
If the Senate stops Trump from running for office again, will the Supreme Court uphold it?

They can’t do that.

by Anonymousreply 70February 14, 2021 1:54 AM

There's probably huge partying at Mar-a-Lago tonight. Not only did Tweety win again, but it proved the Republicans are still terrified of him.

Tomorrow- golf with Lindsey?

by Anonymousreply 71February 14, 2021 2:01 AM
They can’t do that.

Like hell they can't. 14th Amendment, Section 3:
No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

There is truth to what you are saying, R69, but things are not quite as dire as you are stating. This was the case in November - January, but the numbers are declining and things seem to be heading in the right direction. Still, I agree. Get the fuck over Trump. What happened to unity? This has been pure political theatre at the expense of the tax payers, has added further division, and has distracted from the efforts to eradicated COVID.

Trump needs to earn money now. All those bills coming due, and having to maintain the billionaire lifestyle.

He knows he coasted on the Obama economy. Why would he damage whatever legacy he has by checking back into that dreary White House as an 80-yr. old man?

Oh he'll pretend he's running. He's a yuge fundraiser for the Rethugs.
This has been pure political theatre at the expense of the tax payers, has added further division, and has distracted from the efforts to eradicated COVID.

It's kind of a matter of principle, you know? A President who encouraged his followers to invade the Capitol and stop an election being certified and kill the people responsible for certifying the election so that he could still be President, even though he lost? Like some kind of African dictator? Do you care about the United States as a democracy, or not?

H.L. Mencken said: "People deserve the government they get, and they deserve to get it good and hard."

by Anonymousreply 80February 14, 2021 3:17 AM

For those that wish the media would ignore former President Trump that will not happen.

Because as former CBS President Les Moonves said in 2016, "Trump's bad for the nation but great for CBS."

And unfortunately that sentiment still holds true today. Because Trump is a trigger for those that love him and those that hate him. And just like a car wreck, we look.

by Anonymousreply 81February 14, 2021 3:31 AM

Wait, what's happening in March, R58 and r59?

by Anonymousreply 82February 14, 2021 3:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 91February 14, 2021 10:19 AM

Hopefully if there are any more instances of violent Trumpist uprisings law enforcement will meet violence with violence and start blowing the fuckers heads off. I am still perplexed why the Capital police didn't start firing as those insurrectionists started gaining entrance to the building. Maybe if they had killed a lot on the front lines the rest would have retreated.

I am not generally a violence minded person. But in most other countries, a violent takeover of government would be met with firepower and crushed before it was allowed to go as far as we allowed the insurrection in Washington to go.

by Anonymousreply 92February 14, 2021 12:00 PM

R72, you’re an idiot.

They CANNOT (now) prevent him from running for office again. Yes, quote the 14th Amendment all you like.

The disqualification from running for future office is an additional punishment IF CONVICTED.

They acquitted him.

JFC, why is it so difficult for Americans to understand their own fucking Constitution?

by Anonymousreply 93February 14, 2021 12:13 PM

R93 are you capable to just stating the facts you wanted to state without calling people nasty names? Not everyone finds the subject of government very interesting. Just reign in your temper because you don't know everything.

by Anonymousreply 94February 14, 2021 12:23 PM

Nobody expected that there are as many as 17 Republicans in the Senate who have the moral fortitude to convict a Republican president, even for high crimes such as insurrection of our democracy.

by Anonymousreply 95February 14, 2021 12:31 PM

No, r94. When I see an idiot, especially one who has dug his heels in and insists he’s correct when he’s dead wrong, I call it out.

by Anonymousreply 104February 14, 2021 4:26 PM
Removing an official requires a “conviction” by a two-thirds Senate majority under the Constitution. Under precedent, only a simple majority is needed for disqualification. [bold]Historically, that vote only happens after a conviction.[/bold]

In other words: Conviction would mean removal from office. IN ADDITION, they can vote by simple majority to disqualify.
But [Brian] Kalt [a law professor at Michigan State University] said he thought disqualification would require conviction first. To do otherwise would be the equivalent of punishing the president for an offense he did not commit, Kalt said.

It’s like finding a murderer not guilty but then saying “we’re going to jail him anyway.”

For what?

by Anonymousreply 114February 14, 2021 6:19 PM

Yes, IN ADDITION to conviction they can ALSO vote by simple majority to DISQUALIFY.

And you're quoting one portion of what ONE law professor says he THINKS disqualification would require. You're not including the other parts like:
Another section the 14th Amendment, Section 5, empowers Congress to enforce the entire amendment through “appropriate legislation.” Some scholars have interpreted this language to mean that a majority of both chambers of Congress could enact a law applying a ban to a particular president, like Trump.
“The 14th Amendment route is very unclear as to what it would take to get it rolling,” said Kalt. “I think it would require some combination of legislation and litigation.”

So, no, it's not cut and dry that you NEED a conviction as was stated emphatically early. It's clearly NOT Clear.

by Anonymousreply 115February 14, 2021 6:23 PM

So it’s your contention you can acquit him of inciting insurrection, yet ban him from ever holding public office again due to inciting insurrection? And you think that would get past any Court? Much less SCOTUS?

I have to believe there are some senators smarter than we are, so riddle me this: why haven’t they introduced this? They only need one Repiglican to go along with it and 7 voted to convict.

by Anonymousreply 116February 14, 2021 6:28 PM

No, I didn't say it would get past the courts. I said to stand there and scream that people are morons if they think the 14th can happen WITHOUT having a conviction, is funny. Shouting that OTHER people are morons and don't understand the Constitution is amusing to me.

If the 14th were not an option the Democrats would not be actively saying that they're exploring the option even AFTER he was acquitted.
I have to believe there are some senators smarter than we are, so riddle me this: why haven’t they introduced this? They only need one Repiglican to go along with it and 7 voted to convict.

As I just stated above, they ARE looking into it. They've talked about it all week KNOWING Orange was going to be acquitted. Kaine has been pushing for it.

by Anonymousreply 117February 14, 2021 6:34 PM
They only need one Repiglican to go along with it and 7 voted to convict.

And since we're talking about those who understand the Constitution and operations of the Government and those that don't...

They don't need one Repub to go along with it. They actually don't need any of them. Simple majority would rule with Kamala's vote.

And this is exactly what the Repubs want. They'd get Orange out of their hair AND get to blame it all on the Democrats.

As Repubs know.. you can have your cake and eat it too.

Of course if they're going to go this route they should use it to take out Cruz and Hawley too... but they won't.

Dump will fade away we are talking two years at least and multiple prosecutions. Bye Cheeto

by Anonymousreply 119February 14, 2021 8:47 PM

Miss Lindsey was on Fox Network claiming they need Trump to win back the House in 2022, and he jetting down to Florida for a round of golf.

by Anonymousreply 120February 14, 2021 8:55 PM

Isn't it heartwarming how we can be such ratchet bitches over differing interpretations of an obscure section of the US Constitution?

by Anonymousreply 121February 14, 2021 10:18 PM

Dems really need to keep and expand their hold on the House and the Senate. This is all like fighting the mob, it will take years and decades to get rid of them.

by Anonymousreply 122February 14, 2021 10:43 PM

[R17] Trust me, I get it. Hate is almost not strong enough a word for the emotions that these cretins provoke. For anyone that hates injustice of any kind, these last few years have been excruciating. But don’t let the bastards destroy you.

It’s hard to let go for some of us, but our mental health dictates that maybe we should. I’m leaning towards that. But most days it’s a constant battle between total disengagement to keep me sane, and wanting to fight with everything I’ve got. Wash, rinse, repeat.

All that said, I’m haunted by Nazi Germany and the historical lessons of the rise of fascism there, especially the beginning. There are some startling similarities between then and now. I don’t want to be one of those people who stood by and let that happen. The Republican Party is completely out of control. What’s to be done?

by Anonymousreply 123February 14, 2021 11:18 PM

L graham is such a little shit - let’s hope the Georgia inquest turns up something on him. If only that conversation was taped otherwise it’s I didn’t say that..

by Anonymousreply 124February 14, 2021 11:42 PM

It’s easy to say “I didn’t say that,” but if there were 5 other people on the call who will all testify you said it, it gets a little less believable to a jury.

by Anonymousreply 125February 14, 2021 11:51 PM

I'm reading some positive comments on here, putting everything in perspective. I'm trying to feel their optimism...because this whole thing is unsettling for me. So...thank you for that. I was really disappointed when it was decided that no witnesses would be called, and thought the Democrats...as usual, caved in. Now I'm realizing that calling witnesses would prolong this trial, for weeks or months, and the result in the end would have been the same. trump would be acquitted. I'm glad it's over and frees up Senators to work with Biden to work on the most important things. I hope karma really kicks in for trump.

by Anonymousreply 126February 14, 2021 11:59 PM

r92
Hopefully if there are any more instances of violent Trumpist uprisings law enforcement will meet violence with violence and start blowing the fuckers heads off.

I f they had actually done what you recommended, I think there's adecent chance that YOU would be dead right now.

R73 Last February the news covered the Trump impeachment trial, Kobe Bryant's death, the Iowa Caucus, the Prince Andrew scandal, the Epstein scandal, the Weinstein trial, the Super Bowl, Harry and Megan ad nauseum and oh, yeah something called Coronavirus. It's February 2021 feels a little like Groundhog Day!
I hope karma really kicks in for trump.

For what it's worth, Jean Carroll (journalist who Donald allegedly raped in 1985) tweeted "Hold my beer" Saturday afternoon right after the Senate vote.

by Anonymousreply 129February 15, 2021 2:12 AM

McCarthy went down to Mar A Lago to beg Trump for his email list of donors and Trump told him to get lost.

Trump will string them along though, dangling his deplorables and his promise of support. His Twitter ban complicates things though, he can’t tweet out instant insults anymore. He might still be welcome to phone into Fox though. He’s too lazy and incapable of starting a new network or a new political party but he can still cause trouble and it will be trouble for Republicans. Voting to acquit will be a millstone around their necks.

Now the National Democratic Party has to go all in with a 50 state strategy for 2022.

by Anonymousreply 130February 15, 2021 2:29 AM

R129 Well hopefully the old gal can hold her beer!
